Five of the scouts remain hospitalized at this hour. An emergency landing was made at BWI Airport last night, and luckily no one was injured. A federal express jet crew smelled fumes aboard and made the landing. No passengers were on board the freight plane. And investigators found the source of the fumes, a leaking gallon can of cleaning to solve it. Meanwhile in the city police continue their investigation of the shooting death of a thirty six -year -old man who was shot at a pizza parlor. Police say Jerry Broughton was killed at around one o 'clock this afternoon at a carryout restaurant in the four hundred block of Millington Avenue. A nineteen -year -old suspect who may be related to the victim is being questioned by police. The shooting occurred during a domestic dispute. A summer storm did minor damage as it whipped through the area last night, but mainly it just knocked out a lot of power. The storm did its worst damage in Baltimore, Howard, Anne Arundel and Carroll Counties as lightning struck houses and splintered trees. At its peak, 30 ,000 BG &E customers were without power, and tonight several hundred are still without power. Lightning is also being blamed for a four -alarm fire that totally destroyed a vacant warehouse in Finksburg last night. The fire raged through the Shipley Transfer Company, and it took firefighters hours to bring it under control. They were apparently hampered by the lack of water in that area. Also, a two -alarm fire, which gutted three Fells Point row houses, is being blamed on arson. During the past four weeks, firefighters have responded to six fires in that immediate area, which have been determined to be arson or suspicious. Arson investigators won't say whether the fires are the work of the same arsonists. Yesterday's fire also damaged a neighborhood bar. Well it's not every day that city police and animal control department officials are called to a house to pick up a cougar. But this afternoon a cougar was brought out of a Pimlico area row house after animal control officials were tipped off that the cat was the pet of a local resident. Wrapped in a yellow blanket, the cougar was brought out of a row house in the 5000 block of Chow Grove as neighbors curiously looked on. The animal had been put to sleep. City animal control officials were closed -mouthed about why and how the animal was in this residential neighborhood to begin with.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144425/file/266924#t=231.24,371.02
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144425/file/266924/transcript/77123/annotation/13
Speaker 3: I can't give out any information because we're still investigating the complaint.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144425/file/266924#t=371.33,374.59
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144425/file/266924/transcript/77123/annotation/14
Speaker 1: You can't even tell me what they're going to do with the cougar at this point? City Court Judge Joseph Kaplan made the ruling. after Becca Associates refused to answer a lawsuit filed by Fidelity Federal Savings & Loan. Anthony Grandison, who will stand trial for the murder of two Pikesville hotel workers, will not be alone. A federal judge ruled that Janet Moore, Grandison's girlfriend, and two others will be standing trial together. The charge is conspiracy in the gangland -style slaying of Scott Pahowitz and his sister -in -law, Susan Kennedy. Those murders occurred in the lobby of the Warren House Motor Hotel in Maine. At the investigation into the murder of Alicia Carter, a Goucher College student continues at this hour. Baltimore County Police are questioning friends and classmates of the 21 -year -old Charlottesville woman. Police are hoping to find clues as to why she was found stabbed to death just inside of the college gates. They are also questioning area merchants and motorists passing through Goucher's campus. But last night, despite the rain, the Orioles were able to come from behind with three runs in the ninth inning to beat the Chicago White Sox 5 -4. Rich Dar was last night's home run hitter, or you should say, a hero. A game -winning RBI, which was the O's fifth straight in the ninth inning rally. The game ended at 1 -17 this morning. That was a big yonder. Mike Bartiker pitched all nine innings. He won his eighth game of the season. Now, with two outs in the ninth inning, Cal Ripken starts the hit parade with his single right up the middle. Now, Eddie Murray, he keeps things a little alive with the single to advance Ripken. Then, of course, there are two men on base. And brother Lowe, John Loewenstein, connects with this hit. The score, Cal Ripken, the Bears are only behind 4 -3. Then it came Kenny Singleton's time to get into the hit parade. He gets a hit right here. Kenny not puts it in the bullpen, but he goes right through the second basement. And I tell you, the Orioles are rolling at that time. It's four to four. John T. Bone Shelby came in to run for Lowenstein. Chicago boarding a reliever. Dick Tidrow only to meet Rich Dower. And Dower has a game winning hit with a single that boarding Shelby. The O's win five to four. Remain in first place in the American League East. They take on the White Sox. Some baseball action this afternoon in Pittsburgh as the Pirates and the Montreal Esports got together for a preview of perhaps the National League Championship. You never know. Montreal came within one game and a half of Pittsburgh before this game in the National the East. but not for long. Andre Dawson, considered by many the best player in the National League, today got things booming in the first inning, a three run blast the left field, the score Tim Raines and of course, Mr Little. Expos on top three to nothing. The Pirates picked up two more, but guess what happened is