Officers dressed in riot gear clashed with black college students in time for an end to the summer party. Police were jeered by students who threw bottles. And they say what better place to do that than here At this very moment in 16 of the city's Guardian Angels are having their vigils outside the federal buildings. And remember, the federal building is the extension of George Bush in the fight against the drug trafficking and the interdiction. And on the heels of his speech coming Tuesday night to the nation unveiling his drug program. We're showing support in one way, saying, George, hey, if ever there was a time a politician had a mandate, this is it. We from the front lines to saying, go for it, George, but don't leave us hanging with false rhetoric and leaving out community based programs like themselves or not fully funding those left in. We're already told part of the president's almost $8 million anti-drug plan will ask the nation to become involved in community service to help fight the drug program. So today, we take a look at addiction. It is not a new phenomenon. 1234 From the mean streets of urban decay to the leafy suburbs where white collar addicts reside. Americans are taking drugs. It's being called an epidemic with a governmental declaration of war. Take my word for it. This scourge will stop. But this scourge is not new. At the turn of the century, opium dens thrived. Cocaine use was epidemic and legal. It was said to cure toothaches, indigestion, hemorrhoids. It was even used in such products as Coca Cola. Cocaine was the favorite drug of Sigmund Freud and even the fictional Sherlock Holmes. More recently, drugs have been popularized by some musicians. If you all get down, down on the ground. Okay. And they've killed others like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Scientists are only now beginning to understand the mysteries of addiction. What does it mean to be an addict? It means from a physical viewpoint, they need the drug. And it means also psychologically, they need the drug and they become totally preoccupied with obtaining the drug and taking it to the exclusion of all other normal activities. This mouse is a cocaine addict. Once the mouse has learned to press a lever to get cocaine, he'll do so repeatedly. If allowed to, mice and monkeys have taken cocaine until they died.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136088/file/252490#t=332.49,446.79"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136088/file/252490/transcript/70824/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Crack or smokable cocaine is insidious for three reasons. It's cheap. Smoking gets the drug directly to the brain. And the high lasts for a short period of time, making the user demand more. But scientists caution that the problem of addiction is so fundamental that even if all the cocaine in the world were eliminated, we would still have a drug problem. The problem is going to go well beyond this. It's going to continue and people are going to just switch over to another substance. Scientists point out that chemicals alone won't cure an addiction. Environment plays a critical role. They say if you take an addict off drugs, he'll likely resume his habit. If he returns to the environment where he was hooked in the first place. Thousands of fans might get big every year, but it's more crowded with bumper to bumper traffic. Good morning, everybody. You know, it's sort of crowded, but lots some of the watch out the way for all the little you know, you just really don't have to wait for a lot. Does it bother you that it would be crowded? So when it comes to crowds I don't like, I just make it pretty enjoyable. And enjoyment can mean anything. From a ride on the Ranger to a hunk of fried dough to a carnival game. Hey, we have an island. Where? And it's not just the fairgoers who are flying high. Area merchants say record attendance has made this a banner year and it's been the best year yet. Crowds are up about 10%. As far as the places that you had mentioned before, the price of them the same for the last five years, we haven't had to raise them, mainly because the crowd has been continually large and we haven't had one rainy day this year.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136088/file/252490#t=2953.56,3047.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136088/file/252490/transcript/70824/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Just another reason this year's fair has been a swinging success. Area there. Come up on the screen, ready to print it, press this button. Bring it down to the square. You should get no chemicals to fool with and no enlarging. You can do your own cropping here. But then it doesn't take much time to get hooked. I think you've created a monster. I'm going to go home and look through all my negatives. But because it is a prototype, this photo store in Baltimore County is one of only two locations in Maryland where create a print is being tried out. Well, at this particular point, that the toll plaza, there is no toll plaza for the westbound traffic and also through the traffic improvements on an island with the overpass that's being constructed there, there's no backup walking on either. So there across the island itself, there's no problem. It's like you said earlier at Jackson Creek Road is where the problem starts. Right. Cuban President Fidel Castro toured the wreckage site less than a mile from Havana's airport. Dangerous weather conditions are being blamed for the crash. Most of the victims were Italian tourists. The Titan three has launched more than 100 U.S. satellites in the past 25 years, including the Voyager two space probe that just visited Neptune. It's being replaced by a stronger booster rocket, the Titan four, which launched its first satellite back in June. History is being made in communist countries around the world. I know where I'm going with my grandmother's school, but how they will react will vary, according to psychologist Richard Halpin. Some are very curious and ready to go. Others are beginning to have physical complaints that they haven't had all summer. Others are clinging a little bit more at home. We do have a serious weather talk about this huge hurricane at the Atlantic, Gabrielle, which we'll look at in just a minute versus take a look what's going on around our region. Nice, cool night once again. East southeast winds tomorrow, 7 to 14, only 57 up in Johnstown, generally low 60s in the suburban areas of the Baltimore-Washington region, 63 at Dulles at last report, 63. It sounds like a 54 at the Atlantic City Airport, which is not on the water. It's inland away from the water. They really do radiate quite a bit out there. Temperatures really do drop. Let's take a look what's going on as far as our radar is concerned. Some showers east of Hatteras. That is it. Nothing else to report. Very hot, humid weather down there. Record breaking and heat and heat index down there over 110 degrees. Dangerous heat down there. All right. Let's take a look at our cloud cover. Not a whole lot to speak of here in the east. There's a funnel system that will be moving through the region, kind of reinforcing the fine weather we've been seeing over the monsoon effect out west. Some moisture coming into the Rockies with some showers there. What we do want to look at, however, is Hurricane Gabrielle. This is a serious hurricane. Look how large this storm is. The eye very clearly shown here is the northern part of South America. Look, here's the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The storm now is about 1550 miles southeast of Miami, has winds of 135 miles an hour. It's moving to the west northwest at about 15 miles an hour. Most of the forecasters in the long range group feel that the storm will begin to recurve before it approaches the United States mainland. But we do not know this for sure. It appears, however, that most of the Caribbean islands here will miss the brunt of this storm. The strongest winds are up here in the northern and northeast sector. Down the south is not quite as strong. And if it continues in that path, we'll have to watch it extremely carefully over the next 3 or 4 days as it approaches the mainland east coast of the United States. This is something we have to really deal with and track very carefully.
