WJ TV Baltimore This is Eyewitness News with Don Scott. Weather with Marty back. A drug bust goes bad in West Baltimore. One police officer is dead. Another is wounded. The two officers were responding to a report of a sale of narcotics in the 1500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. It was about 330 this morning when they entered an apartment and shooting started. 38 year old Officer William Martin, a ten year veteran on the force, died of several gunshot wounds a short time ago at Shock Trauma. 36 year old Officer Hermann Brooks, a two year veteran, was shot in the head and chest. He was wearing a bullet resistant vest, so he was only bruised and was treated and released from University Hospital. Here's what police spokespeople, Officer Martin apparently got inside the front door and went up one flight of steps where he encountered the suspect, Woodson, who fired three times, striking the officer twice in the left side of the head and in the left shoulder. Detectives don't think Woodson went down the stairs past the fallen officer to try to get out a rear doorway. And there he encountered Officer Brooks and they exchanged shots. 20 year old Shawn Woodson of Gorman Avenue and 21 year old Tavon Hall of Oakford Avenue will be charged with first degree murder, attempted murder and other handgun charges. Woodson is in serious condition in tiny hospital with a gunshot wound to his pelvis. An automatic weapon was found in the apartment, but no narcotics were recovered. A worker says the remains appeared to have been carefully arranged inside the camper. It's unclear how long the bones have been there. They were sent to the state medical examiner's office for further investigation. Also in Prince George's County today, 218 month old girls are in good condition at Children's Hospital after drinking antifreeze. The father of the twin girls gave them liquid last night, thinking it was a lemon lime drink. Police say a neighbor gave the girl's mother a jug of antifreeze after she complained her car was overheating. The mother put the jug on the kitchen table and then left. Doctors say antifreeze can be fatal, even in small doses. Veterans from across the state heard some words of encouragement from Senator Barbara mikulski today. For instance, under Senator Metzenbaum, the original proposal, a World War two veteran who has for 45 years peaceably owned and used his M-1 carbine, could find himself doing prison time for merely failing to register his gun for transporting his rifle to an out-of-state hunting or target range without special government permission. The same vet could serve a prison term that exceeds the average time served by convicted murderers. A sensible alternative to gun bans would be the reform of our criminal justice system, a system which seven times released a Stockton, California, gunman to roam the streets. Additionally, a national instantaneous background check system for firearms purchasers would weed out undesirables while protecting the rights of decent citizens.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136090/file/252492#t=1279.74,1384.2"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136090/file/252492/transcript/70821/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"While such crimefighting proposals are not on the agenda of the powerful anti-gun media, they have been and still are endorsed by the much maligned National Rifle Association. There are just 20 students instead of the 110 the school had at its peak. So classes are held in this smaller building instead of the familiar brick house on Park Heights Avenue. And one former student says the size isn't the only thing that has changed over the years. It's a lot of you know, it's a lot of broken things in the school, a lot of things that don't work. They never get fixed. You know, you never see the janitor, you know. Other students we talked with dispute those claims. We need people to buy into quality education. We need people who will say, I will financially support that kind of a system. And if the school does not come up with the money, it needs to remain private. Well, there is talk that it could eventually become a semipublic school. What does that mean? How would that profit the school? Well, it would be like a wing of the public school system, you know, like the School for the arts, but still be somewhat autonomous. One of the diseases complications can be loss of vision. Because of that, Johns Hopkins is testing a new clinic that caters specifically to the needs of diabetics. Health Watch a I'm calling is here with that story. Okay. You've heard of low vision clinics that help people with vision impairments problems. This takes that segment and isolates it even further for the diabetic. Specifically for the diabetic. Now, imagine not being able to read your mail or write a check because you just can't see as well as you used to. Then imagine having to give yourself insulin injections. How do you do it? If your vision is blurry and you can't see it? Imagine you're diabetic and you're losing your vision. Try to see when your flights coming in or try to read that label because you