And a year ago, we saw him in the movie The Big Town, I remember, with Matt Dillon. Yes. And he plays the professional gambler who's running the card game and the roulette wheel there. Continuing this special edition of Siskel and Ebert about Hollywood's hidden stars, stars that we think are unjustly overlooked and not get the attention they deserve, even though, of course, our stars are not exactly anonymous. Occasionally, an actress comes along a seems to bring a sort of secret smile to her roles. She can be serious when she has to be, but she seems happiest when there's a wickedly humorous undercurrent to her material. And Susan Sarandon is an actress like that. She's got the kind of intelligence that directors look for when a role presents problems, when it's tricky, when it's complicated or involves a lot of psychological depth. But not all of these qualities were obvious into Brandon's first important screen role a role that not many people even remember. She played as the drug addicted daughter of a wealthy New York executive. In the movie, Joe Sarandon's overdose leads her father to kill her boyfriend, a murder he tries to hide. Why didn't you tell me about Frank? Why didn't you tell me Frank was dead? Because we didn't want to upset you. Not while you were in the hospital. So is that the reason? Certainly you would. Just coming down from the drugs. Was the subject too painful? The most famous and controversial movie in Tarantino's early career was Louis Malle's Pretty Baby in the early 70s, where she played a New Orleans prostitute who was raising her daughter right in the bordello. Was he pissed off? You never know me. That's all. I never killed anybody in my life. I never thought you did. And here is Susan Sarandon in the 1987 hit The Witches of Eastwick. She's up against a sly old double play by Jack Nicholson. And for once, Nicholson meets his match. You got to get up pretty early in the morning to upstage Jack Nicholson. But I think she just about does there whenever I see Susan Sarandon his name on a movie. I know one thing right away, and that is that the character she plays is not going to be boring and is not going to be routine. Her people are always very complicated and they usually face their problem with a certain offbeat, wry humor. They always have an angle on things. And that's certainly the case with her hit film Bull Durham, where she plays a baseball fan who picks a new lover every season from her local baseball team. The feeling you get in every surrounding performance is that someone is at home. They're there thinking, they're figuring and they're checking the angles. You know what's happened with her? Now movies are getting more adult, and Sarandon is right there in full power. And Bull Durham calls on everything an actress could want. It is one of the most complicated, challenging parts that an actress could do. And she delivers. And, you know, it's a good point, Jean, because she has that adult intelligence. Yeah. She simply couldn't play the kind of roles that were around like Molly Ringwald mother or she got it where she's got to be kind of the dunce and the kids are bright. She's going to be brighter than any kid that she ever has in the movies and brighter than most of the other people in the films, too. So it takes an intelligent screenplay and intelligent direction to make an intelligent actress look good and just long and hard for all the roles. She's probably had to turn down the staying power again, just like Tommy Lee Jones. This is over well over a decade now, and the consistency is there. I'm glad the movies are equal to her. I'm kind of a lone wolf. Mr. Glenn, you are way out of line. I advise you not to try to foist your view of morality on anybody else in this group. Each man here has volunteered to do a job. Each man here is devoting long hours of training to prepare for it, and that would be a typical Scotland role. There were even among the Mercury seven, even among these tough professional test pilot astronauts, he'd be the one they cast as the toughest one, the one who thought the other ones were wimps. The angrier he gets, the quieter he talks. That's the thing that interests me. This guy scares me. But yet he isn't fulminating. He isn't exploding. He's imploding, imploding. I can see it happening there. And I don't want to be around him. I'm I'm talking like I'm in one of his movies. That's how good he is, that it's really chilling. He has the power to turn it on without and he brings it. Look at Urban Cowboy, for example. Look at the tension he brings to that character. And what could they have done there? Shooting down at Gilley's down in Texas where the whole bar room is probably filled with blustering, loud, tall, muscular guys who come in and, you know, break off a beer. Can I go after you or something? This guy just sits there very quiet, very controlled, and he's more menacing than anybody in there. Well, you know what I'm thinking of? I'm thinking there's an Eastwood like quality in that. Don't mess with me. And I think what you say about his character seeming to have a past history, I think that's always true with him. I first spotted her in possibly her first film in 1975 when she was just 17. She appeared as the character of Miss Simi Valley in a beauty pageant comedy Smile, a wonderful film which sadly is not on video but should be. Griffith easily could have been yesterday's blond, just a body, but she's used her body and her intensity and her cockiness to great advantage in many subsequent films, including another fine picture from 75, The Mystery Knight Moves with Detective Gene Hackman protecting Griffith. You can be sure. Back on. Now, I came to tell you that I'm a private detective hired by your mother to take you back to L.A.. Are you kidding? No, I'm not. You can forget it. Not going back to them. At nine years later, Griffith was taking leading roles, including a sexy, confident one in Brian de Palma's thriller called Body Double. She played an actress in danger. Just come with me to the police. The police used to be you Listen to me, you weird. Now don't you type on me because I have friends. I'll break your legs. All right. I told you. In 1986, Griffith was no longer the girl under attack. She was the tease taking uptight yuppie Jeff Daniels for the ride of his life in the great film Something wild. He'd been married a long time. I suppose the title Something Wild, really best describes the on screen image of Melanie Griffith. That's what I think of when I'm going to see one of her movies. I like risk takers who use their bodies and their emotions, and that's what this young actress really does. She is quite special. You know, I think it's interesting