The man's are among the passengers and crew who died in the crash of Swissair Flight 111 and all 229 people on board the ill fated plane. 137 of them were Americans. The Swissair flight took off last night from Kennedy Airport in New York, bound for Geneva. About an hour later, the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit, dumped tons of fuel and was preparing for an emergency landing before the jetliner crashed into the ocean off Nova Scotia. Minutes before the crash, the passengers had been told to put on their life jackets and prepare for an emergency landing, but no one survived the crash. Investigators say there is no sign of terrorism being involved in the crash. Instead, they're focusing on mechanical trouble or pilot error. We begin our team coverage now with CBS reporter Manuel Gallegos in New York. We're told that family members from passengers of Flight 111 have been coming to Kennedy Airport throughout the day. Swissair is offering to take anyone who wants to go to Nova Scotia. As for the wreckage, it is extensive and there are few answers. The mood is grim off Canada's Atlantic coast as more than a thousand people are helping to search for bodies and for wreckage from Swissair Flight 111. Debris is scattered across six miles. So far, 36 bodies have been recovered. The personal items found in the water show the reality. The 229 passengers and crew were killed, not more. The personal effects of the passengers are starting to come to the surface. Kids toys, purses, hats, shoes. We didn't see that last night. 137 of the passengers on the New York to Geneva flight are believed to be American. 30 were French, 28 Swiss. Among the dead, Dr. Jonathan Mann, a renowned Aids researcher and his wife. Also, several United Nations workers. These include United Nations staff who worked for the welfare of children, the care of refugees, a cure for HIV Aids, and the protection of the world's intellectual property. There is still no official information as to what went wrong. The seven year old MD 11 plane was about two hours from New York when it plunged into the ocean just several miles short of an emergency landing in Halifax. Pilots had reported smoke in the cabin. Sadly, this tragedy strikes right here in the heart of Baltimore. There were several local people on board the jet when it crashed off the coast of Canada last night, including a husband and wife team who taught and did Aids research at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Team coverage reporter Dennis Edwards is live from Johns Hopkins as the medical community begins to mourn Dennis. That's right, Kai. The Johns Hopkins research community says the world suffered a major loss with the deaths of doctors Jonathan Mann and Mary Lou Clement. Mann. Both were major players in the search to find effective treatment and vaccine to fight the Aids virus. We we're going to miss their leadership. These were the top leaders. Mary Lou, for the vaccine research. Jonathan for his overall public health leadership, friends in the Johns Hopkins medical community call them the ultimate power couple. He actually developed it and built it and directed it for a period of two years. Dr. Mary Lou Clement Mann was a researcher and teacher in the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. She focused her attention on developing vaccines for infectious diseases. Highest on that list was Aids. Was actively working at an international national level and developing vaccines and testing those vaccines, in particular for HIV and Aids. And this would have major implications for the health of the entire world. She was involved in all of the new vaccines that were being developed. There's some now 20 to 30 vaccines that have been tried against the HIV virus. And she was instrumental in probably half of those. The loss of Jonathan and Mary Lou is also tragic on a more personal level. They are dead and spell the end of a tender and touching love story that started just a few years ago. The man's met back in the 80s, but married only two years ago. It was the second marriage for both. Jonathan left the post at Harvard and became a visiting professor at Hopkins just to be with Mary Lou. The tragedy that has just unfolded is is even more devastating, knowing that how close they were, how much they loved each other and how much they meant to the whole community. And now they're gone. Now there is no way to tell exactly what effect the loss of both doctors will have on Aids research. The colleagues tell us somebody will take their place, but it'll be hard to find someone with the same kind of depth and experience. Six month olds, Ian Denny and Matthew Harrison were taking a nap in Russell's home when they died of suffocation. Both boys were covered with a quilt when they died. Homeowners in a new Howard County development are very worried about a gas problem in their neighborhood that could cause explosions. Suzanne Collins is live in Elkridge with a story that broke last night and continues to develop Suzanne. Well, Sally, many homes in this area were tested by the fire department today for what they're saying could be methane gas. It