Families with relatives serving in the Persian Gulf got a brief distraction from their worries this afternoon. A group called Operation Desert Support held a luncheon for people with relatives based on the Baltimore USNS Comfort Hospital ship. There was plenty of entertainment for the whole family and everyone took lots of pictures to send to family members aboard the Comfort here in Baltimore. Marchers for peace in the Persian Gulf headed down Howard Street this afternoon, ending at the World Trade Center. There they rallied for an end to the war, calling for an immediate ceasefire. And when, as Mr. Washington mentioned, 305 people are murdered in Baltimore City in one year, that's 305 murders. Too many. One woman on stage knows full well the horror. Lee Pierson lost both her sons to violence. In 1981, her 16 year old Danny, was an innocent bystander killed by a stray bullet as a bank guard fired shots at robbers. Tragedy struck again this past September. Son Jody was shot at a festival during an argument over a girl killed one day before his 19th birthday. We don't have to pick up a gun and blow somebodies brains out over a jacket, over a girl of a pair. Tennis shoes. Sometimes, unfortunately, nobody wants to understand until it happens to them. And when it happens to them, then they are the first ones to jump on the bandwagon. Louis Pearson joined a number of bandwagons, speaking out against the violence that rips apart communities, that threatens the future of young black Baltimoreans. We have to stop, turn around, look at each other and start loving each other instead of hating each other. Inside the rally's program is a pledge to fill out a written commitment to get rid of drugs and guns in the community, to protect children and adults from violent encounters, to make the neighborhoods safe for everybody. Baltimore City police are still looking for the killer of a seven year old East Baltimore boy. Someone murdered little Rodney Cheney in the bedroom of his apartment early yesterday morning, apparently while his mother was at work. According to the mother, Rodney was supposed to go to school at nearby Thomas G. Hayes Elementary School. But around 4:00, when she returned home, she discovered her child dead in the bedroom. According to police, the boy was sexually abused, then strangled to death. And Toronto County police have charged a Baltimore man with attempted murder for allegedly beating a Jesup woman into a coma. 25 year old Dawn Marie Gallus was left for dead outside the Donaldson Glass warehouse last November after being severely beaten in the head. Now, police say they've arrested and charged 21 year old David Stanfield for that assault. He's being held on a $300,000 bail. Dawn Marie Gallus remains hospitalized and suffers from severe brain damage. In other news tonight, four people were rushed to area hospitals this morning after a fire broke out in their Dundalk home. Six year old Devon Gadsden was apparently playing with matches when he accidentally set a mattress on fire. His father tried to put it out while the children escaped through the bathroom window. Give the people the people this is an anti trust their God. My God. I'm down here from the top. That's nice. My God. If I were. This incident began when the pastor asked the congregation if anyone had special concerns to express. The man stood up and demanded the United States put an end to the war. The congregation attempted to stop the man's speech by breaking into a chorus of God bless America. Calls for peace are being heard every Sunday morning in churches across the country through prayer and song. This Sunday morning, one congregation voiced their prayers in another way. The weekend team's Melissa Sandor explains. A faithful congregation pays close attention to its pastor. And Lord, we especially lift up the war in the Middle East, knowing that so many lives are touched through this terrible war. So winter is still here before spring arrives. Check and see how the satellite viewed this whole situation today from the top down this afternoon. Lots of clouds around. In fact, it was cloudy through most of the day and the clouds generally drifting along a front from west to east have been with us throughout the day. But now we are beginning to see some precipitation falling from those clouds in the form of light rain in some areas. Also some light snow, particularly on the lower eastern shore. Right now, a check the radar in just a moment. But look at the temperatures. We have fallen below 40 degrees in the central part of the state. And remember, it doesn't have to be 32 degrees at the ground to see snow. It has to be below freezing in the cloud above the ground. And typically temperatures in the middle 30s or lower can support snowfall. So we're getting in that crucial area as far as temperature goes right now. Today, we got to a high of 39 degrees overnight low last night at 18, rather chilly compared to what we would expect at this time of year.