The summertime crime wave is not letting up in downtown Baltimore. Overnight, homicides and several shootings come as no surprise to city police. If you think you have been hearing more about homicides on the news lately, you are right. As of today, 161 people have died violently this year in the streets of Baltimore. It may have been a blunt blow to the head that killed 40 year old Ronald Walker last seen alive on Tuesday. He was found last night on a kitchen floor in a puddle of his own blood. A domestic argument turned deadly overnight. The victim shot in the head and pronounced dead on arrival at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The violence has been repeated day after day, adding up to a 9% increase in Baltimore city homicides this year. And that translates into some very long hours and some very tired homicide detectives. You can't take a murder investigation and hand it over to someone else. Yet the continuity, the initial original investigator pretty much has to stick with it all the way through. A homicide detectives work starts during or right after the on scene investigation. And frequently it doesn't end for many hours, consecutive hours or even days. The guys around here have learned to get by with very little sleep. You have many times when you work midnight, then sit in court all day and then get a few hours sleep and be back in. But more frustrating than the long hours are the cases that won't be solved regardless of the phone calls and investigations because someone out there isn't talking.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114892/file/218450#t=117.15,240.7"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114892/file/218450/transcript/62309/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Many of our cases this is very frustrating. People have just got to start coming forward more. Now, if you want to come forward more and have any information about a city homicide. All you have to do is pick up the phone and dial 911 and ask for homicide. A tense situation in the Middle East as the world watches and waits for Iraq's next move. U.S. allies put their forces on alert against a possible move into Saudi Arabia in the wake of Iraq's invasion of its oil rich neighbor on Thursday. Since then, Iraq has installed a puppet government and what it calls a popular army to defend it, while warning the rest of the world to warn against any attempt by any power to aggress against the against Kuwait or Iraq. Such attempts will be firmly dealt with. Iraqi officials insist they will withdraw from Kuwait tomorrow unless there is a military threat. A shift in the distribution of federal moneys will reduce some Aids prevention programs right here in Maryland. Uncle Sam is starting a new funding plan, taking money away from states with smaller populations and giving that money to those with higher populations. And that's bad news for Maryland. Since April, the clinic has tried to secure its funding from the city health department. The money was to come July 1st, but the clinic says the bureaucracy delayed the process and they've already borrowed three times to stay open. Now, we don't have money for for payroll or for paying the health insurance premiums for our employees or to pay our doctors for the month of July. A bill just passed by the U.S. Senate could win the battle against some forms of cancer. The measure pinpoints early detection as a major factor in preventing death from breast and cervical cancer. The bill provides $50 million for states to use in preventive health care and screening. Maryland Senator Barbara mikulski proposed the legislation. She says that if this bill becomes law, states could provide pap smears and mammograms to those women who otherwise could not afford to undergo. They know the average mammogram can cost over $100. For a lot of women, particularly single mothers, they often have to choose between getting health care for their own children or a mammogram for themselves. Orioles will try to keep the good times roll until it against the royals at the stadium. Last night, it was no contest. A young boy is rushed to Johns Hopkins just after 830 tonight, Police and medics rushed to the Dr. Bernard Harris school playground. A little boy shot in the side, the youngest victim of this violent night in East Baltimore. I heard seven shots, seven, seven shots. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. And I looked around. There was a little boy running through here. He fell. And the other one, he didn't get a chance at all. He just dropped. I've started to run. The violent crime. The kind of crime that all too often catches young victims in the crossfire. Police have not released the name of the young victim. The young boy is suffering from a gunshot wound to the side and is in surgery at this hour at Johns Hopkins. Well, tonight is nothing out of the ordinary for city police. It was a similar scenario last night. Two homicides and several shootings. So far this year, there have been 163 homicides in Baltimore City, 15 more than last year at this time. That makes for long hours and sometimes frustration for the detectives whose job it is to find answers. It may have been a blunt blow to the head that killed 40 year old Ronald Walker last seen alive on Tuesday. He was found last night on the kitchen floor in a puddle of his own blood. Many of our cases this is very frustrating. We know who did it and we can't prove it. We just don't have the evidence. And that's where the citizens you know, you have a lot of good people in this city, but they've got to understand that we can't convict people because there's rumors that they did it or so-and-so saw them do it. The Orioles winners over Kansas City 14 to 1 last night found themselves on the short end of a 9 to 1 score tonight stadium. After the second inning, the Royals probably could have phoned this one in. There were a couple of very nice defensive gems by the Orioles, though. George Brett laces one up the middle speared by cow for Billy four to force a Gold Glove play in the outfield as well. Curt Stillwell pops one down the line. Watch Steve Finley racing in track on the ball all the way, lunges and makes the grab. Trump was the Orioles couldn't catch him when they left the yard. Second inning. Pete Harnish in trouble with the bases loaded. Mike Macfarlane going to get it all way back out there in left field. A grand slam homer and a four nothing lead for the royals in the second inning. One of four homers on the night for K.C. two by Danny Terrible. This one in the seventh. Watch Brady Anderson. He's going to kind of accompany the ball up and over the wall. Whew. Kansas City wins it 9 to 1. Pete Harnish takes the loss. Mike McFarland had the big blow. The Grand Slam homer for Danny Carnival, his second homer. We came into the second half trying to make ourselves respectable. You know, we had a lot of pride in ourselves. We're just trying to play good, consistent baseball. We had a lot of guys hurt, and some of the other guys are sucking it up a little bit and playing a little bit, you know, above their game, just trying to do whatever they can do to contribute. And that's what's been happening. Okay. And one of those on hand to watch Jim Palmer's induction will be his manager and former foil, Earl Weaver. Earlier this week, Jim commented on his special relationship with Earl. You know, the relationship I had with him was very special. It was very tenuous at times. But on the other hand, you know, there have been some great marriages that that that aren't always harmonious as you would like. There's a lot of acrimony in marriage sometimes as there is between a pitcher and a manager, because we're all we're always thinking about the ballclub. And I sometimes was thinking to myself, the greatest pitcher in Orioles history and the only pitcher in major league history to post World Series victories in three decades will have his big day tomorrow. Probably won't be a dry eye in the place. We'll have a complete report on Jim Palmer's induction into the Hall of Fame tomorrow night on Eyewitness News at 630.
