And now the source state, according to the FBI report released just last month, is Maryland. And when I say that Maryland has become the source for most of the guns up and down the East Coast are involved in brutal crime, and the homicide today is an embarrassment, and we must put a stop to it. I said, you know, hey look, here's the drill. It is going to get mild. That's the good news. Bad news is this time of the year, warm, humid air comes up in the Mid-Atlantic and it's going to get cloudy. And right now we've got another day tacked on to the end of the five day forecast. And that day also is going to be cloudy but real mild. Big time out. That day is Saturday. Can you handle 60 degrees? So even if you just have some high cloudiness in an area, you don't need total sunshine, there is going to be a little bit of a thermal kick. That indeed is happening. Now off to our east. Look at the local radar. Have we got rain coming our way? Here's a live and and living color answer to that question. Yeah, you bet. We've got a river of moisture sliding into the area. For the most part. The Baltimore metro region and portions of Baltimore County have not really seen any rain so far. It has somewhat bypassed our area. That's all going to come to a screeching halt here over about the next half hour. 45 minutes, and we're expecting an inch of rain between now and about seven, 8:00 tomorrow morning. Get a satellite view of this East Coast radar picture. And we've just got one big old area of low pressure sitting right down to our south, and it's powering all this moisture, our away plot, the low now over the western Carolinas. And the big factor has to be this warm, humid air shooting itself up the coast. The national radar of view of, of this, of this, the current storm. And I say current because there's two more hanging on out to the West. Here's this big slug of energy coming our way, and we really are going to see about an inch out of this storm once again before it's over. And in this area today, besides the rain, definitely county and fog. That's going to be a problem throughout the course of this day and through this upcoming night. High temperatures. Pocahontas, sure to become an all time Disney classic, is coming to a video store near you soon. This is a major announcement from the Walt Disney folks and this afternoon live via satellite. We are thrilled to have the voice of Pocahontas herself, Irene Bedard, with us. Hi. How are you doing? Hello. Good. How are you? Couldn't be better. Some of you may remember Irene joined us on Eyewitness News at five and at six a few months ago downtown for pediatric oncology, a fundraiser for Johns Hopkins. It's great to see you again. Nice to see you, too. Let's talk for a second. Did you when you were making Pocahontas, think to yourself it would be this huge. So this successful on the Disney? Put it out in a home video this fast? I mean, even if you remember The Lion King, you could say, well, those are animals. And yet at the same time, you could see Jeremy Irons, and that's what they've done. It's the magic of Disney. Has we have not heard that he has spoken. We think there may be 1 or 2 speakers away. He is to speak just before Alien Higginbotham, the retired federal judge, comes up and swears NYC. So, he's probably, I would say, about ten minutes away from speaking before he is sworn in. I guess I don't even remember that there was a great hall at the Justice Department. Well, sadly, the folks who watch closely and whom I grow up to become a national leader had good reason to be smiling today. Here is a man who grew up in the slums of Baltimore to hold one of the most prestigious positions in this country. Baltimore's African-American community gives Kweisi Mfume a lot of credit for walking away from his prestigious job in the Congress to tackle the problems facing the NAACP. Being an Afro-American, it means a lot to him. He knows where he has come from, and he feels, I imagine he feels, that he can offer something back to the community, which I think is a very wonderful thing. Yes. This is a particularly proud day for Baltimore, a city where a boy once named Frizzell Gray could father five sons, then become a leader in the city council, then a major player in the House of Representatives? It's no wonder he sees the talk of Sam's two barbershop. You know, I haven't seen anybody that's actually been, you know, in the community like he had, you know, like he's been, you know, and and still in the community still, you know, so I say he is probably a cut above the rest along the way. Kweisi Mfume attended Morgan State University and was program director of its very popular 88.9 WEAA, Baltimore's number one public radio station. I think just knowing that he is taking this, command, gives me, a lot of promise, a lot of hope for the NAACP. And I want to become a member just knowing that he's taking this new leadership role. It has everyone totally baffled, and it's just a shame. It's just really, totally bizarre. We don't know why. In the eastern shore town of Easton, the murdered family and the suspect son are a disturbing presence. A tear in the fabric of normal life. Just think, it's a shame. And it's scary. It's always scary to know that something