This is Eyewitness News. With Denise Koch. Vic Carter. Bad weather with Bob turn. Sports with John Buren. The snow is no longer falling. The sun finally made an appearance, but the blizzard of 1996 is still having a tremendous impact on life in our fine state. Well, we knew it was coming, but we hardly could have imagined the size of that superstorm. Where do we go from here? Well, let's hope we go up in a minute. We're going to go to Bob Turk. But for now, Eyewitness News crews have been out around the clock gathering stories for our team coverage. It was Alex to Matrix job this morning to rise before the sun and watch as people tried to dig out. Right now, as the sun sets. He is in Catonsville and he joins us live. Alex, like the typical Maryland snowstorm where only secondary streets are usually left clogged, at the end of the day, this storm landed very heavy on every street, and many of them have been left sealed off and buried under. Before dawn, the blizzard still had teeth, letting only those with traction through the rest of us stayed frozen in place. Wind turning yesterday's snowfall into drifts that not only buried cars, but buried them deep right up to the antenna. Just getting to the cars was hard enough and some people started early. It's so late and who knows when the temperature's going to change and it's going to freeze. And. It's easier to move. Of course, moving snow is easier for some than others. Even those paid to keep main roads and highways clear, advised caution. Yeah, you can move on it, but it's not that great.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208#t=2.29,114.75"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208/transcript/70090/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's not great enough to travel, and I don't think so anyway. And the main roads were about the only place you could travel. Even with four wheel drive, you get out onto the main road. You can go the main road, but you can't get off the main road and you can't park on it. It's like you don't know what to do with the vehicle when you get it out on the main road. But the main road is what people were after, so near and yet so far. And once I reached the main, I noticed 25ft. I should be in good shape. 25ft. It's not long, 25ft. And no matter how they cleared it, people were measuring the distance from one drift to the next. So much because the car, you know, plows come down and just push it. Just pile that pile that still, it's kind of heavy. I did it yesterday while the snow was soft, so I thought I'd get out of here before, you know, it gets too hard. This is the fourth time I've been out, and it was, you know, 6 or 7in each time. I don't know where it comes from. Or where it's going. Up along the Maryland Pennsylvania line. It's still moving around. Whiteouts closing the border on York Road and Interstate 83. And it should be perfectly obvious to anyone who's tried moving the snow or moving through it that it's going to be days yet before things even begin to resemble normal. Yeah, I would think so, Alex. However, since yesterday we have been putting out the call for hospitals asking for four wheel drive vehicles to get emergency personnel to and from the hospital and sometimes even patients. Do you know how that's going? Do they have enough vehicles? Yeah.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208#t=116.22,207.1"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208/transcript/70090/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, it all depends upon where those four wheel drives are in relation to the hospitals. Now, the National Guard has been doing a a big job at helping out their troop carriers and Humvees, the kind of clearance and grip to get around just about anywhere. But with so many streets drifted in, a lot of civilian four wheel drives are not moving, and even those that are getting out are still having difficulty getting into some of the neighborhoods where those hospital staff members are. The news. All right. Thank you very much, Alex. Major reporting live from Catonsville, where the snow is just as high as it is just about everywhere else. And you want to talk about digging out. We know someone who's been digging you out and just got here. Thank goodness. That's right. Ladies and gentlemen, Bob Turk. Well, how you doing? Thank you, thank you, thank you. Quite a storm. I think it was a Thursday night. And as I said, the word blizzard shuddered. Well, as it turns out, we did get a full blown blizzard with everything. All the ingredients of a blizzard. Here is the storm as it winds away and away from our region. It's still snowing across portions of southern New England. Boston area still snowing as you can see. Just circulation. A tremendous, really, a sort of a mini hurricane. We have winds of 60, 65 miles an hour along the coast with our gusts here about 50 miles an hour, which caused all that tremendous drifting for about 30 or 40 minutes. We had some sleet that strong. The storm was so strong it brought in that much warm air aloft that even with temperatures in the upper teens and mid teens, we had enough warm air with that moisture of the ocean to cause a little bit of sleep.