You know, he would have been, you know, living for the future. Terry Ambrose was working behind the bar at about 1135 last night, when witnesses tell me a man and a woman walked inside demanding money. She opened the cash drawer, ended up getting shot in the neck. The two suspects fled the area. Unfortunately, the victim died sometimes sometime later at shock trauma. Did they get any money at all? No. According to the information that I received from detectives that the robbers did not get any money today, the affection the neighborhood feels for Ambrose poured out onto the steps of the Rainbow Bar. All the family and friends here, by the way, are going to have a candlelight vigil tonight at 9:00. I don't know if you can notice, but the wind has really picked up, and they say they're going to do the very best they can to keep those candles lit and honor her. Katie, do police have any leads at all? Well, luckily there is just a surveillance tape that was installed in the bar and they are going over that. They say there is something on the tape, so hopefully it'll just be a matter of time before they're able to catch their suspects. All right, Katie, more at six and later at six. That rule is sparking controversy around Olympic snowboarding tonight, but at least it means a medal for Canadian. Ray Leary won gold, then lost it for marijuana use. And as Alex Demetric reports tonight, he's given back his gold medal. It was Canadian Ross Elliott's skill with a snowboard that won him and his sport's first Olympic gold medal. But then drug testing found traces of marijuana and rebellion. There's controversy in Carroll County tonight over new outfits for detention center inmates, striped jumpsuits with a red letter P on the back. In his commentary tonight, Michael Telesco says they're the work of a no nonsense sheriff. Oh, yeah. This is a sheriff who, doesn't fool around. No question. Carroll County inmates wishing to make a fashion statement declare they don't like their new outfits, which have old fashioned horizontal stripes in the letter P for prisoner on the back. Who can blame them? Everyone knows horizontal stripes are never figure flattering. What bothers the inmates even more, though, is the sense that the traditional prison garb tends to stigmatize them. Apparently it hasn't dawned on them they're supposed to be stigmatized. They're supposed to feel shame for the acts that got them arrested. When County Sheriff John Brown brought in the new uniforms last month, he said, tell them it's a jail, not a hotel. Where the inmates have a point, though is going to court. There are studies showing those who wear prison outfits to trial are perceived as inherently guilty by juries. There is no reason why civilian outfits can't be worn to court. But the argument that the outfits humiliate inmates doesn't carry a lot of weight. They're not behind bars so they can feel good about themselves. I'm Michael Lesser. Thank you. The medal yanked the next day after drug testing found marijuana. And this morning, the medal returned. You'll be happy to know that Ross has been informed of the decision, and when he was, he took the medal out of his pocket and put it on. Seems the Olympic rules do not consider marijuana a performance enhancing drug. That technicality gave Elliott back his gold, though not its luster. We're trying to get away from that image of smoking and wearing the baggy clothes, and he should have been smarter and it was a bad choice. And for those following the sport in Baltimore, I thought, most athletes are not supposed to be doing drugs, for one thing. And, to show that these young kids what it's all about. He shouldn't have been doing it. Well, it's his right. He's a radical. A lot of snowboarders and snowboarders are radicals. You know, the way they dress. Attitude. It's good. You know, most of mine are good. A free and easy lifestyle that's still trying to fit the stiff rules and rituals of the Olympics. Alex Demetric, WJZ, Eyewitness News. More on that in all the day's Olympics news, here's Jon. Fact of the matter is they have not been that well represented. The snowboarders and this is the first year, right? Right. First year. And the guy, the Austrian guy, I mean, they went while they threw stuff out the window. They, they, damaged the $4,000 hotel switchboard. But it is a spectacular sport to watch if you if you've seen any other great athletes. I mean, I love the X-Games and this is like the X-Games comes to Nagano because it is just acrobatic. At any rate, it is time now to check in with the latest goings on in Nagano. But before we get into today's Olympic update, we must issue the following caution. Today's Olympic results are about to be given. This is your final warning. Honey, I think it's the feds outside. Well, that's right, we're about to go over some events which will be featured on CBS tonight. So if you do not want to know how things turn out, if you want to play along with