Hello, everybody. I'm Sally Thornton. And I'm Guy Jackson. Here's what people are talking about tonight. A gruesome discovery that'll break your hearts. Dead dogs dumped in the woods near Elkridge. It's a story you'll only see here on Eyewitness News. A foul odor makes nearby workers sick, and they want answers. So why would this news investigates? And what Kathy Fowler found will also make you sick, Kathy? Well, Sally, many of you will spend hundreds of dollars to bury your pet at a cemetery. But the dead dogs Eyewitness News found behind the pet cemetery in Howard County weren't buried. They were rotting in the woods. One more knew that some of this video is disturbing. Got. Cover your nose. It stinks so bad. For almost a month now, Paul's been smelling a disgusting odor while working on tractor trailers in Elkridge. The odor was coming from the woods behind him. It got so bad, Paul and his coworkers decided to investigate. You could see. See some of the skull and stuff laying there. And then there is two. There was two little dogs in a bag. What they found was shocking. And then a pile of what appeared to be dead dogs. Sam, you could see the maggots there. We can't show you the graphic pictures of the pile of dead animals here because it's too disgusting. But from where I stand, I can count. One, two, three, four. At least half a dozen carcasses, some in garbage bags, others just lying in the woods rotting. Another thing are eyewitness news cameras can't show you. Is this smell that any yet? Some people might conclude that since this is a pet cemetery, that you guys dumped the dogs back there. Well, I don't see why we would do it, since it would create a lot of problems for us and it would create a bad smell back there. The manager of Rosa Bonner Pet Cemetery denies they dumped the animals there and she says she doesn't know who did. These nearby employees just hope they get rid of them soon so they can breathe fresh air again. The Howard County Health Department is investigating to find out who dumped the animals. But since the dump site is on cemetery property, the health Department says the cemetery must clean it up in seven days. So any idea how those dogs died, Kathy? Well, we hope they died of natural causes, but the health department is investigating that, too, to find out for sure. Okay. Thanks, Kathy. A week after her disappearance from her Elkridge home, her body turned up in the woods. Then, broken mannequins one dangling from a tree were found near the home. There wasn't a suspect in the mannequin murder until an arrest yesterday. The feeling of relief. Yet at the same time, it brings back memories and it makes it hard to have it brought to mind. Vernon Clark was transported this morning from prison to face charges in Davis's death. It's believed Clark with this gardener. But everybody said they couldn't imagine why she was killed, because she would have given anybody anything they wanted. Police pulled out the old evidence and ran it through new DNA tests coming up with Clark. Well, it's very wonderful, of course. Too bad it wasn't in place after Darlie got killed. Sanders tells us some of those really suffering ill effects are car wash owners forced to close down their businesses, all thanks to Mother Nature and Governor Glendinning. But send us to the unemployment line. Two days ago, business came to an abrupt halt at Jay's car wash here on North Avenue. This is my livelihood. I don't know how to do this, but a policeman gave owner Jay Williams a verbal warning to stop operating his car wash. Then the officer later returned while business continued. That's when he issued a tougher warning. If you set the water off or pay a fine of $1,000. Governor Glendening has allowed car washes that recycle 50% of their water to remain open. Those that don't must close. If you're going to shut one car, wash down, shut them all down. For now, Williams says he's angry and worried about bills. You know, bills, you know, no one has a tough law on child support. A lot of my guys pay child support, including myself. We can't support. Eyewitness News First one and continues to monitor water usage throughout our water watch. If you live in the city, Baltimore County, Atlanta or Carroll County, here is how we are doing. Typical water usage for our area is 240 million gallons of water per day. Yesterday, we used over 257 million gallons. A year ago today, we used over 316 million gallons of water. But right now, most folks apparently are trying to help. The day before the drought restrictions, we used 342 million gallons of water. And yesterday it was all the way down to 257 million gallons, a savings of nearly 100 million gallons. So Eyewitness News has been showing you Maryland isn't the only state facing the sacrifices in the wake of the drought. Now, in fact, for Maryland and three other states, this is the worst drought ever recorded. Today, President Clinton spoke about that, saying it's the worst drought since the Dust Bowl. He also asked Congress for a quick response. We've worked hard to help the victims of the drought and the heat wave. But as weather disruptions become even more common and they will they will demand a more coordinated response by the national government. The president says he's assembling a task force to deal with the problem. And in the meantime, the Senate just approved more than $7 billion in farm aid. But doctors offering Patricia new hope with an experimental treatment. It uses the virus that causes the common cold. This is a virus that can kill, basically give the cancer a cold and kill cancer cells, but leave the normal cells alone. Cancer cells are essentially normal cells with an alteration. In this case, the gene p53 is missing. This altered manmade version of the cold virus only goes after cells missing p53. Doctors inject the