that close to home can happen in this small little town. We're just devastated. It's unreal that this could happen. My children were both students of Mr. Fisher and they're devastated. Just sad. The whole town was sad. 41 year old Susan Ray Fisher was a high school teacher. Her 27 year old husband, Christopher Fisher, taught fourth grade. Their 14 year old son, David, was a middle school student. All were murdered in their beds early Monday morning. Police say Michael Fisher has confessed to killing them. That's what's so shocking. And I think the fact that it could have happened and it could have been him and not knowing why. Makes you ask yourself, why would a 16 year old do this? Flowers have shown up at the school where Jim Fisher taught at Easton Middle School. Grief counselors have been talking to students and staff. Well, yesterday was mostly the initial shock of what it actually happened. Today, a lot of the questions are answered, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions. A lot of the kids are just getting together, remembering good times that they had with David and, being able to laugh and cry at the same time.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136411/file/253002#t=2242.54,2344.44"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136411/file/253002/transcript/71284/annotation/23","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We don't understand and we may never understand. Alex Demetric, channel 13 Eyewitness News. And the murders are not the only loss Easton is dealing with tonight. Last night, 64 year old John Scheffler was struck and killed by a car while he was walking to a memorial service for the slain family. The jury had plenty to think about this afternoon as the mother accused of killing her two young daughters testified Rene Alton was the only witness to take the stand. Her face was flushed as she was asked if she started the fire, which killed her children. Alton said no. She was asked, did you kill your children? Once again she answered, no. I think she tried to give the best account. That she could remember to the ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I mean. But what's her limitations? She wasn't able to reconstruct, even in her own mind, everything that happened, after all, and testified. The prosecution offered a plea bargain and asked her mother to help her make the decision. They refused. The trial continues tomorrow with testimony from an expert in police coerced confessions. Ron. Sir? What happened? Well, let me just tell you this, Richard, judge Cahill just left the courthouse. So we finished up day one of this proceeding. Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge Robert Cahill finds himself in a most unusual position today. He's sitting in the chair of the accused as the Commission on Judicial Disabilities begins to scrutinize remarks made by Judge Cahill in a now famous 1994 case. And that is when the judge sentenced trucker Kenneth Peacock for manslaughter in the murder of his unfaithful wife. Now, it's not the 18 month sentence that is at issue at this hearing. It's the remarks that were made by the judge. According to transcripts, the judge said, I seriously wonder how many men married five, four years would have the strength to walk away without inflicting some corporal punishment. Now, those remarks set off a firestorm of controversy and led to a series of demonstrations against Judge Cahill and Towson, and also for some, calls for his removal from the bench. Now, the investigative counsel in this case, Christopher Romano, called six witnesses in an attempt to bolster his claim that Judge Cahill's remarks were offensive, inappropriate and demonstrated gender bias. Now, so far, Judge Cahill's attorneys have called five witnesses, including Court of Special Appeals Judge Joseph Murphy. He defended Cahill's term, use of the term non-criminal and referring to Kenneth Peacock, Judge Murphy said that term is synonymous with the term first offender and often heard in a criminal proceeding, and from all indications, we will be hearing from Judge Cahill in this proceeding, possibly tomorrow. While half of the boomers admit they smoked pot at one time, three fourths of them say they would be upset if their child ever tried it. They're surprised to learn that today's teens believe there are fewer risks and more positives to smoking pot than there were years ago. More than 40% say it helps them relax, forget their problems, and enjoy life more. And a separate study was also published today that says smoking pot on a regular basis can have adverse effects on attention span. Oh, that's not good. Do the researchers anticipate this trend to continue? They say that the trend will probably continue as long as parents and children keep the same attitudes. Parents need to be more aware that there's a good chance that their child could indeed be smoking pot, and kids need to be aware of the fact that this is not a good thing to do. Okay. Thanks, Kelly. This woman wants to remain anonymous because what she and two boys saw Saturday while tobogganing scared her. The man charged with stabbing the Brittany spaniel, Bill Shockley, has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty. After