all began after yesterday. Three of the homes, including the one behind me, were condemned for having a high level of this gas. And it's been learned that after someone first smelled it, these houses may have been built on a landfill. They're not sure of the exact connection, but it's possible that the decaying matter underground might be causing the gas to come up and like an unseen horror, seep through the cracks of their basements. We moved here three months ago. Just got our kids registered and brand new schools. You know, all all of the work with moving and now just the thought of this. This was our dream home. We need to gather the facts. But one of my greatest concerns right now is certainly this was never disclosed to us and the purchasing process. And I did go through the contract of that home last night, all of our paperwork. And no place is there a reference that the home was built on top of a landfill. According to those who've been around the area for years, a private landfill was operated by the O'Connor family on the site where as many as ten or more homes have been built. It's my understanding that while it was a landfill, that most anything was accepted in it, but I can't verify that. That's just, again, hearsay and all that decaying matter underground creates this dangerous methane gas when it's trapped in a basement. Yes, the breakdown of organic matter creates methane gas. Many people called the fire department today and also ask to be tested for gas. Realizing that the three condemned homes may not be the only ones ultimately affected as houses settle and as cracks appear. Neighbors organized. They talked about falling property values, repairs and lawsuits. But most of all about safety. My daughter wanted to leave last night. She was afraid that we were going to blow up. CBS reporter Mari Maher is in Panama City with the latest. The Curious came out today to see the damage from Hurricane Earl. The high waters were suitable for some, but hard to negotiate for others. The storm came ashore early this morning near Panama City. Most of Florida's panhandle was evacuated in advance of the storm, but with minimal hurricane winds. Some chose to ride it out, trying to stay in like they told us. But our daughter Kristen wouldn't leave me. She said we had to go out and see it. Late this morning, the winds had calmed down along Panama City, where just yesterday it was battered. Residents here are breathing easier now that Mother Nature's fury has moved on. It could take days before floodwaters from Hurricane Earl's heavy rains recede. But Florida's governor, Lawton Chiles, has already declared the area a disaster, and that should help to accelerate some of the cleanup efforts. Maureen Maher, CBS News, Panama City. And a lot of eastern North Carolina getting showers and storms. Maryland right here, you see these clouds there, high clouds and precipitation. Does it starting to get down to North Carolina? This thing is moving, pushed out to the east. We've got a cold front, kind of a weak frontal boundary and high pressure with dry air in the upper levels. We've got a northwest flow which will keep the moisture south of the Baltimore area. It has winds now around 40 miles an hour. Earl does it's already cleared out all along the coast, bright and sunny, as you saw in our live report. More thunderstorms across Florida tonight. Some big stuff around Orlando as kind of a trailing end of this system. High pressure will move in. Keep Earl to our south. It will rain, I think, in Ocean City tonight. Already some showers near Salisbury and along the southeastern sections of Virginia, Virginia Beach, Norfolk area, probably into tomorrow. And it could get quite windy in Ocean City, 30, 40 mile an hour winds are likely. And then they'll start drying out. And for the weekend, we're looking for high pressure to move in. Also in Health Watch, about 80% of women have an ultrasound during pregnancy to make sure that everything's going all right. But with a traditional two dimensional scan, it's often hard to tell what you're seeing. Now, new technology is changing that. You can see baby in D. Baby Rachel Rosella already has a pretty good idea of what her baby looks like, how he has No, my eyes, my lips, his hair. What she's absolutely sure of is her baby's health. Originally, Rachel and her husband had abnormal test results, but 3D ultrasound cleared up the questions. The baby is fine, but look at those ribs. Isn't that a fantastic. Like traditional ultrasound, doctors take pictures of the moving fetus, but the new technology lets them freeze the image into a 3D plane. The details are much clearer, allowing doctors like Delores Pretorius to spot problems faster and easier. That just makes it much more comprehensive and much more recognizable, both for the physician as well as for the patient. See, there is the forehead and the nose and the chin. Right now, doctors use 3-D ultrasound for high risk pregnancies like Rachel's, but it can also assist with infertility and prostate problems, biopsies and more. Jonathan, for his overall public health leadership, friends in the Johns Hopkins medical