As of 7 a.m. this morning, anybody who crossed their picket could expect that reaction. That's because they're on strike. We have a situation in our union where prior to this we took a strike authorization vote authorizing the bargaining committee to call a strike if they see no other route. So at 7:00 this morning, that's what happened. Many of these faces are the people you talk to when you need a phone number. But did you know these operators talk to at least 1500 of you a day? That's one call every 20.9 seconds. Yolanda Bean says that kind of pressure comes from CFP management. Tell me what you want. Okay. You know, and God forbid, if we get an elderly person on the line that really doesn't know what they want and, you know, you want to help them. We want to take time and help them out. But we have to get them off that line. The company today expressed what it called extreme disappointment at the workers decision to strike and repeated its offer to return to the bargaining table. We were working with the union to formulate a final offer when they announced their decision to break off the talks. We are hopeful that we will be able to resume talks and settlement will be reached. But there is one point of agreement between the two sides and that's how the customer will be affected. But in recent years, concern about the cost of renting a booth has grown among the vendors. Andrea Koppel tells us their concern came to a head today when vendors met with city officials for three days each summer. Baltimore gets a taste of African culture. Some vendors travel from as far away as the West Coast just to sell their handiwork. Everything from African clothing to animal carvings and other crafts. But for many vendors like Roxanne Redmond, this yearly festival has lost much of its original charm and is becoming a financial strain. I've been priced out of participating in Afram and basically if you charge $400 for booth space, how much do you charge children to face paint? And Roxanne isn't the only vendor who feels the city is charging too much for a booth. It's too expensive because we don't have a dime. What cost? But the business is not great. I will leave that. We come in from all the way down to New York, spend money, you know, come pay the books you need to make more money. The city disagrees. I take that very seriously. There are very few vendors who leave here broke. They make plenty of money. That's why they keep coming back. We have more vendors this year than you've ever had before. But for a new entrepreneur like Paula Jones, who's trying to market her original potato chip cookies, the festival's high price tag almost kept her from showing up. When this festival began 18 years ago, its founder says he wanted it to highlight the best in the black community. Now, he says, the festival has become too diversified. But actually, before we get to that for part of the forecast, I'd like to go down, take a look at the tropics, because Hurricane Dean, which we have talked a little bit about prior to this, has passed over Bermuda and in fact, made landfall in Bermuda early this morning. Well, actually around mid-morning, say, 9:00 or so local time, this is our current satellite image. Cecil SB Pete struck out five allowing only six hits. Texas pitcher Kevin Brown here on ninth count. Well, he hit the chop at a shortstop. Pretty good play by Kunkel, but the UMP claims Paul Merrill never makes the tag. At first he had a closer look. And in fact, he does make the play a crucial call because Cal represents the tying run. Cal is called safe at first. And right here, Randy Milligan steps up. Same inning of Jeff Russell lofts, a fly ball that falls in base, hit tallies in a score game tied and we go into the 10th inning. Ball is kicked around but Brady Anderson holds up at third base. Now in the 10th here's Devereaux against Russell and he goes right after the two one pitch hits it far and deep to left way out of here. Home run for Mike Devereaux. The Orioles now have won three out of their last four. Chris Ely was in the Orioles locker room after the ballgame. Russell, come in the game circumstance for the starting pitcher earnest motivator and know when definitely when a pitchers is doing that well against you when when a reliever comes in. That's always good to see. I think everyone wants to go out there and and give, you know at least five six innings. You know, and that's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to go out there and at least get this sixth or seventh inning.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136069/file/252470#t=3058.3,3144.