Right now, the State Insurance Commission's investigation into administrative charges against Delegate Frank Conway is over. I will. Sanders has more on the story. The commission charges Conaway with mishandling around $200,000 in insurance premiums. The commission investigation ended, though, when Conaway turned in his insurance license. Frank Conaway, state delegate for eight years, a native Baltimore Ian, who has been under investigation by the state Insurance Commission for over two years. Tonight, most of that heat is over. By virtue of Conaway voluntarily turning in his insurance licenses. The reasons that I'm leaving the business is because the businesses have been sold and I do not have the kind of time to do the administrative work required. And I'd rather spend my time in public life and in business like today of the Day. The insurance commission was set to begin hearings into charges that Conaway mishandled close to $200,000 in policyholders money, money that was never received by various insurance carriers. The delegate and a partner, G. Leo Hunt, turned in their licenses to sell insurance in the state. I think with the facts that were presented in the news media were premiums moneys that were not turned over. However, there was no investigation to see or try to see if there were premiums. I had not collected from a client. And I think when the ultimate answers come in, you'll find that there will be an offset. The insurance commission is backing away at this point. Cannot Mr. Conaway simply go down to Washington and apply for a license? They know, if you will notice, we did not dismiss the charges that we had pending against Mr. Conaway and Mr. Hunt. These charges have been placed on a stet docket and are continuing if he should ever apply for a license.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136040/file/252384#t=23.97,134.85"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136040/file/252384/transcript/70801/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Conaway refused to name the people who bought his two agencies at the West Belvidere office of Conaway, Inc. No, I do not. Not on his payroll. I'm the no, I'm the sole owner of this goodness. Okay. The problem lies in my name. So this office is open has been since Thursday. Again, the timing of all of this leaves open the question of considering the delegate stand that he did nothing criminally wrong, why he sold his businesses and then turned in his license as an insurance agent. Conway does admit that his agency did violate some state insurance regulations, not willfully. There might have been some mismanagement. As you know, I'm away from my business quite a bit and could not be there to handle the administrative end. And some former employees of scale that with some of the funds, Frank Conaway in an election year could face yet another investigation. This by the city state's attorney for his dealings with the Maryland Auto Insurance Fund. So far, we've been unable to reach the city state's attorney for comment on the investigation. At least six people were killed and 15 injured after a group of men sprayed automatic gunfire into a crowd of people in a Jewish neighborhood. It is the fourth such attack in Paris in a week. All of those by a group protesting the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. There has been a new development in the Uri Bella link of hunger strike. And the night we know the secret which Elina Bella Link cops desperately trying to keep from her husband in Moscow. Don Scott reports. The secret is that Elena lied to her husband, telling him the Soviets had decided to let him go when in fact, they have not. You can call it a lie. You can call it an extrapolation. You can call it anything you want, Don. The bottom line is it's true. There is no promise from the obvious. Okay. But it is also true that, like, for just four years, if you believed ski to have been denied for state considerations when he went off fast, two weeks later, he was given immigration papers. A new blast tonight directed at City Council President Walter Wolinsky. Maryland's U.S. attorney, Fred Martz says tape recorded conversations show that Alinsky was definitely involved in a corrupt relationship with a sludge hauling company. Or Alinsky is currently under federal indictment in connection with that alleged involvement. Alinsky will be presiding tonight over the regular session of the city council as a couple of tough issues are expected to be presented. Bob Sokolow is standing by now with a live instant eye report from city hall. Bob, a number of things happening down here at city council. Let me go over a couple of them. First of all, just a short while ago, the city council adopted this resolution, which in effect, steps them into the international scene. It asked Soviet President Leonard Brezhnev to allow Yuri Lankov to immigrate to the United States. And this will be passed on to the Soviet Union and then, of course, forwarded to Leonard. Now, that being done just a short time ago, also in response to Albert, the story you mentioned just a short time ago where Maryland U.S. Attorney Fred Moss was saying the tape recordings of conversations are showing unequivocally that Walter Lewinski is involved with a relationship with a sludge hauling company. I talked to Walter Wolinsky just before the council began to try to talk to him, and this was his response. Well, any reaction to that? Nothing at all. Apparently did not want to talk at all anyway. And it's also believed that the video game bill will be brought back tonight to the council for an added amendment to include a 1% gross receipts tax asked for by the mayor. You may remember him asking for that. But Councilman Kim Murphy is totally opposed to that amendment. The import of this tax will fall with inordinate weight and unfairness on the marginal businessmen, on the small businessmen. It's just not fair. That's essentially what's happening with this bill. And also happening tonight, the stadium bill was brought back to committee and effectively killed this evening, which means that the starting time for games will remain the same. Gerry Albert, that just happening a short time ago. The stadium bill sent back to committee, effectively killing that bill. All right. Well, that that was perhaps why I think one of the toughest that they had to face this time around. Absolutely. Well, that has always been tough and probably no surprise, really. Right. And as they had been, we talked about many times before, and there was clergy here again tonight overseeing, watching what was happening. And again, they left after the bill was killed. It provides jobs for 125 handicapped people. These workers, for example, are busy putting together containers for chemical kids as part of a contract with the Bendix Corporation. This morning another Bendix project, however, was idle. This contract is for the construction of gas detectors. But after constructing these gas alarms for five years for the Bendix Corporation, the League for the Handicapped is now in danger of losing that contract. That kind of slowdown in getting contracts led to funding problems for another service. This nonprofit rehabilitation Center for the handicapped provides a swimming pool. It's empty now, but it's used for therapy and recreation because of the therapeutic uses. It must be kept at a toasty and expensive 85 to 90 degrees. And there are other costs. We have motor costs to run the to run the pumps and so forth. We have to have a lifeguard on hand full time so that there's about a $24,000 a year cost for heating it. In addition to that, we have about another $16,000. That makes it a $40,000 a year bill. So the league is looking for new pool memberships because a last minute reprieve from the board of directors is keeping the pool open for one year. But unless additional funding is found, that subject to change, the senior groups, which are run by Baltimore City and Baltimore County and I imagine will be looking at all senior groups because if you have a little arthritis or something, jumping into a 90 degree pool is is just tremendous. Sometimes it takes several to get through a game. Twice that many to get through a doubleheader. And Tuesday, September 14th, there's a big doubleheader here with the Yankees. But Tuesday, September 14th, is also Election Day. So at least for the first game, there's not going to be any beer at the stadium. Unfortunately, the way the state law is, alcoholic beverages cannot be sold in the city of Baltimore except in bonafide restaurants on Election Day. No beer in the stadium except in the hit and run run, which holds a class B beer. Went to a bonafide restaurant with two at the stands and in the refreshment stands there can be no alcoholic beverage suspense until the polls close at 8:00. Nothing can be done to change this. So I'm just waiting for the script and that'll be really fun because we going to play grown ups this time. That's a big go to wait for that. Well, I watched them rehearsing this afternoon.
