And everyone want to know how many people want to try out for a movie part in Baltimore? We'll be researching that question as the Replacements filming gets underway. All coming up next on Jay-Z Eyewitness News. Live from WJC and her team. You've got Baltimore's leader of news team now. I wish. You. Okay? They're giving you motions. But I tell you, I don't know what was on me or you, but if they would be all right, I'll be able to figure it out. Hello again. I'm Don Scott, in for Katie with him. And I'm Tim Williams. Good to see you this morning. Be gentle with me. I I'm sure you have this down by now. Not for this side of the desk and not this day of the week. It's kind of like using the bathroom in somebody else's house. Good analogy. The plumbing is the same, but it's a whole lot different. Feel is just a little bit different. Well, good to have you. It is going to be an easy morning, a little dreary out, a little slow start to the day. Did it rain? Yeah. Well, we are talking about just about 1.6in a BWI, about 1.3in at the Science Center overnight. And that's about all we've gotten so far. Places like Trenton, New Jersey, got four inches in three hours. Wow. Overnight. Yeah, some at some point yesterday. We just seem to be in this no storm zone. Can't seem to get any Can't seem to buy any. Take a look outside. We show you what we're talking about. It is a great start to what will be a dreary day. We are calling for rain and the system is moving into the area. It's going to slow down. We are expecting to see some severe weather out of this before it's all over with, possibly tonight. This afternoon, actually, any time this afternoon, they could really fire up. If any sun comes out, it will just further destabilize what's going on out there, heat it up, and we could see some real hefty thunderstorms out of this. Right now, though, 74 degrees on TV here. We're looking at just about 78 in downtown Baltimore. You can see the storms, the more recent storms moving on by Ocean City. Thank you. But first, before Tim comes back, here's what people are talking about this morning. A Baltimore Highlands woman is clinging to life at this hour and at least one other person is also recovering from injuries after an early morning house fire. Neighbors on Norfolk Street tell Eyewitness News they heard explosions and saw this house go up in flames. Firefighters arrived on the scene about 130 this morning and found an elderly person trapped inside. The fire captain on the scene tells Eyewitness News Louise Miles was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she is being treated at this hour. A second person who, Miles, was transported to Harbor Hospital Center with minor injury. No word yet on what caused that fire. Hundreds of people gathered to watch a US senator's home burned to the ground. Check out this spectacular video. It happened in an exclusive area called Isle of Palms in South Carolina. We don't we have a lot of really expensive property over here. We don't have a lot of fires. This is the biggest fire I've been to. But amazingly, nobody was hurt in all that. And no word this morning on what started the fires. At least six other homes were also damaged. One of the homes damaged belongs to NASCAR driver Kyle Petty. But he was not home when the fire broke out. We know the drought emergency we're under increases the chance for fires tremendously. Investigators are assessing the damage this morning after a huge brush fire on the eastern shore. Now, the fire broke out early yesterday morning in the 5900 block of Newhart Mill Road. The Department of Natural Resources tells Eyewitness News that more than 20 acres burned and the total could reach 50 acres or more. Firefighters are using pond and creek water to fight the flames. So far, investigators are not saying how this fire started. Eyewitness News First warning weather has been showing you how the drought has brought dry conditions to the area. State officials use the Keach Biram drought index to measure fight danger or fight fire danger, rather. The index has a range of about 0 to 800. And as you can see, most of the Baltimore area by this graphic is very high on the scale. And Arundel County is at 616 on a scale of 800. Baltimore County is at 600. Carroll County, 531. Harford County, 530. Howard County. 520. These numbers are rising as the drought progresses and indicate dangerous conditions for forest fires. It's still difficult to tell what went on behind this door. At 546 Main Street in Dundalk. Authorities have discovered a cycle of abuse, abuse that may have trickled down to the children and may have caused an infant's death. We have learned that indeed, there were fights in the house. The father beat the mother, and in the course of that, the mother was sometimes holding her children, and one or more of the children were struck. July 18th, four month old Tremaine Robertson died here. Autopsies revealed a skull fracture. According to this police statement, the infant's 14 year old brother said he accidentally knee the boy in the head. Initially, authorities believe that could have caused the stress fracture. But this statement goes on to say the investigation proved that the skull fracture happened some day before the boy's accident. That's when authorities removed all children from the home and that's when they discovered the infant surviving twin sister also had a skull fracture. Both parents are charged with two counts of child abuse. Murder charges are pending if autopsies determine the fracture caused the death. A family, friend and neighbor has determined this isn't murder at all. She says it's a misunderstanding. But two months later, and after a lot of review by these eyes, we see no criminal act that took place in Baltimore County. How could that be? Early on, the state police said that the driver incorrectly loaded