Tonight, the death toll from that crash has been fixed at 145. And this just handed to me, it's just breaking now, ventriloquist Edward Bergen. died today in his Las Vegas hotel room. Apparently of natural causes, the 75 -year -old entertainer who supplied the voice of Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snird was playing the final engagement at the Nevada hotel. He had announced he was retiring from show business after 56 years because of failing health just last week. Tonight, thousands of mortars continue to pay their respects to Pope John Paul I. Thousands filed past the body of the Pontiff overnight. Then the doors to the Vatican were closed for a short time. 6 ,000 people waited in the square then until the doors opened again and they could file in. The pope died of a heart attack early Friday. A reaction to his death has come from around the world. Here in Baltimore tonight, Instanti and I attended a requiem mass for Pope John Paul I at the Cathedral of Mary, Our Queen. The mass was heavily attended, showing the new pope had quickly built up a following among local parishioners. Masses all over the area this weekend are to be said in honor of the late pope by order of Archbishop William Borders, who today celebrated this particular mass, saying the surprise death stunned and saddened him.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=206.41,292.93
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/11
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=297.81,305.79
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/12
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=307.88,310.3
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/13
Speaker 5: to work together, to reach out, to bring about unity among Christians and people, and truly he motivated us to pull.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=312.78,327.22
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/14
Speaker 2: The Archbishop went on to say even the Pope did not choose when he should die, it was a godly decision. Russian Premier Leonid Brezhnev called the death of the pontiff a profound loss for men who love peace all around the world. In communist Cuba tonight Fidel Castro has ordered a three -day period of mourning and said that while his communist state is an atheist state. the loss of such a good man could not be ignored. Tonight, the intricate process of selecting a new pope has begun. Tonight, members of the College of Cardinals have started to make plans for a papal election. Under church rules, the conclave of cardinals must convene by October the 18th at the latest. There were between 15 and 20 cardinals in Rome at the time of Pope John Paul's death. They have already met to make funeral arrangements. The funeral will be held this Wednesday. But the process of selecting a new pope goes on. Sergio Perandoli, a Vatican diplomat, is a leading candidate. So is Sebastiano Baggio. He was considered before. Noted theologian Paolo Bertelli is also a front runner, as is Cardinal Franz Koenig of Austria and two other non -Italians, Dutch ecumenical leader, Johann Wildebrand, and Argentinian, Eduardo Cardinal Peronio. So tonight, the search for a new man to wear the ring of St. Peter begins again. It was 34 days ago that Alvino Cardinal Luciani became Pope John Paul the first. Soon a new man will wear the shoes of the fisherman.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=328.54,421.22
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/15
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=548.52,549.52
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/16
Speaker 2: Tonight, railroad workers here and in 42 other states are back on the job after a four -day walkout that all but crippled nationwide rail service. The Panthers remain unbeaten, but the Tar Heels of Carolina were tough, even with their regular quarterback Matt Kupek out with an injury. As you can see, the Pitt players a little bit happy after Jacobs' third TD of the game. While a lot of the big schools around the country were playing, there also was action this afternoon at Homewood Field. Johns Hopkins going up against Franklin and Marshall. The Blue Jays got on the board first but ended up losing 24 -15. Denny Cox's crew now drops to one and two. Tied at the half at seven and after three nodded at 15. Texas, Texas tech tonight. Houston, Florida State, same story. And Georgia, South Carolina tonight. The Colts have a very important win tomorrow at the stadium. They take on the vastly improved Philadelphia Eagles, a team that provides a lot of problems for the Colts. One of the problems is Harold Carmichael, number 17 of the Eagles, a 6 '8 wide receiver. The eighth year man from Southern University, the favorite target of quarterback Ron Jaworski. He's caught passes in 84 straight games. And as you'd expect, most defensive backs are at a huge height disadvantage against Carmichael.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=809.0,1065.44
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/27
Speaker 11: Eddie Kayak told me a story that he was rejected from the army because he was 6 '8 and a quarter and that's a little tough when you've got a guy covering and I'm only 5 '11, but I played against him once before when I was a rookie and it proved pretty tough then, but I think the experience that I have will compensate for the size difference.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=1067.21,1087.91
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/28
