Baltimore County police were called to a house on teakwood court this morning when relatives of the family called 911 to report trouble. 50 year old David Lauren Dean had dropped his four year old daughter off at their house in the city and left on foot. They suspected something was wrong when they noticed blood on the little girl's dress. Officers forced their way into the house on teakwood court and found 37 year old Darlene Lauren Dean dead in an upstairs bedroom. I think it's horrible. You know, I'm not from Baltimore, but it scares me. I remember when I was going to move down here and people had said, you know, that it was it was a violent city. And it's frightening to think it happened. I sat around door. David Lauren Dean was last seen wearing a dark jacket and pants and tennis shoes. If you have any information about his whereabouts, please call Baltimore County Police at 8872198. A dramatic view of crime in our nation's capital today from the inside. In Washington, crime is on the increase against Asian owned businesses. A warning, the video you're about to see is graphic, but you don't know what's going on when you're no longer a little bit over it. All right. All right. Hi, Fred. All right. Crime. And just when it looked like things were calming down, another tourist attack in Florida, this time in Tampa. An Illinois couple had pulled up to their motel last night and were about to get out of their car when three men approached them. One of the men walked up, pulled out a gun, pointed at the driver's side window and pulled the trigger, hitting 22 year old Kenneth Buckley in the elbow. Police don't know why Buckley was shot. They say they don't believe robbery was the motive. But public defender for convicted murderer John Thanos says he'll appeal his execution order, even though vandals dismissed him and waived his right to further appeals. Garrett County Judge Fred Thayer signed the order yesterday after finding Thanos mentally competent. He's scheduled to die in the gas chamber sometime during the first week of November for the 1990 murders of three Maryland teens. Daniels would be the first person to die in Maryland's gas chamber in more than 30 years. It was on Labor Day three years ago that John Thanos shot 14 year old Melody Pistorius and her 16 year old boyfriend, Billy Wayne Brenner, to death during a convenience store robbery. We're joined now by Donna Dillon, who is Melody Pistorius mother. Donna, first of all, what was your reaction to the execution order? I was relieved. It's been a long three years. The National Weather travels to Cecil County today to determine whether it was our tornado that wrapped that ripped, rather, through the county last night. Work crews have been on the job through the night trying to restore power to the thousands who lost it during yesterday's severe storms. Winds of up to 60mph, uprooted trees, ripped off barn doors and sent debris flying. All the electricity was flowing again as of noon today. How do you know the water you drink is safe? A Washington group says for many of us, it's not. The National Resources Defense Council says 99,000 Marylanders drink contaminated water and more than 3 million more face a similar risk because of inadequate monitoring of their water supply. State officials disagree, saying the report exaggerates the problem. In any case, the question remains how can you tell if your water is safe? Joining us now is the director of the Maryland director for Clean Water Action, Drew Schmitt. Perkins, How do we know if the water that we drink is safe? Well, the first thing that everyone ought to do is if they're on a public water supply, call up the public water director and ask them for the latest test results. What is in my water? How much? And that's usually very easily available. Just call in the blue pages for your city or town. If you're on a well, you want to periodically get your own water tested itself and that means you want to call up and have a certified tester test the water, especially if there's been any recent construction or changes in the area around your.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136322/file/252900#t=493.09,601.06"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136322/file/252900/transcript/71117/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, okay. Are there in-home testing kits that you can use as well? There are some that are particularly good for lead and that's one of the problems we haven't focused on very often. And people can call the EPA drinking water hotline and get find out where they can get the tests in their own area or call the lead coalition in Baltimore City for that information. The EPA drinking water hotline. Do you have that number right off? I do. Okay. Why don't we why don't we do that right now? Okay. It's 1-800-942-6479 14791. We can also give that to viewers right after the show. Right. Listen, what about those filters? Those seem to be hot items that you go into hardware stores and they're supposed to also keep your water free of some impurities, are they not? Right. Well, some are very good and some aren't. First of all, you need to know what you're trying to do. You just don't like to taste your water, but it's safe there. Most of the simple water filters will make that the water tastes good and keep the particles out. But if you have a bigger problem with your water like lead or contaminants, a lot of those water filters just won't take those out. So you need to get a special water filter for that particular contaminant. An easy source of information is in your library with Consumer Reports. They recently did a study on water filters. You want to pick the one that meets the standards that has been tested for the particular contaminant you're worried about, and sometimes you just can't put it on your tap. You actually have to put it at the source of where the water comes into your house because of water fumes that can be equally dangerous to drinking water.