his truck in the excavator, hit the bridge, knocking it to the ground, killing one, injuring three. He took a chance. For someone else's life, basically. Well, I think they should do something. I mean, what they can do. But he definitely broke the law. Seems to just regular folks that he did something criminally wrong to cause the deaths of those people. Because because there has to be gross negligence. Someone's conduct has to be reckless and wanton to be gross negligence because someone may be careless does not mean that that someone is guilty of criminal liability. Had the driver been high on drugs or drunk or driving recklessly, that's gross negligence. And if it's there even close, I will go with it. But this is just not there. It's not even close. No, not even close. Now, with the county's decision, the state police can file misdemeanor traffic charges. How many vaccinations do children need to get into school these days? You know, it's really interesting. But if you take them all and they repeat doses, it's probably about 20 or 21. No, that's a heck of a lot. Yeah, well, they're not all this. They're a number repeats just to make sure that you're vaccinated. But when I was a kid, we only had about two tetanus and diphtheria and smallpox as three. We didn't have measles chickenpox right there. And I had all of that. Had everything, Sure. But nowadays the kids can be immunized against really all childhood diseases. Can you name a few? What kind of vaccination? We're talking about measles, German measles, chickenpox, whooping cough, all of those which are the common childhood diseases. Mumps, of course, is a bad one. And I had all of this stuff and kids today don't have to have it. The real problem comes for some reason. Some people think that they're dangerous or that it always comes up it does, or that they cause other problems or that they don't work. And this really isn't true. They work 99.9% of the time. They're very rarely dangerous. And it's really a crime not to give kids the opportunity to avoid these diseases. There are side effects, though. Some of them would have a sore arm, obviously. Yeah, but big deal. I'd rather have that and I would. A big case of mumps. Are there other side effects besides the well? So if you're going to be honest, there can be. I mean, you can have 1 in 1,000,000 really bad complications, but that's rare compared to the number of complications from having the disease. So kids really ought to get it. I told you I switched the last call to lower my cholesterol along with a diet. My doctor and I are pleased with the results. But I forgot to tell you that last call hasn't been shown to prevent heart attacks or stroke. Like some other cholesterol lowering drugs. I also told you the last call could save you a lot of money. It did for me, but not for some of my friends. Turned out they needed extra doctor's visits and lab tests. A couple needed higher, more costly doses of last call so they didn't save as much as I did. Less call is not for everyone. It should not be taken by people with liver disease or possible liver problems. Women who are nursing pregnant or may become pregnant. Like other cholesterol lowering drugs, less cold can cause liver problems. Your doctor will deliver tests before and during less call therapy. Tell your doctor about any muscle pain or weakness because there could be signs of serious side effects. You know, I had some questions about last call, so I talked to my doctor. Don Samuels is here from Brown's Bakery. Thank you so much for being here. And we're talking about Jamaican cuisine this morning and is here to cook a Caribbean favorite and certainly a favorite of mine, jerk chicken. And she's going to be here and kind of explain what's going on. I have tried so many recipes to do this. I've never quite gotten it right. And I think, you know, everybody in my house is tired of being a guinea pig. So tell me how to do this. Right? Okay. You get your chicken, you're perfect. You wash it, I take the skin off. Okay. So eliminate the fat skinless. Okay. Right. And then wash it with some lime juice and during the chicken. Okay, Well, that's one thing I already did. Lime juice. Lime juice. Okay, Good enough. Right. So. And I use some granulated garlic. Okay. Granulated garlic. Okay, Hold this a little bit. This way. We kind of get a feel for what's going on. Okay, So. And you. I see you have. It doesn't matter what portion of the chicken you use. Obviously, whatever you taste what you like. Okay, good enough. The granulated garlic and you just kind of pretty much just covered it. Right. So I'm using great start seasoning. Okay. So that's one of the better. That's a little different than what I've used. It looks like it's a little spicy. Yeah. Okay. So how much do you put in here? Just because it is jerk doesn't mean it has to be. So how? It don't have to be very high tea cam. I got it. More seasoned. You use is a more spicy taste. Got you. Okay. So then I would go. I had plastic gloves and I would imagine that's important, too. You're talking about seasonings this spicy. You don't want to use your hands. You don't want to touch it. Touching your eyes or your mouth or your face and very spicy. Okay. Okay. So you. You go ahead and you mix it thoroughly and you rub it the whole bit. What I generally do, let it marinate for maybe a couple hours or overnight. Okay. And then it's best grill on the charcoal grill, but you can put it on your regular electric grill. Okay. All right, Brenda, kind of depends on what you have. And after you do that and you grill it, just make sure we always use all the meat. I'm always at 350 now, I think. Okay, then you have this. This is a finished the finished product. Okay. And and jerky for those who have never really had it or seen it. Hello, everybody. I'm Pat Warren. And here's what people are talking about