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136132/file/252583#t=4488.79,4571.8"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136132/file/252583/transcript/71046/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"A high of 44 and a low of 26 would be normal on the bay tomorrow. Winds will be coming from the south at 10 to 20 knots. Now a look at the local radar picture and you see the developing system here as it loops through. Notice the spread of rain and a lot of this is still aloft right now. We've got warmer air riding up over the colder air that has been entrenched at the surface. And in fact, this warmer air now beginning to produce some showers and precipitation will be mixed as sleet and snow throughout the nighttime hours and perhaps spreading into the early morning. Look at the national radar picture we see It does extend a bit further to the south, that frontal system showing up there. But there is some warm air pushing its way in here. And as we said by Tuesday will really feel the effects of this. Tomorrow will get into the mid-forties, But we will be dealing with some rain as the day warms up. Certainly any threat of sleet will have passed by that point. Here's how it looks on the wider view. There's the frontal system here, moisture being brought up from the south and a storm system forming out here right now east of the Rockies will be moving up. And tomorrow we'll place that storm system out just to the west of us, moving into the warm sector. So through tonight, watch out for that rain and snow combination. In fact, check that forecast, mostly cloudy, as we will call it, but some sun, some snow and rain, not sun, please. Arriving later, overnight low, 32 degrees. Thank you, Jimmy, very much for that. A high temperature tomorrow eventually will warm up to get rid of all of that stuff.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136132/file/252583#t=4572.31,4664.38"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136132/file/252583/transcript/71046/annotation/44","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And on the five day now cloudy conditions but high temperature on Tuesday pushing 60 degrees. We see that only in the rodeo. No one gets stung. The new Isuzu Rodeo at just $12,499. There's no comparison. Well, we're back with Dr. Bob Sapp. All right. Some bad stuff in the morning, maybe. Well, it's spotty. I mean, we're not looking for real widespread glazing or anything, but we do have some sleet as occurring is not out of the question that some areas could see some slippery conditions in the mornings. All right. But it is a holiday. And now, like Sandra said, shopping day tomorrow to those big sales. It's just the temperatures are real crucial today. Let's go look at the temperatures around the state at this moment. They are falling into the mid 30s down in the lower 30s. And remember that the ground surface temperature doesn't have to be the air temperature at service, doesn't have to be at 32 or below to get snowfall. It has to be the temperature in the clouds that's freezing and mid-thirties will allow for snow to occur.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136132/file/252583#t=6140.4,6245.07"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136132/file/252583/transcript/71046/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And in fact, some snow showers have been reported over on the northern part of the eastern shore down into Salisbury for a while, although now it's changed to rain and over through the northern D.C. area. The airport, as a matter of fact, reported flurries at 10:00. There doesn't seem to be much going on at the moment, but like I said, temperatures in the mid 30s, a little bit cooler to the north and to the west as it typically is. And this is where we think the biggest threat of having perhaps some slippery conditions during the morning hours exists. Winds in the bay tomorrow do show some promise because they will be coming from the south at 10 to 20 knots. And in fact, some warmer air is moving into the region. And that's what's bringing us this situation right now. Actually, look at the local radar because we can get an idea of where the pattern is showing rain as this stuff is moving across. Notice the heavier areas that have been popping up, not really spreading very far to the north. And in fact, as we cycle through the loop. Notice how it abates and sort of diminishes in extent. So it looks like we might actually get a break for a few hours. But then again, long about sunrise, expect to see some more of this coming through the area open up to national radar. We see more to the south and in fact, a lot of rainfall falling down through, say, western Tennessee and into Arkansas. And this moisture is being pumped up ahead of a low pressure system which will be moving into the area and bringing us some rain on Monday into Tuesday in particular. Here it is. But this will eventually bring us some very warm temperatures. We're looking for temperatures almost to 60 degrees by the time we get to Tuesday. Tomorrow, we will see that wedge of warm air making its way into this area. Temperatures to the mid-forties and then long about Wednesday. This will finally move through, giving us another chance of showers and then a return to more seasonal temperatures. But the rest of tonight's looking like this. Mostly cloudy, of course, with some snow and rain around, it will be spotty and intermittent. 32 degrees for the overnight low tomorrow. Rain, drizzle and fog throughout the area on and off. 46 degrees for the high tomorrow. But then check out Tuesday here. The rain will let up in the morning. We should push 60 degrees.
