Hi, I'm Jackie Hall. And I'm Dan Hanson. The question of the Day is, are women being discriminated against in the church? Some people feel that they are. And since women make up more than half of the church's membership, they say that something must change. Others feel that the ministry is no place for women. Today, we'll hear from both sides. Civility three and maryland education is their future. I'm t monti and we'll talk about that. My name is tim walz. And today on the entertainment page, it's cool in the gang and we find out about richard pryor re staffing his company overseer Shirley Williams from the Antioch church of god is with us and also elder Lemuel Fuller from the two way apostolic holiness is with us to discuss the roles of women in the church. Today. We'll be back on city lined with sexism from the pulpit coming up next. I welcome the city line again. So the show today is laugh and our discussion is sexism from the pulpit. And joining us for our discussion is, first of all, overseer Shirley Williams, who is with the Antioch Church of God. Welcome. Obviously, Williams and also Elder lend me a fuller who is with the two way apostolic holiness. And I guess you know, probably the best way to kick this off is to simply ask Elder Fuller, what is your view about women's role in the church? I feel that they have many ministries and the church to do all the feel that they have a place also in the church. I don't feel that they have the same equality and the same position as the man. Can I ask you for the basis of your feelings? Yes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=127.17,268.91"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's written by a Pastor Paul, that the woman should not teach use of authority over the man. For this reason, this makes a little different reality in her role in the church. The. Let me make sure I understand you, because you started off saying that women have a ministry in the church. Do you believe that women should be or could be ministers in the church? I when I use the word ministry, I mean, the word ministry means to serve. And that does not necessarily mean preach. She could be I'm sure there's many things for her to do in the church, sing, play the music on the choir. But when it comes down to preaching God's word and utilizing the pulpit in the same manner of the woman, I don't feel they have this quality to do so. Overseer Williams How do you respond to what the elder has said? Okay. Basically when you look at the men and women in the church, when they come into the church and receive Christ in their life, they become a new creature. We are all saved by one spirit. When that spirit enter into man and enter into womanhood. And no one has authority over that spirit as to point out which way for that spirit to go. Elder Fuller Then you don't believe that all men and all women were created equal? I feel that they were all created equal, equal. But I will also go on to say that though they were created equal, a man was created first, and from inside came the woman. And if recorded in the Book of Genesis, that the woman would look up to the man and the man would rule over her. I don't feel that we should put our foot on her.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=270.29,389.42"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I think she should have freedom to go forth and do. But as I look at the Bible, as I look at it from Genesis, the Revelation as I look at the four major dispensation, when I look at the role of the woman God has abandoned, God has planned that the woman, the man would have prestige over the woman. And so you would agree with with Timothy one, chapter two, verse 11 and 12, which says essentially that let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, not to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. I feel this part of Scripture as it is written, as it should be done, other than this group has to deal with her learning. Not now. And I don't want to say that the woman has to go to the church set in charge of be silent, can't saying can't do anything because they did say let it within her breath. Praise the Lord. But when it comes down to her role for teaching and going for the Bible does suffer. Not a woman to teach our use of authority over the man, but to be in silence, but to be in so she can sing. She the thing I teach but not teach her. But she can teach Sunday school, but not teach from the pulpit. Not teach from the pulpit. Now, the Bible does say that all women should teach the young women. And as far as the Bible is concerned, that is all the scripture you get for as a woman teaching. So are you saying that old women should not teach young men? I'm saying that they should only play the role of and as it was written, I feel that the men should teach to me and I feel the women should teach the women.