And their fight began almost one week ago tonight. MORGAN State students have let us in on their next move. They say they are tired of other state run universities and colleges getting a bigger piece of the education pie. And Morgan students also have other concerns. Education reporter Debbie Wright has been following the Morgan State protest and was with the students this afternoon. Richard, as you know, it's been a long week of protesting at Morgan State University. University president Dr. Earl Richardson has told the students to go back to class or face the risk of no spring break. Well, this afternoon, students, community members and other supporters gathered outside the hall. The question, will the protest move into its second week? Oh, energized Morgan State University students and supporters gathered outside Truitt Hall by a little after 4:00. Student leaders told them the news they were waiting to hear. Ladies and gentlemen, our fight continues yet. This demonstration started as a 200 students sit in to protest state funding levels at the school. It ended with a demand to meet with Governor Schaefer. We are not the problem. The problem is with the state of Maryland. Governor William. And by late that evening, Governor Schafer told Eyewitness News that he would meet with student leaders, even though he said they were going about it in the wrong way. So you would be willing to meet with him? Oh, sure. Any time that you'd come down, they they'd call down to down to the state house. But by day three, the whole camp is virtually shut down, as most of the school's 4300 students boycotted classes, expanding the protest. Of course, throughout this protest, Governor Schaefer has encouraged the students to return to class. And although he says there may have been funding discrepancies in the past, he says that he has actually increased funding to the school by day for 800 students and supporters rallied in Annapolis while student leaders held their meeting with the governor. But back in Baltimore, Morgan State University president Dr. Earle Richardson put his foot down about the boycott. We must now insist that they return to the classroom by day five. Some students adhere to Richardson's order and went back to class yesterday. But today, an enthusiastic crowd of students and supporters rallied around student leaders who announced that the sit in will continue. We eagerly await eagerly, eagerly await the initiation of serious negotiations. So, Richard, of course, the real question is whether or not Dr. Richardson is going to cancel spring break. And we just don't know at this point. He basically, of course, supports the the efforts to get more money for the university.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77491/file/164420#t=264.66,373.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77491/file/164420/transcript/39231/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I guess he just minds how long this particular effort is continuing. No, unfortunately, Maryland did not make it this year. And perhaps they'll get a trip to another tournament sometime, a little bit later down the road. But three years for the NCAA? Well, you know, NCAA is for three years, but they there's another tournament up and they may get into that, but they didn't make the NCAA. They have decided just moments ago in Kansas City as a little down said the pairings were announced for the 64 team tournament. Fang Mitchell's Coppin Eagles winners of the Meac two weeks ago go to the Southwest Southeast regionals in Richmond, the place second seeded Syracuse. Terry Truax in the 2000 Tigers will face the number one team in the country. The Sooners and the Sooners of Oklahoma at Austin, Texas and the Midwest Regional and Georgetown will travel to Indianapolis to play southern or Texas southern in the Midwest. As for Maryland, a possible trip to the Knights is in the offing. They were not selected to go to the big show. I think it's ammonium holiday in there, whooping it up. Another good excuse to party big time. The Tigers and their fans having a pairing celebration to toast the Tigers trips to the NCAAs. Oh, well, you know, just the way I do everything that we did during the regular season that got us to the NCAA, we just go work hard in practice. Get a game plan to go up against Oklahoma. They're a good team. They were the number one team in the nation. And, you know, we just have to do the things that we need to do. We're looking at your victory the other night. I know that's kind of a cliche, Chanelle, that you're going to try to do what you have to have been doing all season long, keep within yourselves and everything. But this has got to be the most exciting and perhaps the scariest trip the town state's ever taken. No. Well, early in the season, we played Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. We played the University of New Mexico down in the tip, but we also played North Carolina down in the carrier, down in the Dane Dome. And I think the coaching staff did a great job early on to prepare us for games such as this. I mean, we played against North Carolina, who was a well-coached team, Syracuse, who was a very athletic team. And then we played in the tough pit down in New Mexico. Not a tobacco road team in the ACC Finals would have been nice to see Terry Holland's team get into the championship. But Georgia Tech was just too much for the Who's to handle today. And the task for Coppin State is just as rugged. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions will play Big East Power Syracuse in the first round of the Southeast Regional in Richmond on Thursday. And to discuss the feelings of his Coppin State teammates on the most exciting night yet in Eagle basketball history, we have the captain of the Coppin State Eagles, senior forward. Phil Booth. Thank you very much for coming and staying out late to be with us tonight. Give me an idea of the feelings of the team and your feelings personally now as you enter into this contest against a really tough ball club in that first round, the NCAA. Well, this is a big moment for the school and us personally, and we feel as though there was a match up with Syracuse and make them play hard and make them feel as though that our campus stays here. We're not an easy team to play against and this is big for the school. They're looking for this opportunity of saying this play against a big school. And so if you got any idea at all, if you've kind of anticipated in Syracuse what the matchups are going to be like, who you're going to play against and so forth, I guess how we matched up against Billy Owens, but I don't know what type of defense we're going to play against them just yet, but we'll find out Monday. We have practice and we're going to try to play them as hard as we can and give 100% out there on the court. You can't run and run against Syracuse, no doubt. We definitely do that. For 1990, we made one of the world's most beautiful cars more luxurious. But luxury isn't everything. So now when you buy a Chrysler LeBaron, you get a V6 engine, standard driver, airbag, and the world's most advanced automatic transmission all under one roof. Unless, of course, you choose LeBaron convertible. Then you get all those features. No roof. Chrysler, LeBaron, there is no luxury without engineer. I want to tell you that Townson has the luck of drawing the number one team in the country, Oklahoma in the Midwest Regional on Thursday at the two podium holiday in the Tigers, and their fans watched intently as the pairings were announced. And when hearing the official word, Kelly Williamson and the Tigers erupted in high fives. Here they go, all decked out. They're happy. But how in the world are the Tigers ever going to prepare for the powerful Sooners? While Kirk Lee and coach Terry Truex had all the answers for our guys tonight, pick my Tennessee a player I actually love. You know we're going to answer the way I'm playing. It's a big C. It's not like playing against somebody in our conference. You know, if there is an upset, there won't be Oklahoma beating Charleston State will certainly be on our side. And I think certainly the motivation is going to be there and incentive for our team. Anything can be positive. If you think you can, you can. And that's the main thing that Tigers will take on Oklahoma and Austin, Texas, Thursday at 1 p.m.. Maybe Chuck Lightning will strike in Texas for the Eagles head cop in the anxious wait to see who they play next weekend at about 645 when they learn they be headed for a showdown with the Orangemen of Syracuse in Richmond, saying Mitchell thought he was going to go up against the runnin rebels of UNLV. As you can see, the Eagles were very, very happy there when they heard they were going to go against the Orangemen. But I'll tell you what, the orange had better be ready. Fang has surprised more than one opponent in the Eagles dream season of 1989 1994, the Maryland Terrapins. The news was not quite as jubilant. Maryland was denied a bid in the NCAA days, despite a turnaround season where the Terps ended up with a record of 18 and 13. Probably was not. The sanctions that are handed down by the NCAA earlier in the week that prevented the Terrapins from entering the tournament. But probably Duke's overwhelming victory over the perps in the opening round the ACC Tournament on Friday night that likely swung the hatchet Maryland's way. Maryland was a long shot at best. But no, they didn't get into the semifinals of the ACC. That might have been the event that sealed their fate. They have a better than average shot at hosting it night game. We'll learn about that prospect a little bit later in the week. Finals of the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina. Virginia Cavaliers tried and failed to win one last championship for Terry Holland early in the second half. Virginia did take a one point lead. They looked pretty sharp in the early part. Three point shot by Kenny Tuttle rattles in Wahoos, led at 3635. Bobby Crimmins last won in 1985, picked up his second title. Today, Dennis Scott gets the feed from way out. He hits the bottom of the net. Scott, the tourney MVP knocked in 18. Georgia Tech put it away in the second half. They won the Atlantic Coast Conference, 7261 over Virginia in the Big East Final at Madison Square Garden.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77491/file/164420#t=3223.27,3319.58"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77491/file/164420/transcript/39231/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"That was a Cinderella Huskies of Connecticut that became long shot champions.
