A truce that lasted 24 hours ended in Beirut early today as Syrian guns have opened fire on right -wing Christian militiamen in the streets of that city. Artillery and mortar fire were reported heavy tonight, but not as heavy as three days of the fighting that preceded the temporary ceasefire. At this hour, hospitals report that emergency rooms are filled with sniper victims. Tonight, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin has returned home after a short stay in the hospital for what doctors are calling fatigue. He says that his country will not tolerate a declaration of a Palestinian state by the autonomous authority slated to run the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Begin says such a move would violate the Camp David Accords and bring forth the danger of death for the Jewish state. Tonight, the strategic arms limitation talks between Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko continue in Washington. The president may have tipped Vance's hand when he publicly admitted the United States is using satellites to spy on other nations. Vance says that there has been much progress during the talks between the two nations but an agreement is still in the offing. And tonight the man who successfully hijacked a Finnish jetliner yesterday is in jail. The man who held 14 women hostage on the plane until he was given $168 ,000 in ransom money was allowed to go home from the Helsinki airport but police followed him and surrounded the house. Just hours ago they stormed the single frame structure. No one was injured though. Some shots were fired Tonight, the man's identity remains a secret, but he is in Helsinki jail. Tonight, police in Rome are searching for the terrorist group that bombed three buildings there overnight. One policeman was hit with shrapnel as the devices detonated. Two of the blasts gutted the offices of the Italian neo -fascist movement. The other bomb destroyed a sporting goods store. Tonight, Roman police say the bombing is the work of a leftist group in retaliation for Thursday's killing of a radical student by a right -wing group. Tonight also in Rome, thousands of mourners are passing by the body of Pope John Paul I, who died of a heart attack early Friday morning. Plans for his funeral have been made by the members of the College of Cardinals. Services will be held on Wednesday in St. Peter's Square, and the process of selecting a new pope has already begun. Baltimore's Lawrence Cardinal Sheen has been summoned to Rome, but will not vote in the secret conclave. Tonight, Pope John Paul's hometown, Forno di Canale, is in an official mourning period for the Lake Pontiff. The town has been the subject of much publicity in the Italian media of late. The house where young Alvino Luciani grew up has become a shrine in the small central Italian village. And tonight there was a long line of mourners in front of that modest home. Makes a pass after he bobbled the snap to Richard Osborne. The Colts take over. They gambled a little bit. Fourth and one here. Bill Troup on a bootleg. Watched the stick he gets from Charles Williams, and he fails to pick it up. Well, second period after a missed Philly field goal. Troup finds Glenn Dowdy. Bill had a pretty good first half, but the second half had some problems. Dowdy trying to outrace the Eagles. Cannot do so, but puts the Colts in good position. Few plays later, Roosevelt leaks up the middle. The extra point, and the Colts are up in the second period seven and nothing. Later the Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski on a bootleg of his own. Watch what happens here. He gets hit by Dwight Harrison and John Dutton picks up the football and carries it past the 40 yard line and the Colts are in business. Watch this one. Joe Washington pitches back to Troup who cranks up and goes long to Roger Carr. Pass interference and the Colts get it at the one but they could not score on a fourth and one. Ron Lee despite what Troup says did not get in and that hurt the Colts. But a few plays later, look at him on stack in there. A few plays later, handoff to Wilbert Montgomery, and he fumbles his hit by Ed Sinanini. Darrell Luce picks it up and takes it down to about the two. Now with about a minute and a half left in the first half, troop finds Leakes coming out of the backfield into the end zone, and it's 14 -0 at intermission. But in the fourth, the Eagles got on the board. Ron Jaworski to tight end Kempel, and it's 14 to 7. Thanks for watching! Tony Lindhardt missed a short field or a 46 yard field goal. Not an enjoyable day today for Billy Hunter. He was fired as the manager of the Texas Rangers. You remember Hunter, the former Oriole coach, visited us an instant eye on the last Ranger trip into the town, and the Rangers had started making a run, but overall, the team was a disappointment. They had lots of high -priced talent going into