The polls show Americans are fed up with their political leaders. We'll talk with the heads of both parties Sunday. Finally tonight we're going to take a train ride. It's a ride that combines high speed with some high drama. Passengers may know where they're going, but they don't know just what's going to happen along the way. ABC's Mark Leckey bought a ticket in the serenity of the Japanese countryside. A bullet train streaks towards its mountain resort destination when suddenly you. He'd dead but 9 or 6 to Morioka. It's been hijacked. Armed thugs terrorize the passengers. Hostages are taken. The conductor is beaten up. Now, you don't have to be Agatha Christie to realize all this is an act. In fact, 600 tourists, mostly young women, have paid $400 each for the pleasure of this felonious flight of fancy. Sponsored by a theater company and Japan's national railway. The young producer and writer said it was a great way to get their work seen. The train company said it helps sell seats. Yeah, and the passengers? Well, most said they loved the thrill of being so close to all those real looking guns, though they certainly wouldn't want to do this in America where the guns are real. But back to our story now. This drama doesn't end when the bad guys are captured. Passengers must next try to unravel the mystery. Once in Morioka, the tour guides lead their flock to a local farm, where they are given clues by a cow. Mama, mama. Shakespeare. This is not. Then it's time to ruminate over a cold beer and swap theories in a hot bath before the next day. When at a local auditorium, all is supposed to be made clear. So just why did the thugs hijack, terrorize and brutalize? Well, it apparently had something to do with this lady in white. Unfortunately, it is all very complicated, and we're not really sure we understand that ourselves. But we'll try to work it out on the train ride home. ABC news, Morioka, Japan. The Maryland State Fair is in full swing, and so are the dozens of rides and amusements that make the fare such a great attraction. The weekend team's Mike Schuh tells us how safe and reliable you can expect those rides to be. The midway is supposed to amuse and entertain. You are supposed to come home in one piece without being fleeced. This is Rose Barco. One of these blues in front of us is her daughter. Never worry about the safety of all these rocks. You know, you don't know how. Well, together they're put together. The kids thought it was a ferret. We'll. They're looking for the ferret. I have no ferrets here, but the midway operator hires this guy to ferret out any safety problems. How do we know these rides are safe? First of all, the state of Maryland has been in here and done an inspection, a very thorough inspection, and I do a daily inspection. Plus, each ride operator does a daily inspection. Further, he says the inspection earlier this week resulted in no violations. Let me let me give you a statistic. The amusement industry moves more people than any mass transit system in the world, with fewer is now onto the midway. This is your last and final call to get in. You guys want to rest? Here we go. Sound of the Bell Gang cinema. The midway used to conjure up notions of flinty eyed swindlers. What about nowadays? A lot of ones that are kind of hard. But the turnout's really great. They're not. We're not impossible. The games aren't all that hard. And the prizes? Usually a stuffed animal. The midway operator, says they're pretty easy to win. Well, we've got 18 tractor trailers full of prizes, and by the end of the fair, it'll be gone. He says that conflict can be resolved by looking at these. They're the rules. They're posted at each game. We should look at the game. We should look at the rules. Number one. The operator and or someone on this midway will direct the patron to our executive office, where they will be greeted by one of our executive staff, taken directly to the source of the problem, and it will be resolved most times in favor of the patron. Even once you know how to solve any problems, common sense is still to be used. You spent how much to win? What? I spent $21 doing this week. Like a poster board. Is it worth it? Yes. For the weekend. Team Mike Shu, channel 13 Eyewitness News. If you spot what you think may be an unsafe ride, report it to the fair office. And if you plan to go to the fair, the first ride you might want to consider is light rail. We're told traffic and parking are no fun out there. So how about it, Bob? Any trouble getting there? Actually, we didn't have any trouble at all getting in off of Timonium Road. There's a big parking area there. Of course. The main gate off of York Road. It's crowded, of course, but the police are handling the traffic and we didn't see any real serious backups. We'll check the temperatures around the area right now, because we did get up into the low 90s in the city. Right now we've dropped back below 90 degrees, most everywhere. Hagerstown. Still tenaciously hanging at 90. But