here that we end with a clip that shows Tommy Lee Jones and Melanie Griffith together are two of our overlooked stars because frequently in their careers they've been in good but overlooked movies. They've had the occasional success, like Tommy Lee Jones with Coal Miner's Daughter. Or to a degree, something while was a success. But a movie after movie, including, in her case, Body Double. They haven't done it at the box office in the way that you might think they would. Considering how good the movies were. And I, of course like Body Double better than you did. But I liked her. You liked her in it. There's that long Hitchcock type scene in there that DePalma does, where we just see her face as she's being trailed by a man. Right. And wouldn't you like to have them in one movie? Scott Glenn. Melanie Griffith, Tommy Lee Jones. Susan Sarandon. What we're talking about one brain power to sexiness, anger pushing strong emotions. That's what I find lacking in most movies. Movies that travel the narrow emotional range. These people are genuinely exciting. You have probably described the cast of a movie that could not be written. In fact, it would be a real challenge to a writer to create a a movie where those four people would all be in the film because think of the tension. I mean, if you have those four people in a room, the secrets, the ways they have of suggesting there's more there than meets the eye, the sexual tension that you'd have going on in that room, it would be a heck of a movie. I'm telling you, with those four people, you know, the movie that would come closer to capturing it, something wild because all four of these people are pretty wild. And that's how Hollywood's Hidden Stars looked when we first taped it a year and a half ago. Or since then, of course, all of those stars have been busy making movies. But one of them in particular has had a very good year. And that's Melanie Griffith, who got an Academy Award nomination for her starring role in Working Girl. So she is not so hidden anymore. Welcome to the weekend edition of USA Today. Of course, it's Labor Day weekend, and that means family picnics, the end of the summer and the beginning of another school year. By the end of this week, almost every school in the USA will be open for the fall term. It's a busy time of year for parents and schoolchildren and for many of us, a terrifying one from finding the bus stop to buying clothes to picking classes. Getting ready for school can leave you in a daze. First day of school, you sort of want to go and don't want to go because you want to meet people and you want to meet the teachers. It's kind of weird because you don't remember your friends names and you just don't really get the hang of it. Five. It's too much work for the work guitar and harder during the year. Adults should remember the day they got married, the day they got divorced. Their first day on the job. That's the same kind of nervous energy that runs in a child when they go to school across the USA. Over 45 million kids will be headed back to school this fall. The majority, nearly 33 million of them, are elementary school children.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136087/file/252489#t=5344.65,5465.14"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136087/file/252489/transcript/70825/annotation/50","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And for many parents of these baby boomer kids, that very first day is almost more traumatic for them than for the children. I was handling it very fine until about a month ago. And every time I think about it, I break down in tears. It's 815 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. These children and their parents find reassurance and a rehearsal of sorts for the first day of school. Getting to class on time, meeting the teacher and sneaking a peek at new friends. According to experts, this dry run is one of the best ways to calm nerves and prepare for the big day. Hi, Claire. You ready for school this morning? For the majority of these children is their first time away from home. They need that reassurance that. That someone is going to be there. Someone who cares for them personally. There is a lot to take in that first day. But according to the experts, what children don't need is any more anxiety from their parents. They cannot say, I hope you don't miss your bus. I hope you don't get lost. It's strange the things that will worry children, even worried that they will come home and find the parents have moved. So reassure your child that the first day of school that they are possible. You'll be there waiting for him. We like that. For young children, back to school, shopping is a good way to channel nervous energy to help prepare for the big day. But by adolescence, that ritual takes on a whole new significance. There are images at stake and peers to consider. Those were the first day of school. That's going to give you a reputation and what you do on the first day of school. That's your reputation.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136087/file/252489#t=5466.01,5553.49"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136087/file/252489/transcript/70825/annotation/51","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"If you look bad, you'll be embarrassed. Some people claim that the real fear that they have is that they will be different or odd. So let your youngster choose the clothes that he or she wants to wear that first day of school. Even if it looks punk or disgusting to you, if the youngster feels that he or she fit in, that's helpful. But fitting in can go just so far. Today's kids are targets of big budget, sophisticated marketing campaigns selling clothes with price tags to match carry to the extreme. Clothes become an unhealthy measure of personal worth. A lot of kids forget something at the store, and if they're in like lower class compared to some of the real popular kids, they get picked on for what they wear and stuff. So they try to outdo themselves and try to be real popular. According to experts, building enough self-confidence to resist intense peer pressure in adolescence begins at an early age. Parents can help by offering kids choices in colors and clothes very early on, encouraging them to make independent decisions. When the child has had choices and seen how they work out. Sometimes they will not choose the special brand name and they will feel enough self-confidence to have no name or their own name on their belongings. Letting go and fitting in makes the first day of school a bittersweet time for both parents and kids, especially for parents of very young children. But experts stress the message parents should send is that school is an adventure and above all, an adventure to share. It'll be a hard driving job, if at all, for the first day, because we've just experienced a lot of things together that I've enjoyed. And but I know you'll have fun sharing those things, too, when he comes home.