Cochran now the top money winner on that series with $67 ,000. The Orioles gained a split of their four -game series with the Oakland A's by beating the A's four to three of the Orioles. Now five wins and two losses on the West Coast road trip. They head to California. They took eight out of a dozen from the A's, finished their series with Oakland, and can be no worse off than a game out of first place because of the Toronto Blue Jays play in Texas tonight. The Jays started action leading the Orioles by one. Scott McGregor won his 12th game of the year, tying him for the major league lead and wins. McGregor is the ace of the staff. If you say Storm Davis is the stopper, McGregor has to be the ace. The Orioles, Eddie Murray doubled in the first run of the first inning, Murray's 61st RBI. Jim Dwyer knocked in another run, 15 RBIs in nine games, and Ken Singleton knocked in a pair. The Orioles win it again four to three. The Atlanta Braves scored six times in the first inning, went on to beat the Phillies rather easily, 12 to four in Atlanta. Braves now with 61 wins. They have more victories than any team in baseball right now. Take a look at some of the highlights from today's play in Atlanta. Bob Horner was probably one of the most productive third baseman's in the game today. Hits a solo shot deep to left field. The Braves go ahead seven to two in the bottom half of the third inning on the Horner home run. Top of the fifth inning, back to back home runs, Claudel Washington. connects for his fifth of the season, hit it over the head there of Gary Maddox in center field. and then bob horner comes back up again and puts one of the left field seats once again the braves nine two they go on to a twelve four win here's a look now at all the baseball scores from the american league the orioles went at four three they're a half game back at toronto can close the gap to even actually even things up if toronto would lose to texas but the rangers have fallen on hard times lately they have lost something like fourteen of their last eighteen games yankees won four three over kansas city now this is a game that george brett hit a two run homer in with two out in the ninth inning to give Kansas City what they thought was a win. But the umpire found out that the bat had cork in it. The home run was taken off the board. The Yankees won it four to three as Brett was ruled out. The tar that they put on the bats was up around the letters. Billy Martin protested and Brett went wild. Dave Winfield hit his 16th home run. California leads the Tigers three, one in the seventh inning. Milwaukee won over Chicago by a score of eight to seven. Jim Gantner squeezed in the winning Brewer run. Milwaukee's won 19 of 24, Boston leading Seattle 4 -0 in the 7th, and Minnesota won its second game in a row, defeating Cleveland 7 -5 as Gary Ward hit a three -run homer, Gary Gaietti a two -run shuttle for Rick Sutcliffe, all in the first inning. Second game, Twins are leading in the fourth. In the National League, the Pirates won the first game. They are tied in the ninth inning now with the San Francisco Giants in game two. Braves won it as we sit over the Phillies 12 -4. The St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 3 -0. Neil Allen for the St. Louis Cardinals. As we take a look at that scoreboard, Neil Allen pitched his second straight shutout for the Cardinals as they break a four game losing streak. Chicago one over San Diego five to two runs, say knocked in four runs with a homer, a double and a sacrifice fly. Montreal down, Houston seven to three. Steve Rogers wins his 13th, Al Oliver knocked in two for Montreal and the Reds, Joe Price won his 10th game of the year, Cincinnati four, the New York Mets two. Now one of the better fights that I've seen recently on TV, Robin Blake remained Unbeat it. unbeaten that is by knocking out tony baltazar in the ninth round of their scheduled bout in las vegas and as we take a look at some of this action some tremendous hitting here by robin blake against baltazar against the ropes just keeps pounding pounding pounding no let up but baltazar was able to continue can you believe this the referee did not stop the fight although baltazar was knocked to the Now out in the middle, you'll see a Balthazar go down. and this will be the last time he'll go down as they throw in the towel and wind up the knockout in the ninth round in the wind there to Robin Blake. Now Calvin Peat has won the men's golf tournament in Williamsburg. It was the second straight year that Peat has won in Williamsburg. Peat began the day six strokes down, back of yesterday's leader Hal Sutton. Peat's final round was a sixty -nine. He finished the stroke in front of Tim Norris. Both Peat and Norris went past Sutton when Hal failed to make a birdie the entire day. Sutton tied for third with Lonnie Watkins after a 77. Calvin Pete earned a check for $63 ,000. Congratulations to Calvin Pete. The Colts have yet to make any cuts after yesterday's scrimmage against the Redskins. The Colts will scrimmage the Skins again next Saturday in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Lauren Howe notched her first victory when she beat Donna Capone by one shot. And the women's pro golf stop, the $200 ,000 event, the Mayflower Classic in Indianapolis. So Frank, a big day for golf, big day for the Orioles as they win, and the Birds can be no worse off tomorrow morning than one game back.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144423/file/266920#t=907.28,1196.66
