With the arrival this afternoon of another planeload of former hostages from the Persian Gulf. One of the things that the airport at BWI have been running a little behind schedule because of the heavy storms in our area. But the new arrivals are here. And Lowell Deyo is standing by live at BWI to bring it home to us LOL. Hi, Richard. One interesting to note, there were no dampened spirits among the hostages, but there were a lot of soggy reporters. I know because I am one of them. And it would have taken a lot to dampen the spirit of these people, especially for the 160 former hostages, because this was their first taste of freedom in more than two months. And after about an hour delay. As you can see, the hostages were released from the plane. They did get to go into the hangar where they took in food, medical care, counseling and even emergency loans if they needed some. Now, Richard, right now we are standing inside the airport.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115329/file/219144#t=109.51,231.6"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115329/file/219144/transcript/62330/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We are standing in the lobby. And this is traditionally the space where the hostages will walk in and tell us about what they had to go through, how they coped, what they did. But since the plane landed so late because of the rain, it's taking them a little longer to get processed and to come to us. So while we're waiting, let me go ahead and give you a breakdown of who these people are. As I said before, there are 160 hostages. Only 54 of them are United States citizens, 106 coming from outside the U.S. But having some sort of tie here. There are 50 women and none of none of them supposedly had any illnesses or sicknesses. The reason I mentioned this is because there are 44 men also in this latest load. That's an interesting thing to note, because usually the men were only allowed to come if they had some sort of illness. So here we go back to the press conference where we're hoping to share the story of some former hostages. But that won't happen for a while. We will let you know when they arrive so we can share their stories with you. Richard, I would like to know this is a third plane load to land at the airport since last Monday night. Why are they picking Baltimore? We're very happy. They are. But why BWI? Well, BWI people will try to hold back their pride, but they'll go in and tell you that things have been going so smoothly and the other two plane lives here. But this is becoming a favorite of the State Department. They haven't been told to expect any this week, but they are told to stay on alert for some more. Well, President Bush took his case straight to the Iraqi people today in an eight minute speech that apparently ran unedited on state run Iraqi television. In a translated message with captions in Arabic, President Bush warned that Iraq stands isolated and alone in the wake of its August 2nd invasion of Kuwait finds itself on the brink of war. Once again, the same Iraqi leadership has miscalculated. Once again, the Iraqi people faced tragedy. The speech ignited a wave of anti-American protest in the streets of Baghdad after an Iraqi TV announcer delivered a stinging 25 minute response to the Bush message, warning, A thundering rage against the U.S. is building in the Arab world in the Soviet Union. Angry protesters, tens of thousands of them, took to the streets demanding the resignation of President Mikhail Gorbachev and his prime minister today, carrying red, white and blue banners declaring the economy is a disaster. Demonstrators marched on the Kremlin with their demands. Marchers blamed the leadership for devalued money, food shortages and empty store shelves. Well, there is only one winning $8 million ticket. Last week, the Fighting Irish were handed the top spot, one Miami loss. But you got to be good to stay there. And the Irish were very good in their season opener late last night against Michigan. Gary Mohler, in his first game as head coach for the Wolverines, saw Elvis garb back, a sophomore quarterback pass to the sidelines, complete to Desmond Howard, who manages to tip toe down the line 25 yards, put Michigan in the lead by ten 2414 in the third quarter. But then behind it came the Irish game. Early fourth quarter, Rodney called the Bulls over from the Won and Notre Dame was back to within three at 2421 and finally given one last chance with time running down, Mark Meyer in his first start took Notre Dame 76 yards, calling it by this roll out pass to Adrian Gerald for the winning touchdown.