We'll have the very latest on Clinton's crisis. Plus, thousands, possibly millions of computer users are causing a traffic jam on the Internet as they log in to read the report. Jaycee's Eyewitness News is next. You're watching w Jay Z DVD. This is Eyewitness News. And hi everybody. Good morning. I'm Katie Long. And I'm Tim Williams on your Saturday September the 12th. Good morning. It's a nice day outside. Nice weekend. We're winding down, of course, the official days of summer. As you know, September 21st starts to get closer and closer. Take a look at Sky in downtown Baltimore. Of course, a little quiet this week compared to last week. Last week it was all the rain, so to speak, as the opening day came and went on a somewhat down note. But this is a new weekend, a new weekend, and everyone's out having a good time. Basically, though, the Orioles are in town closing out their last homestand. So we'll still have some activity down there. This is 988ft above ground level courtesy of the Candelabra camera. And downtown is looking a little quaint, as you might expect on the weekend, but it is a very nice day. Not as hazy as it usually is this time of morning on a Saturday. Take a look at first warning radar. Some of us saw some showers move on through the area last night. Didn't do any real damage. Were a little gusty at times. Some of the showers were a little strong. No real thunderstorms reported, but you do see some of that still moving on by Eastern down around Dover.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054#t=2.2,94.07"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054/transcript/71181/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Most of that will be gone by mid-morning, will be burning off. And there's a very, very, very slight chance of those same types of showers moving through a little later this evening, mostly late after sundown. We'll tell you about that in just a little while. But take a look at the forecast today. Very, very nice. 67 degrees is our report of temperature. Downtown Baltimore, as you see, 66 here on TV Hill at 801. Our high expected today will be between 90, 91 degrees. And then tonight, as we said, under mostly clear skies. We do expect a possibility of showers again moving through. Temperatures right around 66 with the air quality good today. Very, very nice. So if you have any problems breathing, you shouldn't have any problems today. And of course, I'll be back in just about 11 minutes with a complete first warning for you. All right. But first, let's take a look at this hour's top story, the next chapter in the presidential sex scandals being written this morning. Special prosecutor Kenneth Starr gave the version compiled by his office on the affair. Spelling it out in time in graphic sexual detail. This 445 page report is filled with dozens of allegations that Starr says are impeachable offenses. But today, the president's attorneys are preparing a rebuttal. Jonathan Freed begins our team coverage now as President Clinton attended an Irish American peace rally. It was clear the White House was getting ready for a political war. The objective saving the president from impeachment. While Mr. Clinton was all smiles, his lawyers were sending a different message that he is a political target. The salacious allegations in this referral are simply intended to humiliate, embarrass and politically damage the president. In short, this is personal and not impeachable.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054#t=94.97,194.27"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054/transcript/71181/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It was a defining day for the Clinton presidency, as the House of Representatives voted to release details of the independent counsel's report into the Monica Lewinsky affair. Kenneth Starr claims the evidence may constitute grounds for impeachment and that Mr. Clinton pursued a strategy of deceiving the American people and Congress. The report also contains sexually explicit details of the Lewinsky affair. Details Some in Congress are already vowing not to focus on not only the report here, but I've got this rebuttal. The news reporter spends quite a significant amount of time again bashing Starr. When are they going to learn that they have to stand up and be accountable for the things that the president has done? Earlier, the president was apologizing again for his actions and an emotional White House prayer breakfast. He went as far as admitting sin, sorrow and promised repentance. It is important to me that everybody who has been hurt. Know that the sorrow I feel is genuine. First and most important, my family. Also my friends, my staff, my cabinet. Monica Lewinsky and her family. And the American people. It's expected to take several months before the House Judiciary Committee makes a move regarding holding impeachment hearings. Jonathan Freed, CBS News, Capitol Hill. Thanks, Jonathan. You know, the fact of the matter is, no matter where you go or what you do today, the Star Report is proving to be the topic of conversation. Copies of the report are in such demand, in fact, that the Government Printing Office has announced this morning that it's going to sell copies of the report for $14 each. They're going to make some money that that'll help the national budget. Despite the nature of the report so far, the latest polls showing Americans are standing behind the president.