Those stories plus aerial highlights next with the night team on Eyewitness News. good evening everybody tonight a major air crash in dallas with more than one hundred people thought to be dead the exact figure is still unknown delta airlines flight one ninety one a wide body l ten eleven on a flight from fort lauderdale florida was plowing through a severe thunderstorm to land at the dallas airport then tragedy struck one survivor said the plane suddenly flipped upside down it then crashed at the airport and burned only the tail section of the huge plane was left partially intact Two people were killed when parts of the plane hit their car on a nearby road. There were 161 people on board the plane, 149 passengers and 12 crew members. At this hour, there are 33 known survivors. One witness said lightning struck the plane as it was landing in a heavy rain, but that has not been confirmed. The plane, the L -1011, is considered among the safest in the air, but it may have been no match for the violent weather it hit. This will be a long night for families and friends of those aboard Delta -191. After being notified by the airline, they began arriving sadly at airports in Dallas and Fort Lauderdale, mostly to wait. Many of the victims still have not been identified. We will have more on the crash immediately following eyewitness news at 1130 this evening with Ted Koppel and ABC's Nightline program. As bad as the weather was today in Dallas, it was worse in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Much worse. The city was hit with six inches of rain in six hours. That is half of what the city normally gets in a year. A wall of water eight feet high sent cars and trucks floating down the street like toys. So far, 11 people are known dead with at least 12 others missing. Perhaps worst of all, it isn't over. Forecasters say another storm is on the way for Cheyenne. For weeks, they were one of the biggest controversies at City Hall. So if you had any desire to play golf, this might be a great weekend to try a hand at it. We're going to play some tomorrow morning. Let's take a look at our current weather conditions. It's delightfully cool here at the beach, and it's a beautiful moon out tonight, clear skies. In the Baltimore area right now, under clear skies, temperature down to 68 degrees, winds out of the north at only about three miles an hour, and down here the winds are blowing about 15, by the way, humidity 55 percent, barometer 30 .20 inches. On the rise at this time are your tides and your sunrise and sunset. Radar tonight, not much on it except a lot of ground clutter. With the clear skies and the light winds, we're getting a lot of nothing but a little bit of ground clutter just in the center of our screen. No precip at all in the Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey area, West Virginia. Let's take a look at our clouds tonight. Now, what you'll note... Clear skies from South Carolina and Georgia, all the way up through Canada, all along the East Coast. A beautiful, cool air mass at this time of year. They'll have temperatures tonight with these clear skies in the 40s out in Pennsylvania and New York State. You have to look way out to the west to see a few clouds with some advancing warm air in Illinois and up through western Wisconsin. Along the Gulf Coast, a lot of clouds and some scattered showers and the humid, tropical air down there. Taking a look at tomorrow's weather map. Here's the way it shapes up. For us, great. High pressure sitting right over the region. That's why we'll have such nice light winds overnight and for tomorrow. Bright sunshine, dry conditions. Down to the south, showers and thunderstorms will continue along the Gulf Coast in that tropical area. To our west, slight warming taking place over the middle part of the country in the plains. That warmer air is going to start to move into the Maryland area by later Sunday and into early next week. Along with some more humidity at that time, it'll get a little bit more uncomfortable by. Monday and especially by Tuesday and by Wednesday we can see some showers out of that cold front you see across the Rockies at this time. Now let's take a look at our next five days. Okay, next five days includes your weekend and it looks just absolutely perfect. Let's take a look at it. There you go. Here we go. Let me get out of here. Okay, here we go. I don't have to have my forecast over my face, Jerry. For the next two days this weekend, sunny, temperatures in the low to mid 80s. low humidity overnight temperatures time in the mid fifties to the low sixties. Looking ahead to Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday, a