have to watch your diet. Then imagine trying to give yourself an injection and reading the fine print when you read that small print. Barbara Dogan, a diabetic for 30 years, suffers one of the more common forms of vision loss among diabetics. Blood vessels, for some reason have overgrown onto her retina. The nerves needed to see those vessels break and they will bleed into that area. Fill this cavity with blood so you can't see through it. Together, they assess how the loss of vision has interfered with her everyday life, and they figure ways to help work with people around getting them involved with vocational rehabilitation services if they do need some kind of rehabilitation or retraining. Link them up with services such as rehabilitation, medicine, services. If they need some kind of physical therapy or occupational therapy. There are some sunglasses that we can get for you that are. Much better than the kind that you've been using. Then Barbara sees an eye specialist who offers tools that may help. A magnifying glass, for example, so you can measure the doses of insulin. A telescope to see distances. A magnifying glass for reading. Even a gadget that measures the insulin by sound. You can hear the clicks. Our goal used to be just to prevent blindness, and that continues to be our goal. But now we have a lot of people that are avoiding blindness, and yet they have other difficulties. It's not total blindness that the changes your life, it's the lack of vision. In some area I don't read as much. I don't so anymore. So I look at this as maybe helping me do the things I used to enjoy doing. Again, this new clinic is designed to cater to the person with diabetes. What makes the world go round? Money, right? That's one reason. Money, money, money. Well, that's also what brings most people through the lab doors to take part in an experiment where humans are the guinea pigs. It brings them in, but often it isn't enough to keep them there, to stick it out. And sometimes what the volunteer brings with the experiment that makes it work in medical research labs. Money is what brings most volunteers through the door. Certainly they earn some money from participating and people will find this a convenient way to accumulate a lump sum of money. At Tufts University in Boston.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136090/file/252492#t=3695.57,3836.42"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136090/file/252492/transcript/70821/annotation/36","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Money is a big incentive in attracting volunteers to participate in nutritional studies that can run as long as three months. Why are you doing this? Because I make some money and I don't like to cook for myself. And I already have the money. Spent money that comes to about $100 a week, plus a free private room. In return, volunteers eat strictly regulated diets, very strict and very regulated, and every bit work in the place. And if even if you live a little more so maybe a little piece of fat or something. You need to be called down to your room or else they will put on your dignity card. But you have to. You have to eat. The food is carefully measured, carefully cooked and carefully kept repetitive. Basically the same 2 or 3 dishes day after day, week after week. And as a result, the monotony after 34 days on a study can can wear on the volunteers. But on the day usually we do what we can within the parameters of the studies to make them as appetizing and tolerable for a long term. Well, we fantasize here about what we're going to do when we get out. Like what's our first meal is sirloin steak or a bowl of chili on the side and hash browns perhaps. But even if it becomes monotonous, the food is free. So are the recreational facilities and the private rooms. The outside world of Boston is open to the nutrition volunteers, but only on a limited basis. They can walk around, they can sightsee. They can even take in the theater. The only thing they can't do is eat. They don't have as many temptations if they're living here. Come on up. Good. And kept exercising in the name of science, try to keep pedaling. It often takes more than money to remain a human experiment. So I wanted to know more about it. And I'm a research technician myself in molecular biology, and I thought it would be fun to be a guinea pig instead of using animals as models myself. And for some, like Mildred Furlong, who has volunteered for a number of studies, the clinics are a buffer against loneliness. They meet so many people. I met people from England and all over, truly all over the world. We get reports about them and they make nice friends. I made an awful lot of friends. So it isn't always just the money. After all, in human experimentation, it's the human that makes the difference in research and in the changes in medicine and science that affect us all, which makes the human the last and perhaps some vital Lincoln such example. That certainly is the last link, because first, researchers must do years of testing on the cellular and animal level. And if everything works right, then man, is that last test. Still. Yes.
