It is being called a slaughter of the innocents. 16 children and one teacher massacred in a school gymnasium. And it happened today in a quiet town in one of the quietest countries in the world. The country is Scotland, the town, Dunblane. And what people found. Police found in at school gymnasium can only be described as carnage. This is a picture of the first grade class that was in the gym when a man entered and opened fire. 16 of the 29 children and their teacher died. More than a dozen other children were injured, some critically. Vicki Maybury has more on the shock and horror in Dunblane. There was relief for the parents of some Dunblane Primary School students. Their children were safe. Others received the worst news a parent can ever hear that their child had been killed. For those students able to walk away, there was fear and confusion. We heard these gunshots in the gym. We looked and saw, oh, we must be a target or something. Then curious reflections start flying over hearts and got real petrified. Just go ahead. Concerned townspeople raced to Dunblane Primary as soon as word of the shootings became known. Shortly after 930 this morning, 430 Eastern Time, 43 year old Thomas Hamilton, a loner from a nearby town, entered the school's gymnasium carrying four handguns. He reportedly attempted to take the class hostage. A few minutes later, Hamilton opened fire on the five and six year olds inside. Suzanne Collins reports live now from city police headquarters. The baby was last seen in the care of a 15 year old girl. Now both have disappeared. Suzanne. Well, Vic, the girl that they're looking for who is said to have taken this two month old. Her name is 15 year old Shamika Fisher. And it's interesting because this is not the first time that she has been a suspect in a child abduction. Apparently, about a year ago, a nine year old was missing, but they both came back safely and she had been for several days with Shamika and the girl was charged. But this is a tiny infant and there's great concern for Tarrant's status. Welfare. Also in Healthwatch, there's new relief for the millions of Americans who suffer through the pain of canker sores. A new freeze dried treatment may help heal the mouth sores faster and with less pain. The mission records Janet Plager gets canker sores a lot. She says the pain can last for ten days. Every time. I'm. You look your lips or drink anything. Eat anything. It's like rubbing salt in it. So it's it's just constantly irritating it. I know it's very painful, but it doesn't have to be thanks to a new treatment. So this is the new material? It's an aloe vera extract called ace, man and hydrogel, which kills the pain and heals the sore. Serves as a bandage over the canker sores, and that keeps it comfortable so patients find that their comfort level increases tremendously. But also it accelerates the healing process with a dry hand in place. Cheerio. Right on them, please. The freeze dried hydrogel dissolves in about an hour and last another two hours. It works by creating a protective coating over the sore and a moist environment for healing. I like the way it stayed on it. It really did last for a lot longer than the gels usually do. It reduced the pain almost immediately.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136413/file/253004#t=1296.39,1402.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136413/file/253004/transcript/71249/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The hydro gel helps canker sores heal in six days versus the standard ten. Well, it could happen because we may have some legislators who put through this change that are going to load our mailbox with more of these claims. We're just it's if you think we got mail before, just wait. Much of the mail we are going to be getting is going to be telling you how lucky you are to have won something. The protections now on the books may soon be a thing of the past. The mail brings the prize certificate. Maybe you want a dream vacation days away free of charge. Or maybe there's that car you've long admired but couldn't afford. Well, you've won it. Even a free VCR or TV or other appliance isn't bad if it's not going to cost you anything. Just come into our office and pick up your prize. The problem, of course, was that trusting consumers would show up only to be told that they now have to sit through some two hour sales pitch on timeshares or resort communities, or some kind of buying club. You see, they hadn't really won anything, but it's simply been duped into showing up. So Marilyn decided to put some pretty tough laws on the books to deal with these kinds of deceptive practices. Some of the strongest prohibitions say that if you are told that you have won some prize, you may not be required to purchase any goods or services, pay any money, or submit to a sales promotion in order to collect that prize. In short, prize means free, no strings attached. You pick up your winnings and leave, but a bill is now pending in Annapolis that would strike those protections from the law. Well, as we said in the very beginning, since everyone is probably receiving one of those letters anyway, even when the law was there, has it really been working? What's the point? Well, what it's done is allowed the attorney general so far to bring the test cases to the companies that really flagrantly violate it. You know, you have just one, you know, seven Cadillacs and, a large screen TV. The AG has gone after them and has prosecuted. It's not going to stop all of them. But I'll tell you, Maryland's law has been a model for other states. And if Maryland's law goes down in smoke, other states may may do the same. So it's a good it's a good bargaining piece to keep, you know, the attorney general can call up and say, you know, you shouldn't be doing that. Stop it. So it doesn't stop all of it. And as it does, you know, clash with some warm and increasingly moist air over the middle Mississippi Valley. That means we have a chance of picking up some clouds and rain activity for a couple of hours at least. I think on Friday. Then it's going to cool down for Saturday, but it should be dry on Saturday. That's the good news. Bad news is by Sunday, a low pressure that's still yet to develop and it's still growing. It's got some moisture with it. In fact, it had some violent weather over portions of and some funnel clouds of Arizona and some snow in the higher elevations around Flagstaff, 7 or 8in that low is predicted to move very slowly, still out to the east, and it should be by Sunday just over West Virginia, which we well should be still in somewhat of a southeast flow with moist air. So look for some rain to break up on Sunday and continue probably into at least portion of Monday. The way it looks right now this high, it's over. Snow will be migrating out to east, allowing the cool front to come through. It is quiet and it is out of the way, but this pond drew police divers looking for some sign of Alisha Reynolds. Stores closed and thousands of people lost their jobs. As the once thriving chain was buried under a mountain of debts. Now we have a federal bankruptcy trustee, Deborah Devane, who's overseeing liquidation of the company's assets, laying some of the blame on Crystal, saying he caused merry go round millions by making unrealistic projections, by failing to prepare for the sale of assets and by leaving the company in disarray. And then tomorrow increasing clouds in the afternoon. Very mild day, but southwest to west. Winds 8 to 16, a high of 65. Maybe some places will get to 70. That would be nice. Low 40 to 45 tomorrow night. I'm trying to remember. Try to check back the record to see the last time we hit 70 degrees. It's been a while. We had 70. You just might get that case. I don't know, by you. My promises. Please. Yeah. All right. Bob, the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus is in town. And this morning, circus animals paraded through the streets of downtown Baltimore. Ron Matz was there for the walk on the wild side. Let's see the elephants. The sidewalks filled up early. The kids could hardly wait. Everyone wanted the best view. The circus is in town. What are you going to see today? I love it. Are they your favorite? Yeah. All of the horses were first off the train. The elephants weren't far behind. I called my sister up this morning and told her the circus is coming to town. That I don't take the baby to the sitter. Can I take him to see the elephants? She's a big fan and fan of elephants. The pachyderm posse soon made its presence felt.