little warmer, mid to upper eighties, more humidity in this in the air and a chance of a scattered afternoon shower, perhaps a thunder shower by Tuesday and especially on Wednesday. And if you happen to be getting up early tomorrow morning, 59 degrees under clear, cool skies. Enjoy the weekend. We've had a great time down here at the beach and we'll see you back to work on Monday. In the middle of all the disappointments this season, it's been kind of easy to overlook the fact that Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken continue to deliver and really hold this club together when it counts. Tonight at Cleveland, facing another disaster and maybe a loss to the Indians, Cal doubled home the tie run and Eddie drove home Cal for an 8 -6 win. Now, the birds break out quick tonight, which is unusual this year. They're ahead 2 -1 already. When Larry Sheets launches this long ball off Vern Ruhl, a three -run homer, he has 11 now in his rookie campaign, and it's 4 -1 for Scottie McGregor. But it wasn't to be for Scottie tonight anyway, for Scottie anyway. The Indians in the third, and Andre Thornton. When the Orioles had this guy targeted as the man they needed in the off -season, it goes for two -run homer, but for Thornton, just a seven -pitch, four -three birds. Then Cal can't handle this one. It gets through. And Cleveland takes the lead 5 -4 and Scottie's off to the showers. Now to the fifth, Lee Lacey with a long ball bid to tie the game. But watch, a fan reaches out before Joe Carter, the left fielder, gets a chance to grab it. The umpire ruled fan interference and calls Lacey out. So you can imagine what this did for Ol' Weaver. Probably put some more curl into that perm. He thought it would be a home run. Happy ending, here you go. In the sixth, Mike Young. This ball, well nobody's going to interfere with this one. It's over the fence for his tenth home run to tie the game. But then to lead off the seventh, Sammy Stewart to Brooke Jacoby, and the Tribe takes the lead back at six to five. But this time it wouldn't hold up. In the seventh inning, Cal Ripken doubled home the tie run and then Eddie knocked Cal home, and just like that, the Birds win eight -six, with Sammy Stewart going five over, powering in these, allowing just one hit, the home run. Y 'all remember 1983, and I think the sign of a winner is the big play in the clutch. This year's winner so far, Toronto, Now with 12 out of their last 13. They're down 3 -0 to Texas, no problem. George Bell with a grand slam and Toronto wins again. Texas manager and the umpire, Tim McClellan, discussing the pension fund issue, I guess, in the strike. In the first inning at Toronto, Cliff Johnson, who played here last year, nails a double for a 1 -0 Texas lead. And they will get ahead of the Blue Jays up in Canada, 3 -0. nothing. But in the bottom of the fourth inning, George Bell with a sacks -loaded grand slam banger right there. Garcia, Mosby, and Monix all score in front. It's 4 -3 Jays. 5 -3 they win it with Toy Alexander and Yumta and Henke getting his first save tonight. 5 -3 is the final score. Chicago is tied with the Yankees now in the eighth inning. Elsewhere, Detroit got back on the winning track, beating Milwaukee 4 -1. Boston leads Kansas City and they're just starting in California and in Oakland. In the National League, an important series. opened up in chicago this afternoon with the mets gary carter knocking dennis eckersley's uh... first inning pitch for a single imagine it if you will there it is right there that was the result chicago goes on to win the game two to one as you saw already los angeles beat cincinnati tonight five to three and elsewhere on the scoreboard Montreal beat Pittsburgh 3 -2. Atlanta is leading San Francisco in the eighth. Houston has a lead over San Diego by 3 in the seventh. And St. Louis leads Philadelphia 3 -1 in the eighth. This story now is about the strike talks. But there were none for the second straight day, and none are scheduled, and the strike deadline is three days away. Lee McPhail today speaking for the owners flatly rejected yesterday's proposal by Commissioner Peter Yuberoff. This is what really bugs me in these deals. I think at this point, I truly believe that the negotiators themselves, in this case McPhail and Don Fair for the players, get more concerned about their public image and whether or not they'll be remembered as the man who won, or worse, lost in the strike. And you know the only people who really lose in these situations. Meanwhile, the pro football TV season begins a new tomorrow with the annual Hall of Fame game seen here at 2 .30.
