We don't really know what Brad truly has. We know that he has a... many of the symptoms of cerebral palsy, and needs the work and the therapy that Delray and the other cerebral palsy agencies provide. I'm a mother, I'm a student at graduate school, and I'm a waitress at Howard Johnson's. I've been teaching for six years, I enjoy it. I know I can go elsewhere and make more money, but I love my kids. I'm going to graduate school for the mildly retarded children, teaching the mildly handicapped children at Coppin State College. And I'm halfway, so I shall receive my master's degree. in about a year and a half. Robbie is two and a half years old now. I was five months pregnant when I had Robbie and he was one pound, 11 ounces and he went down to one pound, seven ounces and they told me that I was young and that I would have to try again because Robbie wouldn't make it. But just thanks to the Lord and he is here. When he was about one month old, This was his first outfit that he wore. This is just to let you know how small he was. and his head was about the same size as this. Robbie's pediatrician was really concerned with Robbie not being able to turn over from his back to his stomach because he could turn over from his stomach to his back. So she made an appointment for him to go to the Kennedy Institute. And the doctor said that he had cerebral palsy. I was not surprised because I knew something was wrong with him. And sometimes I'll look at him and I'll say, why him? What did he ever do? You know, why him? It's a lot of effort to see your child struggle, to try to feed himself, to try to brush his teeth, to try to put a record on a record player, to try to. Oh, well, the worst thing of all, I think, is to try to see him struggle to say something. He is so bright mentally, and he has a lot to say. It must be a terrible, terrible thing to have things inside of you that you want to say, and you can't speak them clearly. It's got to be the biggest frustration in the world to have things that you really want to come out of you to express. and it can't come out. Just because he can't speak correctly, like we do, doesn't mean he's mentally retarded, doesn't mean he doesn't understand, doesn't mean he doesn't have a lot to say because he's got things to say. Thank God for the speech board, it can come out that way. That was really some night when you got those boxing gloves, wasn't it, Bob? You remember that night? You're all excited. And what did he say to you again when he gave you the glove? Here you go, champ. What date was it? February the 4th, 1978. I think Bobby picks out his friends and people to admire the qualities that he has himself. He's just a very kind, feeling person. He feels for people. He's considerate of them. And I think because he is that way, he sort of tends to go to other people who gives off that same feeling. kindness, consideration, thoughtfulness, compassion. He's a very good person.
