This is Eyewitness News at five. He was about to enter his senior year at North Carroll High School. Now he's charged with murdering his mother. Good evening, everyone. I'm Sally Thorne, or 57 year old Jean Fick was found dead at her Hampstead home early this morning. And just a few blocks away, police found her son. Ron Mattes reports the 17 year old was arrested after a struggle with officers and charged with the slaying. Quiet neighborhood? No. Very few if any problems. But early this morning, that quiet was shattered. Maryland State Police were called to farm Woods Lane in Hampstead, where they found Jean Fick dead of multiple stab wounds. Police at the scene recovered a knife. We don't know for certain that that is the murder weapon. It will be sent to state police crime lab for analysis. 17 year old Timothy Fick was arrested about a mile from his home. He's charged as an adult with first degree murder in his mother's death. It's alleged he used a kitchen knife to stab her numerous times in the upper body. Neighbors say this is a typically quiet suburban neighborhood here in Carroll County. And they can't believe that someone was murdered in their own backyard. I was shocked, very shocked. I to think something like that would happen right across the street was unbelievable. Neighbors say Jean Fick, her son Tim and her 15 year old daughter kept mostly to themselves, but sometimes they would hear Mrs. Fick arguing with her son. You would hear him quarrel every once in a while, but other than that, we didn't really know him. And as an eerie stillness settled over the neighborhood today. He explained that after hearing that tale, the three fled to Florida in the victim's car. The jury has already heard Sarah Citroen's taped confession, in which she admits she helped Jason stab the two victims. She got to the kitchen and he attacked her. And then so her boyfriend went to attack Jason, and I couldn't let him do it, so I had to get it. What did you hear? I just tried to kick it off with Jason. Look at the. The prosecution rested its case on Monday. Defense lawyers plan to call Jason Dylan's father to the stand, testify that the boy was abused since he was a child. DeLong has pleaded not criminally responsible. What drives a child to kill a parent? It's a tough question. Kelly Saunders went looking for the answer and is here with the story. Kelly. Well, there are three main reasons why children kill their parents that, according to Doctor Jim McGee of Sheppard Pratt. And the first one is the family gathering where drinking occurs. There's a quarrel, the gun comes out, a parent gets murdered to a home with a child who has severe chronic mental illness, perhaps hears voices that tell the child to murder mom and dad.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136382/file/252968#t=248.56,357.95"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136382/file/252968/transcript/71332/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But most of the recent cases seem to come under the third reason that kids kill their parents. The kind of situations we've been seeing recently calling a third category. And that's where apparently there has been some long history of abuse in the family, where the child has been physically abused, sexually abused or whatever. And then, in adolescence or young adulthood, in a sense, the child retaliates by murdering the parent. Are you telling Lyle what my dad had been molested? Me. The Menendez brothers, who are accused in the shotgun murders of their parents, claimed their father sexually abused them for years. Did you ask him not to? Yes. Lisa Friedell is the 16 year old Denton, Maryland, girl accused of killing her mother and stepfather with a 357 Magnum last April. Lisa has made no statements, but her friend Kelly has. She claims she did it after years of physical and sexual abuse. I'd like to get some of the sentencing for some of the crimes against children made much stiffer. Doctor McGee says there are warning signals, but usually the family is so dysfunctional no one recognizes them, so they don't get help. And he feels these murders are on the rise. Parenting skills in a lot of families have really deteriorated. There are a lot of parents that simply don't have a clue. He actually feels that there should be restrictions on who should be able to be a parent. But he says, of course there won't ever be. No, it sounds a little bit like doctor McGee is actually blaming the victims in this case and all the examples of your story. The parents in in this instance under this number three, he is. But unfortunately, everybody's a victim when when the family is that dysfunctional. Thanks, Kelly. The Cecil County teenager accused of killing her eight year old charge will be tried as a juvenile. Jennifer Woodman was found shot to death in her Elkton home in June, a shotgun at her side. A judge has ruled her 16 year old babysitter should not be tried