Happy Friday, Jean. Good morning to you, Don. We still have problems on South Bank Avenue on the ramp, two southbound, 95 southbound, Kate, and remains closed as they continue to clear that fuel spill up from that accident. Traffic is being detoured around the area. Also, a very serious accident. Northbound falls close. That union medivac helicopter is on the way to respond to that. The White House is assessing the damage in Afghanistan and the Sudan and the political and diplomatic toll here at home. Following yesterday's missile strikes, we have reports from Tom Fenton in London and from Scott Pelley in Washington, DC. Overnight, US spy satellites have been over the target areas in Sudan and Afghanistan, making pictures of the battle damage there. Top officials here at the White House hope to have a complete battle damage assessment for the president's review first thing this morning.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136476/file/253061#t=2.57,100.61"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136476/file/253061/transcript/71194/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"There are reports today of at least 21 dead at the sites in Afghanistan, but those reports are from local news organizations and will certainly change as the day wears on. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, on the other hand, has expressed support. Officials here at the White House say U.S. law enforcement has been placed on alert nationwide, on the lookout for possible retaliation. The president is expected to return to Martha's Vineyard later this afternoon. Scott Pelley, CBS News at the White House. This is Tom Fenton in London. The American attacks on his terrorist training camps in Afghanistan are not likely to stop Osama bin Laden. A source familiar with the thinking and methods of the Saudi fundamentalist leader says he is heavily protected and constantly on the move. And although his extensive construction, business and financial interests in Muslim countries allow him to bankroll terrorist activities around the world, the operations he sponsors do not require an elaborate infrastructure. All it takes to bomb an American embassy, the source pointed out, is a few dedicated men and explosives. And bin Laden has plenty of both. In the wake of the American retaliatory raids, bin Laden may have a new groundswell of support in some Muslim countries. The question now is when and where his terrorist network will strike again. Tom Fenton, CBS News, London. Thank you, Tom. In the Sudan. And as Jean Ross mentioned several times, Fort George Mead is affected as well. Of course, the missile attacks have some people wondering if they were ordered to take attention away from the president's personal problems, namely Monica Lewinsky, who reappeared before the grand jury yesterday. Questions reportedly focused on her decision to return some gifts that she bought for the president and the timing of that. One of those gifts may become the new fashion range, of course. The tie Monica Lewinsky supposedly gave the president, the one he wore the first day of her testimony is the hottest item at the department store tie counters. Several retailers, including Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, say they've been swamped with calls from people asking for the $110 tie, prosecutors insinuated. And we know that it has been engaged in killing and other acts against innocents in the past. Bin Laden is said not to have been hurt in these attacks. Was that one of the objectives to try to take him up? We were not specifically targeting any individual and not specifically targeting bin Laden. We were targeting a probably the largest or one of the largest terrorist training facilities in the world. This is a facility that has trained thousands of people to engage in terrorist acts over the years. And we wanted to do some damage to its infrastructure, its capability, and to the terrorist groups and organizations that were gathered there. And Mr. Berger, can you tell us this morning, was it just cruise missiles involved in the attack? Were there any ground troops? Well, I don't want to go beyond what the Defense Department has said at this point.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136476/file/253061#t=1262.09,1372.82"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136476/file/253061/transcript/71194/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Let me say there certainly at this point are no ground forces on the ground. The message delivered with firepower was clear crush terrorism. There are no expendable American targets. There will be no sanctuary for terrorists. We will defend our people, our interests, and our values. We will help people of all faiths in all parts of the world who want to live free of fear and violence. We will persist and we will prevail. We acted to preempt future terrorist acts and disrupt the activities of those planning for them. Everybody loves that one. Yeah. We got a lot of drive bys here. We tell everybody it's really fun. Turn on top of the house. Now, is there really a telescope up there? Yeah. I'm not sure if you can see it. We're pointing at it now. Yeah, it's a it's a brass telescope. It's a 12 inch Newtonian reflector. It's a big reflector telescope. Do you use the telescope? A view from ground zero of U.S. airstrikes against terrorists. And a look at the dangerous target that may have escaped the attack. That's a big story making headlines this Friday, August the 21st, of course. And Jeanne is back with details for us. This morning, United States officials are warning of the possibility of retaliation against American targets. This in the wake of yesterday's US missile attacks on suspected terrorist sites in Sudan and Afghanistan. A chemical plant in Khartoum, Sudan, and alleged terrorist training camps in Afghanistan were hit. The cruise missile strikes were launched from U.S. ships in the Arabian and the red seas. Afghani officials say that at least 21 people were killed in the