Here, on Everyday Heroes, we'll meet three special Marylanders who win the fight against disability each day. Hello, I'm Al Santers, and these are our Everyday Heroes. Stephen Greer, a blind teenager who, at the age of 16, left home to search for personal independence. at Marion School. A young professional who has found time in her busy schedule to compete for and win the opportunity to represent all handicapped people as Miss Wheelchair America. And finally, we'll meet Viennese-born Fred Freep, who has overcome deafness to live the American dream with his wife and three kids in suburban Baltimore. Adolescence is a time for testing limits. I'm 19 years old. Ever since I was young, I've been pretty eager to do things on my own. I guess the age of 16 was time enough, if anything, so I moved out. At first, when I first moved out, I really didn't have any money. I had just applied for SSI, which is a benefit for handicapped people. And, um... It took them a while to send it, so I kind of had to live on credit in places. And for the first two years, I was written rooms. Sometimes, you know, in the rooms that I was in, the landlord didn't quite want to let me be independent as far as cooking in the kitchen sometimes and whatnot, you know, because they didn't know that much about a blind person. And they wasn't sure if they'd come home one day and the blind person burned the house down. I had a chance of returning home a month or so ago. And I told my mother that things had just gotten too independent. I feel that it's too much to leave behind. I cook my own meals. I pay my own bills. And that's the way I love it. I love the privacy, I love to be independent, and as you can see it's a beautiful apartment.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596#t=121.14,213.89
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596/transcript/77553/annotation/3
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596#t=217.48,219.48
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596/transcript/77553/annotation/4
Speaker 2: This is my second year in the same program, which they teach out at school. Last year, they was teaching me also how to handle customers and how to serve them, how to wait on customers. And this year is teaching me how to manage the whole business. Hopefully, next year, they will give me one, you know, somewhere in the downtown area or somewhere in the Baltimore area. What do we mean by operating expenses, Dave? Operating expenses, wait a minute. Let me look up the equation. Thanks for watching! If the operating expenses are greater than the gross profit... I've been at the Mellon School for the blind for 11 years. I'm taking English business math, which associates with the STAND program, and typing. I kind of always did know what I wanted to do when I get out of school. When I was in the eighth grade, I started opening law books. I really want to pursue further into the staying program. But I also want to go to college because I want to be a lawyer. If there had to be a choice, it would be to go to college. When I get out of school, I'm still going to continue playing sports like I did in school. And I don't think that there'd be any problem playing them because I will play their game. Now, keep on swinging, man, until I get that ball. Some blind people are locked up in home with their parents because they're overprotective. Now me, I get out and potty with my brothers. We went to concerts. We went to baseball games, football games. We potty. Sometimes we just go outside and shoot the breeze out on the curb. When I come home from school, I check out the scene, see how everything's been. Mostly, I socialize with women more than, you know, just the regular corner guys, you know, because I'm woman-crazy, really. Blind people are just as normal as sighted people, you know, because everyone has a handicapped somewhere in them. Sometimes I go to a supermarket that's pretty big. I'll sometimes take a person with me. I learned the hard way about how to handle your money and not to let anyone else rip you off. And how to survive. You know, I slept in large rooms and stuff like that before. You know, I lost a great deal of weight in the last three years, but I'm pretty sure they'll never happen again.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596#t=222.49,421.18
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596/transcript/77553/annotation/5
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596#t=422.19,422.73
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596/transcript/77553/annotation/6
Speaker 2: taught me how to be even more independent and how to handle the real difficult emotional problems that occur. because I did have a lot of emotional problems in the last three years, which interfered with my schoolwork and whatnot. And I found that people have been very amenable to helping me or carrying me if necessary or bouncing me down a flight of stairs or whatever's necessary to make it so that I can do my job. So I've been very fortunate in that respect. Hi, this is Marianne Schooley. Can I help you? I've got my share of paperwork and I have to be in the office to be able to respond to people and to get all my work done. So I spend a fair part of the day in the office. Hi, have a seat. We'll be right with you, okay? And I also take blood pressures. I actually take blood pressures and do counseling, talk to people about sodium cutting back on the salt that