The shared flight between Swissair and Delta was headed from New York to Geneva, Switzerland, when it was forced to make an emergency landing. Our Jeffrey Kauffman has the latest from Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. As the sun rises on the Nova Scotia coast. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are reporting that 18 bodies have now been recovered from Swissair flight one, 11 two have been brought ashore. 16 more are aboard a Canadian Navy vessel. And there is a flotilla of Navy Coast Guard and fishing fishing boats out there about seven miles offshore searching for debris and, of course, four bodies. This driving rain in the swollen seas is not making this uneasy recovery effort. In Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. Jeffrey Kauffman, CBC News reporting. And Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reporter Rob Gordon viewed the grim crash site from the boat and spoke with it with CBC Anchor Normally MacLeod. It's a really horrific and eerie scene. The whole place is lit by by flares dropped from helicopters and airplanes. There's dozens of fishing boats out there, several Canadian warships and Coast Guard cutters. As we move through on the fishing boat I was on, we could see pieces of the airplane. At one point, we were right beside the deflated life raft. There's a lot of life jackets and unfortunately, bodies and pieces of bodies are repeatedly every 30s. Fishermen were calling to the Canadian Navy vessel saying, I found a body. I need more body bags. I've just got some I need more body bags. It's just a horrific, terrible scene. And obviously no survivors have been spotted in the water. I know people are looking for survivors. They've got very large searchlights on a lot of fishing boats, 3 or 4 helicopters just going back and forth.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136712/file/253420#t=120.99,234.54"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136712/file/253420/transcript/71559/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It is it is still a desperate search for survivors, but there is absolutely no hint whatsoever that anybody has survived. Like I say, they're finding parts of people and bodies, small bits of rubble, I guess pieces of the aircraft perhaps this big was the biggest piece I saw. In fact, the life raft, the fleet of a life raft was bigger than any piece of debris. Give me a sense of the mood out there. It's terrible. The mood is terrible. The fishermen are. They're down on the VHF radio. They're asking for body bags. They're pleading at some point for the Navy to come and take bodies off their boats. They don't want any more bodies on their boats, yet they keep finding bodies. We saw two life rafts, both torn up and a lot of lifejackets floating around it. Now, you were out with a fisherman. Was he one of the people who heard this tremendous noise that signaled that something was wrong? No, he didn't hear the noise. He keeps his boat near Blanford, which is very close to the search scene, went to his boat because of all the hubbub around town. And we went out with him. He was out searching and I guess we were, too. Now, CBS News aviation expert Bobby Orr joins us from our Washington bureau with details about that flight's final minutes. Good morning, Bob. Good morning, Jane. You know, looking at those pictures, it's eerily reminiscent of the Flight 800 disaster just two years ago. You know, the debris floating on the water, even the number of people aboard, 229 aboard this plane, 230 aboard 800. Both planes, jumbo jets down in the water. There were 229. Now, obviously, investigators need to find out what happened to that airplane that took it down into the waters off the coast of Nova Scotia. And a team of NTSB investigators left the Washington, D.C. area just a short time ago. There are six crash experts headed up to help the Canadian authorities and also three family assistance members who will be going to JFK Airport to help the families. We do have one early clue about what may have gone wrong as the plane was climbing out over Nova Scotia in Route four Geneva. There was a problem on board. The pilot apparently told the air traffic controllers in Canada there was smoke in the cockpit. At that point, he declared an emergency and tried to turn around for the nearest airport. That nearest airport, of course, was Halifax. And as far as I can be told by sources, they tracked him on radar down to perhaps 1000ft and then they lost track of the airplane. Of course, we now know the plane went down in the North Atlantic. So, Jeanne, there are not very many answers, but it's a scene we've seen frighteningly before. Barbara in Washington, thanks. And as Bob Weir pointed out earlier this morning, this scene is just eerily reminiscent of what we experienced in July of 1996. Do you see similarities? You know, it looks like it. You know, the floating debris, the bodies on the surface, the chaos, the the stunned folks from the Coast Guard and other private boaters that are seeing this carnage, it looks very similar. Aside from the video, Mr. Kallstrom, would you at this point draw any other similarities and what may have caused the crash? I think it's much too early, Jeanne. You know, we just don't know. In this case, we have some words from the cockpit, so we have a little more to go on. We have a much newer airplane, which means the black boxes will probably have a lot more data on them. But we have 100 and, what, 50ft of water? We've got 229 people of all ages. We've got the tremendous emotional sadness of the event and we have all the technical challenges of the event. It looks like also a challenge because this time it's not a U.S. investigation. It's the United States and Canada. What do you foresee in that relationship? Well, the Canadians, it's their investigation. I'm sure the United States will help them there. In my experiences, they're brilliant. I mean, they have great people in the RCMP. I'm sure they have them in their civilian