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144423/file/266920/transcript/77112/annotation/37
Speaker 1: Good, and I know you weren't able to get out of this one today, but the other major event in the sporting world was today's running of the bagel race. Well, at least I'm happy that that heat wave we had is gone. And the cool air that's been beginning to pump in today, as a matter of fact, is the same one that cooled off St. Louis, which had five days of 100 plus temperatures, and it's heading this way. That's good news. Looks like three or four days this week should be super. Let's look at the current stats right now. On good old TV Hill, the temperature is 86 degrees, humidity at 38 percent. Isn't that a change over what we had? Northwesterly Breezes at 14. And the barometer is beginning to rise. Next tides, high and low at Fort McHenry. Our sun rise for tomorrow at 559. Sunset will be at 27 minutes after 8 o 'clock. Well, it was just a great day today. I think that the rain that we kind of anticipated might show up sometime today really didn't. We thought there'd be some probably before noontime, but there really wasn't. We ended up having a day today that ended up being breezy, sunshiny, and a nice day for taking a walk and... Feeding the pigeons, huh? It did get up to 93 degrees for our high today. It was also 93 down the eastern shore in Easton. It was 89 in Westminster. 89 degrees was the reading up in Cumberland. Let's look at the radar. Seems to be that we are in the clear as far as precipitation goes. There is some off Atlantic City, some in the southern New Jersey, also some south of Richmond, a little bit down approaching Cape Hatteras, all moving in the west to an easterly direction. Thank you for watching. all part of the frontal system that slipped through this morning but didn't fortunately bring us any rain at all. We kind of expected some but it didn't occur. Satellite view from SkyTrak and here it comes, you see, this is the rain right now that we thought might get by us and it didn't. I mean it went this way instead of this way. So we ended up with a fairly good day today. A lot of the braces of the high -pressure system begins to move in on us. And of course the high pressure system is the fair weather system and it's moving slowly enough that we are pretty well insured of one, two, three, maybe four really great days with temperatures moderating in the mid to upper 80s, nice breezes and for the most part sunny days. They did have an awful lot of rain up in the New England area and there was also some in southern New Jersey moving up toward New York. Down in Miami today they had a record high of 98 degrees, we always think of Florida as being warm all the time, normally it should be about 82, they had 98. But tomorrow's map from AccuWeather shows us that the cool front system will be just beyond us now. Rain showers will be down in the Carolinas. They had a wind gust today in Memphis, Tennessee of 88 miles an hour. pretty heavy thunderstorm, but the rain will be missing us. The high pressure here beginning to float in good weather until we get to about Thursday or Friday. This low pressure coming along may build the humidity up just a little bit and our temperatures proportionately will begin to climb around the area. Now the temperatures are down pretty well to 89 90 degrees 90 right now in D. C. It's 85 out in Ocean City 88. The current reading in Salisbury 87 and over. You see 83 up in the in the Pennsylvania area. Winds now northwesterly at 12 to 22 will be the same tonight and about the same tomorrow which is going to ensure breezes, but for those of you going to do any boating on the bay, the waves will be about one foot or less, at least from Windmill Point to the north. Five -day forecast from AccuWeather. Love these forecasts. Sunshine for the next four days, maybe some clouds mixed in, but generally very, very pleasant. 85 85 87 and 89 with a chance of a thunderstorm by the time we get to Friday all in all. Looks like a super weak Frank and after the heat that we had about a week ago, I think I could take about four weeks of this. How about you?
