It is a good boy. I'd like to introduce you to my dog, Nielsen. You may remember the staff gave me Nielsen as a birthday present back in May. Nielsen has been just a wonderful dog. You don't have to walk him or feed him or water him. And terrific companion, too. But Nielsen doesn't have any real special skills, unlike Herbert Beagle, a very special dog that you're going to meet now. Herbert Beagle, unlike poor Nielsen here, put Snoopy to shame. Let's find out why. Well, here's a riddle for you. What has four legs costs thousands of dollars and comes with a cute little nose that just can't miss. If you answered Herbie the termite sniffing beagle, you've hit the jackpot. Boy. At £25, one and a half year old Herbie is revolutionizing the pest control industry with his uncanny ability to locate termites where no one else can, no human, that is. He's saving homeowners a lot of grief and a lot of cash. Maybe that's why he takes his job so seriously. You can actually see the termites going around in your. Although it. He's a good boy. This is a story of mystery and intrigue. A day in the life of a private detection dog pitting man against nature, termite against dog. It begins at 830, a small suburb in the Baltimore Washington area. Inspector Gary Gilley responding to a call first searches the house with the standard flashlight and screwdriver. Inspector Gillie doesn't see anything visibly, so he goes to get the dog. We don't say anything visibly, so let's go get the dog. Find out for sure what he had. Any termites or not. Get him out of there somewhere. See, I know the areas as an inspector that are conducive for to termite infestation.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76295/file/162495#t=229.33,363.69"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76295/file/162495/transcript/38958/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So I actually structure the search. I show the dog where to look and if there's anything behind those walls. Or he goes on alert. He goes digging. Digging those. Seven out of ten years. Boy, Kevin Allen. Good for us. And still another successful mission for Herbie. Oh, I've also looked at the 14 years I've been here. I've kept my eye open, never seen any traces or any tracks. I think it's very unusual. I'm quite pleased so that if I've got him, I want him to find them. And now that they've been found, will have him treated. Now, Herbie has been making a lot of news lately, along with his friends Mickey, the attack cat and Cavani, the fearless poodle. They are part of the unusual assortment of animals assembled by Bob Altman. Bob is the head of Prion Animal Institute and works in California, where the dogs are trained and then leased to pest control companies. He is the true two legged genius behind the animals. Herbie is a product of almost five years of work. The way he came about, the way the whole concept came about, is I bought a house with termites that said there was no termites. I found termites. Call the termite inspector out. He crawled all over the house, and I still don't know if I have any more termites. So I figured we use dogs for absolutely everything. All types of work and serve mankind ever since the beginning. So why not? In termite detection, Bob's work is highly acclaimed and is making him famous. In fact, a few years ago he was asked to find and train a guide dog for Patty Hearst. And today, Patty is his employee. She rears termite sniffing dogs. It's what the future holds for Bob and his company that's really sparking interest, though it's rumored that dogs may be used as part of a lie detector test and perhaps to sniff out cancer.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76295/file/162495#t=364.71,494.83"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76295/file/162495/transcript/38958/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"There are so many things that they can do for us. They are incredible. Sometimes I think, my gosh, how can a dog do that? It's 2 p.m. after a brief nap in his mobile office. Herbie is rested and ready to go, this time with extra assistance from entomologist Jerry Borkowski. Herb is routinely brought out in his favorite carrying case. Now it's time to get going. We really do. Come on. I'm going to get them away. Yeah. This dog is incredible, truly amazing. At first I was very skeptical myself about the whole idea. But as a professional entomologist, I've done some research and had a study of this myself, and I've definitely come to the conclusion that this dog works. And through his senses of smell and hearing, he can actually determine and pinpoint exact termite infestation locations. See. When Herbie sticks his nose to the ground, it's a good sign. If he turns up nothing except his tail. That means that the house, a huge investment, is termite free. If you go out and spend, say, $70,000 for a home, you buy fire insurance and homeowner's policies to protect against theft and fire floods and any other natural causes. But you don't have a term life insurance policy per se. That is where Herbie comes into play. The whole neighborhood heard about it, and everybody was enthusiastic when they heard it. You certainly seen it in what he did and the places that he looked to, regular termite inspectors, really being able to get into some of the locations where he went. And so it's the end of another workday and certainly a job well done for Herbie, the termite sniffing dog. He asks for dinner. It's his only reward, and he hardly deserves the job.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76295/file/162495#t=495.7,631.36"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76295/file/162495/transcript/38958/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The story you have just seen is true.
