It was my first time working fully and exclusively as a producer. I produce things I've done before, but I've usually appeared in them. This was my first opportunity to produce where I didn't have to worry about my presence in front of the camera. It was also an opportunity for me to revisit my own youth, which was spent on the streets of New York City, in the South Bronx, in Harlem. And in trying to show the life of the young people in that community in 1984, I drew up on so many of my own memories as a kid. And I was aware of how we had not come very much further than when I was a boy. By that, I mean, I don't mean to suggest that blacks have not progressed a great deal, but the economic conditions are such that are not really broken. to mainstream America in the way that many of us had hoped would be achieved by this time. But the film I had dealt with, Black and Hispanic youth. the music and the hopes and the aspirations of that community. And I think by and large, many of the performances, because most of the artists in the film were indigenous to that community. Many of the kids have not ever performed before, at least not in film. And I think that they did a glorious job. I think the whole idea of break dancing is as rich a piece of American folk art is. square dancing is, as rich as Lindy dancing. Boogeyan is. I think rap singing is as rich a piece of American folk art as the talking blues or singing the blues or chain gang songs or anything that Lead Belly and Big Bill Brunsey and all the great black artists have given us. I think that the whole issue of graffiti art, first of all, there's a great protest in it because it makes a world that does not want to focus on the disenfranchised, forced to look because those paintings are to be found in the most unusual places, if not everywhere. But also it gives a chance for expression to a group of people who find a lot to do. to be frustrated about. I mean, some of the great graffiti artists of America are making as much as $25,000, $30,000 a canvas. That would be quite successful. And they started off by defacing subways and the sides of buildings. So one cannot just look at this culture in any superficial way and just dismiss it as irrelevant or as having no purpose. I think that there's a lot about it that has to be reckoned with, and I think that's quite noble. And I think the 22 million blacks who are cruelly governed by the four and a half million whites who took over the country from its indigenous people. will not yield on any level that can be considered humane. I think it'll be as brutal as Nazi Germany was to the Jews and the people whom we considered, or whom they considered unacceptable. And I think white South Africans will be as ruthless and as lethal to the blacks of South Africa. But the world has been so deaf to the pleas of South African people that they have been left no choice but to aggressively seize. the thrust for their own destiny. And I think that will shape up to be more and more violent. I think the South Africans are going to become more and more ruthless in oppressing it. I think they'll begin to do things that are as divisive as setting up the groups that denounced Ted Kennedy when he was in South Africa, to disrupt peaceful meetings and to give the people an opportunity to articulate their position. I think that it was all highly calculated.