Speaker 10: Norm Thompson's one guy who's played Carmichael many times when he was with the Eagles. Barometer 30 .18 inches, and it's starting to fall. And perhaps you are out today as these folks down at Locust Point, maybe catching some fish. Let's see if we can get something. Perhaps they were catching bass. Yes, got one right up. Okay, nice day to be fishing, but you're gonna have some rain by tomorrow. Let's take a look at our map tonight, and I'll show you why we're gonna have some rain. A funnel system out to our west, as you can see, from west Texas, eastward to about Illinois, then north to the low -precious system center over parts of northern Michigan and the Great Lakes. Clouds, showers over the central part of the United States and the Midwest, moving in our direction, and we're just beginning to see those clouds right now moving into our region. So it looks like we'll have increasing clouds all night and a chance of some showers as that funnel system moves further east during the day tomorrow, and eventually Thank you very much, everybody. The whole front will move off the coast and clear things out so by tomorrow night it looks like a very nice evening and the first part of next week also looks great. Sixty -five Boston this afternoon, only forty -eight in Greenville, Maine, seventy -one in Buffalo. Behind the front, sixties and some fifties, but that will warm quite a bit before it gets through our region. Looks like it's not going to be quite as cold, a cold front, as the last couple that have moved through. Tomorrow we'll have a storm system, one of them pretty close, over parts of Pennsylvania, another one up over eastern Quebec and Ontario region. extending the frontal system right through the Maryland area so we have clouds on the horizon and they're moving in and there's symbol for rain because it looks like we'll see some but clearing with this higher pressure system as it begins to move in by tomorrow night and a nice day coming up on Monday. Another frontal system out here this front promises to maybe bring us a shower but not until a little later next week we won't even worry about that right now. Around the state now we have increasing clouds coming in from the west sixty -seven in Hagerstown 65 Frederick, 62 Westminster, 67 Waldorf. 68 Salisbury, 68 Dover, tomorrow's wins. They'll start out of the south from 10 to 15 and then they'll shift as the front moves through 10 to 15 during the afternoon. One year ago today, yes. Take you back, doesn't it take you back? Sunny, a high of 80 and a rather cool morning low of 51 degrees. Let's take a look at our forecast for tonight. For tonight, folks, we have absolutely nothing. That's right. A lot of clouds beginning to move in and for tomorrow we've got clouds. some showers likely for about six hours i think will have rain seventy three degrees seventy four with sun on monday seventy nine as things warm up by tuesday and wednesday that next front should begin to move in around seventy eight degrees on wednesday maybe shower thursday a nice pleasant sunny seventy degrees so uh... some nice days coming up but uh... we have one day of showers especially uh... tomorrow morning and early afternoon don don't let it worry you We'll be here working anyway.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=1312.32,1506.02
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/41
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=1506.73,1508.57
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/42
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=1509.35,1511.61
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/43
Speaker 2: They certainly have. Bob Terp. Right, Don, I'd like to thank the folks from the Butcher's Hill Association sending me this smock which I certainly need because I'm the big slob in the kitchen. Apron, smock, whatever. Smock, apron. They're having a house tour tomorrow in Butcher's Hill. It begins at one o 'clock in the afternoon. Butcher's Hill area is about 2100 block East Baltimore Street. That's where you can start and there's quite a few homes going to be a lot of fun. Tomorrow. One o 'clock in the afternoon. Thank you very much, folks. I'll use this. I really will. Looking at the weather for tomorrow, not real, real promising. But if you're going around, take it on, brother, if it looks like you might need one. Right now, under increasingly cloudy skies, we're at 60 degrees. That 16 degrees Celsius humidity, 75%. So it's gone up. East -southeast winds at 5. Barometer hasn't changed much, 30 .18 inches. Right now, it's steady. But it should start to fall in the next couple of hours. and uh... That was not our pollen count. Unfortunately, we don't have a pollen count today. That's our last pollen count from Friday. So get rid of it. All right, here's our satellite tonight. A lot of clouds down to the south. And here's the real culprit. This funnel system out to the west. Clouderness and some, you can see it's kind of a thin line but there's showers and thunderstorms. This front is moving to the east. Some of this cloud activity here in the south is also moving in our direction. So there's a real good chance, a better than 50 % chance, that we will see rain, showers, maybe a thunder shower tomorrow. as the frontal system as you can see right here begins to bear down on our region amounts of rain along this front anywhere from a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch so we might pick up a half an inch of rain during the day tomorrow as the front begins to slide east uh... once it does behind it some nice weather begins to move in by tomorrow night clearing temperatures today were in the mid sixties upper sixties over much of the great lakes with slightly cooler air coming in behind this front we had over much of the East today. Except up in northern Maine, they remained in the upper 40s and some low 50s. Boston 65, 68 with rain in Cincinnati, and way behind this front there's a lot of fair weather, except there's another frontal system which is pretty far away, but this front will start to move and by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week might give us another shower. Hot spot today, Palm Springs, California, 109 degrees, and that's a record. They've had some extremely warm temperatures in the southwest desert for the last two weeks. Tomorrow's map. Well, that frontal system and also this little storm system will be right about through the Maryland area, as you can see right here. And as the front moves in this vicinity, the clouds will increase overnight and looks like we'll see rain. I'd say here about a little before noon and lasting most of the afternoon on and off. But fair weather, at least an area of fair weather, will start to move into tomorrow night, slightly cooler temperatures. There's that front by tomorrow. We'll be all the way east to the eastern Dakotas and then progressing a little further east as the week goes on. Around the state right now, temperatures range mostly through the upper 50s into the low 60 range. 