Good evening everyone. The jury says that Jason's along was insane and not responsible for the murders, but he still faces a long time in prison. Suzanne Collins, who's been following the trial, is live in Carroll County to explain the jury's verdict. Suzanne. Well, Richard, it's a very complex verdict. Now, when Jason DeLong was stabbed or stabbed, his mother, I should say more than 80 times, and her boyfriend more than 30 times, the jury says that he was insane and not criminally responsible. But yet they also say when he plotted the killing of his mother the day prior with his girlfriend, Sarah Citron, the jury says he was clear of mind, saying it's a weird and unusual verdict and the lawyers are calling it a compromise verdict. DeLong will go to Clifton Perkins Hospital for the criminally Insane first because he's criminally insane, and yet he faces hard prison time at a later date because he's guilty for conspiring to commit murder. After the first stab. 85 stabs just to his mother. Sure, the rage took over, and, there's no question it is overkill. I mean, I don't think any of us disagreed about that ever. And yet you did not find him, insane during the planning. How does that differ? Because his intelligence quotient was 115. He's not a raving, raging, insane person all the time, but it's a question as to whether or not he was responsible. In other words, knew what he was doing was wrong and could have controlled his actions at the moment that he took them. Or any other prison? Suzanne? Well, that isn't a prison now. That's a mental hospital. And it's such a strange situation. He'll be at Perkins until doctors or psychiatrists deem him not a danger to himself or others. That could be any amount of time. On average, for murder cases, it's about six years. Then there would be a detainer for him to go to prison. The amount of time a judge is going to sentence him on November 23rd, we'll learn that in a couple of months. All right, Suzanne, thank you very much for that update on the jury's verdict, reporting live tonight from Carroll County. Well, just a couple of weeks into the new school year, there's already an incident of a gun in a city school. A 16 year old student at Southern High School was arrested this morning for having a handgun on school property. Police say the teen was stopped for carrying a beeper in a hallway. A search turned up crack cocaine and a 25 caliber gun, and a 70 year old grandmother becomes a victim of violence. Charlotte Perry is still in shock over what happened in front of her Harlem Avenue home early Sunday, as she waited for her ride to church. A man jumped out of a car and grabbed her purse. She chased after him. I could not believe it. And I said, this is making a mistake. So I ran down and said, it's mine, it's mine. Give it back to me. And I'm running down in the middle of the street. Harlem Avenue was quiet today, but the suspect's hat was still in the street, a reminder to its many elderly residents that seniors can be prime targets for young criminals. Just about everyone here on Harlem Avenue was home early Sunday morning when Charlotte Perry was robbed. And when neighbors heard her scream, they responded immediately. People assume that an elderly neighborhood does not have a quick response time, but as soon as they heard Mrs. Perry screaming, neighbors were out quickly. We, all came down in a hurry. And, as we as I said before, we all very close knit. This is a very close knit, neighborhood, a neighborhood which has seen its share of crime, but where people like Charlotte Perry and others work with city police to make it a better place. Neighbors really do watch out for one another. And when something's not right, are not afraid to come right out to see what's going on. And city police tonight are continuing to look for the suspect on this, the second day of the U.S. military operation in Haiti. There is concern tonight about the safety of American soldiers there. The Pentagon's top general says Americans could get caught in the middle of clashes between Haitians. Reporter Nathan Thomas has the latest tonight from port au Prince. Throughout the day, there were clashes between the Haitian military government and those awaiting the return of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The. Crowds of Aristide supporters, feeling a newfound freedom following the agreement of the generals to give up power, gathered in the port area to watch the arrival of the American troops, who they call their saviors. Government troops and police use tear gas and clubs to try to break up the crowds, who responded by throwing rocks a week ago. Aristide supporters would never have challenged the authority of the police or military. Now they do, expecting the Americans will protect them. But about the only help they are getting is the police are a little less brutal than they used to be, knowing they are being watched. American soldiers who are not being attacked directly are not getting involved in clashes between Haitians. They drive right by and do nothing. I have been from the very beginning of this operation, very much concerned about getting our military men and women caught up in this Haitian on Haitian violence, that murky sort of a threat out there that's always there. And so a lot of times it can be in people's homes without them even knowing it. In Healthwatch, we find out what to do about carbon monoxide, the colorless, odorless fumes that can cause flu like symptoms and eventually death. 