investigative agencies. They have a great Coast Guard and a great Navy. So I think they're well equipped to deal with this. The good news is that none of the countries, including the United States, do this very often. Thank God. Absolutely. James Kallstrom, we will continue to speak with you throughout the morning. I'm just a spokesperson for the Halifax Rescue Coordination Center. And I can tell you that at 1030, the aircraft was lost from radar by the Halifax International Airport. And at 1239 local time, the rescue teams arrived on site to begin their rescue operation. And how extensive was that investigation of that operation? The McDonnell Douglas, MD 11, en route to Geneva crashed last night about an hour after taking off from New York's Kennedy Airport. All 229 people on board were killed, including 136 Americans. The pilot had reported smoke in the cockpit and tried to make an emergency landing in Nova Scotia. They requested an emergency landing in Halifax, the closest airport about 30 miles south of the airport. The aircraft disappeared from the radar screens. Hey, listen, let's go ahead and start the weather presentation. I got a lot to talk about. We have got some haze in the area right now. It's slightly humid. It's not extremely close, but it certainly is a little bit human right now. And I got to tell you, we've got a lot of pollen in the region right now. Let's go ahead and call it 64 this day. A high pollen count, primarily ragweed through the afternoon. Now, let's talk a little weather here. And we've got to start talking about Tropical Storm Earl.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136712/file/253420#t=4442.21,4540.48"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136712/file/253420/transcript/71559/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Earl is going to start to be a problem for our weather. There's been a change in the dynamic over the past couple of hours. And let's talk about this once again. You know, Earl, I'm using the hurricane symbol for lack of a better symbol, but Earl is a huge slug, moisture really raising cane throughout Georgia and the Carolinas. Now, we still got high pressure running our weather and we still got a front coming into the region with high pressure backing that front up. But we're starting to get indications right now that Earl Bashir will going to force himself into the area, a dominant influence of this high pressure system. And then a lot of this moisture may actually pass through central Virginia toward coastal Maryland. And it certainly is not impossible, as Earl now really starts to make inroads into the mid Atlantic, that we could see some stormy conditions along the coast tomorrow, certainly some stormy conditions along the Virginia capes. So this is a a developing weather situation that we will monitor throughout the course of this day. Once again, it's high pressure running all weather and I will block out the vast majority of Earl. But this big boy's got a full head of steam and wants to bring himself up in a northerly direction. High clouds in the area and out. Yep. That's the northernmost extent of Earl's Cloud shield. 79 south for now. 76 down the ocean, 83 degrees, a little bit off to our south and west. And no place is there a reference that the home was built on top of the landfill. I don't believe they've determined whether or not we'd have methane tomorrow versus today. I believe that's something we need to monitor, which is why we're putting detectors in the basement. It's believed the gas is methane, which is created by decaying vegetable matter. But Howard County authorities don't know that for sure, and only tests will determine it conclusively. It's an explosive gas and you get the right concentration. It could cause damage to your house and anybody in it. Right now, there are a number of tests that have to be done before Calvert Ridge residents will likely feel safe in their homes. Kathy Jackson, WJC. Eyewitness News. Boy. Well, this story brings up all kinds of legal questions, such as who is responsible? Who would pay for this for the loss of homes? And do the homeowners lose everything now? I mean, are they literally walking away with nothing? Dick is here. Yes. You know, this is going to be a tough situation because you've got to look at responsibility here. I mean, is it necessary, for example, that the builder is necessarily lively or what would happen if you had, you know, your home and let's say a sinkhole opened up five years after you buy the place, Would you go and say, I'm going to go after that, you know, builder or the seller? Once title passes, that's it. Unless two things fraud or negligence. If the homeowners could show either fraud or negligence, then they can say, okay, I think somebody else is liable here. But other than that, hey, you know, if you had a problem with your home after you've been in there for a while, that's your problem. You've got the risk. Well, one of the things I imagine many people think of immediately is, will my insurance cover this? What do you think? Well, you know, we in this year, we had remember a few years back, we had some earthquake things and people ran out and got earthquake coverage. There is not really that I've ever heard of this kind of coverage for these kinds of events. This is. But you know, what is there coverage if your house ends up on some kind of a toxic landfill? Generally not in the residential area. There isn't commercial kinds of things, but I've never heard of it really in the residential area. Well, let's deal with negligence and fraud then. What if the people who bought the development and the developers knew there had been a landfill there? Is that fraud or not? Well, if they, for example, if they knew and didn't disclose, okay, then there could be an issue of fraud. That would be the allegation. Negligence would be something like, you know, if they had just looked here, they would have found such and such. They didn't look there. And therefore, that's negligence.
