Thank you, Bob. In the news this morning. Grief stricken families of the victims of Swissair Flight 111 are flooding into Nova Scotia today, taking on the emotional tour of identifying the remains pulled from the ocean. Once Gonzalez reports, they're arriving on specially arranged flights from Geneva. After more than 24 hours on the water. What was once a frantic search for survivors has turned into a slow, somber retrieval of wreckage and items once so very personal. Staff and parts of the bodies in the stuff exploded over wallets, shoes all broke, the pieces of clothes, all board a piece of the plane, all broke up in little bits, a camera case. Smells of diesel fuel. Smells of jet fuel. Batteries. A perfectly folded shirt floating in the water and a passport. Were almost too much for rescuers to bear. Looking at the photograph of a young girl, that's what, 17 years old, born in November 1981. She just got her passport a month ago. I don't know if she's ever been anywhere, but this may have been her first trip. The investigation, meanwhile, is well underway. The president of Swissair says the MD 11 jet had been given a clean bill of health. Our focus is to collect every detail, in fact, that we can, and there's no indication about the potential cause of the accident of any sort. Investigators do know that the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit and then disappeared from radar six minutes later off the coast of Nova Scotia. They're hoping the black box will fill in the rest of the blanks. Our problem here is that we know that there was smoke in the cockpit. Our investigative correspondent Roberta Baskin has an exclusive report now on a potential solution to that problem. Good morning. Good morning, Jane. Many of the worst airline crashes that we can remember have something in common. Smoke it can blind the pilot, disorient the crews and choke passengers. There is a device that could help pilots see their instrument panel through dense smoke. But efforts to use the technology haven't gotten off the ground. Back in 1996, when ValuJet Flight 592 crashed into the Everglades, the pilot's distress call was smoke in the cockpit. It had experienced a prime example of smoke in the cockpit back in 1970. Swissair faced another smoke in the cockpit emergency in 1993. According to this letter from Swiss Air's former chief of safety. Quote, The situation was so serious that the pilots were unable to read the approach chart in the instruments. But the pilot managed to make an emergency landing. These kinds of incidents led Swissair to be among the first to move toward buying the Ivas technology. They had approved it and were intent on going ahead with it and had a change of heart because of the downturn in the airline industry. At $20,000 per plane. Airlines have been reluctant to purchase the technology. I mean, the cost is relatively trivial. It's less than any particular passenger. Last year, the National Transportation Safety Board asked the FAA to evaluate the system and take action as appropriate. The FAA's response was that it approves of the technology but does not intend to mandate it. This latest crash involving smoke in the cockpit could put the whole problem back on the radar screen for further action. But meanwhile, no domestic commercial airliners are using it. Katie, the situation still remains the same down there on 95 as you head towards Catonsville. Four lanes still blocked and we're still dealing with only the left lane and left shoulder getting by an accident at that point. So be prepared to use 895. Not doing too bad there. Several families in Elkridge are homeless after finding out that gas is leaking into their homes. Kai Jackson was there when the neighborhood met to discuss their options. Most residents in Calvert Ridge have only been here a few months. Now three homes are deemed unsafe because of a high level of an explosive gas. There's a rumor that the area was built on a landfill, but that isn't confirmed. We need to gather the facts. But one of my greatest concerns right now is certainly this was never disclosed to us and the purchasing process. And I did go through the contract of that home last night, all of our paperwork.