attack. President Clinton says he ordered the assault in retaliation for the U.S. embassy bombings in East Africa and to counter an immediate threat of more terrorist acts. There are no expendable American targets. There will be no sanctuary for terrorists. We will defend our people, our interests and our values. President Clinton says the targeted areas have been linked to exiled Saudi multi-millionaire Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden is described as the top financier of terrorist activities around the world. The United States blames him for the American embassy bombings. Although bin Laden reportedly denies any responsibility. Coming up in our next hour on this morning at 806, Target terror. Now, 744 and we've told you many times before how important it is to use sunscreen when you go outside. All right. In this morning's Medical Minute, Kelly Lane says it doesn't matter how dark a light your skin is, you should still lather it on. Good morning. Most people know how important it is for people with fair complexions to apply sunscreen. But how important is it for those with darker skin? The darker the skin, the more melanin that melanin gives brown or people more natural protection from burning. Very dark skin can provide protection equivalent to an SPF 12 to an SPF 30. That added protection does not eliminate the need for sunscreen, though. Sunscreens do more than just protect the skin from burning. They also filter out the longer UV rays, which cause premature aging and skin cancer. So, yes, darker skinned people do need sun protection, too. Even if they don't burn easily. I'm Kelly Lin, and that's your medical minute. Okay. Thank you, Kelly. Good point. Well taken. 60 now, sunny, a high of 88 today. This is the script for Charm City Confidential. Good morning, Bill. Jane, that's certainly putting it mildly. Good morning. This vacation was originally overshadowed by the president's problems in the Monica Lewinsky matter And the fact that he had had to go on to television appeared before the grand jury first and go on television Monday night and basically say that he had lied six months earlier. We then didn't see him for a couple of days. And then all of a sudden, with no warning, one of the best kept secrets of this or any other administration, the airstrike on the terrorist bases in Afghanistan and the Sudan, that we think, Jane, that when the president returns here this afternoon, he will finally resume his vacation in earnest. For one thing, it's too nice a day here not to play golf. But you never know because the president handlers had initially pushed him to get out and do some public events, interrupt his vacation because they wanted him to be seen as getting back to business, dealing with his agenda before he leaves the White House today, he'll sit down with his advisers. And I think that's one of the things that they will be deciding whether to interrupt the vacation in the next couple of weeks to do some domestic events to show that he is not consumed with the Monica Lewinsky matter. And although it's August, the Lewinsky grand jury is not taking a holiday either. The grand jury continues. Monica Lewinsky appeared for a final time yesterday. This morning in Kenya, many people are responding to the military action taken by the United States against those thought to be responsible for the U.S. embassy bombings in Nairobi and Tanzania. Vicky Maybury has that story. At the bomb site in Nairobi, where the search for evidence and the clean up seems never ending. There is no sense this morning that revenge is right, only that it may be necessary. I fear it's good because that's where these bombs are going. So it's better if you do destroy the whole thing as strong as it is. You can be justified. And as long as they have real proof that they were hitting the right targets associated with this bombing here, I think it is morally justified. Yet others feel compassion for any innocent victims who may have been hurt in Afghanistan and Sudan because this one here destroyed the lives of people and property. At the same time, the same act could have done the same in the other place. And there is concern that there will be more sites like this. More scenes like these replayed around the world. I think the guys are now going to hit back a few people. They'll definitely do that. I'm very sure. But the countries that were targets, Afghanistan and the Sudan, are not at all happy with the attacks and are threatening retaliation. Drew Levinson is standing by live in Washington to brief us on increased security here and what's going on over there. Drew, good afternoon to you. While America's allies are applauding yesterday's missile attacks, its foes are condemning them. And the United States is bracing for any sort of retaliation. The U.S. missile strikes destroyed at least two guerrilla training camps in eastern Afghanistan and a suspected chemical weapons plant in Sudan. Both targets are linked to Osama bin Laden. He's the Saudi millionaire allegedly connected to the deadly bombings earlier this month of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. This morning, Sudan's ambassador to the U.N. insisted the building the United States bombed was a pharmaceutical company. So bombing this plant shows me the real blow off of a lack of intelligence because it goes there. And I think we will need to have good intelligence and be serious about that and track them so that they avoid such things. Pakistan says one of the U.S. missiles aimed at neighboring Afghanistan landed on its soil, killing at least five people. It just doesn't get any better than that. Today's slightly more humid, slightly warmer, but still nothing that's going to ruin you or any any plans you have outside. Let's go ahead. Daylight sky live right now. We've got. There you go. It will be interesting to take the pictures in the last couple of days. You'd see a little increase in haze. But again, we're not really going to feel summer like August like. And so again, into tomorrow and then on into the weekend. Here's the big national radar summary. Right now, let's identify a few things we're looking at. The weather's going to start getting very interesting here over the next like 4 or 5 days. First off, we still have high pressure sitting off the coast and it is running our weather right now. Don't worry about that. It's just a it's an anomaly that showed up on this big radar scan. Here's the high. We've got low pressure out to the west that wants to run a cold front through the area. Front snap, really going to make it early next week. We've got another blast of cool air that wants to calm down a cool front, if you will.