the stabbing, he took off on the snowmobile. The witnesses tried to rescue the dog, but it died an hour later. We loaded him on the red toboggan, and that's when I noticed a huge, sucking, gaping abdominal wound. A ranger at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area was called in to investigate. He noticed from the place the dog had been tossed in the brier patch. There were snowmobile tracks. We had one ski the whole way, sometimes two skis when he got over in the cornfields, but it was a perfect track all the way to the year. The tracks led to a cut fence leading from the state property, and then to a home six miles away and a snowmobile matching the description. But the owner said someone had borrowed it. Police say that was Shockley. It turned out that the dog belonged to Bill Shockley's roommate, who had adopted him last summer when he was found running around as a stray on the Fair Hill property. The ranger said when he confronted Bill Shockley, he confessed. He stated that when he was driving the snowmobile, apparently the dog was trying to run with him and running around the snowmobile, and he was telling the dog to go home. He said he lost his head when a dog failed to listen to him. The dog had been stabbed repeatedly, and though the family tried to save it, they had trouble finding a veterinarian open on Saturday night. So far, polls show Bob Dole and Pat Buchanan in a virtual dead heat, with Lamar Alexander coming in a close third and a battle of a different kind in Italy, where thousands of people are throwing oranges at each other. The battle of the oranges is an annual tradition in a carnival that marks the days leading up to lent. 500 people were treated for bruises during the three day battle. Just goes to show in the battle of the oranges, you have to keep your eyes peeled. Oh, okay. Well, already there are major changes in the works because of the terrible train crash in Silver Spring. That story coming your way on Eyewitness News tonight at six. Denise is in the newsroom with a preview. Hi, Denise. Hi, Richard. Well, Transportation Secretary Federico Pena is calling for emergency action. All this comes as investigators wonder if many of those who died in the train collision might have lived, if there were better escape routes. Later, at six, we'll show you what's being changed to protect travelers. And we'll take you to a national airport where a Continental Airlines jet shot off the runway.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136411/file/253002#t=4356.83,4447.47"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136411/file/253002/transcript/71284/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Bring you up to date on passengers. And what happened? Those stories coming up at six. But right now, back to Eyewitness News at five. Where Sally talks to a man whose daughter gave him a very big surprise. Sally. You can say that again, Denise. The Good Doctor is a TV movie about pediatrician Paul Fleiss. That's Fleiss, as in Heidi, the Hollywood madam's father. I recently spoke to Doctor Fleiss about life after his daughter's arrest for running a prostitution ring. It might have been described as a prostitution ring, but it was never that. And, a lot of the things that the media have said about, Heidi, me and all the activities that, happened were just simply not true. You wouldn't describe it as a prostitution ring. What would you describe it as? Well, I think, Heidi was more or less, running an escort service. And, you know, I don't really know what she was doing, but a lot of people believe prostitution is a victimless crime, that a woman should be able to do what she wants with her own body. This is your daughter we're talking about. Not some idea. She could spend her 30s in jail. For what? Who did she hurt? Are escort services in the Yellow Pages. What Heidi did is in the phone book in The Good Doctor, starring George Siegel and Michael Gross as Paul Fleiss. We don't see a flashy Beverly Hills physician like the one pictured in the tabloids, but rather a soft spoken, middle class family doctor. You have been quoted as saying that it was kind of a lark what she was doing, but if you had known about it before the arrest, would you have tried to talk her out of this? Yes. Listen to this story now of a newlywed couple in Illinois who might have to live on love after a very costly wedding mistake. Vince and Melissa Pecora. They had a beautiful wedding. They received $11,000 in cash and checks, counted the money, put it in a briefcase. Then Vince left the case on the roof of the car and drove off. That ended plans for any kind of a honeymoon. The basic thing was the honeymoon was off. I wanted to show her a great time. I was never away with her. And. And to have Sunday the be the best point of my life. I hope it was her life. Watch of and who may be sworn in. So we'll get to that in a moment. All right. Let's talk a little weather here. It's going to be damp and mild. I mentioned this yesterday. I could go I could to keep your umbrellas out, but we are at least going to be going to 60 this weekend. Let's go ahead and take a mr. Vogel. Did I get a sunrise shot this morning? There wasn't none. Effectively. But this is