40 year old Venus Girl Litis is one of the thousands who die each year of carbon monoxide poisoning, deaths that could be prevented with proper detection. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas. That's sort of a byproduct of any any time that you burn something that's carbon containing things like wood, kerosene, gasoline, those kind of things are regular old gas from your, from your oven. Any time where you don't have complete combustion of that fuel, you're going to develop some carbon monoxide at a Baltimore Gas and Electric service center. We met Mike Griffin. He showed us what to do to ensure your furnace or chimney works properly. If you can turn the furnace on and wait till it, heats up and then run a lighted match along the, skirt of the what we call the draft diverter. A normal drawing type of appliance will pull the flame up into the chimney. If there's a block chimney, it'll blow the the match out. That means carbon monoxide could be in your home. The major cause of carbon monoxide poisoning is poor ventilation. Which is why you shouldn't sit in your car with the engine on and the windows rolled up for long periods of time during the cold months. Don't use your gas stove for heat either. Without proper ventilation, that could also lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. One of the symptoms that you get is increased sleepiness. You can also get things like headaches, nausea, vomiting, difficulty concentrating, all the way up to developing coma and death.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980#t=658.35,767.88
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980/transcript/71304/annotation/8
But don't wait for symptoms to develop before you do something. It'll be probably another month before it gets too old for the animal to survive. My concern earlier was that it wouldn't have enough to eat, but somebody else stated that it was a vegetarian, so food wouldn't be a problem. So I just hope that someone's been contacted to come and rescue the animal so they can get it back to warmer waters before. It's a shame that they would do something like this to somebody else's exercise to keep him up. Other than that, he'd be run down if he didn't have his exercise because that's what built him up. All I'm asking is just bring it back. No questions asked. I just love to have it back. I don't know who who could do this. Just like taking away legs. I just hope they realize what they did.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980#t=1267.57,1365.4
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980/transcript/71304/annotation/14
If you have seen Garland's wheelchair bike or know anything about it, you can call the Anne Arundel County Police anonymously at the number on your screen. Thousands of workers stayed home today, but they didn't call in sick. They were taking part in Telecommuting Day. AT&T sponsored the experiment to see if it could increase productivity. Here's Mike McCullough with a computer programmer for a team working at AT&T. It was kind of a change for me having to, it's not really dressing up, but it's a casual business attire and it seems kind of stagnant to me. It seems like I'm more productive with pair of sweats and a and a t shirt on than I'm, you know, at work. It's a suit and tie. AT&T said that it expected to see a 10 to 15% increase in productivity with telecommuting, but got more like 40% instead. Some 30,000 people around the country participated in telecommuting day, and patients and staff members at Johns Hopkins Children's Center certainly got a few special visitors today. And that is making John's Neighborhood News tonight. Yeah, some of those, Charm City fellers, Richard, were on the case today over the children's center, trying to lift some spirits and answer perhaps a few questions about the Canadian League. Today's visit, providing the children at Hopkins with a chance to get their minds off of being hospital patients and just be kids for a little while, they got to meet five Baltimore CFL players. Michael Anderson, Ken Watson and Michael Brooks were few of those who had a chance to tour the hospital and hold a little mini news conference to give the children over there a chance to ask questions about the Canadian game and what it's like to be a professional football player.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980#t=1367.38,1472.17
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980/transcript/71304/annotation/15
