Hi, Melissa. Hi, Sally. I'll bet you that figure is even larger than the one you just gave because it's such gorgeous weather out. A lot of people headed down to the beach just for this day alone. A lot more than this day in 93 because, well, the weather is sunny and clear, unlike last year, which means at least it's nicer to sit in traffic at this time than it was last year. But then it's even nicer to sit on the beach this weekend. Oh, this is my tan. His tan is just darker than mine. I used the dark tanning solution this weekend. Columnist Alice Steinbach is here to talk about the changing face of war. Well, sadly, the reasons for going to war are never simple. But up through World War Two, at least, the troops who put their lives on the line knew why they were fighting. In the past, we sent our young people off to war in the name of justice and self-defense. But all that began to change with the Korean War and then the war in Vietnam. It started to become less clear why young Americans were being asked to defend countries and people they had hardly heard of. But in the years since Vietnam, the reasons for sending our sons and daughters to fight and die in places like Somalia and Kuwait and Panama have become even harder to understand. For over a year, America's agonized over whether to send troops to Bosnia, and now the United Nations is pleading for troops to go into war torn Rwanda. But so far, most countries, including the United States, have refused to send troops there. Too many wars and too many places being fought for reasons we don't understand have numbed and confused us. Where once we knew who the enemy was. Now it's harder to draw a line between them and us.