56 Dover and Salisbury, 59 Pikesville, 62 Harrisburg, 59 Frederick, 57 Hagerstown, 62 and Waldorf. Southerly winds first tomorrow, and then when the front goes through, they'll shift to the north. 10 to 15, 1 to 2 foot waves. And one year ago today, well, it was a sunny day, just like today, but not quite as warm. Today we only had 74. 80 a year ago, low of 51. Let's take a look at our forecast for the remainder of tonight increasing clouds and we might even see a shower early tomorrow morning and then tomorrow clouds seventy three degrees some showers seventy four and clearing on monday and tuesday two nice days warming up to seventy nine seventy eight maybe a shower on wednesday and seventy on thursday with a lot of sunshine so uh... that's the way it looks for the next five days get out of here i'll be all right
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=2534.03,2758.78
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/94
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=2759.6,2760.5
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/95
Speaker 13: Well, we need some rain, we really do, things are kind of dry right now.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200#t=2761.13,2763.43
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144416/file/267200/transcript/77118/annotation/96
Speaker 2: So you say. Now Yankee win tomorrow and they will win the division. Should the Yankees lose and Boston win, there would be a one game playoff on Monday. Meanwhile, the Phillies won the National League East. They held off the Pirates 10 to eight. The Bucks were leading until this pitch. Boom, Greg Luzinski plays long ball against lefty Grant Jackson, a three run homer to make the Phillies a six four leader at that point. They stretched it to 10 -4 and then had to hold off the Bucs in a four -run ninth. Now remember, Pittsburgh once trailed by eleven and a half games and they really made the Phillies sweat. The Pirates were tough over the late going, but the Phillies win their third straight Eastern Division title, a happy Greg Luzinski, and the Phillies move on to face the L .A. Dodgers. University of Maryland and Navy remain unbeaten in college football. Maryland beat a tough Kentucky club today, twenty to three, tailback Steve Atkins has a hundred and fifty three yards rushing Navy. they won again over boston college tonight a nineteen to eight place kicker bob tater providing most of the points he set a new school record with four field goals one of them from forty eight yards out and this is the first time that the naval academy has won their first three football games in a season since nineteen sixty three the blue jays of johns hopkins also played today they lost to franklin and marshall twenty four fifteen near the end of the first quarter jays freshman quarterback Jim Margraff had a touchdown drive for the game's first score. after getting close margraf went in a sneak over the left side hopkins up for a while but they lose it their record is now one and two we look at the scoreboard and you see maryland's win over kentucky and navy's win over bc towson state this evening a 3122 verdict over gilford we told you about john's hopkins loss morgan state is shut out again by north carolina central western maryland has to settle for a tie salsbury state strapped it on frostberg maryland eastern shore a winner over Delaware State. Bowie State 14 and Shaw 7. Penn State, a tattoo over TCU, 58 to nothing. Pitt rallied to beat North Carolina by four. California topped West Virginia by seven. It was Michigan, 52, Duke, nothing. This evening, NC State beat Wake, 34 -10. VMI over Virginia, Clemson shut out Villanova. Notre Dame had to rally to beat Purdue, 10 to six. Number one, Oklahoma rolls over Missouri, 45 -23. Arkansas, number two, had a tough time against Tulsa. Ohio State defeated Baylor. Alabama comes from behind and wins in a big way. At the half, Texas leads the Red Raiders of Texas Tech. Houston, a mild surprise over Florida State. It should be 27 -21 Houston, a winner. And South Carolina beat Georgia 27 -10. No easy task for the Colts tomorrow at the stadium. They kick it off at 2 o 'clock against the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly comes in at 2 and 2. The defense extremely tough, but the offense is nothing to overlook. Number 31, running back Wilbert Montgomery, teaming with Mike Hogan, giving the Eagles a very potent running attack this year. Montgomery has almost 350 yards rushing in the first four games. Against Washington, he scored four times in the loss. Colts, of course, not real effective against the run. And Montgomery might be seen catching a Ron Jaworski pass. He's one behind Harold Carmichael for the club leadership. Should be a dandy one tomorrow in the finals of the Loyola Soccer Tournament. Loyola against St. Louis, one of the top teams in the nation in the blue. They smashed James Madison 9 -0 today. Joe Filla had three goals for St. Louis. Don Huber added three. St. Louis kept Madison's keepers plenty busy. As for Loyola, a 6 -0 win over St. Peter's of New Jersey. Greyhounds got a couple of goals from Pete Natero and Nick Mangione. Loyola 5 -0.