the clouds. These are the clouds. As they started descending down the base of the candelabra tower here, high atop Television Hill overlooking the beautiful Jones Falls valley. And the beat has continued. It's just foggy. I mean, big time foggy in this area. Now, as we continue to see this warm, moist air, this continue to push it south up in the Mid-Atlantic, almost 69 Salisbury, almost 60 now in Ocean City, 44 in the district and here on TV Hill, 43, in Hagerstown, Harrisburg, Shrewsbury, in York, the southern PA metroplex in the lower 40s, right now 52 degrees in Wilmington. Said and done with, we plot another area of low pressure right now near Chicago. Plot another area of low pressure, pretty strong wind coming ashore in in California. Where's the air coming from? The weather right now, it's coming from where people spend 2 or $3000 to vacation for a week during this time of the year. So it is going to be mild, damp but mild. And in this area today, besides the rain, definitely county and fog. That's going to be a problem throughout the course of this day and through this upcoming night. High temperatures. Today we may even get a degree or two warmer than what you're looking at right here 64 in Salisbury. That is not a misprint. Neither is that 6350 in Baltimore, 50 degrees in Washington, Westminster 48, Annapolis 5352. In Elkton, Bel Air up the route one quarter, 48 degrees. Yes. We have to understand racial stereotypes so that we might be able to change the hearts and minds of people in such a way that, in the end, we change our nation. Kweisi Mfume will help shape the future of this nation's youth. Of the four victory, there is no stopping him now. It's not necessarily how you start the race, it's how you finish it. And off he goes. Now, Kweisi was hired at WEAA exactly 20 years ago, back in 1976. Very poignant. His name to Kweisi Mfume. Very poignant today. Right. That name, Kweisi Mfume is Swahili for son of conquering kings and queens. He has a lot of conquering to do in his new job. And of course, we all wish him well here, here, there, there. The federal government is stepping in to try and make sure there's never a repeat of last Friday's deadly train crash in Silver Spring. Transportation Secretary Frederico Pena announced new rules to prevent a similar tragedy. They require crew members to call out verbal confirmation of signal callers and limit the speed of passenger trains near stations to 30mph. Also today, police released a tape of the first 911 call reporting the crash on a train, just one off the track behind Duncan Underwood from fire.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136411/file/253002#t=2042.95,2147.86"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136411/file/253002/transcript/71328/annotation/73","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"A train is. The other two crew members killed in the crash were also drug free. The families of those who lost their lives in last week's train crash anxiously await investigators findings. In Baltimore today, the father and sister of Carlos Byrd talked about the pain of their loss. Carlos was one of the Job Corps students aboard the Mark train. He had been on his way home for the long President's Day weekend. A little bit better, but thinking about the fact that he's not going to walk through the door and there's there's no 21st birthday, there's no there's no wedding, there's a niece or nephew, there's there's no nothing that's hard to deal with. Nobody wants to lose anything that they love. You know, I mean, obviously people can understand materialistic things. You know, when they lose it and everything else, then this is half me and half my wife. You know, I was there, so I just lost everything. A part of me. Funeral services for Carlos Byrde are planned for this Saturday at the Cornerstone Church of Christ on Park Heights Avenue. Deborah Stone will have more on the Byrd family at six, and people down and east in are still in shock tonight after the triple murder of a family and the son arrested for that crime. Those who know him can't believe he is charged with killing his younger brother and parents. Extremely out of character. Extremely bizarre. Very. A lot of the kids are just getting together, remembering good times that they had with David and, being able to laugh and cry at the same time.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136411/file/253002#t=2242.54,2344.44"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136411/file/253002/transcript/71328/annotation/75","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We don't understand and we may never understand. Did a Baltimore County judge go too far when he sentenced a man who killed his wife when he found her in bed with another man? Ron. Most baby boomers, unlike their children, now have an anti marijuana position. A recent survey shows parents are raising their kids with a do as I say, not as I do attitude. There are even some thundershowers in over portions of southeast Virginia and portions of eastern North Carolina. In the last few hours. We've reported some thunder down there, and the rain just keeps on coming. We'll continue to do this until about early tomorrow morning. Area of low pressure.
