Richard Nixon's political trip from California to the heights of world power and scandal ends on a rainy afternoon in Yorba Linda. The body of the 37th president of the United States returns to his library and boyhood home. Good evening, everybody. The body of the former president arrived there about an hour ago after leaving a New York air base this morning. Ron Matt says tomorrow tradition will be followed when the federal government closes down to mark a presidential funeral. Richard Nixon's final journey began this morning, and the body of the 81 year old former president arrived at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in California from New York. Mr. Nixon is receiving a full presidential sendoff, but Washington will not be part of the presidential funeral. But for somebody who spent so much time in Washington, usually there would be a funeral in Washington, but it need not be. And the family chose not to. Presidential funerals are steeped in tradition. The last one was January 22nd, 1973, when the nation said goodbye to Lyndon Johnson. Then, as now, the federal government was closed down to honor the dead president. In death, as in his controversial life, Richard Nixon continues to stir the emotions. He made a big mistake. He paid for it. And hopefully everyone's learned a lesson from it because they said he did a lot of good things and I've read a lot of things about him. It's also an historic day in South Africa. Blacks are pouring into polling places throughout the country for the first all race elections. More than 100,000 police are on duty to provide security. There were some scattered reports of problems, including bomb threats and delayed ballot papers. But there's been nothing like the bombings that plagued South Africa in the final days before the election. Nelson Mandela is expected to become the country's first black president. But many South Africans will also stress that this is only the first step along a very difficult road ahead. It's overwhelming and it's very difficult to explain. But it is the kind of feeling that one that has been felt before in a long time. And one is very excited, but basically an understatement. It's more than that. What are you worried about that it's still not going to be plain sailing. It's going to take a while for it to sort itself out. You know, it's not going to be an overnight thing. Some are young. Others older, some black, some white. Whatever visible differences exist, the common ground is that they are all South Africans. Today, as blacks vote for the first time ever. Many believe they are casting a ballot for freedom while officially burying apartheid rule. One of the main reasons in coming to the United States was because of the problem of disenfranchisement of most of the population. So this is very significant to me. I never thought I'd see this day. I always thought it would be a bloody war or something that would precipitate this. In fact, it has. Two days of bombing has left more than 20 people dead. It's expected white extremists are responsible resisters who have vowed war rather than live under black rule. And I think it's going to it's going to take time for them to to really have that bond and trust each other. How widespread is South African voting here at home in the U.S.? The voting is very widespread across the United States, much more widespread than we imagined. There is voting in Philadelphia, in Chicago today, in Los Angeles, 20,000 South Africans were expected to vote. So I think our concern or our concept of how many South Africans are in the U.S. may be a little underestimated, but certainly a large contingent there. It's also going to get moving on the muggy side. But however, I don't think it's going to pass our records for the day. Take a look at this. What's the most common disease diagnosed in children? Well, Healthwatch reporter Sandra Pinkney has the answer. You've probably I don't know if you've had the ear infection, but I've been we've been very lucky. Everett only had one. So we're very lucky. You know, they can sometimes be so serious that surgery is needed and recurring, recurring. And we're going to talk about the surgery part right now. New research suggests that in some cases, surgery is not necessary. Most kids will have an ear infection or two by the time they're toddlers. While antibiotics are the first line of defense, many doctors turn to tubes for help. The tiny tubes are inserted in the ear during surgery and can drain fluid, which may build up. But research in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows more than one quarter of the surgeries one quarter are not needed since the surgery can lead to some hearing loss If the eardrum is scarred. Patients have a big. I mean, parents rather, have a big decision to make in a very serious decision that could mean the difference between hearing loss and hearing for their child's future.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136697/file/253404#t=764.67,855.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136697/file/253404/transcript/71546/annotation/9","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah. So if antibiotics don't work, then consult with your doctor and talk about other options. Okay. All right. Thanks, Sanjay. We'll see a little bit later. Let's take a look now at some of the other stories making headlines this Tuesday, April the 26th. Autopsy results are not yet available on the body of 27 year old Robin Deborah Cherry. She was found behind a Reisterstown home yesterday. Police are calling her death suspicious and a juvenile who was in custody at and also at University of Maryland Hospital for treatment managed to escape this morning on shackles and crutches. Wonderful day to be down at Camden Yards. Only 47,000 shows. All you have to do is hang out the open for business sign down there these days. Great day. Anderson, the big guns of the Orioles arsenal had two home runs, two doubles, 12 total bases for the day for Brady Anderson. Some folks who were playing hooky used special methods to disguise their identity because one thing they didn't want to do is get caught playing hooky. Well, the School of Medicine is a not for profit 5A1C3 organization. And