today. They were five out of first, though. Hunter recently signed a one -year deal, and even though the Rangers owner, Brad Quirt, wanted him to sign a five -year contract, some Ranger players claim they couldn't communicate with Hunter. Rangers replaced him with third base coach Pat Corrales. The club has asked Hunter to stay with the organization. Be interesting to see if he comes back to Baltimore. So I'll just go sun's type. You don't mind today? Thank you Don. Well we got by this afternoon with only a little bit of rain. I thought we were gonna see a lot more. Unless you live on the eastern shore. Some of the areas on the eastern shore got over an inch. I expected some of that here but we really just haven't gotten much here in Baltimore. And that's all right I guess. Even though we still do need some rain as we go into the fall and winter season. Let's take a look what's happening right now. We have cloudy skies and we are getting a little bit of light rain here in Baltimore. and in some scattered areas to our south and east. Temperature 70, 21 Celsius, humidity 67%. The wind's northwest at around eight miles an hour. Barometer, well, you can almost set your barometer now because it's 29 .99 and probably the next hour will go up to 30 inches even and you can probably set your barometer and start reading barometric pressure readings with us. We were downtown within Sinai today at the inner harbor. Constellation Dock, as you can see, just a little bit of rain falling around here, not much. Take a step. Anybody want to push? Thanks for watching! See that? I can walk on water. Only in TV can you walk on water. Let's take a look at the map tonight, and I'll show you what's causing a little bit of rain, and most of it down to our south. Reason, a frontal system, which we saw last night out to our west, did move through the region today, and our winds have shifted to the north and west. We're beginning to start seeing clearing out in the western part of the state already and in western Pennsylvania. The frontal system extends from a low pressure system west of Maine down to central Florida, northern Florida, West or about Louisiana? Showers and thundershowers and scattered fashion along this front, most of them up to the north over northern New England and to our south or parts of the eastern shore and continuing over the south eastern part of the United States. So we're just kind of in an area where very little showers occurred, kind of dried up from the mountains. But in our in the to the west on the map we have sunshine today and a lot of beautiful weather coming in and once this front moves through we're going to have some beautiful fall days. Remember today is first day of October. So starting a new month. A little later in the week we have another frontal system which is beginning to move to the east. It won't change things very much. Might bring us a cloud or two on Wednesday and then still nice weather. So most of the week right now looks perfect. Temperature's nice too, 76, 71 in North Dakota, 69 or so in Minneapolis this afternoon, 66 in Chicago, the coolest area of this new air mass right over the Great Lakes. But it'll moderate as the week progresses, in fact as the day progresses. Tomorrow's map... Well, frontal system will already have disappeared. The next one will start to move in, as you can see, passing Chicago by tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures aren't going to change too much. 76 Chicago tomorrow, 76 in Richmond, 76 Atlanta, 67 the coolest spot up in Boston, Massachusetts. Around the state right now, we're getting some rain reports. Salisbury's had the heaviest amounts, about an inch and a half in Salisbury. We've had just a trace here in Baltimore. 67 in Westminster, 68 Harrisburg, 71 in DC. 68 Richmond, 65 Salisbury. Northeasterly winds tomorrow from five to 10 knots on the bay with one foot waves. A pretty nice day to be out on the bay if you have the chance. One year ago today, kind of similar, high of 74, low of 59, with rain. Let's take a look at our forecast for the remainder of tonight. Maybe just a shower and then we'll have a clearing trend later on tonight. Temperatures in the 50s tomorrow. Mostly sunny, around 73 degrees, a perfect day. Tuesday about the same, 74 degrees. Wednesday a few clouds with that new front coming in around 76 degrees and 76 on Thursday and 76 on Friday Also with a lot of sun so a really nice week Make some plans if you have a chance to take vacation do
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907#t=1282.7,1502.84
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907/transcript/77109/annotation/34
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907#t=1504.32,1505.74
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907/transcript/77109/annotation/35
Speaker 12: Yes, once you take three or four weeks, it's tough to get back, isn't it?
