Winter blast and blanket as up to eight inches of snow is dumped on the Baltimore area. Of course, the snow came yesterday when everyone immediately worried about what all that white would do to the way to work and school today. And while what was left did slow things up a bit. In Hartford County, schools closed, almost everyone seemed to once again cope. If one blanket of snow can have two bottom lines. One is most schools did open today. Some delayed, but the city time. And the other is the side streets stayed covered and slippery. And if you owned outside the rights of others, you had a great shot at getting stuck and not moving. But one man's malady is another man's artistic material. And the man behind that mayor is Richard McLaughlin, a Woodbury who stepped out into the Winter white overnight and stayed about one this morning to walk the top. Snow But this morning, McLaughlin found himself and his horse, the object of many motorists. Curiosity, who he met, oddly enough, of this Bronco riding sculpture. A driver error is being blamed for the crash in the 2800 block of East Madison. One vehicle was stopped when a snowplow apparently hit it. One person was taken to the hospital, but the injury is not believed to be serious. Temperatures are rising and the snow is melting. But is the worst over? Marty tells us what we can expect. Marty. I tell you what, first and foremost, let's take a look. Some high temperatures expected throughout the metro region this day. And really, it is 60 and above 60 and eastern. In fact, say experts, hypnosis takes us to the underutilized subconscious brain. Basically, we only use about 10 to 15% of our brains. And literally, hypnosis is increasing the use of the rest of that brain that's not being used. It's been 35 years since the American Medical Association first decided that hypnosis was a useful therapy for everything from arthritis to migraines. Since then, millions of Americans have undergone hypnosis, mostly to control bad habits like smoking and overeating. But thousands more have been put into a trance just for laughs at comedy clubs like this one across America. Is that your show? That's the list. Agents and field volunteers. I know that it's not a trick. Hypnotist like Richard Delavan really do put people in a trance and they know who makes the best subjects.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/139225/file/258049#t=1238.7,1354.8"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/139225/file/258049/transcript/72978/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The person who has what I call it don't care attitude. The National Weather Service predicted 1 to 3in in Baltimore and only 2 to 4 north and west of the Beltway. Turning to rain by afternoon. When all was said and done, there were only two inches of snow around D.C. It was the Baltimore area that really proved forecasters wrong. There were four inches at BWI and eight in Owings Mills. More than the weather appears to have caused a major pileup in the city involving a snowplow. The operator of the plow plowed into the rear of a Ford Escort, which plowed into the rear of a Thunderbird, which hit a truck and ended up on top of the escort. Though the T-Bird driver was taken to the hospital, no one appeared to be seriously injured and no charges were filed. Well, we can definitely blame yesterday's snow for the collapsed roof at the old Greyhound bus garage in the city. The garage is located directly behind the former Greyhound bus terminal on Center Street. The authorities tell us the weight of the snow caused the roof to collapse. Both the garage and the terminal are vacant and no one was hurt in that collapse. Clearly, Mother Nature still has the last word on what will or won't happen weather wise. The old days that we had to repair a unit, we simply opened the line green to freon that, you know, let it go and through the air, you know, there was never any concern about the really the concern about Freon and other CFC is, is that it is eating holes in the Earth's protective ozone layer. Those holes let in ultraviolet radiation from the sun, which can cause skin cancer. And so CFCs are being phased out. If you're got a situation where you're not too sure, it's always best to be cautious. So if you look at something that is a hazard and can be replaced, then it's best to be cautious to take it easy. Closed systems are already being used to keep freon from escaping when air conditioners are charged. But during the next two years, a new ozone friendly chemical called R 134 A will begin replacing freon. And because R 134 H destroys the tubes and seals the most current air conditioners, the new coolant will not be compatible with most cars now on the road. No, it's not. But that's a risky assumption, as this viewer found out after a long trek home for a weekend away from her college classes. Jennifer Berry usually hopes to unwind and catch up on some sleep. Instead, she's been spending her time trying to unravel a mountain of medical bills resulting from an emergency hospitalization last June. At the time, she was working as a dental assistant for Dr. Stuart Brown, and medical insurance was an employee benefit and a full time employee. I guarantee medical coverage. And he paid for. It wasn't a doctor or anything. As evidence of coverage, she had an insurance card and certificate from the insurance carrier that she had a maximum benefit of $5 million, but not a dollar was paid and Berry was receiving progressively nastier notes. I was his employer. I was his responsibility. He should have took it upon himself to resolve it or to find out from the insurance agent what was going on. That agent was Robert Spielman, who would not agree to be interviewed. But we learned he failed to provide some necessary paperwork to the insurance company. So her coverage was canceled. But none of that was told to Jennifer Berry before she incurred the bills. Assuming Jennifer was justified in relying upon the representations that she was covered, she doesn't have to worry about who dropped the ball.