as an adult. CNN's Ed Garston has more. Bob Zub remembers the last time he heard from his 22 year old sister, Patti. Her last hurrah before starting school this fall was a trip to the Smoky Mountains. The day she arrived that evening, she called. Talk to my mother and said she was having a wonderful, fantastic time. But then on August 18th, that wonderful time ended when Patty died in a traffic accident. An accident which tour of the failing heart of her father and gave him a new one. Patty had expressed her wishes to donate her organs through organ, donor card and verbally with the family at the time. We had no idea the donation of Patty's heart to our father was even a possibility. I want to stress that. We learned from the Tennessee donor services that it might be. A father had been waiting for a heart for up to four years amid the wrenching grief. Chester Zubir accepted his daughter's heart. His quote was it would be a joy to have Patti's heart. A surgical team from William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, close to the Zuber Berkeley, Michigan, home, flew to the University of Tennessee Knoxville Medical Center. They harvested Patty's heart, quickly returned to Beaumont, and transplanted it into her father. Medically, he was making uneventful recovery, nothing unusual or for a routine post-operative course. A national organization that tracks transplant says this may be the first heart transplant of its kind. Doctor Altschuler says there's no scientific evidence to suggest that receiving an organ from a family member decreases the chance of rejection. A biopsy will be taken from his heart next week to see how his body is accepting it, and his son says he knows Patty's heart is now in the right place.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136382/file/252968#t=1232.53,1348.92"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136382/file/252968/transcript/71332/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I'd like you all to know right now. A bacteria pass from mother to baby during childbirth tops tonight's Healthwatch. It's called Group B strep, and it's the leading cause of blood infection, pneumonia and meningitis in newborns. The bacteria affects 5 to 40% of all healthy women and can be fatal in newborns. Mothers who have premature labor and carry large amounts of bacteria are at highest risk. Researchers are working on a vaccine. Also in Healthwatch, a surgery breakthrough in England could lengthen the lives of patients with heart problems. This heart pump is being surgically connected to the stomach of 12 heart patients, and takes over the pumping function needed for circulation. In the past, these pumps have been used on patients prior to transplant operations. Doctors hope this new technique will lessen the need for heart transplants. Police have already recovered a knife believed to be the murder weapon. The $30 billion crime bill, passed by the U.S. Senate last night, could mean up to 2000 new police officers on the streets and highways of Maryland. State and local law enforcement officials also say the crime bill will help pay for more prison cells. Since June, muralist William Cochran has been wheeling his paint card to Fredericks new Carroll Creek Bridge. He's been transforming it's concrete to stone, and the illusion is remarkable. You'd have to touch it to realize that it's paint. It pulls the eye, but the result is pleasing indeed. The inscription on the bridge appears to have been chiseled, but it's not. It, too, is William Cochran's work. The project is co-funded by the City of Frederick and Shared Vision, a community group spearheading the idea and involved in raising $100,000 to complete the bridge transformation. The bridge is to be the centerpiece of a linear park along the creek and a symbol of community spirit. It's really the project of a lifetime for me, not just because of its scale and and its scope, but also because a bridge is a powerful symbol for community. It takes separate pieces of land and creates common ground. And I hope that this project can can work that way with the community. This bridge is going to be a class A work of art. The detail is absolutely incredible. This gate looks like a gate doesn't feel like a gate because it isn't. It's painted, but some people actually have thought it is real. One gentleman came up and told me that the previous evening he had tried to open the gate, and he didn't know that it was a mural, and he thought the city had installed a gate here, and he tried to open it. We've had some very strong storms overnight last night. They came in from Pennsylvania. If you take a look at local radar, some showers and storms west of Washington right now in northern Virginia, northwest of Baltimore. Right now, it looks like the movement of these storms will take them south of Baltimore and not really bother as too much. So for the most part, just a hazy, rather humid