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=389.54,501.38"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But now the scripture also says, Now, are you my witnesses? Now, what she has said, and I agree with her when the Holy Ghost come in individually, men and women get saved alike. But when it comes down to the administration, when it comes down to their dealing in the church, then the man has the priority over the woman. Okay, we're going to come back. I'm sure that overseer Williams has a response to this. And so we're going to come back with that response right after this. Back. I'm talking about sexism from the pulpit. And before our break, Elder Fuller had made some points concerning the role of women in the church. If we wanted to give Overseer Williams an opportunity to respond back. Basically, when we go into the Bible from the from Genesis to Revelation, we find that God didn't make man in his image and man failed to do what the requirement was. After he failed to do the requirement, God had to redeem men back into the fold of Christ. So He redeemed man back through the seed of woman. Okay, So. Man what this redeem man back through the seed of woman. And this is how man came back through woman Through Jesus Christ. He came through the womb of Mary, which was the savior of the world. Let me ask you, overseer. Williams And then what should be the role of women in the church? In the church. The role of women should be whatever God appoint or anoint them to do. There should be no diversities of spirit. Okay. When you go dividing memberships or dividing people in the church, you are dividing the spirit of God. But Elder Fuller has said that the Bible says that women should be silent.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=501.95,710.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And yet you're saying that we should go according to the word of God. How do we get the differences here? Okay. If you start the biblical history of Timothy, he were talking in the Effusion church. These women at this time had just received Christ in their life. They had just came out of the world of see Christ came into their life and they wanted to do everything in the same manner as everyone else in the church. And he stated in the ninth verse that let the women have modest apparel. Not too much bravery. These women had too much bravery. They were overdressed like the world. How do we get the differences between your two interpretations, both using the Bible as both you and Timothy? As a matter of fact, with both his and Timothy. But we have to realize that he was not talking to the university church, so he was talking to the local church in a feature where he was having problems with women just coming to Christ and not adorning themselves. And so you would say that Elder Fuller has taken it out of context? Somewhat. Yes, he. Let me just go to another point in the Bible, because, you know, the Bible is a is a wonderful text. It can be used to do to justify an awful lot of things. In Galatians chapter three, verses 26 to 28, it says there is need a Jew, no Greek. There is neither bon nor free. There is neither male, no free nor female, for ye are all one in Jesus Christ. Would you tend to agree with that Elder for the Scripture is right, but it has nothing to do with especially a woman role in church. This has to do with acceptance of one coming into salvation.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=712.11,815.73"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"In other words, when the Spirit of God come in the Jew, he's not going to look over the Jew in order to recognize the Gentile, whoever come and is in Christ and neither male or female, we all have one in Christ Jesus. Okay, Remember that people at home can join in our discussion by calling us at 481 1313. We're alive and we're ready for your phone calls. And we have Bishop James Thornton, who is at the mike stand. Yes, sir. I have a question for the C and Williams. In the first Timothy third chapter and the first verse, it states this is a true saying If a man desire the office of a bishop, he masculine. These are the good work of Bishop, then must be blameless. The husband of one wife, vigilant, sober of good behavior given to hospitality, have to teach, he goes also down in the eighth verse, it talks about the deacons of Bishop Thornton. We're going to have to just ask. Yes. What is the point that you'd like to point? I want to make with overseer Williams is since the Scripture speaking in a mass, then turn for the bishop and the elder in the deacon. How then can a woman preach in the pulpit in lieu of the scriptures? Okay, When one come to Christ, when one come to Christ, they are a new creature. You're no more flesh. You're not dealing with the fleshly body. We're dealing with the spirit that dwells within that person. In other words, when one speak in other tongues as the Spirit of God gives utterance, we speak in tongues the same way. We're not dealing with the humanity part of man. We're dealing with the spiritual part of one being in Christ a new creature.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=816.96,921.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So, Bishop Thornton, you obviously believe that women should not preach according to the Scriptures. She I'm quoting Scripture yet to what I want her to give me a scriptural one did preach or I'm reading from the Scripture. The only way that we know who can, who cannot preach is about the Scripture. What about how do you respond to the assessment from many people that the Bible was written by men? I respond that it would then therefore, more than likely. Reflect a man's point of view. How do you respond to that? Well, God has no respect of persons. God is just and God is righteous. But God makes up the ground rules. And certainly God does not fight against God and God is a spirit. So consequently, we have to obey Paul, the apostles, and otherwise we wouldn't know the role of the Lord. And we find Paul here writing not only Paul, but Peter did the same in the Scripture, and the Bible plainly tells us he that believe only as the Scripture had said. Now, when you come to the ministry, we have definite guidelines in the Scripture about Ministry of Women and men that I am sure go ready. I would like to say that the first message that was ever carried in the New Testament church was carried by a woman. Jesus said, Let me ask you a question to watch while he went to pray at one point. And when he rose up from the tomb, he told Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother was alone to go and tell his disciples to meet him. These women minister and also if you look in at 936, you will find a woman named Tabitha, which was a woman disciple. She was a great disciple.