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115329/file/219144#t=1317.03,1422.56"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115329/file/219144/transcript/62330/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Notre Dame comes from behind to win their first of the year 28 to 24. I don't care where they are in the standings. It's worse. Can you believe it? For the third straight game, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Orioles in the bottom of the ninth inning, and in two out of the three, the man on the mound was Greg Olsen. Other than the fact that the Orioles lost, this was one fine baseball game. George Bell hasn't done much for the Jays in a month or more. And Clint Eastwood plays a film director on safari in White Hunter, Black Hart. It's all coming up next on Siskel and Ebert. Am I too late for the family thing? Yeah. Okay. Meryl Streep is a troubled actress, and Shirley MacLaine is our movie star mother in Postcards from the Edge. That's one of the new movies we're going to be reviewing this week on Siskel and Ebert. And we'll also have an on the spot report from this year's Telluride Film Festival, which is one of the most important held in this country every year. I'm Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times. And I'm Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune. Actress Carrie Fisher, best known as Princess Leia in Star Wars and real life, had a serious drug problem in her autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge. She wrote in a wickedly funny manner about her experience in a drug rehab clinic. The movie version of her story, however, is more about her stormy relationship with her show biz mother, played by Shirley MacLaine. The film picks up with Carrie Fisher's character, played by Meryl Streep after she had just gotten out of the clinic and then started to work on a new movie. The filmmaking doesn't go easy right from the start, as the producer, played by Rob Reiner, wants her to take a drug test. It's a damn insurance company. They just want coffee without a screen. I say, I understand we're behind you 100%.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115329/file/219144#t=3543.57,3687.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115329/file/219144/transcript/62330/annotation/35","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's just it's a formality. The business. While working on this movie. Streep runs into another filmmaker, Dennis Quaid, the old boyfriend she spent the night with the night of her drug overdose. Nothing happened. We just talked. And then you took my darida and you fell fastest. I am I so completely unappealing. And quite the contrary is just that you were all the worse or better for substances. And I have rules about that. The centerpiece of the film is the mother daughter story and the picture's best scene. The two women go at each other and at their weaknesses. Streep complaining about MacLaine's showboating style, her drinking habit, and her constant belief that Mother knows best. I remember my 17th birthday party when you lifted your skirt up in front of all the kids. Oh, my God. My world. You only remember the bad stuff, don't you? What about the big band that I got to play at that party? Do you remember that? No. You only remember that my skirt accidentally twirled up and you weren't wearing any underwear. Well, despite the joking at the end, the emotion in that scene seems quite real. And this movie is at its best when the dialog is as sharp tongue as it is in that scene. I think MacLaine's performance is actually the strongest in the film and the moviemaking scenes within this picture. Mike Nichols strips away a lot of the moviemaking phoniness and how movies are made to show us a bunch of basically frightened, insecure people within his profession. What I didn't like at all about the film, however, was its conventional, happy ending in which every aspect of Meryl Streep's character, her whole life, is successfully pulled together, work her mother and a possible boyfriend.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115329/file/219144#t=3687.78,3790.62"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115329/file/219144/transcript/62330/annotation/36","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The addict's life of recovery is hardly that simple. And I think this ending hurts, but it doesn't cripple an otherwise enjoyable movie. I've thought for a long time that there could be a very good movie made about Alcoholics Anonymous, especially in terms of this whole Betty Ford California sort of thing that's developed. What about the other people in the movie business? How do they recover? What do they say to each other at all? Takes place offscreen because they'd rather have these clever one liners and these soap opera situations, such as the one where Shirley MacLaine crashes into a tree and goes to the hospital. She's very good. Are you not criticize her performance, just the whole thing or what? Well, you're saying that they didn't make the movie you wanted to make. What about, you know, the old line? What about the movie they made? I like the movie they made up to a certain degree. Up to about here, a little thumb up. Except at the same time, I agree with you that the ending is so tidy. Also, we're playing in very much in the real world with real stars playing stars that we know. I mean, Debbie Reynolds was Carrie Fisher's mother there. So this is a picture anchored in reality. And to keep it out at the end, to tie it all up in a bow, I think it just leaves a very bad taste in an otherwise strong picture. I think you're right. Coming up, Sean Penn and Gary Oldman are gangsters from New York's Hell's Kitchen and State of Grace. That's next. And later, we'll review Clint Eastwood's new film, White Hunter. Blackheart.