we're we're dedicated to the research, investigation, study and application of the human potential. One of those areas is, of course, dreaming. It's a universal phenomenon. And we've been researching it for almost 40 years now. So what we do is the last weekend in April, every year we sponsor the National Dream Hotline where people can call in and we'll share the benefits of those, the research that we've been doing. There are some recurring themes like death or flying dreams. I mean, without getting too specific, can you tell us what some of those recurring dreams mean? Right. There are many themes and commonalities that we tend to remember in terms of dreams that we recall. We dream in cycles every night, but in terms of like reoccurring dreams, it's very similar to needing to repeat yourself in conversations where someone says, I didn't hear you. That's a kind of indication of what a recurring dream is. It's when you really haven't caught the dream before. We dream so many times during a night, but many times we wake up very rudely by an alarm clock. We don't even remember that we've had any kind of inner awareness or dream experience. So dreams get a little bit more repetitive, perhaps a little bit louder or a little bit more frightening, which we call a nightmare in order to get our attention. To capture our attention. What about flying? Flying in a dream is very common, in fact. And in the research that I've been doing personally for 20 years, I used to think that children were the ones that remembered flying dreams.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136697/file/253404#t=1135.89,1226.37"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136697/file/253404/transcript/71546/annotation/13","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But actually, probably at least a third of the population remembers flying dreams at any age. That's the first good news. And as Dennis Edwards explains, volunteers are really getting the job done. She's been telling me for about a year. Number one, I like a personality. I like the way she talks and I like the way she get on me. When Emily Geary comes to visit Mary McNeil twice a month, she's looking for something very important. I check with them to see how they are feeling. See any change in their medication that the doctor has to them? Because I'm just in between. I don't change a medication. Just make sure that they are taking their medication and they do. And they follow up with the insulin. The city tells homeowners and landlords they, too, can feel safe by applying for a health department inspection, which takes about five hours. The repair work and what's called the lead abatement program takes a week to ten days, during which time the city relocates the tenants. Base capes or wonderful landscapes that we all are familiar with, but they have a little extra. They are very, very good at preventing pollution and minimizing problems that we can create by the way that we manage them. The philosophy behind base gates is, is what? Pollution prevention. Let's find a way to have our beautiful landscapes that we're used to. And by making a few changes in the way we do things. We can also prevent pollution and reduce inputs into our streams or creeks and ultimately the better. Okay. And the main reason for this, that is primarily for the Chesapeake Bay region we're talking about and the plants that we plant. Think about the plants that you plant. That's right. The Bay Scapes program is intended to work for everyone in the Chesapeake Bay drainage area, from Pennsylvania down to Virginia and all the way to West Virginia. What we've done is try to find a way to engage people in making decisions that favor the Chesapeake Bay. And plant selection is one of the many pieces we look at in the base Tips program. The first all race elections in South Africa and history is drawing mixed reaction tonight. Many are relieved that the election has finally come about. But there is also real fear the violence is not over. Kai Jackson joins us now live from the site of a vigil in Baltimore where people are praying for peace in South Africa. Kai, how they're praying for their peace because they realize that the possibility for violence certainly exists. We're out here on Charles Street with members of the American Friends Service Committee, a nonprofit organization that's dedicated much of its work to the humanitarian issues in South Africa. And we should mention that 40, 40 million people live in South Africa and half of those people are eligible to vote. They're doing that today in the United States and other countries as well. There's certainly optimism for the one person, one vote decision today, but there's also a great concern that there will be much more, much more not destruction, but there's going to be a lot more hardship before there is prosperity. It's overwhelming and it's very difficult to explain, but it is the kind of feeling that one has been felt before in a long time. And the he's very excited, but that's actually an understatement. It's more than that. What are you worried about that it's still not going to be plain sailing? It's going to take a while for it to sort itself out. You know, it's not going to be an overnight thing. I think it's going to it's going to take time for them to to really have that bond and trust each other. In Baltimore, Dr. Michael Ngcobo, a South African minister, heads to a church to pray before voting. She was born one year after apartheid was established. She says land and economics are still unresolved issues. Our blood is falling down for them to take our land. And I can remember vividly that my grandparents, where they lived, the police just came and say move. I think the issue is not whether the majority is black or whether the majority is anything else. The issue is whether it's a democratic government or whether the philosophies of the politicians or those who believe in human rights. I think the ANC has repeatedly made that case to our people that this is not going to happen overnight. I hope that yes, they can. I think that if everyone work together, there is such an incredible force in South Africa, and if everyone did work together, they could do so much.