Dawson once again. At first you don't succeed. Try, try again. His 25th homer, then Cromarty. Warren Cromarty came up. He blasted another shot. They went on to win the baseball game by the score of 73 over Pittsburgh. Now let's take a look at the scores today in the American Toronto. Well, they couldn't beat Milwaukee and that was the only game in the American League three to nothing. The other games in the National League, Montreal beat Pittsburgh seven to three. New York behind Darrell Strawberry beat Chicago four to one and Houston beat San Francisco four to two. That's a final. some football history today for the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Cardinals. They got together in jolly old London for football. Nearly 33 ,000 fans showed up for what they saw, a football game. The Vikings won 28 -10 over the Cardinals, jolly old football, and I guess one of those guys was saying, oh, that's a touchdown, old jolly old chap. Well, turning to golf action, third round action tonight at the PGA Championship stop at Rivier Country Club near Los Angeles. And guess what happened? It was Hal Sutton, yesterday's leader. After three rounds, Sutton look good with this birdie putt right here on the seventh hole. He was four shots up and how Sutton is right behind him is Ben Crenshaw and Bruce Leske. I tell you, he looks good playing some magnificent golf. Today marked the 58th running of the million dollar Meadowlands race for East Rutherford. It's called Harness Racing, perhaps one of the oldest sports in this country. A fill of twelve got together and guess who won? Not TV Yankee, not Joey Devine, but a horse by the name of The Una, driven by Stanley Dancer, a heartwarming victory to win the stakes at the win this year. He paid eight dollars, three sixty, and three dollars. tying the track record for Phillies at 1 minute and 57 seconds. And I tell you, he was worth $550 ,000. Devine came in second and Woolley Gill came in third. Three Maryland men pleaded guilty in the Art Sleesler gambling case are scheduled to be sentenced on August 23rd in U .S. District Court. The three could face up to five years in prison and find up to $10 ,000. Tennis great Bjorn Borg may be back to play, that's right, in the $400 ,000 World Mix Doubles Championship in November. The announcement is expected to be released at 8 p .m. tonight. You won't see much change in the way of temperature. Look at the current readings right on the television hill right now. Give you an indication of what we are at. Eighty -four degrees, sixty -two percent humidity. Winds west at seven, the barometer is steady. At old Fort McHenry, high and low tides. And our sunset tonight will be at thirteen minutes after eight o 'clock. Sunrise at six twelve. Well, people out the old ball yard tonight getting ready for... or baseball i was out there last night waited a long time until it finally stopped raining you know what after waiting so long for the ballgame to start i ended up like ronnie mentioned and went to one fifteen i end up leaving in the seventh inning everything good happened in the night right anyway it did get up to eighty nine doesn't look like the rain is going to fall on the ballpark tonight what rain there is a little bit about ourselves jumping up here and there let's take a quick look at the uh... radar and here it is from sky high you see there are some cells up here in uh... both southern new jersey and there are some back in virginia in a couple showing right here lot of you may hear thunder when you do hear thunders a pretty good idea that it may be raining someplace but chances are more of you will hear thunder then get rained upon because the storm cells pop in pop out and they are very very small at this part in time we aren't even any putting it into the forecast at all although maybe two percent of the population could conceivably see our satellite view, and I thought I'd give you a view of some place that's kind of cool south of the border, down into Latin America. We're having such heat and such humidity, they're having winter down there. Right now the current reading in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for example, is 62. It's a cool 65 over here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. La Paz, Bolivia, it's 47 degrees right now after 7 o 'clock at night. Meanwhile, closer to the equator. up in san juan puerto rico it's eighty four degrees and in the mountains outside of mexico city it's currently fifty five that sounds nice and cool doesn't it across our country pretty much heat ninety degrees about all every part of the nation as you see here for tomorrow it's about the same thing there's a bit of a cool front going across which brought some of the storms especially yesterday it'll be all broken up by tomorrow the temperatures will still be in the nineties and there will still be a southerly flow coming up bringing us uh... more heat more humidity Doesn't look like we'll really have a break in it. until perhaps this guy back in here this is another frontal system stretching from central canada all the way back into oregon some showers ahead of it may reach us by well let's say every day this week we'll have a chance of showers but the certainty of showers may be on monday and again on tuesday once this passes we may see a little less in the wake of humidity but nothing changeable in the way of temperatures Around the area now you see to the east of the bay. Temperatures are pretty much in the lower 80s 82 in Dover and 82 out the ocean city in Salisbury should be a nice beach Day tomorrow hazy temperatures pretty much near 90 degrees over to the western side of the area 87 degrees in DC It's 85 up in Harrisburg 86 the current reading in Cumberland and winds will be from the west and then light and variable for the remainder of tomorrow But those of you are going to be out in the bay boating So the five -day forecast from AccuWeather looks the same all week long, doesn't it? A mix of sun, a mix of haze, and a chance of thundershowers. May have a thundershower late in the day, every day, including tomorrow. Better chance on Monday and Tuesday. Okay, Debbie, that's the way it looks.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144425/file/266924#t=1419.639,1648.85