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907#t=1505.37,1509.07
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907/transcript/77109/annotation/36
Speaker 2: it certainly is thank you very much and have a nice october and happy new year thank you regardless of whether right now jazz sounds are filling the streets of fells point today is the second day of the twelfth annual fells point festival everyone can enjoy sounds from several jazz quartets on stage at the fleet street bandstand too that's tonight at nine thirty but if you can get there before the show you can pick up some bargains at a flea market or enjoy a maritime art show and craft exhibit There's also polka dancing and continuous entertainment planned. for the whole day and of course on some days a nice glass of wine is enough entertainment for anyone now it seems that more and more people are choosing wine over hard liquor and wine producers are happy all their hard work is showing a profit because turning grapes into wine really is hard work
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907#t=1509.2,1555.68
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907/transcript/77109/annotation/37
Speaker 15: One of the most modern wineries operating today, the grapes are still picked by hand, and that's a dirty, tiring job. Machines have been invented, but most vineyards still prefer the workers who can be selective in what they pick or discard. And don't worry about all those leaves and stems you see in there, it gets sorted out down the road. The grapes are taken from the field in large hoppers where they're trucked to winery. This year, they expect about 1 .8 million tons of grapes will be dumped into the crusher, just like you see here. And right here is where the stems, leaves, and whatever else may have fallen into the hoppers, along with the grapes, get removed. What's left, only the grapes, the skin, and the juice. One more process here to extract the last of the unwanted products from the harvesting. Then the juice is pumped into the fermenting tanks, where it remains from anywhere from one week to six months. These tanks are all stainless steel. And in the tanks, the natural sugar in the grapes changes to alcohol and CO2. When the fermentation process is complete, the wine is then moved to other tanks or barrels for aging. They're all temperature controlled too, which is important in the aging process. The final step in the culmination of seven years of labor, both in the fields and in the aging tanks, that's the production line, where the bottles are filled, where their court, and finally where they're labeled. by hand put in the boxes to go off to the wholesaler and to you.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907#t=1557.44,1645.69
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907/transcript/77109/annotation/38
Speaker 2: There'll be a quiz later. Clouds along the east coast today as you can see with that frontal system that moved through, a lot of clouds. We missed most of the rain Marty. Up into the north we had rain, a lot down to the south, but right here in Maryland not much. Fair weather now coming in with this high pressure system should give us a couple of very, very nice days. So Marty, you're coming back to some very, very nice weather. Here's the frontal system off the Atlantic coast right now down to our south over parts of southeast Virginia as much as two inches of rain. and we got barely a trace here in Baltimore. And up to the north, almost two inches or so in Montreal. So we're right in between the areas of heavy rain, even over parts of Pennsylvania, they had as much as a half an inch of rain. Front's off the coast now. Nice weather coming in tonight. It'll be fair. Temperatures dropping into the low 50s. Tomorrow night, with high pressure moving east, we'll have lighter winds. And temperatures will go down to the upper 40s. But a nice, sunny day coming up tomorrow. Later in the week, this funnel system, which is out to the west. might bring us maybe just some clatterness on Wednesday, and then a continuation of some very, very nice sunny weather. 66 this afternoon in Cincinnati, 72 in Minneapolis. Got up to 91 degrees, a lot of sunshine, in North Platte, Nebraska, before that front came through. Cool things off a little bit there tomorrow. Let's take a look at tomorrow's map, and that'll show you that a lot of sun will be prevalent over the east. Temperatures will range gently from the 80s over Florida, once again, 84 in New Orleans, 70s through parts of that. Georgia, the Carolinas, and into southern Maryland, and maybe even the mid -70s. 67 or so up in Boston. The frontal system will be out to our west, past Chicago, moving in an easterly direction. Big mountain of beautiful weather out there. Look at that, double high pressure systems out there. Great weather. And this stuff will begin to dominate our weather picture actually on Wednesday throughout the rest of the week. It looks like a super, super week coming up. A little bit above normal for this part of October. where we normally have a high of around. 70 degrees and normally our loads are in the upper 40s to low 50s so we're going to be a little bit just a little bit above normal. 