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136322/file/252900#t=601.15,692.32"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136322/file/252900/transcript/71117/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Okay. Drew, thank you very much for joining us this noon, a history making day on Capitol Hill as Hillary Rodham Clinton became the only or the third first lady to testify before a congressional committee while helping to sell her husband's health care reform plan to Congress. Mrs. Clinton talked about Maryland's current health care situation. To take Maryland as an example, is much further along in developing a kind of a unified approach to health care. And I've talked to hospital administrators and physicians who've been involved in creating the system for the all payer rate paying system in the hospitals. And so they feel they have some ownership in it and they feel that it works appropriately in most instances. But many other states are not there. You'll recall Mrs. Clinton helped design the administration's health care plan. Much of her testimony is expected to center around what benefits the plan offers and how it will be paid for. John Arctic now needs only Governor Schafer's approval to return to his old seat in the Maryland House of Delegates delegates, and that's not expected to be a problem. Baltimore County's Democratic Central Committee last night nominated Arnot for a return to his old seat, which is now vacant. Ella and Joseph Diggs lived nearby. They were sleeping when the fireworks started exploding. I think it started around 1130 and it went on around 12:00. Hillary Rodham Clinton became only the third first lady to testify before Congress today. She is urging lawmakers to move quickly and adopt the plan. Mrs. Clinton also spoke highly of Maryland's health care situation. The first lady addressed three congressional committees today. As you may remember, she helped design the administration's health care plan. Deborah Stone reports on this case in Rhode Island and the reasons why local health officials and doctors believe such a tragedy is unlikely to happen here. It's very scary. Very scary. It happened at Rhode Island's Newport Hospital, but it has created fear for women across the country. It's the story of Helene Lewis, who died of cervical cancer. The hospital's lab failed to spot the cancer in four different pap smears for women. Such inaccuracy is terrifying. I think it frightens everyone when you hear that kind of thing. It's a major concern for women whether or not what's being recorded is, in fact, accurate. After hearing this story, it's very alarming because you don't know whether you're doing it or whether you know whether you have it or whether you don't have it. Some recent studies revealed the number of false readings from pap smears were so high that new federal lab regulations were adopted. Many of those new rules are still being implemented. Our state already adopted strict guidelines for labs in 1989. They undergo an annual onsite inspection by a certified set of technologist. Every pathologist inserted technologist in Maryland that reads pap smears also has to be tested annually by the department in Maryland. There are limits to the number of pap smears that can be read by one person in a 24 hour period. And 10% of all negative results must be reviewed by a supervisor. The director of gynecologic pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital says pap smears are generally highly reliable. There are a lot of places along the way where the test can go wrong. Despite all of that, it should be recognized that in the 40 or 50 years that it's been in place, the the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer has decreased by 75%.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136322/file/252900#t=3090.27,3202.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136322/file/252900/transcript/71117/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Dr. Corbin from Johns Hopkins Hospital says the tragedy in Rhode Island should in no way stop women from having a pap smear every year. In his commentary tonight, Michael Lasker calls such an execution a mercy killing. Well, the final appeal was was filed today, but it's clear we're headed towards some kind of conclusion on this. Those who have fought the death penalty through the years have called it cruel and unusual punishment in the case of John Thanos. It would be cruel punishment if he were forced to remain alive. This is a man tormented by the contents of his life. He has tried to kill himself and the state has saved him, wishing to do its own killing. It is a twisted and bloody logic that includes not only wasted court hours and government spending, but the clear violation of a desperate man's desire to end his very own existence. The government says it's all a matter of the time of day. Yeah, it really is. You know, it's a question of if there's a sale on every day. There really is when it comes to electricity. It's just most of us have no idea how to take advantage of it. You know, most of us are used to waiting for sales every day. Why not? We can save 10 or 20%. Well, we can wait for daily sales on electricity. Why not? Time is the key to many charges. Dial after daylight and you'll save on long distance charges. Shop during sale hours and you'll save. You can even get two for one dry cleaning on certain days. And now the same thing can be said about electricity. Not that it's free, but that it can be bought for a lot less. We will make it attractive to you in terms of your rate if you help us out during certain periods of time. That makes and saves you a lot of sense from a high of $0.18 per kilowatt hour. So if you use electricity only at 3:00 in the morning figuring that you're saving a lot of money, you're not. If you have a regular meter, you need a special meter that will measure your savings. This meter does that, keeping a record of not only how much, but when the energy was used. And we all know there are certain uses that can be put off until the rates drop to a more affordable level. Now, these time of use meters are now required in all new construction. But you have to retrofit your house if you have a regular meter, but put a number up for the people to call if they want to try that because they and they're expecting a lot of people to. That's the number one 800 786 2000 that's P.G. and his number And they'll make an appointment to come out and do it. Well, now, before everybody rushes out to call, does the meter itself cost consumers more? Yeah, it's about an extra five bucks a month. But they still they take that into account in saying that it'll save you nine, ten, 11% per year. Even with that even with that additional charge. And the thing I like about it is, you know, if it doesn't, you can pull it out and put in the other put the other meter back in. So there's no charge to come out. They will retrofit you for this, but there is a waiting list. So you got to be a little patient that even if I cut back on electricity during peak times, I don't have the meter. The man who leads this church is beloved by his parishioners. He has tripled the size of the flock. He has taken in 20 young men from dysfunctional families in the neighborhood and raised them in his parish house. But earlier this summer, Father Maurice Blackwell was accused of inappropriately touching a teenager. Today, a month after receiving a final police investigation, the city's state's attorney decided not to file charges. After reviewing all the available evidence, we simply concluded that the evidence was insufficient to prove a crime beyond a reasonable doubt. At his parish, Saint Edward's, the news spread quickly.