tonight. Relief in the form of a soaking rain that most of us saw way before we felt it. Dr. Bob joins us live in the weather center to tell us how much more we can expect. Hi, Bob. Hey, Pat. Well, we still are under threat of thunderstorms here in the Baltimore area, although this first line has indeed moved on through and is now threatening the eastern shore. Let me show you a first warning, Radar. We've got to zoom in to the area down pretty much from east and down across the bay. You can see this line, especially right here. That's the area of strongest thunderstorms in the state of Maryland right now. This is Tilmon Island. So you folks perhaps in Tilghman Island off into Oxford. You're going to be under the gun for a short period of time here. South of D.C. also, there's thunderstorms occurring there. Let me zoom out to the wider scan because you can see further to the north, there are still a few showers that are going to be threatening us for the rest of this evening. So for tonight, we still have a severe thunderstorm watch and it will remain in effect till 8 p.m.. Then after that, there'll be enough moisture around to give us some showers and fog. Our overnight lows going to be 73. We can feel the cooling coming as a result of the rain. But we'll come back in a few minutes and show you a little bit more of the bigger picture and talk about how much rain did indeed fall. Thanks, Bob. We'll see you in a little bit. There's a price to pay for this rain relief and bhg customers are sweating it out tonight. We go live to East Baltimore where you can, too, Miguel. He has been talking to people who lost power and have experienced some other storm damage. How you can I pad It was quick. It was heavy and it hit hard. Right now, about 27,000 people are out of power right now. And I am in one of those areas. I'm in East Baltimore right on Monument Street, where the street light down here, you can see is out of power. And let me show you why they're out of power. Look at this electric pole right here. Crews just finished working on it about five minutes ago, but apparently the power line caught fire after it was hit by lightning. And neighbors say when it happened, they saw a big ball of orange and brown smoke and a big explosion. What did it sound like? It was blow boom. It was real big. And when we came out here, it was a whole bunch of smoke coming out. The brown. The brown? Yeah. Trees. Really? So it's a wire that started the trees on fire? Yes, it was real big. We we was watching a movie, Men in Black. So we we couldn't see that. And, of course, their movie went out because they were out of power. The storm packed one punch. It did. There were numerous unfounded reports of lightning strikes on houses. Heavy rains and heavy winds dealt a blow throughout the metropolitan area on Falls Road. And we also have reports from all of our Anna Rondeau County in Pasadena, where apparently trees have been knocked down, trees have been uprooted, and one tree apparently went through a man's house right into his bedroom while he was in there. Of course, we'll have that for you at 11:00, Pat. It's like a domino effect. Now you can go. Yeah. Thanks. We'll hear a little bit more from you tonight at 11. Now, let's shed a little more light on that power problem. Bogey reports 27,600 customers without power at the height of the storm. And here's the breakdown on your screen. Baltimore County had the highest number with 11,300. Next comes the city with 9800 smaller numbers of people. In Carroll County, Anne Arundel County, Harford and Howard counties are also affected. Most of the problems are caused by downed wires and everything should be solved by this evening. Troubles aside, this pouring rain is like a breath of fresh air for us and it has park rangers breathing a sigh of relief. There's nothing like a drought disaster to light a fire under the people who helped prevent our woodlands from burning up. Tim Williams paid a visit to the campgrounds that perhaps go State Park. Michael Petrone has been camping for three decades. He knows the safety rules when building a campfire in the forest. I've been camping for over 30 years. I'm quite familiar with how you react. You know, due to a drought. In this Eastern Shore brushfire captured by Sky chopper, 1350 acres burned. It's the latest in a season of blazes that could take a turn for the worse. September. Extremely dry branches, tree roots and dirt magnified by excessive sunshine and heat are all reasons. There are double the amount of forest fires this year over last. Nearly 600 already the majority of the fires in Maryland are caused by people's carelessness. So that's one of the reasons this burning ban is in effect so that people really take more notice of the problem. The ban calls for no open burning except in a fire ring or grill and no leaves or sticks within ten feet of any campfire. Cigaret butts should be tossed into the grill. You throw them out there in the woods. You start a major fire. And I like my words and I've been coming here for years. So you can't do that. The only moisture these dried leaves and trees have seen is the humidity, which has been a little higher than usual. So the stickiness, ironically, that everyone is complaining about has been the only saving grace for the forest. Alito's younger brother, who also works for the Postal Service, said the most frightening thing he ever expected to face was being chased by a dog. And many feel that a mad dog is an appropriate description for Buford Furrow, who said that a letter was a good target of opportunity because he was a minority who worked for the government, for his grandmother, blames his friends, was a bunch of devils, and he was running with all that stuff in his mind. Yeah. Actually, we are playing with our camera up on the tower there, looking out toward the east where the