We'll tell you about the ocean in the bay in just about 15 minutes. When we take a look at your first one. Any forecast along the waterfront? All right. But first, let's get back to some of the stories making news this hour. Shocking news to report from Chicago this morning. Murder charges have been dropped against the seven and eight year old boys accused of killing an 11 year old girl from her bicycle. Patty Davis has the story from Cook County. Does that. After weeks of trying to build a case against two young boys, seven and eight years old. New evidence torpedo the investigation. And today we received the report from the state crime lab. It showed semen on the panties of the victim. Medical experts who we consulted confirm that the possibility of semen coming from boys this age is, at best remote. Prosecutors dropped all charges against the two boys in a court hearing Friday. The family of one of the young boys exchanged hugs and tears. Relieved their ordeal was over. There's a lot of healing to be done, and I will keep my praise and thank the Lord that it went the way that it did. Many in the boy's neighborhood had proclaimed their innocence all along. They did not do this. Someone else did it. It is their office. Not only were prosecutors back pedaling Chicago police who had insisted the two boys were responsible for murdering 11 year old Ryan Harris were also put on the defensive. Of course, it was sloppy police work. What else can they call it? An incompetent, sloppy, inefficient, ineffective police investigation. The head of the Chicago Police Department said he still stands behind his detectives. The facts that we had at that particular time and still do have is that it leads to these two young boys that they knew certain facts about this case that no one else knew.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136721/file/253431#t=1223.87,1329.98"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136721/file/253431/transcript/71554/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And we have to go with that. Any reasonable person would come to that conclusion. Chicago police are not yet ruling out the involvement of the two young boys in the girl's murder. Police wouldn't rule out filing charges against the boys again for the first time. They're admitting there's a lot more investigating to do. Patty Davis, CNN, Chicago. And these two boys were the youngest ever accused of murder in Chicago. So really shocking situation. Certainly is. Well, a celebration or a cause for concern? Well, it just depends on who you ask. Supporters of today's Million Youth March in New York say it is a call for African-American youth and unity and a gathering for intolerance. The organizer, Khalid Abdul Muhammad, has made anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic and anti-white statements in the past. There is a competing march in Atlanta today, which is open to young people from all walks of life. President Clinton wraps up his trip to Ireland today. Yesterday, for the first time, Mr. Clinton used the word sorry when asked about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. I made a bad mistake. It was indefensible and I'm sorry about it. So I have nothing else to say except that I can't disagree with anyone else who wants to be critical of what I have already acknowledged was indefensible. He did so. The apology came after one of his supporters, Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman, criticized the president on the Senate floor. Many other congressmen and Congress women are waiting for the Ken Starr report to come up before they actually comment on this whole case. Well, you know, ironically, it was one Republican congressman who didn't wait. And he's now facing some criticism himself. Indiana Republican Dan Burton, who just four months ago was quoted as referring to the president as a scumbag, admitted to the Indianapolis Star that he himself had fathered an illegitimate child in the early 80s as the result of an extramarital affair with a 38 year marriage that has produced three children. Burton said he admitted to the affair to take the spotlight off the Indiana woman he was involved with and their teenage son. One of the things that. For me to go public is the harassment this woman's family has been subjected to by the media. Reports surfaced earlier this week at Burton, the chairman of the powerful House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, Looking into campaign irregularities from 1996 was the subject of investigations by various news organizations about alleged marital infidelity, saying he would not be intimidated by such press probes. Burton pointed the finger at the White House. I think it's designed to say, hey, if you start pushing too hard on this investigation, that the president, the White House, everything you've ever done in your life may be uncovered. With the focus on the sexual life of President Clinton. There has been considerable talk in Washington that all other politicians could find their personal lives coming under intense scrutiny as well. But the White House adamantly denies that it had anything to do with the Burton story. His private life is exactly that private. It's nobody's business and nobody ever has or will deal with somebody personally if any White House is sensitive to that. It's this White House. It never has happened and never will happen. The conservative congressman has long been a critic of the president and came under considerable fire for his disparaging comment last spring. I wish I hadn't used that word, but I don't apologize for the sentiment behind it because I do not think he's an honorable man. Congressman Burton and his staff contend his comments about the president have never been about Mr. Clinton's personal life. But it remains to be seen whether Burton will remain as vocal given these new revelations. Bob Franken, CNN, Capitol Hill. And one guy in Washington says it's like comparing apples to oranges. Former GOP Chairman Rex Earley says the president's affair is like armed robbery and Burton's is like a speeding ticket. Jack, thank you very much. That's okay. You and Dr. Bill Howard and a close personal friend of his. Sally Myer joining us this morning. We're going to talk a little bit about I know you watched Chicago Hope and possibly E.R. and you see all of those residents on there with the doctors and they talk about spending long days and nights working the better. Is that right? Look. Okay. Well, in any case, they don't get a lot of sleep. So maybe we could start off by just talking about what is a resident and what are you doing right now? Well, I finished medical school about two months ago, and I basically take care of patients on the floor with the supervision of our attending surgeons and just try to help them out with their problems and deal with the issues during the day and night and make sure that they're doing okay. Okay. And this is part of the fulfillment of your of your actual. Tell you what is it called? Well, it's really an internship. And we do we spend most of our time on the floor, as I said, dealing with the problems, making sure that they're comfortable and that they're and you don't get a lot of sleep. But you can figure it out. You know, you're busy enough so that you're just running around trying to get stuff done. It's usually when I get home where I'm just about to crash. Okay. But we see those images on television. You see the residents where it seems like they're sleeping for three seconds and then they have to get back up. And I mean, I have actually known people who've been residents and say, I just got off a 36 hour shift. Well, it's not a compromise. The care a little bit. It doesn't really it's people can do that. And, you know, you have to remember, medicine is not a 9 to 5 job. So when you get out and practice, when you're really taking care of patients on your own, you don't get that much sleep either. Sometimes you have to be ready to do it. So they learn that and they do it very well. There's no compromising on patient care. They do a great job. Okay. So you think, though, that even like after being up for, let's say, 24 hours, you still think that you're able to care as well as if you just had a good night's sleep? Yes, I think so. I mean, you know, you wake up and there are real issues, you know, that the patient depends on you and relies on you and and that wakes you up pretty quickly. Yeah. Okay. They wear white, not purple and black, and tend to salute, not score. But when Ravens players hit the field Sunday, they'll know the power of the U.S. military's backing them up. The whole thing is overwhelming and we're honored to have that name. The Raven is the third ship in the history of the Navy, and I hope we can bring it a lot of honor. The United States ship Raven will be charged to protect the fleet, opening the sea lanes that the US Navy may answer the call anywhere, anytime. The Raven first sailed as a schooner in the War of 1812, then sailed off the beaches of Normandy and World War Two. Members of that crew attended the ceremony. You've seen the Saving Private Ryan this summer. Those guys that cleared the beach for those folks to go ashore, they're here today. And now the traditional long glass has passed from a member of that crew to the new Raven crew. A 19 gun salute makes it all official. With the commissioning. Baltimore becomes the only city in the United States to have two ships named after its major league sports teams. A ship named after the Orioles was commissioned in 1995. We get a lot of people here. It breaks my heart that we're not doing more to help families live safely in every neighborhood. My dad was a union steelworker when there were 30,000 good jobs at Bethlehem Steel. Today, they're less than 5000, and Maryland is almost dead last in new job creation. We need to cut taxes and reduce bureaucratic regulations. Here's where I taught high school biology. You look at those normal numbers and yeah, we're getting into that time of year when pretty nice temperatures are a thing to be expected. Southwest winds expected on the bay.