Some of the children who were unable to actually meet and talk with the players in person because of their condition will get to watch, a tape of the visit on closed circuit television where they're feeling a little bit better. Making Eyewitness News A Carroll County jury has handed down a verdict in the case of the 19 year old accused of killing his mother and her boyfriend. Jason DeLong was found not criminally responsible for the stabbings, but guilty on a conspiracy charge. He'll face sentencing sometime in November. Meantime, DeLong will be sent to the Clifton T Perkins State Hospital. A 16 year old student at Baltimore's Southern High School has been arrested for having a handgun on school property. Police say the teen was stopped for carrying a beeper. Then a search turned up a 25 caliber gun, as well as some crack cocaine. And an endangered aquatic mammal has turned up near Kent Island, and people are worried the manatee may not survive the chilly waters of the Chesapeake Bay. So experts are hoping it finds its way south before the bay gets too cold. Voters are warned to make way for the manatee. And this is a true of love for us. Square by square. Hundreds of little quilts come together not for these women's infants or grandchildren, but for babies and toddlers they've never met and never will. At risk babies born with Aids, addicted to drugs, affected by alcohol, struggling to survive. The babies didn't ask to be born sick and they should be warm and comfortable and loved. I like to help, to do things for people that can't do things for themselves and the little children that need this, but appreciate it. The Creative Needle Magic Shop in Carney is bustling as these women take over. Holding a week long ABC will take on part of a national program to blanket area hospitals with love. We give them the quilt so they have something to hold on to when they're getting their needles or their special procedures, and it it's a loving comfort to them to have something of their own and someone's really feeling their parents are really caring about it. Just. Kind of give them, touch them with your hand and just give them that touch. They'll feel better. And I would hold over this one of them and rock them if I could back here. So this is what we do and everybody can do. Sometimes some quilts are delivered. How about this? Oh, I like that. Oh, we like that. I try to, I'm a pretty happy person, so I do smile a lot, I admit that. Yeah. You know, your sport has been in the news here the last month for, not a particularly appealing reason. It seems that there, that there either is an isolated or perhaps to a degree, widespread problem with, especially female gymnasts with anorexia. What are your thoughts on that? And, and how do you think it's affected the game that meant so much to you? Well, it's a tragedy. Obviously, I think anorexia nervosa and bulimia are two diseases that can be treated. And, young women and young men, I guess, suffer from it, too. Should not die from it. However, I don't think it's just a gymnastics problem, John. I believe it's a societal problem. Automobiles are potential hazards. Absolutely. Yeah. Like in the garage or whatever. Okay. You've got some different devices here. Should everyone have one of these devices? Up until this point, I don't think too many people really think two years ago, you could not get a carbon monoxide detector. The price was so high. Was over $800 for the detector itself. Kidding. The crowds of Aristide supporters, feeling a newfound freedom following the agreement of the generals to give up power, gathered in the port area to watch the arrival of the American troops, who they call their saviors. Government troops and police used tear gas and clubs to try to break up the crowds, who responded by throwing rocks a week ago. I wanted them protected for the future because antiques are not replaceable. One of the gifts, a desk, is on display at the foundation's Parker House. Her gifts were given in the 80s and some of the gifts, as I understand them because I wasn't here at the time, were given when we had some plans to use one of our buildings as a guest house, and that no longer is even contemplated. So we didn't need these items. I got a letter from the present president, and she said they were going to auction my things on the Eastern Shore. I was in a state of shock. Mrs. Taussig went to court to stop the auction. Oh. Very sorry. She's so distraught. She obviously didn't have the same understanding that we did. You know, from our paperwork, we believe that these items are owned unconditionally. When Mrs. Taussig made the donations, she signed this deed of gift specifying the gifts title would be given without restriction as to exhibition placement, use or ultimate disposition.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980#t=4648.9,4754.32
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980/transcript/71304/annotation/43