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=921.88,1031.77"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"She did many great works for Christ, for the church. And this woman was outgoing with all of her deeds. That's at nine and 36. We also found the Bora, which was one of the women of the Old Testament. She led a military army. She was a judge of Israel. She judged over Israel because the man was afraid to go and deliver God's people like he had told them to do. So you're saying all of this to say that women then are capable of preaching and being ministers? I'm saying that women are qualified, capable and has been preaching and will continue to preach. I guess I hear one other thing that that there is biblical justification for women being involved in teaching and preaching. There is. And at least in carrying the message, there is biblical proof, I mean, proof in the Bible. And also, if you want to use the word teach, these ministers are allowing women to teach whatever position they're in, whether they're on the pulpit. They're teaching to the church. They allow them to teach in Sunday school. Silence me totally to shut up. And if we want to allow them to teach and sing, if if you believe the Scripture as you have stated, you should let all the women in your churches just shut up. Don't try to point out certain qualifications on the women. If you want us to preach it, never say it. Even in the Scripture, let a woman not to preach it said Keep silent. So silence. To what point? Let me just ask you this. Do you believe. Do you believe that the church is a is a static organization, the church as an organization? Do you think that's a static or a dynamic organization that that in fact, things may have been one way 2000 years ago, but, you know, in 1984, maybe things have to change.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=1032.73,1151.47"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/9","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The scripture says what you use in scripture. So whoever wrote 2000 years ago yesterday, well, God changes not. How about the church? The word is God. And when God's Word go out, he's not going to change. Now that word keep silent. The Bible say learn in South. Now, for his women, preaching is going to follow. May I interrupt you for just a moment? We're going to have to go to a break. We're back with our topic of the day, sexism from the pulpit with overseer Shirley Williams and Elder lemme your fuller and the conversation is beginning to heat up. But we're going to go to the phones right now. Certainly. Good afternoon your live on City Line. Do you have a question or comment? I have both one on that that based on the Bible. But understand that there are many women that were spiritual leaders, such as Ruth and some others. Now, I don't know if there's a difference between spiritual leaders and spirit of teachers, but another word is the Bible, which is the Word of God. And it shouldn't be a debate on it without the word event. And even though we may feel unfair about it because we learned in today's time the word is the word. Now there's a difference between leading and teaching. Then please explain it to me. Okay, Elder, follow. This is a lead in and it is a different thing, leading and teaching. Sure, there's men who have been called to lead, but yet there are others who have been given the gift of teaching. And the caller would say that there are women who've also been chosen to lead.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=1398.77,1520.62"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/11","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I'll just root, for example, Ruth and those on the in the Old Testament were given a lines to lead in somewhat. In other words, whatever she wants you to do, whether you're a man or woman, a sister, assistant, me, she's over that particular person. Okay, let's bring in someone from home again. Hi. Your live on City Line. Good evening. I'd like to, uh, make a comment. Um, our to follow. Um, I have always thought that there was such a thing as a calling, and I feel as though if you get this calling, you got it. That if you're male or female, then you are qualified to preach. And I'd just like to know what your comment is on this. Thank you for the question. I'd like to comment by saying, first of all, God is not going against his word. First of all, the Bible say how can they heal without a preacher and how can he preach except he be set by God? Now, God is not going to call or send a woman against his word, against his will. When they become preachers, then they have to use authority. Oh, I'm not the man. Can I have a comment? Why don't you let me finish? When she walked in the pulpit, when she began to preach and she looks around in the audience and asked the deacon to raise an offering, he's got to do that.