It's morning Edition with Don Scott. All right. All right. Good morning, 701. It is a nice morning. Yes it is. This is this morning edition. I just looked out the window. We have crystal clear skies over TV Hill right now. However, we got a call within the past 15 minutes or so from Westminster talking about a little bit of a miss going on, an indication that we're still seeing bands of clouds and, you can't say shower actors. There's nothing on the radar. But in other words, there's still some action swirling around the area of low pressure that's pulling out of our way. So let's take a look at the AccuWeather forecast. I think for a while. Anyway, this forecast still going to hold true. Clouds and some sun. I've been saying for the past hour and a half we'll see more than some sun this afternoon will officially, I'm sure, make that change at noon. We're going to have a gorgeous sunset this evening. Back to you, Ron. Thank you very much, Chuck. In the news this morning, Maryland's past political landscape is changed today. Former vice president and Maryland Governor Spiro Agnew died overnight on the Eastern Shore at the age of 77. Agnew was a nationally obscure governor who rose to become Richard Nixon's vice president on the strength of his die hard conservatism. However, he was forced to resign in disgrace in 1973 when he pleaded no contest to a count of tax evasion. Earlier this morning, we talked with former Governor Marvin Mandel about his memories of Spiro while we had political differences, and we're on opposite side of the fence on all almost all political issues here at the same time, when it came to the state issues, felt that there had to be a spirit of cooperation.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136440/file/253032#t=104.98,206.86"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136440/file/253032/transcript/71293/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And I think it was that spirit of cooperation on the predominantly state issues that he would be remembered for. Well, I was very surprised to learn about it, and, I did not realize it now. He had leukemia. He did, you know. Okay. Have you talked to him recently or. No, I haven't talked for a while, but I've kept up three members of the family. Okay. You you were quite close with him. What do you think? Mr. Agnew's a major accomplishment was as governor of the state of governor of the state during the times of the riot. He was able to get people calmed down and, keep the riots from spreading further. And they had. And to bring the people together. Well, he had he had, strength. And he wasn't afraid to take a position. Well, he was relatively controversial even during that period. Here's Jane Rowe below in the. It's eight minutes after the hour. Former Vice President Spiro Agnew died yesterday in a Maryland hospital at the age of 77. He'll be remembered as one of the most colorful American political figures of our time. Spiro Agnew was a little known Maryland governor when Richard Nixon tapped him as his running mate in 1968. Agnew was a conservative political brawler, ready and willing to challenge anyone he considered a threat to America. He ridiculed critics in the news media as nattering nabobs of negativism and criticized anti-war civil rights protesters. I'm the first to admit that there has been discrimination, that there has not been equal opportunity. But I say that these things can be brought about through the system that made America great, and not by tearing down that system. Victor Gold is Agnew's former press secretary. He was a very articulate spokesman for a point of view of what I believe was a majority of the American people, and a very controversial and difficult time in American political life. But in 1973, Agnew pleaded no contest to income tax evasion and resigned, still publicly declaring his innocence. I categorically and flatly denied the assertions that have been made by the prosecutors with regard to their contentions of bribery and extortion on my part. Agnew blamed his disgrace on President Nixon, feeling he'd been dumb to divert attention from the brewing Watergate scandal. The two men never spoke again, but Agnew did attend Mr. Nixon's funeral in 1994. He said it was time to put 20 years of resentment aside. Marijuana in the nation of lost, a man who played a huge part in our political history, for good or bad. Former Vice President and Maryland Governor Spiro Agnew died overnight on the Eastern Shore at the age of 77. His resignation from the vice presidency in 1973 shook the nation, and all eyes were focused on his tax evasion trial right here in Baltimore. CBS correspondent Robert Shaklee filed this report that day back in 1973. Attorney general of the United States normally doesn't go to court to direct a prosecution, but a criminal defendant isn't normally the vice president of the United States. Nor do carloads of Secret Service agents normally circle a federal courthouse during a criminal proceeding. Agnew and his three lawyers on one side, on the other, the attorney general, his assistant in charge of the criminal division, the Baltimore prosecutor and his whole staff, government, legal experts, clerks and secretaries. Judge Walter Hoffman made it clear quickly what the proceedings were about. First, the question, did Agnew fully understand his rights? I do, Your Honor, said the vice president. Then the charge evasion of income taxes for the year 1967. How did Agnew plead? We plead no low contender, said Agnew's lawyer. No contest. The judge. I am required to advise you that no low contender is the legal equivalent to a plea of guilty. Do you thoroughly understand, Agnew? I do, your honor. As he left the court, the former vice president was publicly still maintaining innocence of any criminal activity. He said he acted as he did for personal reasons and for the national interest. Gentlemen, I believe you all received copies of the prepared statement that I read to the court in open court. As I said in that statement, the reason that I have changed my decision about this matter is because I believe it would be against the national interest to have a brutalizing effect on my family to go through a long two year struggle concerning this matter. Now, the main sticking point still is Ross Perot. President Clinton wants him in the debates. Bob Dole does not. And to the relief of the Dole campaign. The bipartisan Presidential Debate Commission has ruled Perot doesn't qualify. The debate Commission declared Ross Perot has no chance of winning this year's presidential election, and thus should not be allowed in the debates. Participation is not extended to candidates because they might prove interesting or entertaining. The Perot camp announced it will sue the commission this week in an effort to stop the debates. The public is outraged by this self-serving decision of the Republicans and Democrats. But the commission's decision came after academics and other experts reviewed Perot's sagging poll numbers. But Perot's running mate argued his party could win the election because they have a secret plan. Our campaign strategy has been to maintain a low political profile until the last weeks of the campaign, and then use our moneys to conduct a political blitz. Now, Perot's campaign money this year comes from the taxpayers. Since he got 19% of the vote in the last election, he qualified for $30 million in federal funds after he agreed to limit the spending of his own money. CBS news has learned Perot has not ruled out trying to give that federal money back so that he can dip into his own unlimited bank account. Thank you. And our medical report this morning. New concerns over common critical care procedure that may be harming patients more than it helps them. Our health correspondent, Doctor Howard Taubman is here to tell us all about it. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Josie. Now, critically ill patients have generally benefited over the years from new and more sophisticated ways to monitor and treat them. But now comes a study suggesting that some folks might really be better off if we did less. It is very common practice to monitor patients in intensive care by using one of these a right heart catheter, a thin tube fed through a vein into the right side of the heart to provide data that is used to help treat a patient. But now, a study from the University of Virginia finds, in general, patients who have this procedure tend to do worse, not better. We believe is that we currently don't know how to use the right heart catheter to get optimal benefit for our patients. We don't know who should get it. The study found those who had right heart catheterization in an intensive care setting were 25% more likely to die compared to comparable patients, not catheter ised. The problem, however, may not be with the procedure itself, but what it leads to. Patients who got these catheters also got a lot of other devices and a lot of other things done to them. And it may be the cumulative effect of all of those interventions. The catheter may be a marker for an aggressive or an invasive style of care, and that style of care may be associated with worse outcomes. Now this study has some real holes in it, but still it does raise an important issue.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136440/file/253032#t=2266.17,2357.01"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136440/file/253032/transcript/71293/annotation/23","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And that is, does everyone, maybe someone in your family who is critically ill really need or benefit from the aggressive care that is increasingly common these days? Agnew was born in Baltimore, elected governor of Maryland in 1966, becoming only the fifth Republican to ever be elected to Maryland's highest office. He gained attention for his handling of the 1968 riots, shortly thereafter was nominated as Richard Nixon's vice president, but he would resign in disgrace after a scandal in 1973. But first, Mark McEwen has honors for Barbara Streisand and Jane Rossville. I was going to tell us about some new recommendations to reduce the risk of airbag injuries to children. Very important story coming up with Jane. It's 11 minutes before the hour. The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending that automobile air bags be redesigned to accommodate low impact crashes and, more importantly, to protect children. Bob War explains it happened again in Nashville just last week. A five year old girl riding in the front seat of this van was killed by an airbag in a low speed crash. They are two of 26 children killed in the last four years by passenger side airbags that were designed to protect adults. This has got to stop. A device that was meant to save the lives of adults should not kill children. Now, the NTSB wants federal regulators to consider mandating changes that would reduce the power of airbags and keep them from activating and low speed crashes when they're not needed. The safety board also urged states to require that all children up to age eight ride in approved car seats, and strongly warn parents never to put their kids up front. I was completely under the misimpression and I think the public at large is there is a there was a tremendous lack of understanding about the dangers of airbags. There's no real dispute. Airbags do save lives, perhaps hundreds each year. But it's also true they're killing an increasing number of children. A crisis safety advocates argue that demands action. Spiro Agnew became sick at his Ocean City condominium yesterday and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. Ron Mattes tells us it's been nearly 30 years since Agnew was elected governor of Maryland and burst into the national spotlight. Spiro Agnew was serving as Maryland's governor when he was called upon by Richard Nixon to be his vice president. Agnew himself called it a bolt out of the blue. If the nation knew little of the man born here in Baltimore in 1918, the son of a Greek immigrant, it soon learned Agnew's harsh ridicule of liberals and Vietnam War protesters, whom he dubbed an effete corps of impudent snobs, drew much attention and criticism and applause from conservatives, leading to a win for the Nixon Agnew ticket in 1968.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136440/file/253032#t=3585.02,3719.77"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136440/file/253032/transcript/71293/annotation/35","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Two years later, the vice president told The Nation what it was like to work under Richard Nixon. It's amazing how how good it's been to be a vice president, operating with a president who causes one, no insecurities, only provides the greatest in support and maintains, proper communication at all times. And, indicates that he learned a great deal about being a vice president himself. But that view drastically changed just three years later when, in the midst of the Watergate scandal, Agnew resigned, walking into federal court downtown and pleading no contest to one count of income tax evasion. I believe you've all received copies of the prepared statement that I read to the court in open court. As I said in that statement, the reason that I have changed my decision to fight this matter is because that I believe it would be against the national interest to have a brutalizing effect on my family to go through a long two year struggle concerning this matter. You also may be aware what I said in open court, that I categorically and flatly denied the assertions that have been made by the prosecutors with regard to their contentions on bribery and extortion on my part. Spiro Agnew never spoke to Richard Nixon again, saying he felt the president threw him to the wolves to appease his enemies. But Agnew was present at Nixon's funeral in 1994. Spiro Agnew was 77 years old. Public officials who knew Agnew are remembering him today.
