This time a year ago over 30 residents wondered if they'd ever returned to the homes they fled on Quantico Avenue in the city. Tonight three of those families are back and with the help of one resident we relive the devastating fire that virtually destroyed ten homes on that block. No one could ever remember an oil truck exploding in an alley before. But January 9th last year it happened in the Pimlico area of the city. Flaming oil ran like a river of mountain lava, or was hurled through the night onto homes that quickly became engulfed in the flames. At its worst, 10 homes were burning at once. Residents ran out into the snow to escape the flames. The light of day showed the intensity of the heat and horror of the night. I was reminded of how residents banged on neighbors' doors to get everybody out. And from one resident in particular, I heard, we are more grateful for what we have than sorry for what we lost.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144507/file/267057#t=28.03,83.07
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144507/file/267057/transcript/77256/annotation/3
Speaker 3: There has been one house to get burned down. Or did flames in the cab explode a fire extinguisher which blew a hole in the oil tank itself? causing even more explosions and flaming oil to spray out both ends of the tank. People who talk of a new spirit rising from the ashes of crumbled and burned out homes. Some people do still care about their neighbors. Elizabeth Williams is living proof of it. And no doubt Elizabeth Williams and a lot of other people will have to call on that new spirit to survive what could be difficult days of relocation ahead.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144507/file/267057#t=968.3,998.63
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144507/file/267057/transcript/77256/annotation/65
Speaker 1: good evening everybody just a few minutes ago an oil truck explosion in northwest baltimore touched off a roaring six alarm fire which is spread to at least three houses and several cars on quadico avenue the night teams bob sicolor is on the scene of the fire where bob understand that uh... at least one person uh... has been injured we're trying to get through to uh... bob sickle apparently we're having uh... some uh... audio problems well anyway we're we apparently cannot reach a bob sickle or who's live at the scene but you are looking at the pictures of the scene is in the twenty five hundred block of quantico avenue as we told you a gas uh... trailer exploded there and almost immediately set fire to about three houses within a few minutes three alarms rang out uh... just within the last few seconds That has now gone to a six alarm fire. Within the past five or 10 minutes, we are given to understand that perhaps at least one person has been injured, and there possibly could be more. The fire is intense, and as you can see, the firefighters are having some difficulty getting to it. to find out if anybody, in fact, was injured, other than the one person that we know of, in those fires.