Mrs. Taussig says that should include the right to sell them. The best thing is, if you give something to a museum you have to be willing to part with. It. Absolutely trust the museum in the future and different generations to deal with the object as they best can. This dispute may soon be resolved. The board of directors at the Historic Annapolis Foundation will meet on Thursday to consider a settlement offer, and hopes that it can be resolved without going to court. The City Solicitor's Office must decide if a South Baltimore man is owed about $30,000 in back taxes for war wounds he suffered more than 50 years ago. In his commentary tonight, Michael Kors says Joseph Patch has already paid a very heavy price. Baltimore one off to World War two and was very lucky to have come back alive half a century ago. In the post D-Day battle for France, Joseph Peche had half his face blown away by shrapnel. He was found by GIS who thought he was dead and were stunned to find his heart still beating. Peche spent 18 months in Army hospitals before coming home, minus an I minus part of his brain, with many medals and with what the army called 100% disability. He married, raised six children. 30 years after the war, he managed to buy his first house he never knew of. A state law passed in 1950, which granted a property tax exemption to all World War Two veterans who were 100% disabled. Belatedly, Joe Peche wants that exemption with interest.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980#t=4755.43,4860.86
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980/transcript/71304/annotation/44
It's about $30,000. The Board of Estimates has heard his argument and sent it to the City Solicitor's office for a ruling. This one should be a no brainer. Michael. It's shy, it's big, and it doesn't belong here. But a manatee is exactly what has shown up in the waters around Kent Island. Alex Demetric reports. No one is sure what the endangered animal is doing so far north. People are just hoping it finds its way home before cold weather kills it. It comes and goes like light on water and people have been seeing it. It mirrors marine on Kent Island from gray. Can you remind me a little bit, maybe of a hippopotamus eating off the bottom of boats. Came up and got a little bit of air. Went back down. There was 30, 40 people standing around watching and taking pictures. This is one of the better pictures of the Kent Island manatee surfacing to drink chilled water from a boat's hull. Normally, this large aquatic mammal lives in the warm waters of Florida and Georgia. A shy, gentle and endangered animal, one has never been seen as far north as Kent Island. Before I was with my son Logan, he said, why don't you go and watch the manatee? And I was like, Manatee appears so in there. He was true to life. Why the manatee is this far north is a matter of pure speculation, a warm current, a poor sense of direction. Or perhaps it's just sick. But locals think they do know why it is reluctant to leave.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980#t=4861.34,4958.15
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136392/file/252980/transcript/71304/annotation/45
This is the first year that we've had grass on the bottom in years in the Marina, and it's got to be eating the grass that's on the bottom. There are two threats facing the manatee. The first is boats because they are slow swimmers. Poles and propellers have whittled the manatees to the edge of extinction. The second is temperature. Waters in the bay are warm now, but won't be much longer. But actually the waters around here are still fairly warm. It'll be probably another month before it gets too old for the animal to survive. The water is warm enough right now, but if it doesn't get help, I'm afraid it might die. And because it moves so slowly, the island manatee may find itself in a life or death race trying to out swim colder weather even as it sets in. Alex Demetric, channel 13 Eyewitness News Federal and state wildlife experts have no plans to capture and move the manatee, but they're warning boaters to give the animal the right of way, hopefully, as it finds its own way back down the bay. We hope you think there is something we could do. And in all seriousness, that's why they came. But I guess you can't you can't just go in and take it. And I guess if they could get them, they could probably taking them to warmer waters, I guess would be expensive. Yeah, it would be, I'm sure 95 South. That's why you need to sign that. And looks like we might see some real possibilities of rain later in the day. Thursday, a system down to our south is beginning to take shape. In fact, it looks like it's going to start to move up the coast and it could become a bit of a northeaster by the end of the week. That could bring us some decent rains in the Baltimore region, and for the Baltimore area east by Thursday night and throughout the day on Friday. By Saturday, maybe a break and then another system out west. We'll drag a cold front through here Saturday night and Sunday. Behind that, some chilly air, very unstable air, which would give us a lot of clouds on Sunday and maybe some showers. You can see this system to our south already beginning to take place.
