Only the sound of muffled drums broke the silence as thousands of civil rights demonstrators marched silently on Washington, D.C., this afternoon. Led by one man, one woman and a single child. 35,000 civil rights demonstrators marched silently on the Supreme Court and the Capitol in a demonstration modeled after the EP's 1917 silent march down New York's Fifth Avenue. Today's march focused on the Supreme Court and its recent decisions on affirmative action and minority set asides. At the Capitol grounds, the EPA Board of Directors Chairman William Gibson. Civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks attended the rally. The march also attracted the Reverend Jesse Jackson and ACP director Benjamin Hooks, D.C. Delegate Walter Fauntroy and many others. More than 50 national organizations participated in today's march, and some of the marchers started out early this morning from Baltimore. About 20 busloads of demonstrators left the state office building on Preston Street. Suzanne Collins reports. The group gathered for an early prayer before leaving. This young man heads the ACP Youth Conference, where racism seems to be taking a more subtle form. So it's very difficult for many black youth today to recognize it. Today's protest is aimed at the Supreme Court for recent decisions regarding minorities. An Alabama case allowed whites to challenge affirmative action programs. A Virginia case struck down minority set aside rules on construction projects. 20 years ago, justices like Baltimore's Thurgood Marshall made up a court that moved civil rights in a forward direction. But today, blacks say that court's going in a reverse direction. The minority set aside program in Virginia, they got overturned. Now you see the highway contractors here in Maryland filing suit to overturn Maryland's law. Knowing that the Supreme Court decisions could ultimately affect them, they boarded the busses with renewed determination. Suzanne Collins, Channel 13 Eyewitness News. We got to 85 in the city, 82 at the airport. And that was pretty much typical around the state, the upper 70s to low 80s for high temperatures right now, hazy sun and many areas still reporting pretty much the same.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136084/file/252486#t=4422.97,4509.38"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136084/file/252486/transcript/70829/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Temperatures, 82 at D.C. we're at 78 at the airport right now and pretty much the same story over on the eastern shore. Winds in the bay tomorrow will be southeast at 8 to 15. Not now, although those clouds were around today. They didn't produce any measurable precipitation at all anywhere in the immediate Maryland area. The nearest thing we can find is down in Virginia, a few very light echoes with some showers have popped up. All this activity as light and as sparse as it is, is moving to the east. So it poses no threat at all to us. We have to go further down as our national radar shows further down to the southeast to see a lot of scattered shower activity. And what this shows is the tremendous amount of humidity in the air lurking down in the Gulf Coast states. And this air is going to make its way up into our vicinity. By the middle of the week. We're going to see some real heat and humidity here. Pretty good thunderstorms out in the Midwest. Now, the satellite photographs shows actually the thin clouds and haze that we have. But when we draw the fronts and the systems look fairly complex. But these systems are very, very weak. This warm front shows the warm air pushing in our direction, which I just said will be here by mid-week to make it rather humid. As we go to the forecast map, notice that the system itself really pretty much falls apart. So we're not looking for a real outbreak of shower activity or real heavy precipitation. But as the hot, humid air pushes in, we do think Tuesday as our best chance right now to see some shower activity breaking out. More than 75 people turning out of the Hopkins cattle letters and the Grant to Wish Foundation sponsored a picnic at the zoo. Today's guests were patients and their families. And there's one of the zoo bears. It's always a lot of fun. And Chris Ely has some fun, too, from the wonderful world of baseball. You never know what your theme song from a few years back went something like, Every game there's a different star. That's the magic of Orioles baseball. Orioles catcher Bob Melvin smashed a three run homer in the second to kill a four run outbreak, and the rampaging Orioles won their fourth straight 8 to 5 over the fading Yankees. Mike Devereaux gets it going for the Orioles in the second two men on. Devereaux lays a perfect bunt down the third base line. Hensley Mullens throws the ball away. It scored a hit and an error allows Keith Moreland to score. That made it one nothing. Birds. Then Bob Melvin strode into a great cavalry pitch and drove it to the seats in right center for his very first home run in more than a year. That made it four to nothing. The Orioles were sailing along. Orioles got some more tremendous defense. We're used to that. Cal Ripken going to come up with a backhand of a one hopper. He turns fires to first to get Mullens by a mile. Conversely, the outfield defense by Luis Polonia on the left was laughable. In the top of the seventh, Tim Hubert ropes it to Polonia. He misjudges it for an error. How would you like to be manager Bucky Dent having to watch all this? Top of the seventh. It's Melvin again. And Polonia won't catch up with this one either. Bill Spiers great play on Mookie Wilson but the throw gets away Ernie wets scores Tony Fernandez trips over the plate. Then the Brewers frustration takes over after losing five straight games and on their way they're losing the sixth. Charlie O'Brien and Fernandez are going to get into it After a lot of pushing and shoving, this whole thing was settled. Both benches emptied, but nothing more came of it. Kelly Gruber followed with a drive to center field that doesn't Astroturf hop right over the head of Robin Yount. That tied the game at three. Then our old friend George Bell gets into the act. He's going to hit one in the deep center. Time now for Sunday night weather. Doctor Bob Soca is here and stickiness is the humidity means very definitely actually by the middle of the week we're looking for temperatures will touch 90 degrees and maybe a little warmer than that in the city. So, you know, a week from tomorrow is Labor Day.