I just ran the craziest race with the hash house here. Boy, was it fun. A multitude of marathoners. Solitary joggers around towers. Both are familiar scenes of running. But have you ever heard of hashing? Know. Scattered clumps of flour. A group of rowdy runners wreaking havoc in local shopping centers. It's all a part of hashing. We run in the suburbs, we run in the city. We run out in the sticks. We run in the wilderness. One runner designated. The hare leaves a tricky and challenging trail marked with flour and the other runners, which are the hounds. Try to follow it. Sound like the one I came to the 100th run of the hash house areas. To find out for myself. This is what you need to be sure. You got to know what the hair share that day was. Maui Hiroto. She explained the secret trail to our camera crew. I couldn't know the trail because I was a runner. Now he was the founder of Washington's hash house areas. When I came to Washington, since I didn't have many friends, I didn't have well, maybe I had two friends. These people were from the hash. So I start running with them as a guest. And since they have the annual meeting every year, these new owners, they have to tell me I have to quit. It's for the men's sports where I could run by myself or I could play tennis or I could do anything. But cash was my favorite part of my life. And then my roommate, when I was living in Chevy Chase, said to me, Why don't you start the ladies? And I start recruiting many people. And it's been to two years now.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114032/file/216770#t=123.53,261.26"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114032/file/216770/transcript/61564/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Two and two and a half years. But meshing has a long history dating back to 1938. A group of men in Malaysia ran every Monday night at the end of the run. They were greeted by a beer wagon from the hash house eatery to show their gratitude. They named themselves the hash House Harriers. All right, On on. Her passion is international, with more than 130 groups worldwide. Bill Panton introduced Hashem to the U.S. in 1972. When I first joined, I was in Kuala Lumpur in 1958. I think that was the only stranger in the world at that time. And I think the Second World War started in 1962, and that was in Singapore. And then in about 6507, war has just started mostly in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia. Some of the members take these runs very seriously in slightly unusual ways. They are run in the same pants. I used to take about 100 runs in the same pair of pants and my first hundred runs that pair of pants threw away. After that there was a hundred runners and now in my second pair of pants and my wife made the great mistake. Go there washing them. Usually I don't watch them. I just go on the same pair every 100 runs. What do I take by way of my procedure every time I made 140? We've got one guy here from London. Rumor has it I don't know if this is true. They say that he's the only person alive to run two horses in one day around the London hash in the morning and then take the Concorde over to Washington around the time. Taking it seriously doesn't mean these hackers run to win. She's not competitive. Somebody's got to be last. If last, maybe I'm lost.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114032/file/216770#t=261.62,395.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114032/file/216770/transcript/61564/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Supposed to be looking for flour. I say flour. 20 minutes. Well, it's not to compete. Why do these people join hash? No one has to come in first or no one has to come in last. Everybody just sort of runs to have a good time. They meet back and drink the beer. This is a nice way of keeping fit on a Saturday afternoon. Good prep for your mind as well as your body. Why do I run right in the hay? She makes a beer taste better. What do you. A masochist, I guess. It's a lot of fun. It's a good way to run about five or six miles a week and have a good time afterwards. The idea is also it's a good, healthy way to sweat out the best. Could it be the end, Huh? Oh. Oh, yeah. Time for food, beer and song. How long you been doing this? Since early 74, February of 74. What's the best part? It was late. Start to finish the finish. Yeah. Feel so good when you stop. What's the best part? What's the best part of the road? Well, this is the clincher. What's the best part of run? Oh, well, that's pretty obvious, innit? Right here. Afterwards, we just want to work up a sweat. The best part is that when you have got a song for me right now. Why? So. There is no money. There's no. One oh. Three. Oh. Oh. Soaked and sticky.
