The body of the 18th victim was recovered from the burned out building late yesterday. Four other people are missing and believed to have also been killed in the fire. The 110-year-old Kansas City landmark was home for many elderly people and transients. Fire investigators there say they may never know what caused the fire since the building was damaged so heavily. Three people were killed and two others critically burned when liquid oxygen leaked from a ruptured pipeline vaporized and exploded in New Martinsville, West Virginia. The substance was being piped from a 900-ton tank at the Air Products and Chemical Corporation plant to the Mowbay Company facility a few miles away. Air traffic in the area had to be stopped for about an hour and traffic on the nearby Ohio River was stopped for seven hours as emergency teams battled the flames. Several very small radioactive pieces of the Soviet satellite were found laying out on the frozen lake. This large piece was also found on the lake, but was not found to be radioactive. The material was flown to Yellowknife where it arrived after dark. Helicopters brought back members of the nuclear response team. Team members spent 45 minutes in the bone-chilling cold checking each other for radiation. There was another development in the story today at the community of Snowdrift, some 50 miles to the southeast of Yellowknife. 90 Eskimos live there. There is no word in their vocabulary for radiation, they've been hearing about poison in the wind. Two can live cheaper than one is more than a cliche. For the 15 and 1 half million of us that live alone in this country, it's grim reality. There are some financial advantages to living alone, of course. Money that we might have to spend on pampers if we had children, for instance, is money we can use to pamper ourselves. But when it comes to food, we're not talking about luxuries. We're talking necessity. And if you don't buy your food in those popular family Your food bill is going to be disproportionately high. Some marketers would have us believe buying family size portions is a waste for singles. And they've tried to capture the huge singles market by convincing us of that. So they've started packaging foods especially for us, like Campbell's soup for one and Stouffer's single serving casseroles. But single serving packages can be an expensive proposition, since with many foods we pay more for the package than for what's in it. In a typical chain store, for example, Campbell's regular cans of chicken noodle soup cost about 30 cents for three servings. Logically then, soup for one should cost us one third that amount, but it doesn't. It costs 25 cents. Don't let anyone fool you. You can buy family packs and save if you're single. The key is to store the food properly. With meats, for examples, just make sure to divide what you buy into individual portions before you freeze it. Then you can defrost it, a serving at a time. You can also do this after preparing your favorite recipe. Just divide it into individual portions and freeze it in foil packs and reheat those portions as you need them. Certain things you have no choice but to buy in large quantities, like a head of lettuce. The challenge is to store it so it will last. You can find plastic food keepers which will keep it crisp for about two weeks. For frozen vegetables, you can buy large poly bags that enable you to remove and cook small portions at a time. You've got to learn all these tricks because living alone isn't easy or cheap. In the next part of our series, we'll take a look at some of the financial and related social difficulties of the single consumer. Thank you to the lady who called me from glen burney tell me about groundhogs and she said there are no groundhog's in glen burney she could not understand why. Well we'll send you our address, how's that? We'll work on that tomorrow. Let's take a look at what's happening currently we have an increasing cloud cover and it's cold out twenty three degrees that's minus five celsius humidity going up fifty one percent the winds right now nothing just plain calm No direction, no wind. 30, 35 barometers beginning to fall. And let's take a look at the satellite tonight, because it'll show us where our next precipitation is coming from. This cloud cover along the Gulf Coast associated with a storm developing in the Gulf will be moving basically in an easterly to east-northeast direction, should be off the Carolina coast, by later today, actually, within this day in coming up. Right now, that storm is really south of Louisiana. It's very small. It's not a very strong storm at this moment, but it does have quite a bit of quite a bit of precipitation with it in various forms. There's some shower activity down the south, some drizzle, some fog, and some snow over parts of northern Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, into Kentucky, and Tennessee right now. And this stuff is moving basically in the easterly to northeasterly direction. We'll be on the northern edge of the precipitation shield. So we're not expecting heavy amounts of snow. And it should be snow because temperatures will be cold enough aloft where the snow is produced. The precipitation is made. Uh... To give us snow and it should all be over by about late afternoon or early evening tomorrow so uh... No big blizzard but we're going to get some snow activity after that snow goes through just some cold weather high pressure system with really chilly temperatures five below zero this afternoon in parts of montana now tomorrow's map will show us excuse me that was today's temperatures five below 0 tomorrow's temperatures will also be very very cold look at these temperatures ten for the high 20 in Kansas City, 3 degrees in Duluth. Higher pressure will be moving eastward. However, we're gonna have that storm off the coast, as you can see, so it will be bringing us some snow activity through the day tomorrow. Quickly around the state, temperatures range from 16 out in Morgantown with cloudy skies to the low to mid-20s over the rest of the state. We'll get an easterly flow tomorrow, and here's the forecast, which does call for a little bit of snow on Groundhog Day, becoming cloudy overnight, low from 18 to 23. Tomorrow, snow, likely, one to two inches, perhaps. Temperatures in the upper 20s now. Friday, clearing, cold, kind of breezy, 25 to 30, and there are tomorrow's high and low tides. So a little bit of snow, just a light dusting, okay? Drive safely, please.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149152/file/273770#t=3302.09,3458.35
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149152/file/273770/transcript/80272/annotation/92
Speaker 20: While you're up there, I was just on the phone to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