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054#t=195.59,306.37"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054/transcript/71181/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"62% of those asked. In a CNN Gallup poll say the president is still doing a good job. And like most of the nation, Marylanders have definite opinions about the report and whether or not the president should be impeached or resign. Kai Jackson continues our team coverage with reaction from Washington. It was on the Internet that this is the presidency and the radio. I think people think a little bit differently about the president than about a U.S. senator and a mayor and congressman. Yeah. Even outside the Capitol, people were buzzing about what was on the inside the Ken Starr report and the fact that America was now reading it word for word. And I'm not sure I'm that interested in knowing all the graphics, what's in it. I think, as I said earlier, it's a sign of the times, a sign of the times. All right. The graphic details of the relationship between the president and Monica Lewinsky available with the click of a computer mouse. And it's a mess. It's damaged the presidency. Forget the partizanship. Forget the ideology. It's damaged the presidency. It's damaged America's standing in the world, no doubt about it. But there are dozens of theories about what happens next. Many believe the court of public opinion will be just as important as Congress in determining the president's future. The public, to an extent, is like a jury. And so this is like presenting a prosecutor, presenting the case to a jury and then the jury going out to deliberate. So what comes next? Well, WJC is legal eagle. Dick Elfman was with Kai Jackson in Washington last night, and he has this perspective. You know, you have to take into account that there is going to be the fact that the prosecutor is not supposed to put forth a defense for the president. It is a one sided agreement. That is precisely what it's supposed to be. It is up to the president's party, to or the president's people to go ahead and put his defense forward. So you must keep that in mind when you're looking at this. This is one sided. It is only from their point of view. Cross-examination will happen much later down the line if and when people come into the Congress to testify. Well, while much of the nation waits to see what happens next, people are pondering what they've seen so far. Here's reaction from around the country, including people and politicians right here in Maryland. This is simply an investigators report at this point in time. And I think there was an argument not to disclose it because it may hurt innocent people that may say things that have no basis in fact. But once in the public domain are hard to refute. You know, I've been lied to. Well, debate is not only focusing on the president, but on whether the star report is justified or is just an invasion of privacy. Yes or no matter what you think. As we've been saying, the full report is on the Internet now, since it was downloaded on the Internet, the report has become the most read document online. Computer experts say yesterday was the busiest day ever on the Internet. One website with a star report had 400,000 hits a minute. That's a minute. While another had 20 times its normal users. Now, you can read the Star Report in its entirety simply by logging on to our website at z WW dot dot com. And no doubt the story is making front page headlines in newspapers around the world in Sydney, Australia. The Morning Herald cites concerns over how the Star Report will affect world markets. Two newspapers, one in London and one in Thailand, are demanding Clinton's resignation. And check out the front page here in The Baltimore Sun, it reads. Extensive Star Report Details Clinton's liaisons. And while the sun is not printing the report in its entirety, there is a special section with portions of that document. Okay. All right. Well, no matter how you feel about Stars report, it's really hitting a nerve with the American public in general. Psychologist Dr. Jim McGee joins us now with that part of the story. Thanks for joining us this morning. Good morning, Kate. Okay. Sudan bombed a refugee camp yesterday. Somebody hijacked a nuclear submarine and there was a shooting spree in Colorado. However, all of our attention is focused on this real story. Exactly. Why are we so fascinated with this? Well, over 2000 years ago, the Greeks discovered tragedy and a particular type of tragedy was fascinating to people, namely the fall and falling of a hero, the falling of a an important person, particularly if the fall was the result of their own doing.