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208#t=207.4,289.84"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208/transcript/70090/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Now this storm is exiting. However, to our west and northwest, a weak area of low pressure weak is the key word is going to head down from Ohio and Michigan tomorrow. We have a chance of getting a dusting to perhaps an inch of snow tomorrow. Just to add to your misery. A lot of clouds on tap for tomorrow. The sun this afternoon was a wonderful sight because it put in some places a little bit of a cap or a slight melting on some of the the snow to help slow down the drifting. But tomorrow, I think, I think we'll be able to get through that trace to an inch. Dennis. All right, Bob, thank you. Well, once a snowfall of this size is plowed off the roads, there is the problem of just what to do with it. Today, the Department of the environment gave its permission to begin dumping snow into the harbor. Scientists say there will be no ecological damage. The salinity of the water won't be dramatically disturbed, and they are not worried about any chemicals that might be released into the ecosystem by the dumping. Of course, it's hard for some to get too concerned about the environment when they just want to get to work tomorrow. Well, Susan O'Brien of the State Highway Administration joins us now by phone with the latest on the conditions of the major roadways. Susan, what's the situation now? Is everything open? Everything right now? All state highways are currently open, passable. And for the most part, we are reporting some hard conditions up on the top end of 795. Hopefully it'll be a light one and folks can get around. Well, what about some areas? Sometimes we ignore Harford County, Carroll County, places like that. They're a little more remote for some people. Well off the state highway. It does reach statewide from Oakland to Ocean City. We do have our crews up in Harford County working real hard also, and we have a lot of our state highways out there that are there's still snow cover, but they're getting a little bit more passable. With all the work we've been doing. We haven't been reporting any major problems up in the Harford County or the Carroll County areas. They did get hit a lot harder with snow, but we do have our plows out there and we state highway crews. I'll just be out all night attacking some of those little bit conditions, areas of those ramps and those overpasses, the bridges, everything that freezes fast as the temperatures drop throughout the night. We've got to pay particular attention to elevated surfaces. Yeah. So people driving tonight be very, very careful. Thank you. Susan Abhi from the state Highway Administration. Well, we're still where we were when you left us at 5:00, still at the Charrette International near BWI, still with a lot of folks who are trying to make the best of a bad situation here in the bar for a while. The big problem was a mad rush of folks trying to get shuttled back and forth to the airport, because no one really wanted to believe that all the airlines were shut down and the airline was completely closed. The. Sheridan was able to do that for them. However, they got to the airport, they had to come back here and face the reality that they're just not going anywhere. Welcome to Barlow Washington International Airport. Due to weather conditions, some flights are delayed. If you are picking up or dropping off someone at the terminal. We suggest parking in the garage directly in front of the terminal and checking flight information on the flight information matters and the terminal. They were lined up five deep at the US air ticket counter. But one of the wonders of TV is how it can take a little group of people and make them look like a crowd. In reality, the airport today is like a ghost town. Can't wait to get home. It's 75 degrees and sunny. Last time I called my wife. Be sure to tell your wife this. We're not used to this kind of weather either. Well, this is really some day. It's been some days and nights and stranded travelers have left the airport. Sheridan. I don't know when we're going to get out of here. We were supposed to go on a cruise, but we're not. We rescheduled itself for another time. Well, we've been here since, Saturday night, and, the food's healthy, unfortunately, but they they sent the chef over to the giant, this morning, and he got a few supplies, and. Yeah, we didn't get any deliveries in. And the giant when he got there, but he bought them out of everything they had, and, they were out of bread and everything already. But he got our necessities to feed everybody. So we make sure we have enough food for everybody for lunch and dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow. It's just amazing. I've been going out and taking pictures, and people just don't believe that. I've called home each day and told them they don't understand. Oh, that's okay. I'm going to get him to turn it down now. Okay. We're all right. Listen, we also want to let everybody know that even once the airlines are up and running tomorrow, there's no telling when these folks are going to get to their destination. Well, when we