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136069/file/252470/transcript/70810/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So, you know the ball because the bullpen is putting a lot of innings in and every time we can get a start with somebody go seven, 6 or 2 thirds, seven, seven and two thirds eight, you know, it's just giving those guys a rest. All right. The real good job this afternoon for Pete Hornish today, but it was Mark Williamson recording the victory. He improves to nine and three. Meanwhile, the Red Sox beat Cleveland by the count six four. So they maintain second place all by themselves. Two and a half games back of the birds. Toronto is three games out after beating New York six five. George Bell at the plate right here for Toronto. He'll drill a sharp base at left field. Good luck here. And one of the quirks of the spanking brand new Toronto Skydome stuck in the crease. It only costs something like 250 million to build this thing. Nothing to stop. Freddy McGriff. Watch this. A rocket shot off the windows of the third deck. Freddie's 29th made A32 jays. Here's buy by Balboni and it's buy buy as and take a seat. Tom Hankey, not just another save. Now, we saw Debra's game winning home run. But talk about drama today. What about Jeff King of the Pirates? He hit one today in the 18th inning to beat the Cubs. Three two. The pirates brought out the the the rally caps after watching the Cubs Scott Sanderson pitch eight innings of shutout, all in relief. But a mistake right here to Jeff King in the 18th. He jumps on the fastball over the wall and against the concrete. The Cubs, though, still in a tie for first place because the Mets beat Montreal. The Expos plant at Shea Stadium, 14th inning.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136069/file/252470#t=3145.33,3237.64"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136069/file/252470/transcript/70810/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The Mets, Kevin McReynolds against pitcher Steve Frei. This is in the 14th. Watch him turn on the fastball and he drills it high to left. This thing goes over the Newsday sign. It's over. The Mets win in 14. They are now four games back of first place. Professional boxing. There was a world title fight in the 125 pound division. The IBF champ fellow by the name of Jorge Paez. He scored a 12 round decision over Steve Cruz. Paez says he's a big fan of Batman. I want to know who cuts this guy's hair. A close shave right here. Round to watch Cruz come with the straight right cross. And down goes Batman. But he jumps right back up. He would rally in the very next round and round three. He's going to flail away against against Cruz, both hands. And it's Batman. Jorge Paez winning the 12 round decision, retaining his featherweight title today in El Paso, Texas. Batman does it in Texas. Good sign today that interest in the National Football League is alive and well in London, England. 73,000 people jammed into Wembley Stadium to watch the Philadelphia Eagles beat Cleveland by the final count, 1713. Wonder what the Brits thought of this kind of action right here. Reggie Langhorne of Cleveland is blasted by Tom Bell. Last year, Langhorne. And was able to get up on his own feet and walk off the field. Eagles on the attack right here. Fourth quarter. Don McPherson guy out of Syracuse right works the corner. Nice catch by Gizmo Williams gizmo with a touchdown out gizmo with the 360 They guess doing the job today at Wembley Stadium. The Eagles win it by four. They have one of the one terrific young player by the name of Derry City. He is rated the top 12 and under play in his home city of Jerusalem. But he is spending this summer taking part in a tennis camp at Townsend State tomorrow night at six. I'll have the story on Daddy, including the reason as to why he's enjoyed some success playing tennis. All right. And for professional golfer, he's had a lot of success. John Mahaffey, the drought is all over. He shot 65 in the final round today in Memphis to win the St Jude Classic. For Mahaffey, his first win in the PGA Tour in over three years. Great putt right here at 14 from 30ft away. This thing goes in the cup front door. He finishes right there at 11 under. Then just a few holes later at 17, this time from 40ft. And he drills this one. Dead center that moved him at 12 under. He wins the tournament today in Memphis by three shots. John Mahaffey takes home first prize. Bob Gilder finished off in second place. And the Minnesota Twins invade tomorrow against the O's. Okay. Good rally. Yeah. See you guys later. Thanks, Paul. All right. Finally tonight, a Baltimore doctor received a new title, one that will stick with him always. Dr. Hamilton, Moses became an honorary colonel of the Fort McHenry Guard at a tattoo ceremony. Tattoo is a program of martial music and special drill drill routines. They don't actually tattoo you there tonight. The US Navy band, the Guard drill team and the color guard joined in the tattoo performance. Tonight's honoree is the vice president for medical affairs at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