the plausibly live suspense, well, go plant a few plants. I don't know, find something to do because here they come. The Big Shoe is live in Nagano now and tells us that the paying customers have absolutely loved this new Olympic event. What you got, Mike? Hey, they really do. You know, here there's an Koji Temple. I think the way to describe this is sort of peace and harmony and beauty. I think the only thing that, what we see here is in Koji would be beauty, because it certainly is. Stephanie, it depends on how long you stay in the sun and when in the middle of the summer. Excuse me? When the sun is high overhead, the ultraviolet rays are the strongest, so you're most likely to get sunburn. Summer is also the time of the year where we spend most of our time outside. But even on a sunny winter day like today, you can't get sunburn. That's why doctors say you should always wear sunscreen all year round to protect your skin from the very, very damaging rays of the sun. We've had a very, very, precipitous rise in skin cancers over the last 10 to 15 years because people 15, 20 years ago didn't notice. Yeah. Healthwatch reporter Kelly Allen says doctors can repair a herniated disc one day and the patient up and about the next. It's incredible. It is. What they're doing is they're using a smaller incision and that appears to help patients heal faster. In tonight's Healthwatch, pain, numbness and tingling down the leg are some of the primary symptoms of a herniated or ruptured disc. Surgery is often the only way to correct the problem, which once meant several days in the hospital. Not anymore. Though. A smaller incision has turned this operation into an outpatient procedure. Count to five. Relax. 67 year old Jerry Saban had back surgery about a year ago. A herniated disc left him in constant pain. It was pressing on the nerves and went down into my left ankle. It got so that I couldn't sleep at night. So we went to orthopedic surgeon doctor Mark Rosenthal for help. These are the bones. And these are the discs, the yellow things or the nerves that are coming down. You can see looking in this direction, that the disc right here is directly in front of the nerve, and there's bone here directly behind the nerve.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136447/file/253038#t=5623.12,5733.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136447/file/253038/transcript/71290/annotation/56","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So if this disc herniated like this, it's going to crush that nerve up against the bone. Herniated discs often caused by improper lifting. But smoking cigarets working around heavy vibration like construction and genetics can also increase your risk. Doctor Rosenthal removed Jerry's protruding disc with a procedure called a disc ectomy. Doctors have reduced the incision size to increase healing. We've developed techniques for making the decision about this long. We can move a minimal amount of muscle off the bone, not even remove the bone. Any bone, in most cases. Move the nerves over. Get that disc out. When we. So things back up, person has a very small incision. They have much less pain. There's much less to have to heal. And that way they can get up and get moving faster and they recover a lot quicker. And Doctor Rosenthal says keeping patients active after the surgery also helps them recover. We're hearing more and more about these types of surgeries when people are up and up and up real quickly. In what way is this helpful? Well, instead of keeping them in bed, which would cause some joint stiffness and weakness, they keep them moving and that just helps them recover quicker. American champion Todd Eldridge is currently in third place, in excellent position for a run at the gold medal where the long program is skated on Saturday. Meanwhile, the United States women's hockey team is now just one step away from a gold medal. They crushed Japan ten to nothing to advance to Tuesday's championship game against Team Canada. In snowboarding, the U.S. picked up two medals. Ross Power is taking the bronze medal in the men's half pipe, while in the women's half pipe, Shannon Dunn took home a bronze. That's something that Shannon never, ever even dreamed of when she first picked up this sport. Never. When I started snowboarding did I think that it would become an Olympic sport. So to metal was a really great thing. And finally to the speed skating oval where America's best hope for a medal. Casey Botella finished fifth in the men's 1500 meter race. Norway's UN Sandra won the gold medal there. That was the third gold for Norway in these games, as they now move into second place in the medal race behind Germany, which leads all nations with four gold and 12 medals overall. He selected Tidal Wave Software arrived. I loaded it up, I believe I called the operator and said, here's the number that was given to me. Can you tell me it's a long distance call from here?