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136476/file/253061#t=4432.75,4516.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136476/file/253061/transcript/71194/annotation/44","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It may make it it may not make it. Again, here's this area of high pressure running our show plot the high right offshore. And again here's this front which is never really going to make it here. It's going to stall out to our north and west. But some thunderstorms will form along the stall line. And because of that post, about a 50, 60% chance of an afternoon thunderstorm tomorrow, it will lose its identity Sunday. Take that chance for thunderstorm down to maybe 20 or 25%. And then we get into Monday and it's all it being our weather. It's all going to depend upon what now Tropical Storm Bonnie does. This is Bonnie. She is right now about 75 miles east northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. And all three of the computer models we use to forecast our weather. We being AccuWeather, take this up into the Atlantic now where it goes tough call that high offshore could help to run it all and out to sea. Now, Baltimore is number one late newscast. This is w jay z's eyewitness. There is breaking news tonight. A car accident in Fullerton leaves one person dead and many others injured and the night sky. Jackson joins us now live with the very latest. Scott. Vic, this is an absolutely horrible accident. We're on Roscoe Boulevard, just west of 695. Let me let you take a look down the road. Baltimore County police and fire crews are still on the scene trying to sort out what happened in this horrible accident. This is what we know. The car that crossed the double yellow line came to rest on its roof, about 100 to 250ft away after the two collided and caught fire. The driver of the Pontiac Bonneville, we understand, was medevac to shock trauma. Three other people inside the Pontiac Bonneville were also taken to area hospitals. There was yet one other car involved. Car number three, which is a Toyota Corolla. Several people in that vehicle were injured. Minor Lee and were treated and released here at the scene. Here is what Baltimore County police had to say about the accident. They all know if a vehicle was westbound Roscoe Boulevard. At the time, it appeared to cross the centerline, striking a Pontiac carnival traveling westbound after striking the Pontiac Bonneville Escort vehicle continued westbound, coming to rest approximately 150 to 200ft down the road on its roof. After coming to rest, the vehicle did catch fire. And it was Baltimore County Fire Department crews. We were actually in Rosedale. Baltimore County Fire Department crews which put out the fire of that vehicle. Again, we don't know what kind of vehicle it is because it was burned so badly. But police are trying to make that determination. There is debris scattered absolutely everywhere on both sides of Roswell Boulevard in the trees, in the woods over here and on the ground. And a number of residents were out here. They said they just heard a horrible crash, came out to see what it was and immediately call rescue crews. Police say the little boy who just turned three years old yesterday wandered away from his family home on Barrow Road late this afternoon. And as soon as his face showed up on Eyewitness News at five, the phone started ringing at the police station. Yes, I am. This frantic woman has just seen her three year old nephew on the news. Police asking the media for help to identify the wandering toddler. He received a call at 333 this afternoon on Barrow Road in Lansdown for a found child and got there we found this little feller. Couple of young neighborhood kids were playing in our yard and he showed up and started playing. They didn't know who he was, and they went to a couple of neighborhoods and three other neighbors, and nobody recognized them. So they gave us a call. It's an emotional reunion. Okay. Are you okay? Doesn't look like very much, but they are kind of moving south eastward. So there's still a slight chance, a slight chance that some of these may may move into Maryland between, let's say, two and five in the morning. It's possible, especially north and west of Baltimore, that you might still still see a shower overnight tonight. It is definitely a distinct possibility. Our national radio show, a couple of interesting things, a lot of shower activity. Tropical wave over Florida and Tropical Storm Charlie right here southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas, is going to be moving onshore later tomorrow. It probably will not be a hurricane, but it will be. It retains a tropical storm characteristic, 50, maybe 60 mile an hour wind gusts there with 48in of rain in Texas. They're loving the rain here. Probably caused some flooding, but it's been so dry down there, they'll take any kind of rain they can get. Of course, it's breaking the heat down there as well for us, which front to our north gets kind of close tomorrow. So there will be a risk of a shower of thunder shower tomorrow afternoon or evening looks like, as well. Now, take a look at these displays. We have Tropical Storm Charlie here. This wave over Florida with a lot of rain there. And way off to the east of your screen here. That's the fringe clouds of almost, almost Hurricane Bonnie almost coming real close.
