Tim Rivers calls his act the world's only high diving mules. But an animal rights group calls the show Cruel People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or Peta, staged a big protest at the Cecil County fair today, where Rivers animals are currently performing. Members dove into the tank, chained themselves to the diving platform. In all, six people were arrested for trespassing. River says the mules are just doing what comes naturally, jumping off an 18 foot high platform into water. But Peta members say it's not natural at all. And we do have a veterinarian statement, several statements saying that the animals look shaken when they come from the water, that their ears are back, that they hesitate. All of these symptoms that they would have if they're not enjoying what they're doing or they're they're against what they're being forced to do. We have had vets to examine the animals and the act, and they say they cannot find any cruelty of whatsoever, hurts nothing because the animal would not do the act on his own because he goes on his own. Today, Peta asked the county to ban the mule diving at the Fair Board, consulted two veterinarians who decided the act is not cruel, so they let the show go on. Rivers says his mules perform because they like the water. He says none has been injured since his show started touring the country over 20 years ago.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136106/file/252531#t=108.27,226.7"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136106/file/252531/transcript/70847/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"A Baltimore County family hoping for the best has heard the worst from overseas. 67 year old Delores Betts of Phenix disappeared two and a half weeks ago while on a tour of Europe. Denver is a classic example of this constipation, partly because it's a major hub, the place where Continental makes most of its connections. But most agree that airports are part of the problem. They're outdated. No major new airport has opened in this country since 1974. This will be the next one. 18 miles east of Denver, caterpillars are carving up 54mi² of former farmland for Denver's new airport. They're calling this the largest public works project in American history. And you can believe that it's going to take at least 1,000,000,007 to get it built. And it took 12 years to get it started. They teach you how to stay in school, you know, to make it make your hair is more perfect and give you hope. Gives you hope. Yeah. But the only disappointing part of the day is that the kids were expected to hear debate on the Civil Rights Act of 1990, but that was postponed until tomorrow. But they did get a chance to hear debate on another issue. Yeah. Good. Hope it's motivation. Thank you, Debbie. You're welcome. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teenagers between the ages of 15 and 24. But as Andrea Koppel reports today, Maryland became the first state in the nation to offer its young people a direct and decentralized toll free hotline number to call for help. These crisis hotline counselors here at the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center take teenagers very seriously when they say they want to commit suicide. 22 year old Meg is one of those counselors and says if it hadn't been for the fact that someone took her younger brother at his word, he probably wouldn't be here today.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136106/file/252531#t=2812.95,2910.33"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136106/file/252531/transcript/70847/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He didn't think that his life would ever get better and that he wanted to die. And he just you know, he thought at 19 his life was over. Fortunately for Meg and her brother Greg, someone was there to listen to his concerns. And beginning today in Maryland, after years of hard work, the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center is offering any teen anywhere in Maryland who needs one. A similar outlet available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All they have to do is call 1-800-442-0009. When the caller calls the 800 number, he will automatically be relayed electronically to the center that's closest to him. And we have a network of six centers around the state, four of which are directly on that hotline. And with 5000 teenagers nationwide committing suicide every year, 100 of them in our own state. Henry Nester believes the numbers alone justify the need for this hotline. And as Meg will tell you, oftentimes all a troubled teen wants or needs is another person to talk to. There are people out there. A lot of times they just cannot see it. A lot of times they have family and they have friends that care and they just at that time, they just think that they are so alone. Counselors here at the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center say you can never know just how many lives you'll save with this hotline. But they're convinced that most people who are suicidal really don't want to die. With this in mind, they're determined to give anyone who wants help the opportunity to get it. Before her surgery and told me she could barely see to read to her daughter or do cross stitching, which she loves to do. I was cross-stitching, but I was using a magnifying glass and I, you know, just do a little bit, take a break, do a little bit and take a break. Not any more today and sees clearly out of one eye. Thanks to surgery that replaced the scar disease cornea with a clear one. The last time we saw Am the patch was coming off for the first time. Even though the eye was swollen, she already could see a difference. You see my fingers on here? Yes. Can you see anything? Yes, it's very clear. But clearly for me, a more defined, very definite, clearer than the other eye now. Yeah. That's amazing. I had less swelling. I was allergic to one of the medications. One of the drugs. So it swelled up again. And then after that, it's been fine today and is doing great. Her other eye is a reminder of what both eyes were once like when I bought the right eye. It's foggy. It's. In Washington, the House Armed Services Committee yesterday voted to kill the B-2 stealth bomber, a move symbolic of the biggest American defense cuts in decades. The Bush administration wanted 75 of these planes built. You don't have to be a math genius to realize what a staggering cost this is. But with the end of the Cold War, how do you justify this kind of military spending, particularly in a country with massive budget deficits and a savings and loan industry that's been brought to its knees? What's heartbreaking, though, is where this B-2 money might have gone. Imagine the cost of one plane. Imagine $865 million being spent to rebuild a city, to strengthen schools, to help fight drug abuse and Aids. Washington is boasting these days that massive American military spending is what drove the Russians to their knees. The Soviets were so busy keeping up with us militarily that everything else went to hell. The problem is this. That's what happened in America, too. Ironically, late this afternoon, the mayor announced a $300,000 matching grant for homelessness. He wasn't too happy about the planned march. Like most citizens, don't, you know, like to have pickets in front of the front of my house? The mayor said he felt the protest in front of his home was inappropriate. What are you going to do? Stay here and scrub parts for beaver. I may have old beavers cut the parts for me. I'm buying this place. Turn it into an in-house. There's wildcat money coming in here. I got to stick my piece while I still got a fair enough name. Opening a restaurant takes money and a rich cattle baron. And the governor offered Garret goodies to kill his old friend. $1,000, Mr. Garrett. And all the resources you need to carry out the extermination of one William H. Barney. So now Pat Garrett goes after Billy the Kid, and everybody's riding some more. Now, teenage boys and Western fans might flock to young guns, too, for a hit, a cowboy, charisma, some bloody bodies and spent shells. And they'll get all that. But the pacing is fairly frantic and the plot pays the price. I found it boring in some places, kind of entertaining in others, but at no point was I really along for the ride with these young guns. It gets a five. Wow. Kelly. Well, yes, the weather does. I remember.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136106/file/252531#t=5964.97,6076.36"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136106/file/252531/transcript/70847/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Remember Charles Starrett, the Durango kid? Here's Baltimore. Look at the clouds, a few high clouds to our south, but they continue to move from west to east, down or south. Generally, a clear sky forecast map to more high pressure dry weather for at least will probably into Saturday. By that time, this high will be off the coast, allowing more humid air to start moving back into the region. So over the weekend, it's going to get sticky and it could be a risk of early afternoon shower by Sunday, a better chance on Monday. And by next week, I think we'll be in a totally different weather pattern. Frontal boundary right through the region will probably have about 3 or 4 days of shower activity next week. So a dry week this week could be wet next week, dry in the northwest. More temperatures up there going to be kind of warm.