they're eating and keeping their blood pressure under control. You're supposed to have your blood pressure taken yearly. I'm also working in coordination, trying to make sure that there's not a lot of duplicative services in the city for high blood pressure, so that we're trying to key people into a high blood pressure area, or a neighborhood area, rather than having them go across town to get their blood pressures taken. I think my favorite part is during the patient education and patient counseling when I'm working in the clinics and I'm working on a one-to-one basis. I think because I get positive feedback, I enjoy that the most. No, I'm not from Baltimore originally. I'm from Los Angeles. I've been here about two years now. I moved here to experience a lot of different things about the East Coast, one of them being the weather, traditionalism, things like that. Part of it was to get away from my family as well. My family's been very supportive of me the last seven years since my accident. But they also tend to be a little protective. And I needed to be able to show them that I could do it. And they needed to be able to feel that I could do it on my own. I really debated whether I wanted to get into the Maryland pageant. I had some friends that said, go ahead, it'd be a real good experience for you. And I did, and to my surprise I won. I went on to the America pageant and won that too. My friends have been a little overwhelmed, I think, with the publicity and things like that, just as I have, but they've been very supportive and they've helped me through some really difficult times when my schedules have gotten more hectic.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596#t=587.28,730.59
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596/transcript/77553/annotation/11
Speaker 5: It's not because I'm disabled, because I'm a person. In Vienna, Austria, on January 1st, 1947, Fred Friedman was born to Martin and Gisela Friedman. In March of 1949, Martin and Gisela, who had been imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps, took Fred from Austria to America, where they could escape further persecution. They settled in Lakewood, New Jersey, where Martin found a job as a baker, Gisela found work as a masseuse, and Fred attended the New Jersey School for the Deaf. After graduating high school, Fred began attending Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. It was the only liberal arts college for the deaf in the world which lured Fred into the Baltimore-Washington area. Now, Fred's routine includes a daily commute from Baltimore to Washington. Fred was working part-time as a file clerk at the Library of Congress while attending Gallaudet. The job became full-time after graduation. Fifteen years later, Fred, now a card catalog editor, admits that he works at the library not because he loves books, which he does, but to support his growing family. Fred met Connie in 1967, and they were married four years later. They are both deaf, Fred totally, and Connie partially, but they're children. Judy, age 5, Miriam, age 3, and Aerie, age 1, are all hearing. Fred's faith plays a large role in his life, and he and his family attend Orthodox Jewish services each week. Fred and Connie agree that religious training is important for the kids because it will help them to develop moral values and a sense of who they are. In his free time, Fred likes to read and collect stamps and coins, but his main hobby right now is working on his house and yard. This pursuit has special rewards for Fred, because not only can he accomplish something, but he can pursue his favorite pastime, spending time with Connie and the kids as well. Things haven't always been easy for the Freedmans, but they are better than they were ten years ago. Connie tells us about some of the things which have made their lives full of-
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596#t=1289.57,1558.62
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144765/file/267596/transcript/77553/annotation/54
Speaker 7: When the baby wakes up, he will cry, and this mic will make the lights go on and off. This makes it easier for she and Fred to get proper medical care, go out to dinner, and even buy nails at the local hardware store. Life wasn't easy for Fred's parents, but he and his family enjoy more freedom than they did. Being hearing will make things easier for Judy, Miriam, and Ari than they were for their parents. For Fred and Connie and other deaf people, their lives can be made better. Not so much with our help and sympathy, but with our understanding that they are thinking, feeling individuals like everybody else. Our three heroes have shown us that people with disabilities are like everyone else. Steve is a typical teenager who has a part-time job, likes to play sports and is, as he says, woman crazy. He's also struggling to make it on his own and gain independence. Marion is independent of her family and is exploring what kind of life she'll lead as a young adult. The Freedmans have established the kind of home and lifestyle they like. They're comfortable in their community. and hope, like all parents, that things will be even better for their kids. All three of our featured guests continually exhibit strength in the face of adversity, as do hundreds of other disabled people here in Maryland. For Steve, Marion, and the Freedmans, and all the other everyday heroes throughout Maryland, I'm Al Santers.
