Also that month, the Levitts wrote two checks of $10 ,000 each for membership in an exclusive Florida country club. And as late as November 19, Jeffrey Levitt wrote a $35 ,000 check to his sister. Jeffrey Levitt's only explanation is that he didn't understand the court order. He was simply paying the bills to keep his business concerns going. Judge Kaplan, in a stern, angry voice, told Levitt, there is no way in the world you could not know that every time you wrote a check, you could not know you were violating that order. It makes a mockery of the whole system. But for a lawyer to make a mockery of the system is a bad thing. Judge Kaplan then sentenced Jeffrey Levitt to 18 months in jail and fined him $150 ,000. And despite pleas of leniency for his wife Carol, Kaplan sentenced her to 30 days at the city jail on 15 consecutive weekends and fined her $50 ,000. So on January 17th, Jeffrey and Carol Levitt will experience firsthand what thousands of Marylanders experience each year. And that's what it's like to go to jail. And on January 30th, Jeffrey Levitt will be right back here at the Clarence Mitchell courthouse. to be arraigned on a 25 count indictment that he stole and misappropriated millions of dollars as president of Old Court Savings and Loan.