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136084/file/252486#t=5950.57,6063.11"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136084/file/252486/transcript/70829/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"That's right. Right. So a lot of folks headed down for this last full week at the ocean. And it's going to be an okay week at the ocean. I think we'll see some afternoon thunderstorms really, you know, the sort of typical ocean type weather you expect for late in August. That's back to school soon, too. Yeah, I'll tell you, the kids remember that a week from what, Tuesday kids will be back in school. So anyway, around the state tonight, we saw a good bit of cloud cover through the course of today, although a lot of the cloud cover gave way in the afternoon, the haze lingered so it appeared somewhat overcast. We're still seeing a good bit of haze around right now. Some light fog is beginning to settle as humidity creep up toward 100% in some of the low lying areas. So if you're headed out for some late night driving, you might keep an eye out for some of that. We got to a high of 82 degrees today, both in the city and at the airport. A little warmer at 84 over on the eastern shore. Also 84 out in Hagerstown right now, about ten degrees cooler and that's 74 at the airport. Salisbury, you're at 70 degrees, but a fairly mild temps for these temperatures won't drop a whole lot more during the evening or during the nighttime hours because the humidities are so high. Winds in the bay Tomorrow, I'll be southeast at 8 to 15 knots. Now, out of the clouds we saw today, we didn't see any precipitation at all. In fact, the threat really wasn't there. But during the evening hours, some showers now have materialized from central New Jersey on up into New England in the fairly scattered variety.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136084/file/252486#t=6063.38,6145.49"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136084/file/252486/transcript/70829/annotation/59","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And as we saw actually from Friday through Saturday, also some shower activity from the northern part of North Carolina down to the south and west. As we open up the national radar, though, we do see that following that line down into the south eastern part of the country. There's a fair now number of thunderstorms scattered about and actually some very warm, humid air has been permeating the southeast. A real heatwave conditions, record temperatures at New Orleans, 99 degrees. Pensacola, Florida, also set a record in the 90. So some very warm air. And this will be filtering in our direction, bringing us those temperatures near 94, the Baltimore area by midweek, a lot of thunderstorm activity. Many of these in the severe variety with the usual accompanying weather, high winds, hail and really heavy downpours out in the Midwest. But this stuff really isn't moving in our direction all that rapidly. Check out the satellite photograph. And there's this system out in the Midwest. Notice the light cloud cover and haze that's showing up with the high pressure system where we are. And although the frontal systems look fairly complex, these are very, very weak systems and show just the advance of that warm, humid air that we were talking about that will be moving into our area by midweek. But as we go to the forecast map, notice that that system pretty much disintegrates and we'll be seeing this hot, humid air drifting in our direction. The real break won't come until late in the week when possibly and worse is really looking far down into the five day forecast. Quite possibly. This frontal system will bring us a break and get us back down into the low 80s for high temperatures late in the week.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136084/file/252486#t=6146.33,6240.62"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136084/file/252486/transcript/70829/annotation/60","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But until that time, this is what the forecast looks like. Then tonight, partly cloudy conditions with some haze and some light fog developing. Watch for that in the early morning hours. Overnight low at 67 degrees. And tomorrow, be a variably cloudy day. Not all that much different than today was with some haze and humidity and possibly an afternoon shower could be seen in various locations variably cloudy tomorrow. Notice the increasing temperatures toward midweek and our best chance for shower activity looks like right now, Tuesday morning to mid-day, then clearing out a little bit. But that humidity really moving in Wednesday and Thursday. Also a chance of showers possibly late in the day as that cooler, drier air begins to move in and that'll drop temperatures down just a little bit as you get to go outside tomorrow, look for some early morning mist and fog. It's going to be a hazy morning with a little bit of fog and some low lying areas, but a very mild warm morning at 70 degrees. So that's how the week looks from here.