virus with an endoscope which has an ultrasound machine on the tip. It goes down Patricia's throat and into her stomach, giving doctors a clear view of her tumor. So we're actually injecting through the wall of the stomach directly into the tumor, and we can actually target it very precisely. And then if the virus escapes outside the pancreas, it can cause flu like symptoms. The only side effects, Patricia may feel are flu. Like it's not a cure, but it can prolong my life and give me a better quality of life because I should have less pain. A vacation cruise for members of Britain's royal family could turn out to be a stormy voyage. For the first time, Prince Charles has taken his longtime lover on a trip with his sons, William and Harry. The royal vacation had a rocky start when the British press found out the happy scenes of the princes and their guests departing for a mediterranean cruise camouflaged another getaway held in secret from a British Air Force base. So let's get right to it. You got a big pork shoulder sitting here. So for all of you novices out there, they want to get into it. How do you do it, man? How do you marinate? Go ahead and take it away, Robert. Basically, what you need to do is find a nice lean pork shoulder, not too much fat on it. Once you get it, you add your special seasonings and sauces. Now, are you willing to give away the ingredients and that seasoning? Man? Well, it's just a little white garlic powder, some tarragon sauce and a few other family trees that come in just marinated down real good. Let it cook in the oven. 202 25, 45 minutes per pound that you do. And you do suggest that you don't cut the fat out, right? No, the fat actually will keep the meat tender and keep it together because after the finished product comes off of the grill or in the oven, you just start to separate it with your hands. Okay. So do your thing there. Just marinate that bad boy all the way over, rub it down the slap it around, flip it over. Yeah, he will. Fine. Get it in there. I mean, you don't have to put any lemon juices or nothing like that. It's all in the spices, all in this place. You just want to keep it pretty much as it is. Okay. And you just throw it on the grill meat side first because the actual fat and then the top help based on the top of it and he produces. And so one more time on the temperature. Well, how much water are we using? Eyewitness News First warning weather continues to monitor the numbers through our water watch. If you live in the city, Baltimore County and are under or Carol counties, here's how we're doing. Typical water usage for our area is 240 million gallons of water per day. Yesterday, we use more than that, over 257 million gallons. But a year ago today, we used over 316 million gallons of water. And the effort you're making to save water is not going unnoticed the day before the drought restrictions. We use 342 million gallons of water. Yesterday was all the way down to two, 57 million gallons. And that is, as you can imagine, a savings of nearly a hundred million gallons. And that's significant. President Clinton is aware of the water problem as well. Today, he announced he's forming a task force to deal with the drought emergency in the northeast, which is the century's worst. We've only had a trace of rain officially this month. Take a look. Some other numbers for August. In the past now, we've only had a trace that occurred on the first. The city actually hit 1800 Saturday. A little thundershowers moved through their normal rainfall for the month, for the entire month is just a little under four inches. But look at this. Back in 1955, we had 18.35in of rain. And the least amount of rainfall we had was but 60 607 inch. That occurred about 1984. No, it was 1977, I think it was. So we had quite a range during this month of August. The big range due to tropical storms and hurricanes which have gone through the region and really dumped those tropical rains. And that's what we need to break this drought to get out of this. And we are in the hurricane, tropical storm season. A Parksville woman was on her way home from work early this morning when something unbelievable happened to her. She was shot while in her car driving along the Beltway at 695 and Interstate 70. Guy Jackson has the frightening details. It started like any other night for a Reisterstown woman. She left work, got in her car and headed for home. Now, the driver did not look over to see what the actions were of this other vehicle. There are things she remembers that she hears too loud noises and felt a pain in her lower leg. The loud noises turned out to be gunshots that passed through the driver's side door of Charlene Clark's 1997 red Honda Civic. The sting in her leg, wounds from two bullets from a vehicle that started following her soon after she got onto Isaacs, 95. Baltimore County police say the suspect's vehicle sped off toward I-70 after someone inside fired the shots. The victim was able to pull off on the shoulder. 695 realized that she was injured, waved your arms out of the window, hoping that somebody would stop and pull over, which they did. They then called 911. Police are calling the shooting an isolated incident, and they're asking anyone who might have seen anything to call them. If you don't have a motive for this incident, this is an isolated incident that occur on the Beltway and we do not have any suspect information. Eyewitness News tried to speak to Miss Clark about her experience, but she declined to go on camera.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136497/file/253083#t=4183.96,4277.