The reaction. Now, first off, your name is Patrick. Stop that for me. Patrick. Michael, spell that family c h a and your last name? Yes. I'm p s o n. And you pronounced Simpson, right? Simpson. Simpson? Yes. Simpson. Last time that folks saw you was 1981. You were driving a cab. That's right. Lenny Anderson did a story. How did that all come about? Well, I did a few things, and I've been singing to people in my cab. And I had called her up and, you know, sent the story and, you know, how to entertain people. People liked it. And they said I should, you know, like, pursue what I'm doing. And then they caught wind of the story, you know, and she came by as a cab driver. You had a chance to meet another one of Baltimore's famous cab drivers. Jesse Green. That's right. Jesse Well, we passed each other all the time in the city. As a matter of fact, we probably argued a couple of times over some spots at the hotel. You know, who was going to get the first fare? Yeah, he's. Ah, I've seen him a lot. I haven't seen him in a while, though, you know, I don't know if you've done a story recently on him, but I have. What is that noise to you? Said radio. In some ways I thought it was just. Okay. So again, you had an opportunity to meet another famous Baltimore cab driver, Jesse Green. And where he was, his thing was giving tours. Yours was singing. Mine was more singing Jay-Z. He had a quite a busy schedule. He was at one all the time, one evening magazine. I had one spot. But yeah, my main thing was singing to my customers.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136819/file/253831#t=3.87,130.33"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136819/file/253831/transcript/71686/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And just driving my cab. Making a living. When did you start singing? Well, I've been singing all my life. I always like the Frank Sinatra and stuff like that when I was little. And I was in choirs throughout high school, and I wanted to pursue a singing career after high school. So you've been singing as long as you can remember? Pretty much as long as I can remember. After high school, I learned to play guitar and started writing songs. You were. You were born and raised in Baltimore. Born and raised. Our Sinai Hospital Spent most of your youth in foster homes? Yes. In and out of foster homes. You know, with my mom and then a foster home, maybe with a relative and such, because my mom had a medical problems. But she always got us back, you know, when we went. So then so then when you were a teenager, what did you start in your early 20s? You started driving in my early, probably around 24. So when you start driving, you have in your early 20s, you started driving a cab. Yes, that's that was it. 20 of around 21, about 23, 24 somewhere around there. And did you know when you started driving a cab that you were going to become the singing cab driver? Nothing is happening. No, it just happened because I had been writing songs at that point probably for about three years, three years more. And so I would try out my songs on the people because, you know, that's you know, that's just a simple stage. You know, you have a one on one. They can't, you know, until you get out of the cab, you have them with a captive audience. I adore Baltimore to the city had adapted that as their slogan for tourism. And so I wrote up a little song called I Adore Baltimore. And how did it go to you? First of all, it is a rocky Mountain high, almost heaven. People always searching for more, looking for a home to put their heart in me. I adore Baltimore. You still love Baltimore? I love Baltimore. I still consider that I live in Baltimore even though I'm in the county now. But it's a it's a great place. So you drove the cab for for several years, and now you're in the kitchen business. You design and install custom kitchens. That's right. I'm a kitchen man and I don't sing until after the kitchens are done, usually. But my father in law trained me to design kitchens, and now we're in the business. We're in the TV Guide every week, and we're full fledged kitchen and bath business. Now, Mama, you said you don't sing until the job is over. How? Well, you know when you're installing, don't you just kind of like, hum a little, sing a few ball? I said, I do that, but probably not when I'm working. Usually when the customer comes in and I'll talk to them. If they're religious, I'll sing a little religious song or you know, and they get interested and I'll sing a song or two to them. But I don't want them to think that I'm into singing more than I'm into put in cabinets in. I talk to your wife, your wife's name now is what you ask me. Betsy. Betsy. I talked to Betsy and she said that you're obsessed. Every four years you go through this obsession about voting, and you're.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136819/file/253831#t=236.77,352.24"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136819/file/253831/transcript/71686/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And you've been writing songs about getting out to vote. Yeah, that's a civic responsibility. Part of the whole political system that's ignored. You know, there's the Democrats, there's the Republicans and all that stuff. But I'm more concerned with everybody voting the people's responsibility of the two party system. So this being an election year, you have a song already? I have three, three, three songs. Well-produced. Well, we're going to do we're going to show one. We're going to enter one song. Which one you wanted to be? Who should be president of America? Do you have a preference of who should be president? I would never state it because, you know, my my cause is inspiring people to do their civic duty no matter what. I want them to think and use their mind and vote their conscience. That's putting a lot of responsibility on yourself there. I mean, to try to get out and and and and encourage folks to vote, I guess bipartisan or the way they want to do it, the way they want to vote. Yes. It's a lot of responsibility. And when vote when it's when politics come when the it's time for an election, that's the only time really to promote the vote. Although the two sides or whatever, cram up the airways and nobody really stands up for the vote. I stand up for the vote. I'm the one that says everybody should vote and be part of this system. You can't expect the two party system to work if the third party is the people and they're not involved. The election's over in November. Where are you going to be singing about then? I don't know. I'll probably just be putting kitchens in. Hopefully my songs will catch on and.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136819/file/253831#t=352.63,469.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136819/file/253831/transcript/71686/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"All right now. So again, I said the November elections are over, which going to be a theme. What are you going to sing about? What are you going to write songs about? Well, more than likely, I won't do anything till the next election. So voting is your thing. Voting is. And that's what I have 15 songs to promote to vote. I have a rap song. I have country songs. I have pop songs. I have rock songs. I can cover every every area of voting. And, you know, I guess I just have to hook up with public service people. But it's it's an obsession because there's not a lot of places to go with songs to promote voting. Well, you know, they got conventions coming up. The Republicans have a convention. The Democrats have a convention. Suppose you were invited by both parties to get up there and sing your song about voting. Well, that's one of my hopes I would like to sing at the Democratic Convention. But only if I can sing at the Republican convention. And if they grasp my idea, I think both Democrats and Republicans should pick up on my idea that somebody has to stand up for the vote in order. Even politicians, if they don't have people voting, they don't get mandates. They can't do their job if people aren't involved in the job. So your message obviously just isn't for folks who live in Baltimore, Maryland. Your message can go from coast to coast. Exactly. It's a national idea. And I. I spirit the vote like Uncle Sam spirited the war. I am the person that promote that you're going to. Who are you going to call? Patrick Michael Simpson to promote the vote? You can you can build your case right now. Bill and Bob I have your your name in one of my songs and you should listen to him. I think you'll be impressed with that. All right. We're talking about the convention now. Now's your opportunity to seek an invitation to the convention. So go ahead, Mr. Bill. Just in case Mr. Dole or Mr. Clinton is watching this morning, now's your opportunity to to fish or campaign for an invitation. Well, Bill and Bob, I would like to tell you that I am the one to promote the vote. If you cross me from both sides and you'll know that I. For how long is this? How long is the song? How long is a song for? Three minutes. You got a minute or two? I can. I can probably be cut to two. I'm sorry. Give me two minutes of the convention time and it'll knock you off your feet. That's right. Give me two minutes of your convention time and the songs will knock you off your feet and they'll help you because more people will be involved in the system and support you, whoever makes it to the White House.