were over there, we could see some of the planes that were parked, and it looks like they're not going anywhere for a while. The plows are out. I mean, you can drive to and from the airport. There's no problem. The problem is still getting the runways cleared, getting all the personnel they need to get the planes ready to fly and then getting everybody scheduled. They're saying sometime after noon tomorrow. Okay, Pat, we'll see if that happens. When Pat says the best advice to travelers is to call the airline before you leave for BWI. Well, virtually every form of transportation is running into trouble. And all this snow trying to get to your destination today was slow, frustrating, and sometimes just impossible. Suzanne Collins says the key was to be patient or decide not to go. The light rail turned out to be one of the best bets in town. Larry Crosbie used it to get home from work. I work at the city jail. They declared a state of emergency and my car got buried in downtown. So I managed to get on the light rail. I'm just trying to get home. Even though ice was crusted on the rails, passengers were successfully picked up about every 20 minutes. I'm, interviewing, a woman who flew up from Florida for a job interview. She's at the Holiday Inn downtown. And so I can walk to the light rail. So I figured, don't make it a wasted trip for her. This is your final boarding call for this train. With the airport closed, a lot of people turned to Amtrak, and many of them from out of town had stayed longer than they expected with friends and family. Then when they got to Penn Station, they waited a little longer. Where are you going to fly? I was going to get out any way possible. You sound frustrated. Yes, yes. I'm not happy about being stuck down here all day. The MTA busses remained out of service as managers scoped out different routes, hoping one would become wide enough for busses. Most people move by four wheel drive or hitched a ride with someone who owned one, but those who didn't had to be creative. Are you getting there very quickly? Except for in the park. Yeah, the. Vic, it's not easy being a grown up when there's a blizzard. It's the kids who have all the fun in the snow. We'll have that story in a moment. But first, some people you tell us deserve a 13th salute. You. Can I get life insurance at my age, in my health? I'd like to leave my loved ones with a little something when I'm gone, but I'm afraid I'm too old to get life insurance. I don't want to burden my family with my final expenses. Where can I turn? If you're like these nice folks and thought that life insurance after 45 was impossible to get or impossible to afford, I've got good news. If you're 45 to 79 positions, life guarantees you up to $10,000 of permanent modified whole life insurance designed to help pay your burial costs and other final expenses. There's no medical exam and no health questions. You can buy this policy if you're 45 to 79 and you're insured for life. Now, just $1 pays for your first month. After that, you can continue at an affordable renewal rate that can never go up. It's so easy to get. I'm easy to afford. Now, let me tell you why this protection is so very important. All of us someday will leave behind final expenses for our loved ones to pay. There's no escaping that. Those burial costs can easily add up to thousands of dollars. You know, some people even expect the government to take care of the final expenses. But the fact is, Social Security pays a death benefit of only $255. That's not nearly enough to cover the cost of a funeral today. That's why I recommend this coverage so highly as one sure and affordable way you can help with your loved ones with dollars instead of debts.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208#t=2716.3,2847.77"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208/transcript/70090/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"For all the details, just call this toll free number. And now back to more Eyewitness News coverage. The Blizzard of 96 West and East Coast. Well, as we've been saying all along, digging out of the blizzard of 96 is not going to be an easy job. Definitely not. We go back to Rogers Forge now, where Mike shoe was standing by line without telling us how folks are standing up now. Yeah, honestly, I am actually standing by live here this time. Actually, some of the dig out toe was accomplished, by vehicles. This gentleman right here in this four wheel drive, he didn't lift a shovel one bit. He just kind of rocked his truck back and forth, went right out the side roads and everything are safe for people like this. They can get out. And if they don't act like fools, they can, you know, have a reasonably safe time going. But I have to tell you, even though it doesn't look like it is all that deep in here, it is still 6 to 8in. Which is not enough for a car, like, let's say, this Honda Civic to go out and and this person here, they shovel out all the area, but wisely, they're keeping their car put. Earlier today, I saw a person who had shovel out of spot and said, you know, I'm going to go drive around. And then it took him about a half hour to try.