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136087/file/252489#t=5554.69,5661.82"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136087/file/252489/transcript/70825/annotation/52","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"As we mentioned, more than 45 million students will be attending elementary and secondary schools in the US this fall, and that's 150,000 more than last year. Here's this week in entertainment with USA Today entertainment editor Jack Cary. On television this week. There's a controversial new documentary called Days of Rage. It's on Wednesday night on PBS. It takes a look at the youth movement on the Palestinian side of the ongoing Middle East crisis. We want the world to see that we are not terrorists. We are not people who are doing something wrong. We want them to see that we are fighting for something that any, any other person would do. It's based upon a one woman show that already won a Tony on Broadway. It's playing on Broadway now with Ellen Burstyn. But this stars the original Tony winner, Pauline Collins. They've expanded the piece about a British woman who drops out of her marriage for a week to have a fling in Greece and sort of discovers herself in the process. It's an odd movie, but it might just appeal to the middle aged women movie goers who are busy sending their kids off to school and can fantasize about this romantic comedy. The big news in music, of course, this week is the MTV Awards. It's a rough and ready show, not as quick as the Grammys, but in a lot of ways, it's more in touch with what the people really like. Arsenio Hall will host again. And the big news of the awards is that Madonna will be on in a live television performance for the first time in about six years. The other big news at the MTV Awards, there will be four new categories this year rap, dance, postmodern and heavy metal coming up on USA Today. Well, in the case of Harry Connick Jr, it has made him confident, outspoken, entertaining, and a very good piano player. So gather round your TVs now for a music lesson from Harry. Shouldn't he be playing rock and roll? Wouldn't that be an easier way to get thousands of screaming fans to have more fun at Rolling Stones concert than any jazz concert, including mine? Because it's like fun. I mean, those guys, a party on the stage and running around with wild clothes, a scream, and everybody's having a good time. But I mean, that's like garage music. You know what I mean? That music is simple to play. I mean, it is. I mean, nobody's going to tell you that they're doing anything harmonically that complex. So the reason I don't play rock and roll is because there's no such thing as rock and roll piano anymore. We'll fit like 50s rock and roll. Sounds like this. That's like rock and roll piano. That's nobody plays them anymore. The other kind of piano is this kind of stuff. And just like after about five mins of that you turn green. Now what is this new age music is. Is that of any interest to a serious piano player? No. I mean see, like it's like George Winston, right. Who's a good friend of mine, is a great piano player. He has a lot of people don't know that George Weston can play, you know, that George Wilson will go at Lincoln Center and he'll go. And he'll do that for like 30 minutes. It seems that everyone's getting into the act. First Lady Barbara Bush is leading the effort to encourage our youth to read. So is the Duchess of York. Fergie's budgie books are printed in the current issue of Redbook. Children's books represent the fastest growing category in all publishing. And that's no fairy tale. Once upon a time, there was a tiny little business that grew up to be a great big giant. Now, that may sound like a fairy tale, but in the world of children's publishing, it's just the facts. Children's books right now are booming beyond most of our beliefs. Every morning, we think, is this really going to continue? Is it really true? Fairy tale? Skin come true. It can happen to you. At Harvard. When I first came into the business, it was very mom and pop oriented, much smaller companies. It is now much more big business. It's no storytelling to say that $1 billion a year means big business in anybody's book. Over the last ten years, hardcover books have run up a 150% increase in sales and the number of titles once on the slide in the 70s has doubled since 1978. All the baby boomers are now having their own babies and they are very concerned and much more concerned with the education of their children than prior generations of parents have been. And so they are buying more books. Baby boomers babies have created another peak on the population charts, Books appealing to children up to age five make up the biggest part of the market right now. Now they number between 3 and 400 nationwide. Stores like Washington, D.C., Cheshire Cat offer personalized service. And usually the dog is up to no good. I think that the depth of inventory and the knowledgeable staff that that a children's bookstore has and the backlist becomes your bread and butter. And this is good for publishing. Star power is also good for publishers. Lady Sarah Ferguson's newly published book may earn royalties for royalty. First Lady Barbara Bush is coauthored venture with SIF. Fred proved so successful she's scratching out a sequel with First. But Molly, you want me to read that one First one. All right. That book was published by Random House in 1933, and it is selling more copies today than it was then. For instance, the Sesame Street books we do would be That makes me angry or it's no fun to be sick. We also sold over 2 million copies of Never Talk to Strangers. So it's much more issue oriented with all the books on the shelves. How can a parent tell what makes a good children's book? The answer is the same thing that makes any book good and makes any book last. Good writing. Wonderful characters that grab you. You want to learn more about them, who they are. A plot that pulls you in and moves you along. Emotional content that means something to you. And there's also an element of luck in there. And children's publishers are betting that you'll find lots of good books for years to come and business will keep right on booming. But I really feel very confident that it is not going to go away. I think once people get hooked on reading, not only do they continue to read, but they then pass it on to their children in the end.