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144423/file/266920#t=1345.04,1559.88
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144423/file/266920/transcript/77112/annotation/39
Speaker 1: I could also. Thank you, Ron. Well, the next time an out of towner asks you what there is to do in Baltimore, today might be the day to use as an example. Of course, you can always go to an Asian festival, the likes of which was held at Hopkins Plaza today. The fourth annual Showcase of Nations Asian Festival featured a diverse blend of far eastern cultures highlighting their arts, crafts, delicious foods and native costumes. But then there's also Nautical Day. That was the theme of the day's Sunny Sundays at Fells Point. Hand -made crafts and paintings depicting things maritime were only a small part of what the event had to offer. Of course, if that's not enough, there's Artscape. Today is the final day of the three -day festival that celebrates all forms of art. Artscape, of course, is one of the largest art festivals on the East Coast, and today you might have caught sight of a walking stage that kept some youngsters amused. Of course, there were some people who had a hard time keeping still. You can still catch some of the festival in the Mount Royal area. It goes on until 10 o 'clock tonight. That's the news till now. We'll be back at 11 o 'clock following the ABC Sunday night movie, Rooster. Now for Ron Reilly, Tom Davis and the entire Eyewitness News team, I'm Frank Rueber. The gunman who wounded two security guards in Reisterstown Road Plaza are still on the loose. An elephant who broke his chains and killed a game warden has been recaptured in California. At least four arson fires this week are hampering restoration efforts in a Baltimore neighborhood and floods are washing away parts of the Japanese landscape. Details on these stories, all the news, sports and acu -weather, next on Eyewitness News. Good evening everyone. Tonight police are still looking for three gunmen who wounded two security guards in the Reisterstown Road Plaza this afternoon. Police say the shootings occurred during an apparent attempted robbery at a Rite Aid pharmacy in the shopping plaza. The shootings erupted in the Rite Aid pharmacy in the Reisterstown Plaza at about 3 .45 this afternoon. Two security guards on duty at the time were shot but not seriously. 23 -year -old Joann Williams of Avon Avenue was wounded in the foot and buttocks. And 22 -year -old Tyrone Bowers of Bowers Avenue was struck in the left back with a bullet exited through his shoulder. Here at the Northwestern District, police are looking for three subjects, but so far have no suspects. But they do have good descriptions of the three. I really did go. You know, if you think about it, Frank, in the last 10 days, 12 days, we've had a sample of just about every kind of weather, with the possible exception of a snowstorm in July. There was a time, though, when the snowstorm that we had on the 21st, 22nd of February was very tempting. We've had a heat wave, and well, we've had, of course, a very bad storm, which occurred last week, and now we've had a transition. Tonight, we have just a beautiful night with a spectacular moon out there, and just perfect. Matter of fact, tonight is going to be down in the 50s. Believe that and very moderate for the balance of the week. I don't want to let you down at all Let's look at the current statistics first on TB Hill and we'll get down some of the explicit details 77 degrees 52 the humidity Northwest breezes and a rising barometer here come the tides Fort McHenry high and low Sunrise and sunset for tomorrow beginning of the work week Monday our instant IQs could cruise out tonight at Artscape Mount Royal Avenue nice night have one over here a couple for my friends Looked good, huh? Hope you got a chance to get out tonight and even take a walk and watch the beautiful sunset we had. It did get up to 93 degrees in Baltimore and generally over our viewing area temperatures were primarily in the 80s, 85, 89, 92 degrees. I think about 93 in Baltimore was the high for the state. Look at our radar and you'll see we have regular temperature inversion, ground clutter patterns. There is no rain showing up in it now, quite a contrast from last night. Last night at this time we were having a little bit of rain coming down. Temperatures around the area, generally around the 70s. We can get the state map up right now, we'll take a quick look at it. There we go. 79 in D .C., 77 as I said in Baltimore, 74 in Annapolis and Easton, same, 78 out Dover, Ocean City is 75. More spectacular beach weather coming up, little bit of an ocean breeze will keep the temperatures there down into about the mid 80s, maybe 89 tomorrow. 76 in Salisbury with northwestly winds of 12 to 22. Looking back toward the mountains and the panhandle at 74 in Cumberland, Maryland and 72 the current reading Martinsburg, West Virginia. The map for tomorrow will indicate our high pressure center which is beginning to move in and here we see we are in a very dry slot right now. There was some rain going on up in New England, there is some still left, and this is the frontal system as it went running on through. some very heavy rain off Cape Hatteras. Now North Carolina area and Miami believe it or not set four records for high temperatures today. 