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=1521.25,1637.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/12","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"If she says to the congregation, Let's stand. I don't care how many men is in there. They look stupid if they don't stand. So when she does this, she's using authority over the man and on the corner, the pastor pull it out. So you're saying that God doesn't call women and pretend I don't feel that God even calls The woman must. Let's go in the pulpit. Overseer Williams, Where you called, I was anointed. Okay. I have been. I have been anointed by the power of God. Okay. Where do I get the calling from? Who called, who or who called? Whatever. I couldn't say. But I have been anointed by the power of God. And also, I would like to say that Mary carried the word of God, which was Jesus Christ. She carried that. She carried him in her womb. And she delivered that word on to the world and to unto myself unto man. And they feed and they say that there is neither. There is neither born nor free there. And this is still the apostle Paul talking. There is neither Jew nor Greek. There is neither male. Praise God, no female. We are all one when we come into Christ Jesus everyday. We've got a question from the audience. Let's take that now. Yes, ma'am. I'd like to make a statement first and then I'd like to make quickly, please. Okay. I think that you're using the Bible to discriminate against women. And I also want to ask you, if the young males in your church and if they're being taught by females or if your Sunday school classes are taught by men. Not one in the book. So what you're saying is it's okay for her to teach that child in the home, but it's not all right if that child go out into the society that some other woman can instruct that person on to have to adjust their sales teaching in the home and teaching the Bible in church. We have guidelines. We have rules. We have orders in our church and at home. I have an order at church. We have orders. And what it was the audience and the church. That is the order we go by. Okay. And she came from coming in at that instant, gave banks like Rise unto the Lord and spoke with him to all of them that look for redemption to Jerusalem.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=1750.35,1952.66"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What it looked like she if she was in there and was talking to them and telling them of Jesus redemption, it certainly looks as though she was preaching the gospel and in some ways and advocate when Peter was in I think it was Peter was in prison. Okay, let's let's let the elder follow response, please. So I'm going to let al the phone to respond to you by the end of the phone. Okay. Thank you. Well, she was there speaking and held Jesus, as it were, in arms. But speaking in that manner and preaching is two different things. People does not realize that you must be anointed. You must be called of God. Above all that you must know how to make plain the word of God. And this is what you call preaching. Okay. I would like to say that also in Joel, the Scripture plainly say that in the last days that God will pull out his spirit on all flesh. Sons and daughters would prophesy. All men would dream dreams, and young men should see visions. And that spirit has been poured, poured out on man and woman. But I think where men had a tendency to error is when they looked at the woman flesh too openly, they forgot about the Spirit of God. Okay. Thank you. We've got a question from the audience. So I just want to make a comment. Um, I believe that women do have the right to preach. I think they're doing coming down the years that black ministers use this position to keep women down because they would discriminate against. And they use this to hold the so they can feel themselves feel like they were a man because everybody has to have somebody discriminate.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=1953.44,2056.34"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And so this is typical discrimination. A black man wouldn't want to, you know, say that he couldn't do the same thing as a white man. And a woman should have the same ability as a man do. Okay. Let Elder Fuller respond. Oh, we would be very well out of line to hold the woman down. Let us look at the reality of the thing that is in all churches. You have more women than you do men. And I would be well, hope today if someone could really show me scriptural where a woman prays because we have women in the church. You have a larger church. You don't keep the woman down. Because if you keep the woman down, you're going to also keep the basis of the church not to speak. So we don't want to discriminate. We want to do everything we can. But yet we have to stay with the word of God. Elder Fuller And yet overseer Williams has been quoting you passages where women did either preach or teach or carry the word, and yet you don't seem to be convinced. No, she has not yet. She have told me your scripture where they prophesy. I've also heard about, well, the prophets was there, but even from the fall and behold, it goes back to the Book of Revelation. There is no scripture that no one could show me where a woman stood up in front of an audience of people and delivered God's Word. Okay, let's