65 in Salisbury 66 Dover 61 up in Westminster 70 in DC 63 in Richmond north west excuse me north easterly winds coming in tomorrow on the bay from five to ten knots so it should be a good day to be out on the bay and way out in the west here I almost forgot your morgan town's down to 59 degrees right now one year ago today yes one year ago today. was October 1st, and we had some rain on October 1st the year ago today, 74, low of 59 degrees. Let's take a look at our forecast for tonight. Well, we've got clearing skies tonight. The stars are out from the Bay West, at least, and low temperatures tonight in the 50s. Get rid of this. And for Monday, that's tomorrow, a lot of sun, 73. A lot of sun on Tuesday, 74. A few more clouds on Wednesday, 76. And by Thursday and Friday, once again, beautiful. Temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. And 8 o 'clock tomorrow morning, Don, if you're up at 8 o 'clock in the morning, a very fine, sunny, and 58 degrees. So enjoy it. It's going to be a rather nice week, really nice week.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907#t=2730.54,2913.73
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907/transcript/77109/annotation/81
Speaker 2: Thank you very much, Bob. Colts gambled a little bit today. Ted Marchabroda not playing real conservative. Bill Troup on fourth and one fails to get the first down. In the second period, though, Troup hitting Glenn Dowdy. Watch this one. Glenn makes a nice catch and then cuts up the middle of the field, tries to outrun some Eagles. 46 -yard game. The Colts are in business. Eventually, Roosevelt Leakes scores on this two -yard run with the extra point by Tony Linhardt. It was 7 -0 to the Colts. Now, they got it right back when Ron Jaworski runs a bootleg of his own. Dwight Harrison hits him, he drops the ball, and John Dutton picks it up. He's got a little bit of an escort and picks up a few yards. First play after the recovery, watch the dipsy doodle here. Washington into the line, pitches back to Troup, he cranks it up. Roger Carr perhaps would have made the catch, except for pass interference. Colts get it at the one, and on fourth and one, cannot score. That certainly hurt them. Disregard the signal by Troup. It was no score for the Colts on that one. A few plays later though, Wilbert Montgomery, the ball is stripped by Ed Seminini, he fumbles and picking it up is Darryl Luce who takes it inside the five. Late in the half, Roosevelt leaks. We'll come out of the backfield and catch this one unmolested from Bill Troup and the Colts are on top at intermission 14 -0. In the fourth quarter though, the Eagles got it gone. Keith Crefley catches this one from Jaworski, 20 yards, extra point makes it 14 -7. Colts missed a field goal, the Eagles made one 14 -10. Less than four minutes left. The big guy, 6 '8", Harold Carmichael runs over a few guys and down to the 19 -yard line on a 44 -yard game. And this 14 -yard TD run by Wilbert Montgomery won it for the Eagles. He had 144 yards today. Colts' final chance. Well, that ended in a pass interception. Bill Troup intercepted here right from going. And after the game, Klaus Wagner inquired as to what Coach Ted Marchabroda said after the loss.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907#t=3066.03,3203.55
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144417/file/266907/transcript/77109/annotation/88
Speaker 19: He knows we're a good football team. The club said they felt a change was needed. Some players complained of a communication problem with Hunter. Just last year, the folks near Dallas were raving about Billy Hunter. This year, they had more high -priced players, and when they don't play well, it's very easy to blame the manager. Hunter had just signed a one -year contract. Competition was fierce at the inner harbor today also. American Indians from more than 35 tribes danced and sang their hearts out in an intertribal competition. These contests were part of the American Indian Festival, the last ethnic festival of the summer in the harbor. In today's affair, Indians demonstrated how they make arts and crafts, and they taught visitors a little bit about American Indians in Baltimore, too. Bear goers were also treated to Indian food and music during the day, of course. And Miss Baltimore American Indian was the hostess. And while the Indians were doing rain dances at the Inner Harbor, the folks at the Fells Point Festival were getting drenched. This afternoon was beautiful for the last day of the 12th annual Fells Point Festival, which sponsored a flea market with handmade arts and crafts for sale. There was also a maritime art and photography exhibition all weekend. And of course, the streets were filled with music for most of the weekend and Recreation Center was filled with dancing. This year's festival happily coincides with the Fells Point Jazz Festival. and finally the vacation we all missed starts tomorrow in genoa italy or at least the ship leaves from there the eugenio o is set to go on an all around the world cruise that will last two and a half months try to get that time off and with all the extras cost almost twenty five thousand dollars a person it's being called the cruise of the billionaires and marty is not on it and that's our report for the moment for those of us working and marty who's on vacation Thank you for watching us.