98 degrees in the general Miami area. Fort Lauderdale had 93, 97 in West Palm Beach. All records down there having a heat wave in Florida. Okay, tomorrow high pressure will begin from the Midwest moving in towards us, meandering very slowly with its clockwise flow of winds and it'll be coming down on us, giving us. Breeze. clear skies and very, very nice temperatures. Of course this cold front will be just a little bit close to us and as it moves generally in a southwesterly direction, there may be some clouds along with it that may show up. Very high clouds tomorrow, but I think we'll end up with a very perfect day. Let's look at the five -day forecast from Matthew Weather. Here it comes. Good day, 85 tomorrow, 85 Tuesday, 87 Wednesday, 89 Thursday. What more could you ask for in the middle of summer, huh? They now head to Anaheim to play the Angels tomorrow night on Monday night baseball in a game which you can watch here on Channel 13, and I may add that the Orioles are now the first place Orioles with Toronto. Ken Singleton with a two run single highlighted a three run fifth inning and capped the Orioles scoring. Eddie Murray drove in the Orioles first run with a first inning double. Jim Dwyer doubled in the Orioles second run of the fifth inning. Dwyer now has fifteen RBIs in his last nine games. Scott McGregor won his twelfth game. McGregor's fourth straight win. He's scattered ten hits. Scott Walk just one batter. He won his eighth decision in his last nine. Now the Orioles gave up a couple of runs late in the game, all three of the A's runs scored on Homer's Carney Lanser with a two run shot and Dwayne Murphy hit a home run in the ninth inning leading off the ninth. Cal Ripken by the way had a hit streak snap at eleven. The Orioles wrap up their west coast road trip starting in Anaheim tomorrow night. Now a home run can be taken away very rarely in baseball. You have to go all the way back to 1959 when the Orioles were playing the Chicago White Sox and Ted Klosewski had a three run homer taken away from him because third base umpire Ed Hurley had called time in an Oriole Chicago White Sox game. Today though George Brett had a two run homer taken away from him but for a much much different reason. Yankee Stadium in New York. Two run homer by Brett off Rich Gossage with two out in the top of the ninth inning giving the Royals a five to four lead over the Yankees. Billy Martin later said he knew Brett had been using an illegal bat for some time, came out, protested the use of pine tarp too close to the label. It has to be at least 18 inches away from the label. The umpires, Joe Brinkman and Tim McClellan, allowed the protest. Brett came racing out of the dugout like a caged lion, but the decision was made and the Royals wound up losing. And Atlanta, the Braves scored six in the first. Thanks for watching! went on to beat the Phillies 12 -4. Bob Horner homered twice to drive in three runs. Horner and Dale Murphy the best one -two punch in the National League. The Orioles Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken closing in though on the Braves pair. The later Claudel Washington homered in the Braves win over the Phillies. Braves 61st the most in baseball. Let's take a look now at the scoreboard if we can. Baltimore 4 -3 over Oakland. Texas tonight beat Toronto 3 -0. Rick Honeycutt became the first 13 -game winner and the majors a four -hit shutout. The Rangers are tied for first with the Chicago White Sox one percentage point back to Toronto tied with the Orioles. Yankees 4 -3 over Kansas City. The Yankees are a game back. Detroit trails only by a half after beating California 4 -3 on a Lance Parrish 12th inning home run. Milwaukee 2 back after winning over Chicago 8 -7. Jim Gantner squeezed home the winning run. Boston shut out Seattle 6 -0. John Tudor a 6 -hitter. Minnesota won a pair from the Cleveland Indians. In the National League, the San Francisco Giants and the Pirates split a double header. first game went to the Pirates, second to the Giants on a Jeff Leonard grand slam in the 11th inning. Atlanta won as we said earlier, beating the Phillies 12 -4, Braves have a 4 .5 game lead over the Dodgers. The Dodgers were shut out by St. Louis 3 -0. Neil Allen with his second straight shutout the Cubs a 5 -2 victory over the San Diego Padres Ron say knock in four in Montreal seven to three went over Houston Steve Rogers won his 13th and Cincinnati beat the New York Mets four to two now boxing at its finest today in Las Vegas. A 10 -round lightweight match ended in the ninth as unbeaten Robin Blake knocked out Tony Balthazar. Now Balthazar up against the ropes and really being pulverized by Blake. I was surprised the fight wasn't stopped here. Balthazar had suffered a deep gash across his right eyelid, continued bleeding until the fight ended in the ninth round. Blake was in trouble late in the seventh, but the bell saved him. Blake took the fight over from that point and won in very convincingly fashion. off of Bulbasar. Now Calvin Peet has won the men's golf tournament in Williamsburg. It was the second straight year that Peet has won down in Williamsburg. Peet began the day six strokes down to yesterday's leader Hal Sutton. Peet's final round was a 69. He finished a stroke in front of Tim Norris. Both Peet and Norris went past Sutton when Hal failed to make a birdie all day. Sutton tied for third with Lanny Watkins after 77. Calvin Peet earned $63 ,000 and Lauren Hal won her first LPGA tournament ever. winning out in Indianapolis.
