But the Caribbean community has its festivals on a continuing basis. Just about once a month, they get to get together with steel bands, calypso dancing and just big fun. The most recent Caribbean celebration was held at the Teamsters Hall on Erdman Avenue. It was the occasion of the 25th anniversary in show business of the King of Calypso music, The Mighty Sparrow. And we were there. One of the promoters of tonight's Cabaret is also a Caribbean disco deejay known as Breeze, whose real name is Cecil Joseph, and he's originally from Trinidad. We're going to find out a few things about Baltimore's Caribbean community from Breeze. But first, we got to find out how he got his name. When I was going to school, I started playing cricket in the game called Cricket. Cricket is like baseball. I like every time I get going into Wicked. Right. Australia like a superstar in the game, right? And they would call me Young Breeze, you know. That's the way they could pick me from the other guys, as young as young be. So the name just eventually stay on and stay on and just everybody just call me Breeze or a whole lot of people don't even know my right name. Breeze lives in the Simonian section of Baltimore, and he owns a record store on Greenmount Avenue in Waverly. Do you want to give that one? Yes, this one. I buy records every week. I go to New York, I go to DC, and I've got to bring records for people here and there. I think I could do my people a good help by getting a store together.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114025/file/216763#t=75.09,177.95"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114025/file/216763/transcript/61531/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And I say, Well, look, I want people to feel like they can help me and go help my people, right? And I get down to it and there was a stop and no problem. It's moving. Beautiful. Baltimore is really different. But you need to know comedians. You've got Vincent Jones, Canadians antigens. We've got a lot of them here. But Trinidadians and Jamaicans is the two largest population. We got you. It is traditional at West Indian cabarets to have two bands and the other band. Tonight is our own world famous Baltimore of Trinidad and Tobago Steel Orchestra. Now they know tonight is special because they are on the same bill with The Mighty Sparrow. And so they begin the evening with a band. No, no, no, no, no. Everybody was talking about the United States. So like, I was interested in seeing what the United States looked like. I came out here, I had a big boat here. I was in New York. Really? And he was showing me like money was so easy to get. I mean, no, not that we didn't have any money back home, but it's like the way things were cheap by the time year and the cost of living was really all right, you know. So I got a job and everything started moving, right? So I said, Hey. That's it. So I never went back until, you know, after I got married here. And I've got kids. All of American with American. And that's it. Just before Sparrow comes on stage. There is one final act to get everybody ready. The limbo Dancers. No, please. That's me. Way too, Jack. He told me it's some salamander. We just spotted on Sparrow's real name as swinger Francisco. Or it may be Francisco Slinger, depending on whom you believe.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114025/file/216763#t=179.0,393.95"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114025/file/216763/transcript/61531/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He's from Trinidad, where he won his first title, Calypso Monarch in 1956. Now I have to enter the competition in the different islands, wherever you go. The main competition is in Trinidad. There is a competition in Antigua. There's also one in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands. Those are the three biggest ones. But there's also competitions in New York, competition in Saint Vincent and St Lucia. I don't want to have John Blake as host of a West Indian radio program heard every Sunday on U. R FM in Washington. Calypso has always been that has been the mouthpiece of the Caribbean. It represents the people of the Caribbean. Sparrow is one who has done it for 25 years, this being its 25th anniversary very successfully. Many others have been doing it, but they have not lasted as long as he has. And you know, you'd have to ask him himself how he was able to do this. It's a natural thing. The audience makes the show. As long as you have a lovely, alive audience. You can go on and on forever. I think West Indian people are very much, you know, into their culture. They like to be reminded. They like to always get that whenever they get the opportunity, they like to hold on to that last vestige of their culture. Some of them have probably been away for 20 years or more yet still, they keep coming out to these events and I think it probably is true for other cultural events in Baltimore. Hold on my head completely about going back on, Billy. The reason why. I've got my kids here. The only American wife here. She is American and has that. I mean, and right now I'm in I'm in the process of a citizenship.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114025/file/216763#t=394.8,504.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114025/file/216763/transcript/61531/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So I don't think as far as going back home is really about the question.