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/139225/file/258049#t=2835.58,2931.49"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/139225/file/258049/transcript/72978/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Her employer and his insurance agent will have to fight that out between themselves because one of them will have to pay her bills. That's all I want paid. Through his attorney. Dr. Brown agreed she should not have to suffer the loss and will settle the matter with his insurance agent after paying her bills. What did you check on? Well, you know, we all periodically check our credit reports. We apply for credit. They say something about our credit. We can, you know, deny his credit. We can look at the credit report. You ought to do the same thing with insurance. You ought to periodically actually write to the insurance carrier, whether it be, you know, nationwide insurance, whoever had Blue Cross Blue Shield, whoever has it, and have them verify to you as an individual employee, not through your employer again, but you directly that your insurance is in place and you're covered. A miracle baby for the Bork winds. At 45, Donna was having problems conceiving. To add to the pressure, the couple really wanted a boy. We already had two little girls. And a father, I guess. Always wants a son. We had two girls and we just wanted to balance out the family here in Walton, New Jersey, at the Cooper Center for Reproductive Endocrinologist, where the Falklands found the answer to their dilemma, a technique used to improve their odds of having the son they always dreamed of. That was the real difficult part. And theoretically, she shouldn't be able to have had the baby that she did. Fertility expert Dr. Jerome Check used a procedure called the swim up technique to improve the odds the Baldwins would have a son. It's based on the fact that male or y sperm are faster. So this is a multi tube swim, a procedure we keep letting the faster sperm swim out and then take that fraction and let that faster group swim out. So we get them a higher percentage of the fastest swimming sperm, which are the Y sperm. The woman is then inseminated with the processed sperm. And Dr. Check says she now has an 85% chance of having a boy. But critics of this technique say chances are they probably would have had a boy anyway. That's why we're trying to do this in a more scientific manner, because even though you have something, you're really never sure and things could just turn around a lot of things that not a lot, but some of the things that you come up with and you think are real. Then when you do it over multiple times, then you find out it isn't so and so. That's why the technique has been published. The technique for getting a girl is based on the same theory. But Dr. Check says fertility, not gender selection, is what he promotes. I just wanted another baby. You know who? Boy would be nice, but I just want another baby. And she has one. She has her son. Now, there's this skepticism in the medical community about all gender selection techniques. And in fact, we contacted Dr. Theodore Barranco, who's head of reproductive endocrinology, BMC, who says there's no dependable, scientifically sound method, and that's why Jpmc does not offer this technique.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/139225/file/258049#t=3871.06,3969.79"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/139225/file/258049/transcript/72978/annotation/39","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, but what does Dr. Check say to that? As we told you earlier, there's been a shakeup in the city's housing department with Commissioner Robert Hearn moving to a new position in the wake of recent housing housing troubles. In his commentary tonight, Michael Lasker remembers a time when the department was indeed the pride of city. That goes back a while, but in recent months and even years, it's been getting pretty rough over there. Beginning in the 1970s, when Baltimore City first felt the thing we once called the Great Renaissance, the Housing department was home of the best and the brightest. Not only were creative housing ideas born there, but other notions as well. The city fair, the revitalization of the mechanic theater, the rebirth of different neighborhoods. Lately, though, it's been a disaster. First, the revolting conditions at Lexington Terrace Apartments. Dennis. Boy. Thanks, Bob. Finally tonight, it may seem like a long time ago, but do you remember when a shave and a haircut cost two bits? Well, George Bauman does. And he says there's something symbolizing that time gone by. That also seems to be fading away. The barber pole. Is there anything more familiar? Time was when there were 1 or 2 in every neighborhood? Not anymore. They still exist, but they're becoming far less prevalent. There are several reasons. Many barber shops have evolved into styling salons, some quite fancy, most serving women as well as men. Barber poles are still available, but like everything else, they're expensive and they're easy targets for vandals. Most of the ones I found today and I really had to look to find them. They're far from new. And this is one of the really old ones. The barber is 83 and the pole is at least 20 years older than him. When the red, white and blue bands are revolving, the shop is open. When they're not, it's closed. And did you ever wonder about the colors? I did. So I stopped by the Paramount Shop on the Avenue and asked Denard Smith. Smitty, who has been barbering for more than 40 years. All the white was clean about the purity of things that we have to call standards that we had to live up to. The Red signified that we dealt with bloody situations like gunshot wounds, pulling teeth and everything else. That concern with blood and the blue was, I guess was shown as a sign of our dependability and loyalty to the person.