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208#t=2848.85,2936.07"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/135164/file/250208/transcript/70090/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And when I left, they still hadn't gotten back in to try to get back into their spot. So believe me, these roads are going to be plowed sometime. The county said they're going to start on them, starting later tonight and tomorrow. So eventually, these roads will get plowed. Until then, I know cabin fever sets in, but, you might want to stick around and stay indoors. The main roads are, wonderful. The York road, Stevenson, the Beltway, all those areas in the city are really good. And, not necessarily to to knock the city, but there is a distinct line on Charles Street, at least when I noticed coming out of the city and into the county, they seem to be using more salt. So, if you can get out of your neighborhood, it's okay out there. Okay. Mike, did you call Mike? I wonder what happened to chains. I don't have chains anymore. Well, people, a matter of fact, Jackson was talking. He put chains on his car. Did he? That's a smart thing to do it. One more news for you. Had two feet of snow. More or less. It's one of the state's heaviest snowfalls of the century. But in his commentary tonight, Michael Alaska says in some ways, life goes on as usual at the Country Farm Store Falls Road above 41st Street around noon today, there were about a dozen people, including several city firefighters, lined up at a cash register to buy basic food. They had to wait. There was only one cashier, and she was one register over, taking care of a woman who had trudged all the way through two feet of snow so she could buy handfuls of lottery tickets. I'm at 41st and Hickory Avenue. You can see behind me this street has not been plowed at all. There are a lot of streets like this all over the city and all over the county. In fact, the problem so bad in the county that the county executive is shut down government tomorrow in order to give more than 300 emergency people a chance to clear streets like this. I don't know. The biggest challenge was finding someplace to put it. We got the same problem. The city has no place to put it. And they put so much on the sidewalks here, but in the streets. And you got to move it because you got to go to work tomorrow. At first glance, it almost looks as though Ed gathers. There's chiseling a car out of snow instead of digging it out. Most vehicles are so packed in along secondary streets they look like part of the landscape. Just ask Will Childers. Well, I got the white van up there, the brown one here, and the big conversion van down there. Just digging out the white van of the day. Luckily, me and my wife only work about four blocks from each other, so we'll try to get rid of more. Many counties are also struggling with Unplowed streets. The problem is snow drifts that keep blowing 3 to 4in of snow back onto streets after they've already been plowed may not sound like much, but when you run into 2 or 3 or four inches of snow at high speed, it could affect the control of your vehicle, so it's best to take it very slow. Some of the problem that we're going to experience is that the side streets, the snow so heavy that we can't send plows down the streets. So what we're going to do is have to get front end loaders and literally dig out, put that snow into trucks and then take it out. Brenda Claiborne's getting a little help uncovering her car from a few faithful friends. Like you guys are breaking a sweat out here with us today. We've been out here for about two hours. It's definitely about a break. Yes, exactly. Yes. Now, one of the biggest problems we ran into the night. The biggest complaints we ran into were from people who had already dug their cars out. And the snowplows came along and pushed the snow back up under them. We talked to state highway officials about that. They say the best thing to do is to put that snow or to shovel that snow to the side. Don't put it in a place where a plow can get to it. Vic. Okay. Dennis. What is it? One of the biggest problems facing snow plows on the streets right now. And is this a problem that is common throughout all the counties? I think it is. This is. Rick. Okay. The nightteam's Dennis Edwards. Well, state police say snow emergency plans are in effect throughout the area. That means you must have snow tires or chains on your car, and you can't park on snow emergency routes. Many of you have been asking about the essentials like trash removal and snow cleanup. We've checked with the counties. Here are some of their answers. In Anna Rondeau County, for snow removal, you can call 2228041. There will be no trash removal until the streets are clear. In Baltimore City you call 396 snow for snow removal. No trash removal until the snow is gone. In Baltimore County, call 8873560 for snow removal questions. No trash removal tomorrow. Now in Atlanta they got less than two inches of snow and the entire city is shut down. No mail service, no schools, no nothing. The airport is open, but because of delays in the northeast, it's a mess there. And they say we're wimps. And I'm, you know, I guess that's where now that's wimpy. That's right. It's two inches.