night. The best chance of showers least. Looking at the current radar is to our south and southwest, especially south of Washington in Northern Virginia, so we may be quiet tonight. Just kind of a humid day. Bigger storms. Also in southern Virginia, where last night's storm, some areas got an inch and a half of rain in less than an hour at the airport. There are also some showers and storms developing out over Ohio and the Ohio Valley, Illinois. That area that's moving in our direction ahead of a weak frontal boundary that will probably kick up some storms here tomorrow. It's high and dry for the time being. Cloud cover. Take a look. Just to our west. You see some clouds moving in overnight. There are the showers, they dissipate. And that was my attitude. Tom Callahan and his wife hold on to that and each other. Even as his cancer treatments continue, lives filled not only with doctors now, but lawyers. A family in Michigan is learning firsthand how a death can give life. Chester Zoo his daughter Patty, was killed in a traffic accident while vacationing in Tennessee last week in Michigan. Her father was in desperate need of a heart transplant. Patty wanted to be an organ donor, so nearly six hours after her heart stopped in Tennessee, it was beating again in her father's chest in Michigan at the time. We had no idea the donation of Patty's heart to our father was even a possibility. I want to stress that. We learned from the Tennessee donor services that it might be. But just a few days ago, the city's Forest Park Municipal Golf Course was the scene of a frightening robbery. Tonight, golfers tell Melissa Sander they are not letting that incident scare them away. Making par. That's what's on the minds of these golfers. But robbery is not something you think about your own on the golf course. That's what happened Wednesday afternoon at Forest Park. Sixth hole. Two teens, masked with bandanas, stepped out of the woods and held up a golfer at gunpoint. They stole his wallet, took money from his partner's golf bag, and fortunately, no one was hurt when one teen fired his rifle at a nearby golfer who shouted at them. The robbers escaped through the woods and into the adjacent neighborhood. It's not a first time incident here in 25 years, I can only remember 4 or 5. You can't go anyway. Well, anyway, the CFL is also doing well off of this strike. Drawing well over on 33rd Street and eight games deep. Now to the Canadian Football League season, the Charm City CFL ers are facing their first semi crucial contest of the season as they head up to Hamilton to take on the Tiger-Cats. At this point, 8% of this season of 94 has been lost to the work stoppage. And recognizing that there is no reason to think that things are going to break any time soon, the chief executive officer of the Boston Red Sox today proposed that if the dispute can somehow get settled, perhaps by the middle of October, that maybe the owners might want to think about having a World Series in November at a neutral site, the suggestion was not, we are told, warmly received. And with that, it is now time to check in on the updated numbers on our Eyewitness Sports Strike scoreboard. Yes. Ladies and gentlemen, this is day number 15. So far, 195 total Major League Baseball games have been lost. And the players, by virtue of their walkout, have forfeited 66 million American dollars in salary. And here we are on another Friday night without the booster. Normally, we'd be down at the ball yard wrapping with the big fella, but with the strike still on, we are here. The only problem with being up here is that I don't feel like working, I really don't, I just feel like going and sitting down somewhere and getting my racing form and sitting underneath the shade of the tree out here and enjoying myself like everybody else. All right, so that's the booster up there working hard for the money on as, the baseball strike of 1994, now 15 days old US open tennis championships get cranked up on Monday in New York. The big pre-tournament story this year, who is not at the tournament? On the men's side, defending champion Pete Sampras is injured. He says he will try to play on the women's side. No. Monica Seles, once the dominant player in her game, she's still not ready to come back from that stabbing incident 18 months ago in Germany. No Jennifer Capriati this year. She's trying to overcome a drug habit. Those are two of the biggest draws that the women's game used to have. Losing them isn't good. I think it has been a little bit of a little bit of a problem for women's tennis. You know, but with that, what happens every time is somebody fills the void. And Mary Pierce came along at the French Open and became a huge star, beating Steffi Graf in the semis. And there was so much publicity surrounding that. And for Katie Martinez to win Wimbledon, there was a lot of publicity surrounding that because especially she beat Martina in the finals.