bring the home audience in once again. Your live on City Line. Yes, Kyra. Go ahead, please. I'm Dr. Howard Dean, philosophy, theology. And first, I'm going to make my comment very brief. Go ahead. He divided himself up and put me on earth and I'm having a problem. Okay. But the fact that I want to get to that. They are men and women. Important because we are not complete bodies complete. But we need men and women and we need their views. Okay. So I don't think that the gentleman is right. And I have a very rough marriage and I don't know. Okay. We're going to have to ask you to wrap it up, please. When people say that, you know that this guy said that, man, that's the Bible and he's already interpreted the Bible correctly. Okay. Elder Fuller, have you do you have women that agree with your position? Surely a lot of in your church? Yes. Outside your church. Outside. Also other women involved in the church. Sure. Obviously, we do. You have men? We have a large I mean, yes, we're white. And they take your ministry. They accept your ministry, their leadership. Yes. And I also would like to quote a scripture that it says that there are different administration, there are diversity as a gift, but the same spirit. Okay. Let's take a question from the audience. If if I was wondering how long you've been in the ministry and if so, through your ministry, have you have a fellowship with women? Sure, I have fellowship. Welcome. I tried it, but every time I look at God's Word, I doesn't feel comfortable at all. Now, let me also ask you concerning the having respect to person. The thing that I do, brother, is that regardless of how I feel, I go to the written word of God. The question a little bit too long for me to get all of it in, but the apostles was laid out for us better than they will open up their understanding of what they ought to do after the fall of the Holy Ghost. Now I go by what the Apostles did, how they carried out their administration and mean. I said this very quickly. We're running out of time. Sure. This morning I spoke with Miss Anna Anana Bowen, a concerned citizen in support of the legislation. Well, I think that the bottom line is that people need to understand how important it off in quality education is to the total city, that it doesn't just affect the children, but it does affect everyone, the community at large, and that we need to understand that at this point we do not have enough money to offer our children a quality education. And three way means the difference between $5 million in the first year and $50 million by 1980 89. The three address itself of equitable spending among students. In other words, I understand that there's a disparity in the amount of money spent on students educating students here in the state. Yes, it does. 33a as opposed to one A, which is the increased state funding level that the governor has included in his budget. Three represents the most equitable way to resolve that particular problem. One eight does give us increased state funding, but it does not address the problem as well as three does. Okay. Three is something that the legislators vote on and we the voters don't have a direct. Exactly what happened in Minneapolis this past Friday. Well, there was an issue. There was a vote and it was taken on pension reform, unfortunately, from the beginning of the legislative session. Pension reform was tied with increased state funding. We are angry about that. It did not have to be done. But I think that what people need to understand is that the monies to fund even one A are already there and that we have been used.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088#t=2523.41,2628.07"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85887/file/174088/transcript/42051/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We have been. Those two issues have been tied in together and to the best of my knowledge, it has not been clearly stated what amount of revenue from pension reform will go, particularly to education and teachers, Community people and parents need to all rally around this most important issue if they feel used because they have their pension has been taken away from them, then at least they should be able to say, Well, we got it back at the other end and increased state salaries in the only way that they can do that is to help us by supporting three. What is the basic difference between supporting three AA and supporting one? OC As I said before, one A does does give us increased amount of moneys, but it does not give us the amount of money that we need to equitably address the problem. One, it is capped after the fourth year. We would have to go back down to fight all over again. Three says that there was a valid attempt over the course of five years to reach 75% equalize state state funding rate and one A is a set amount of money each year we get. Now, these are the exact numbers, but if we got 19 million the first year we get a set amount. The second year, third year, fourth and fifth year again, three A is the valid attempt to equalize and to reach a 75% funding funding rate over the five years. What can parents, teachers and students do to show their support for you? It's very important that we still keep up the telephone calls, keep up the letter writing campaign, send postcards, drop a line, say anything to say we must have three a. I found your show aired Sunday, February 5th, 1984, concerning the black unemployed teenager teen viewpoint.
