I have been associated with the Catholic Church for approximately 40, 45 years. But for the very first time, the liturgy is extremely meaning to me. more important than the theology I'm concerned with, and most appreciative of the fact that it mobilized the black community. There's a movement going on. We're witnessing a phenomenon that I think is gonna have a far-reaching impact within the black community, and I see nothing positive things resulting from it. I think, however, that the media would be remiss if they saw this as a conflict within the black church that is not it at all. I think what is happening is that Catholicism... extending even to the Vatican, must come to grips with the needs of the black community, of all ethnic groups, not just the black community. The same thing holds true with the Hispanic community. And until such time as any body embraces the concerns of all, then to that same extent are you going to find the support for that organization diminishing. And this is what I think is happening here. I'm extremely encouraged by what I see happening with Father Starling's effort. This is not to suggest that I am not completely enamored with Father East over at the church that Stallings left. He too is doing an excellent job. It's interesting to me though that whenever any idea is conceived by blacks, for blacks, in the interest of blacks, then the white power structure seems to have problems with that. It's very good to be a part of a body, a collective body that's embracing all of the concepts and precepts, but I'm not locked into that. I'm not locked into that at all.