community call them the ultimate power couple. Dr. Jonathan Mann was an international pioneer in the fight against Aids. He was the former Harvard professor who made his contribution by advocating effective health care for people in underdeveloped countries. Led the very first World Health Organization program on Aids. He actually developed it and built it and directed it for a period of two years. Dr. Mary Lou Clements, man, was a researcher and teacher at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. It is a major loss, but there's no way to tell right now exactly what effect it will have on Aids research. Colleagues or their colleagues here at the university tell us it's going to be difficult to replace them, to find somebody who has that kind of background and that kind of depth of knowledge. Dennis. Also, you would need in the case of methane gas or an explosive gas to get an explosion proof sump pump. You need to seal that some pump off and vent the gases outside your house to get an explosion proof event fan and two methane detectors in the basement, as well as an additional one on every for that so that if you're sleeping at night and the levels get high, you could get out of the house. Baltimore Public School kids average 815 more than 200 points below the average for the rest of the state and the whole country. It's a heartache because it's one more reminder of the depths into which the schools have sunk over the last quarter century, and also because the kids who take the SATs to begin with are the kids with hope, the kids who want to go to college, who have shown some promise in the classroom.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136713/file/253424#t=4701.86,4793.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136713/file/253424/transcript/71557/annotation/47","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They and their parents have invested in the American dream that if you study hard, you can go to college and the education you get there is a ticket to the good life. Earl has top winds and some squalls 40 miles an hour. Some of those thunderstorms could have some stronger gusts. When you say that they've chosen to receive it, you mean they've chosen to try and run the ball to get a touchdown? Exactly right. Let's go Where they start. The ball is normally placed on the 30 and it's kicked off. That team kicks the ball this way, so he kicks it towards his goalpost. Yep. Yep, exactly. Okay. And then all of the Ravens try and get the ball. No, no, no. We only have two guys. The other nine guys have an assignment to go block one of the Steelers. So one of those two guys is trying to run and find where that ball that's been kicked, where it is and catch it. Yeah. And now his job is to run there. There you go. He can either turn and hand it off to one out running backs and the other ten guys a block for him.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136713/file/253424#t=5732.84,5817.62"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136713/file/253424/transcript/71557/annotation/57","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Or the quarterback can take a drop and throw it right to one of our receivers. Right. He has a choice. That's called the play. I'm already confused. All right. As it is not, however, is not confusing. He was very clear. He was very good natured about doing this. And I want to thank you very much. Okay. So now we're going to recap. This again, is for people like me who honestly knew nothing about football. Here's recapping what we learned. Okay. The game starts. You know, this the game, you know it's the lesson. Then I'm going toss the winner of the coin toss gets the choice to kick or to receive. Who keeps the coin? The referee? I don't know. The smart team, of course, will receive the ball because that means they have the ball first. They get to try and get a touchdown first. 11 players on each team on the field. If we have the ball to receive the kick, the other nine, although they don't receive it, they have to block the other team. They're going to block right. The center begins. Every play I always thought was a quarterback, but the center does it by snapping. That's a baseball football term, snapping the ball to the quarterback. Wouldn't that break it? I don't know what the quarterback gets the ball. He can hand off the ball to a running back or he can throw the ball to one of his receivers. He can either hand it or pass it. So, okay, if you want to review what we're learning, you can send it for our free football. Yes, we do have a football one on one brochure. You know, McCorkle infomercial aired in just about every state in the country, promising millions could be made in real estate investments. The US attorney in Florida now says he's a crook. It certainly looked like William McGonagall was rolling in money. His infomercial showed him in his place on his boat and riding in his Rolls-Royce. But Florida prosecutors have a different view. Preliminary investigation has indicated that his claims that he's a multimillionaire and that he owns a jet and he owns a boat and he has this fabulous lifestyle.