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144425/file/266924/transcript/77123/annotation/63
Speaker 1: okay ron thank you the afram festival got off okay today since there was no rain as ron mentioned the festival which attracts people from all over the nation depicts the growth and development of black businesses this year the food is also representative of traditional soul food dishes like pig's feet collard greens but there is also a wide selection of west african and caribbean foods the festival continues with food and entertainment tonight and tomorrow And that's our report for the moment. In fact, the union has urged all local members to stand by to walk out at midnight if a settlement is not reached. These are the issues. AT &T wants Communications Workers of America members to pay for 20 to 25 percent of their benefits package, something the union calls unacceptable. Vigils held around the world marked the 38th anniversary of the bombing. On August 6, 1945, a B -29 dropped the bomb, nicknamed Little Boy. Well, today was the day that an English balloonist attempted to break the world's altitude record for hot air balloons, but just about everything went wrong. The wind unexpectedly picked up and the balloon was deflated, well, almost. The balloon ripped wide open before reaching the ground. There was also an injury. Pilot Burlington was lifted 30 feet above the ground as he was holding onto the tether. He let go and came down much faster than the balloon, and he suffered only minor injuries. Thank goodness for that. We are lacking a lot of rain. It's to no one's surprise at all. July was a couple of inches below what it normally would be this time of the year, Debbie, and you know there's no strong indication right now that things are gonna change. It's a very typical for August. August dog days, hazy tonight, visibility is only about two miles. Maybe if you want to find a villain in the whole mess, it's the jet stream. Jet stream usually propels all the weather across from west to east across the Did I say? The jet stream is up in Canada right now, and propelling their weather from west to east. Hardly any of it's getting to the south, so as a consequence, every little system that comes across the United States, we're taking a good, hard look at, and we have to play by ear, so to speak, on a day -to -day basis. Here are the current statistics on Television Hill right now. Temperature is down to 75. You'll never know the difference, because the humidity is up at 88%. The winds are just variable, and the barometer's beginning to rise. Our tides, next high and low tide at Fort McHenry. Sunset! Tomorrow night will be at 8 .13, our sunrise tomorrow morning will be at 12 minutes after 6 o 'clock. Well, to no one's surprise again, it is a very hot and humid night again. Uncomfortable, it's going to be that way tomorrow night. It could get up to 89 degrees for the high today in Baltimore, a little warmer than that downtown. I think at the inner harbor it got up to about 92. Look for tonight's low, not to be any different than, well, I'd say 72, 73, maybe 75 degrees in the city. So, a nice evening for sitting out on the steps late and hoping that some kind of breeze. may whip in and fan you off a little bit. I can cool you down a little bit by looking at Sky Eye. Our picture right now from Sky Eye shows us that there are some showers to the west of us, and you'd say, well, are they going to move this way and maybe cool us out? No, it looks like they're going to break up. They're over Charlottesville, Virginia, a little bit to the north, along the James River, and a few to the south of Martinsburg are moving in an easterly direction. AccuWeather tells us they probably will break up. The storm cells. move in and move out very rapidly and they are very small at this point in time. Nothing in the way of excitement as far as a big major storm tonight to really cool things down. You may hear some thunder, you usually hear thunder when rain comes down, but very few of the population will see any rain at all, maybe less than two percent. There's around the state right now in our state map. You see temperatures are generally in the upper seventies, won't get much below that. Winds are light variable 2 to 10, they'll remain that way through tomorrow. from outer space sky tracking a picture taken just a little while ago of the eastern one -third of the united states and you see it's fairly clear over where we are a lot of summer clouds and some shower activity breaking out north carolina south carolina down toward georgia all moving generally in that direction won't affect us at all tomorrow's map for mackie weather will show us pretty much that uh... things will begin to change a little bit there was a frontal system right about here it will break up Our flow will move up in this direction, but the difference will be, although there are a lot of scattered showers breaking out dotting the eastern one -third of the United States, there will be a frontal system moving through by sometime Monday night or Tuesday and it could conceivably lower the humidity, not the temperature, the humidity, just a little bit. Five -day forecast from AccuWeather, doesn't look much different than it has, 91 and 91 and all week long we're going to see hazy sunshine, we'll see a chance of thundershower now and then. Probably the best chance will be Monday night and Tuesday night, and then for the rest of the week things are going to be relatively warm, maybe less humidity by the time we get to Wednesday. Eight o 'clock in the morning, hazy sunshine, a red ball be up there and 76 degree temperatures. Can't promise anything in the way of rain, Debbie. Maybe a scattered shower here and there.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144425/file/266924#t=2708.42,2929.16