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136497/file/253083/transcript/71182/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Eyewitnesses, we'll have the latest on this story with the 19 Eyewitness News. Also has a story that spans several decades to tell you about right now. As we start with a question, does Maryland have a serial murderer on its hands? Police think so. I mean, is this the best of all else for this man already serving time for murder who's just been charged with two more? Susan Collins is live in the Eyewitness News room to explain. They involve women and sexual assaults, Suzanne. Well, Vic, the latest two victims, Vernon Lee Clarke, is accused of killing were elderly. They were attacked in their homes almost 20 years ago. But police are running more tests on Clarke's DNA and they say they hope to solve three other murder cases. This is the home where Vernon Clarke grew up with his mother and grandmother in Elkridge. His stepfather says he was never the violent type, but she was a wonderful person. She would do anything for anybody. The murder of 17 year old Rebecca Daly Davis was a bizarre one. A week after her disappearance from her Elkridge home, her body turned up in the woods. Then, broken mannequins one dangling from a tree were found near the home. There wasn't a suspect in the mannequin murder until an arrest yesterday. But there is a feeling of relief here. Yet at the same time, it brings back memories and it makes it harder to have it brought to mind. Vernon Clark was transported this morning from prison to face charges in Davis's death. It's believed Clark was Davis's gardener. And everybody said they couldn't imagine why she was killed because she would have given anybody anything they wanted. Police pulled out the old evidence and ran it through new DNA tests coming up with Clark.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136497/file/253083#t=4279.52,4375.76"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136497/file/253083/transcript/71182/annotation/44","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, it's very wonderful, of course. Too bad it wasn't in place after Dolly got killed. And it could have saved some other people. But that's the way these things go. Baltimore County police also retested body fluids found during the murder and sexual assault of 68 year old Evelyn Diedrich of Catonsville. That happened a year after the Davis murder. Police say Clark's DNA has been found in that case, too, and he's been charged. Meanwhile, he's been serving life for murdering and sexually assaulting Kathleen Gulden, manager of the Fat Tuesdays bar. Nine years ago, in her Elkridge apartment 20 years ago, Cabell and Sarah Faulkner were murdered here in their home in Howard County. That case was never solved, but something interesting has come up. Apparently, Vernon Lee Clark worked for that couple's trash hauling business for a time. Now, some DNA tests are being done. That's less than a mile from Davis's murder. So was the murder of 81 year old Ivan Watson. Police are also testing evidence in that long unsolved case. Our world seems to be filled with people like that these days. And I don't know what you do about it. The three victims were killed in different ways. Davis was stabbed in the neck. Dieterich suffered blunt trauma to the head, and Vic Gulden was shot with a shotgun. Well, Suzanne, by the way, Clark has two children and four grandchildren who have this news. Of course. Thank well, thank you for your report, first of all. And we do know that he does have children who have been visiting him in prison. Other stories making headlines this Friday, August 6th. For almost a month now, Paul has been smelling a disgusting odor while working on tractor trailers in Elkridge. The odor was coming from the woods behind him. It got so bad, Paul and his coworkers decided to investigate. You could see. See some of the skull and stuff laying there. And then there was two. There was two little dogs in a bag. What they found was shocking. Then a pile of what appeared to be dead dogs. Sam, you could see the maggots there. We can't show you the graphic pictures of the pile of dead animals here because it's too disgusting. But from where I stand, I can count. One, two, three, four. But these faces tell it all. It's disgusting. It's unhealthy. Less than 50ft from the pile of carcasses through the woods, you can see a cemetery. When Eyewitness News took a closer look, we found it's actually a pet cemetery. Hundreds of headstones were touching words from animal owners. And there's an overhead, but there are no headstones for the animals in these woods, which is on pet cemetery property. Well, back here, the Baltimore Ravens are readying for their upcoming exhibition football season at their western Maryland college training camp. But in his commentary tonight, Michael Lesser says they're alienating some fans in Westminster. When the Ravens first announced they'd be training at Western Maryland, it seemed a great public relations gesture, evoking memories of the Baltimore Colts. The old Colts not only trained at the college, but hung out with their fans at Westminster's taverns and restaurants. That was part of the team's charm. They made themselves part of the community. The modern Ravens have no such time for mingling. They're very serious people. Their hours are used up in the complex business of learning how to throw forearm shivers. In fact, the game has changed since the Colts era. And the Ravens do have to get ready for the next season. But it's hard to imagine that the town of Westminster, which welcomed the Ravens with open arms, means so little that a few team members couldn't find a little time here and there to walk around to just indicate, thanks for your support.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136497/file/253083#t=5733.08,5839.4"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136497/file/253083/transcript/71182/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Football's not just a business.
