At first glance, it's hard to believe that this petite 23 year old woman handles a big 18 wheeler. The new women born out of the 1960s and seventies. Now they're holding the stethoscopes, commanding the brigades and jockeying the horses to the winner's circle. Today, there's virtually no career that a young woman can have. Dale Ruth is one of these new young women. She's chosen a profession thought to be rough and tough, hard to handle, even for a man. What's it like being a woman trucker? I really like it because. Mansfield. Even though I didn't ask. Dale has been hauling loads up and down the East Coast for over a year now. And just what do the customers think when she walks in to tell him she's here with a delivery? When they tell me you're not gonna. The famous North Carolina deal is an independent trucker leasing most of her hauls out of Tom Laden's business in Dundalk, Maryland. Most women, I find, are very good because women tend to have a tendency to be more careful, considerate, more patient to men, and a lot harder on women. Clear it up a lot quicker than women will. Actually, it's not an easy job out there on a road. You're out there maybe seven days a week trying to figure out problems that you don't even know what the problems from. So it's very difficult job for them, but it gives them a chance to find out that all the men know that, you know, they're right there alongside of them. Driving these monstrous trucks is only one part of the job. Hooking up the long trailers takes some pretty heavy maneuvering. That's pushed all the way in and then you walk around and roll up your landing legs and make sure your your fifth wheel pin. It's locked all the way. Otherwise you're going to pull out. The trailer is going to go red on the ground. Now below this huge you'd think a whole crew of workers would show up to hook it down. That's not true. It's Dail's job. Most of the time Dale handles all this by herself, but on occasion she'll accept some offered help. Marti has known Dale since she started driving trucks. She's pretty good driver. She's very safe. She's very careful. And they'll have a lot more drivers like her out there. Some of these cowboys you got. And everywhere she goes, people would take a double look at it, you know, Can't believe how little she is driving that big truck. Dale drives a truck that's 53 feet long, eight feet wide, and carries loads up to £80,000. Imagine steering all that around. Tear your insides out. A couple of weeks. By the time you take a long time. Deliver. Time. Trying to get. Six days out of the week. Working as hard as that it would seem. The truckers must pull in a big paycheck, probably running every day. Okay, Independent, you probably make 50,000 a year, but. Your expenses. As far as insurance and permits and everything else that comes. Half to three quarters. So you really know what this. There's a lot of guys just because of the way. So was it the romantic lure of the open road that brought Dale to this profession? Let's talk for a couple of years.