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144425/file/266924/transcript/77123/annotation/99
Speaker 1: Okay, thank you, Ron. He gets this home run. Now, that's the little shot down the corner off of Julio Cruz that brings in Greg Walker. Then it comes a big shot by Hurlbanks. The young man from the eastern shore of Baltimore, or Merlin as I can say, he takes this one right up for the shot. If that wasn't enough, the next batter, Greg Lozinski, comes up and guess what he does. You've got it, folks. A home run. The Orioles are now down by the score of five to nothing to the White Sox. The Orioles did try to come back though. It was in the Orioles in which they tried to come back. Dan Ford hits this blue single in the sixth. The score is John Shelby, makes it the score, sixth to one. The Orioles are trying to come back. Gary Renneke subbing for the injured Eddie Murray at first a cleanup spot connects on this home run that just stays inside the foul pole and it makes it 63 but the Orioles just couldn't win the baseball game. Ken Singleton came in. He had a shot. He tried to score John Shelby. He did Shelby scored the final score 64 in the Orioles lose. Well, believe it or not, the O's will soon have the services of Mike Flanagan again. That's right, Mike Flanagan will be pitching tomorrow for the Baltimore Orioles, where Ramirez coming in tonight's game for Dennis Martinez. It puts the Birds in a corner looking for a starting pitcher, and you know what they had to do? Send Mr. Margello back down to Rochester so the Birds will be having Mike Flanagan on the mound tomorrow at 2 .30. Also, the Orioles class A farm team, the Hagerstown Suns, if you can believe this, they won three games in a row. They picked up a double hitter. And they won the opening game of a game that was postponed, so they win three games in a row. And I tell you, I really can't believe that. Other baseball action. Well, in Pittsburgh this afternoon, Andre Dawson was able to bring the Exposals in a half game of the Pirates with this homer. Andre Dawson had two as 24th and 23rd homer of the year. In New York, well, the Mets left all the big bats to the pitchers. His name is Walter Well. He had two home runs in that game. He became the first pitcher to do that in five years as they downed the Cubs four to one. Other baseball action today. Well, let's take a look at the scores around the American League and National League. Well, we know the Orioles lost by the score six to four, but we didn't lose any ground because Detroit lost to the Yankees by the score of 13 and three. It was Toronto over or losing to Milwaukee three to nothing. It was Kansas City over Boston four to nothing. Oakland Minnesota four four tie California Seattle. We don't have a score as of yet. and also texas beat cleveland by the score of six to one and the national league was montreal over pittsburgh seven and three the new york mets behind that big picture and those big bats for the one it was philadelphia and saint louis and a ten ten tie atlanta and los angeles one to nothing after three innings after eight innings at san diego over cincinnati by the score of eleven to two and houston beat san francisco and frank robinson and the giants by the score a four to two. It will probably go down in history as that jolly old football game between the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Cardinals, the final score 28 to 10. The key to the story, it was played between 33 ,000 fans where in London. It was the first game played on British soil as the Vikings Tommy Kramer led his team to victory as one of the most exciting moments of the game was the 76 -yard punch you're going to see. It was returned by Mr. Best. Now watch this. This guy is right here in the middle of the field. He goes completely up on the right hand side. He only has to get by this one guy, gets by this one guy and what happens? He goes in for a touchdown and the fans in London are very happy. Turning to golf action, Hal Sutton has a two stroke lead going into tomorrow's final round of the PGA Championship at the Riviera Country Club. Sutton has a two stroke lead of a Ben Crenshaw despite a one under par 72 round. Sutton at one point had a four stroke lead until he bogeyed on the 14th and 15th holes when Crenshaw birdie 17 and 18th to finish an even par 71 for Jack Nicholas Well, he got back in contention yesterday with a 6 under par 65 stayed in contention with an even par 71 tomorrow's final Round will be here on channel 13 at 3 o 'clock in tennis action this afternoon in Indiana. Two of the game's brightest young stars took center court of the U .S. Clay Court Championship. 17 -year -old Andrea Temivari of Hungary, a number one seed in the tournament, beat 19 -year -old Zena Garrison of Houston, Texas, and straight set 6 -2, 6 -2. And also 19 -year -old Jimmy Arias will take on Meryl Pasell in the men's finals tomorrow. and everyone's talking about a young man by the name of bjorn borg he may be coming back into the world of tennis they say bjorn borg will participate in a doubles championship sometime in november and now let's take a look at what happened at timonium today it was a 7 -4 exacta paying 90 dollars in the eighth race and the ninth race 6 -4 exacta 26 dollars and 80 cents and the tenth race the 3 -1 exacta 45 dollars and 40 cents and the triple 3 -1 -4. $520 .80.