showers are. And we picked up a rainbow out there. Let's go ahead and start with that. Let's put a nice little spin on the back there. Is it still there? Just. You can barely see. Yeah, but actually, the rain has moved off to the east. And with the sun coming out here in Baltimore, that back lights the rain and that's what produces the rainbow. And we hope it gets a little bit brighter. But here's a real vivid color picture for you, showing where those showers are right now. Running from Dover, Delaware, on a line down through east and right now across Tillman Island. This is Tillman Island right here. So Oxford, it's raining like crazy down there, Tillman Island across the bay and in the suburbs of DC, Alexandria and down to the southern part of Maryland here. Some heavy thunderstorms all across the area. Let's go and look at the satellite view to show you how this is all evolved. Note also a couple of showers still to the west of us. I think the main thrust of the thunderstorms have passed us in Baltimore. We could still see a shower, but the heavy line has gone. Watch how these things blossom on the last frame with the satellite view here. There they are. And in fact, as they move off to the east, this satellite views about 30 minutes old right now. These have moved over to the eastern shore. We'll see some breaks in the clouds and we're starting to see that a bit here and in central Maryland. And that'll be a nice break because today we did indeed get over 90 degrees. 92 degrees. Our unofficial highs so far, 72. The overnight low in 86, 66 would be normal. So far as precipitation goes right now, the airport has come in with a report of 80 707 inch of rain. That's a pretty nice good bit of rain. The downtown Science Center has almost an inch and a half of rain. So some of you folks got pretty good downpours out of this. And that will help, although we've got a long way to go to break the back of the drought. Something like that really is a big help. Northwest winds expected on the bay in the aftermath of this front tomorrow, 8 to 18 knots. One foot chop Thomas point light coming in with 81 degrees for the water temperature. Here is the national radar showing this line of thunderstorms coming across the area here. And you notice how it's a part of a very extended region, a frontal system that has moved through the area as well as moving through the area right now. And that's going to change the air mass, dry us out, get rid of the humidity we've been dealing with for the last few days. But one thing it looks like it's going to happen is this front, as it pushes through is going to slow down. I think we'll still have clouds during the day or during the early part of the day tomorrow. And it kind of holds that potential for some showers to still occur during the overnight hours and into the early part of Sunday. Eventually, though, and I think we'll see this by later in the day tomorrow, drier air will be moving on into the region and certainly cooler. I mean, we've been over 90 degrees for the last few days with very humid conditions. This will be a real change for the pleasant a real transition back into cooler temperatures. Another system out here brings us a chance of showers a little bit later on in the five day period. So tomorrow, ten degrees or so cooler than today and humidities considerably less than they are today. But for tonight, we've still got the excitement going on. We've got a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 8 p.m., although as I indicated, I think pretty much for Baltimore, the heavy thunderstorms are past you. Folks over on the eastern shore and down to southern Maryland are the ones that are really, I think, going to be dealing with these thunderstorms. But it'll be wet enough, cloudy enough that showers and some fog will be around later on tonight. 73, the overnight low and tomorrow, nowhere near as hot and humid as today. But there'll be some clouds around during certainly the early part of the day. A few showers possible with that slow moving front. Tomorrow high, tomorrow's high, 82 degrees. And for Monday, we'll see the temperature begin to ratchet back up a bit with some partly sunny conditions. Lots of sunshine. Tuesday, humidity returns Wednesday and Thursday. I mean, it was a mixed blessing in the sense we needed the rain so desperately in some places. Got quite a bit well over an inch of rain in some of those downpours. But a lot of damage is also associated with that. Let me show you where things are right now. First warning, radar has showers over on the eastern shore. Quite a bit of shower activity over there. You can see down through, say, Delaware, down through the Salisbury Cambridge area. But also a little bit of just south of Annapolis, down through Pasadena in this area, down in into Rundle County, we have developed another area of showers, in fact, some thunderstorms down there. We'll focus in on that. Take a closer look because again, there is the potential. This is really where the strongest showers are occurring right now. And the frontal system just isn't moving very fast. So we expect to see the potential for some showers in some areas during the rest of the overnight period. I think the heaviest showers, with the exception of those thunderstorms in Anne Arundel County. And I don't think they're going to be anywhere near as bad as the ones we saw earlier. Things are slowly winding down. But when you wake up tomorrow morning, here's what you're going to be looking at. Pat, what happened next was dangerous lightning bolts, many reports of it striking homes, then power outages, swirling winds and well, just look for yourself. In 2003 via 1700 North Bruce Street, 333 Westwood Avenue. The strike. Packed a powerful punch. It was boom, boom. It was real big. And when we came out here, it was a whole bunch of smoke coming out.