as the evening wears on, things will pull off a bit and get us down into temperatures a little bit more reasonable. You can check out the national radar to see where those showers that I mentioned are across the central part of Pennsylvania, on out into the northwest corner of Ohio. A little blob of thunder showers down over, the easternmost extent of West Virginia. And that's why I think there's a chance you might see some thundershowers well out to the west in the state and up through southern PA, but I'm pretty sure we're not going to see any in the Baltimore metro area tonight. Here's our satellite view, and you get the idea that, things are changing a bit to the north of us. There goes that front, with a band of clouds pushing in toward the region, but really is not going to materialize into showers for us.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136386/file/252972#t=1368.79,1452.85"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136386/file/252972/transcript/71274/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"A couple low pressure systems creating some stormy weather up in the northern Plains to the Great Lakes, but massive subtropical high over the eastern part of the country is going to keep us with that clockwise circulation, bring in a strong southwesterly flow, and as that moves toward the east, you'll see warm and humid conditions being pumped in. We're looking for a high tomorrow, 94 degrees, the warmest day we've seen in quite a while. There's your downtown high. Just about everybody will be above 90 degrees. And, if you're headed out on the bay tomorrow, southwest wind 5 to 15 knots a one foot shot up the bay. Water temperatures at 77 degrees. And, down at the beach, 86 degrees will be your air temperature, the surf temperature 70 degrees. Before we go to the forecast, though, we've got the hot air balloons taking off from the infield. Let's see if we can get a look at that real, part of the festivities here. The bunch of them, a whole bunch of them took off earlier and headed on out. They got two more getting ready to come back, getting ready to take off. So lots of things happening here. So let's go on to the forecast. We'll show you what's going on. Hazy and humid overnight. Lows should be around 74 degrees. And tomorrow it's going to be a burner 94 for a high with lots of humidity, hazy sunshine and check out the five day. Maybe that's why he doesn't understand how hard we work for our money. He wanted a new national sales tax and supported higher taxes on gasoline. As a Tennessee senator, Bill Brock voted to raise our taxes, then voted to raise his own pay. It's outrageous. Ruth and Aaron worked for every dime she has. She's vowed never to raise our taxes or her own pay. The difference is clear. Bill Brock is too liberal with our money. Ruth and Aaron is a fighter for Maryland taxpayers. Going into the break, we are in for some hot August type weather, and I think you're going to find tomorrow to be one of those kind of uncomfortable days. So we'll start with. Right. What's going on right now? We do have the humidity outside in some areas. A little bit of oh is it haze or is it fog. A little bit of decrease in visibility as a result of that humidity? Nothing very serious, but certainly evidence that the moisture is in the air in a very, very distinctive fashion. We're at 75 degrees here on TV Hill already having dropped into the upper 60s up and up in Harrisburg. But everybody is below 80 degrees right now. And as it's, the temperature settles down, the relative humidity goes up as the temperature goes down. And we could be seeing some, localized patchy fog in those areas where the wind is very light tonight. Looking for showers in that humidity. Nothing really threatening to bother metro area, but just north of the Mason-Dixon line through southern PA, some tenacious thundershowers are hanging on. Normally by this time of night, you know you'd expect from the heating of the afternoon having been diminished somewhat, that those thunderstorms ought to settle down. The main features that we have on the map. You can see the activity up here across the Great Lakes right now, as a low pressure system moves its way across southern Canada. Our weather, though, right now being dominated by the massive subtropical high, this is that summertime high pressure system that will give us the pump to bring in the warm and humid air with its clockwise circulation. We'll see breezes tomorrow from the west to the southwest, bringing in some hot and humid air. We expect tomorrow to get to 94 degrees downtown and in the low 90s, most everywhere else doesn't look like a big threat of a shower out of that humidity until this front gets closer and that'll occur tomorrow night. It looks like there are your expected temperatures tomorrow we'll call it 94 downtown or 94 at the airport. Equivalent temperatures in the city just a little bit cooler over on Eastern Shore, 95 at Richmond. No. And 90 degrees in Harrisburg.