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054#t=500.95,609.82"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054/transcript/71181/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"That's an irresistible story. People have been fascinated by things like that for thousands of years, and it seems like this is the first time in really a long time that there has been a real debate that Americans can sit down and really talk about. That is brand new. Absolutely. Victimization, opportunism. Is this healthy? Well, it's not happy. I don't know about healthy, but this is certainly a terrible thing for the whole country to go through. There are no winners in anything like this, with perhaps one exception, as we saw in Watergate. The one thing that was demonstrated was the Constitution really does work when the chips are down. And I'm confident that that's what's going to come out of this as well. Okay. My mom always told me that there are two things you don't talk about in public sex and politics. And yet I don't know anymore. Exactly. Obviously, what everyone's talking about that this morning. That's right. Should you keep your opinions to yourself, like my mom always said, or is it okay to talk about it in these times? I suspect even your mom is talking about this one. I think people are just going to discuss this and in fact, beat it to death. It's an irresistible topic. People will talk about it. But I'm reminded of the story of the little boy who asked his father about sex. And his father went on and talked to him for about two hours. And at the end of the conversation, a little boy said, no, I meant six. Three and three equals six. So I know this is going to be something that people won't be able to walk away from. Now, I'm kind of reminded of the O.J. Simpson saga. Is it going to really affect the American public listening to all of this information or are we just going to shut down? No, I think we will be obsessed with this. I'm an old geezer and I remember Watergate quite well. And things sort of came to a halt during Watergate. Life went on to an extent, but the clear preoccupation was with the Watergate incident. And this time it's going to be with the Clinton investigation. I have to ask you, how do you explain this to your kids? My son is six and he's what is going on? I mean, how do you explain cigars and all this other stuff that obviously a six year old cannot listen to or here? Well, with a six year old, I wouldn't explain it to try to get him to watch Teletubbies or something else. It's one of those situations where kids take their cues from the adults. The younger ones probably aren't really going to pay all that much attention to it. The teenagers don't listen to us anyway. They'll talk among themselves about it, but use some good judgment, use some discretion, and primarily be a role model. You know, one of the things that gets talked to death is how we should use this to teach children about honesty and morality. Actually, you teach them that on a day to day basis. You don't wait till there's a presidential crisis to that. And the main lesson sometimes, unfortunately, is don't trust politicians. That's what comes out of something like this. Plant lovers know they can come here and get some neat plants for some great buys. And here we are visiting a Stand by Koehler Nursery, and they have one of the most interesting plants here, I think are these natural fly catchers. Now, what's the real term for that stand? These are pitcher plants and these hail from the southeastern United States. And what they will do is the insect will fly towards the front of it here. And the they're attracted by the Red Venetian. There's a very waxy layer here that will cause the insect to lose its footing and slide down inside the pitcher. Looks like one escape there. Yeah, one did escape. One made its way through there. But normally what'll happen is downward pointing here is will prevent the insect from getting out and it will be digested by enzymes produced down inside the pitcher. That is really neat. Thanks, Stan. Now, I want to show you some other things they have here. Katie, this is just a fascinating place where you can find everything from and enemies to Zan to dishes I learned about today. And I know this one kind of holds a little place for me. It's called Liberty Heights corridor I grew up in and several other people in this newsroom did. And it's changed certainly has changed over the years. Right. It's the neighborhood Barry grew up in and the Forest Park area. My parents are from the Forest Park area. So it's it's got a lot of history for all of us locally. Great. Well, tell us about what someone needs to do if they want to come down and tell us where it is and what time. And then if they get selected, what will they do today? It's really very simple because of the number of people that we'd like to see and have just be able to register, We're just going to take a chance to meet people, give them a little bit of information and get their photographs and phone numbers. Beyond that, as we go through the scenes, we'll go through those pictures. People arrive to the scene, we'll call them, have them come in for costume fittings. I haven't come down to the set. Millions of people around the world are expected to spend part of this weekend reading the independent counsel, Ken Starr's report about President Clinton's sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky. Starr's 445 page report released yesterday, citing what he says are 11 grounds for impeachment proceedings. Our team coverage continues with CNN's John King, who says Mr. Clinton's attorneys see things differently. Defense against impeachment is a mix of public contrition and hardball politics. I will instruct my lawyers to mount a vigorous defense using all available appropriate arguments. Those arguments are aimed not only at members of Congress, but also at the American people. If they don't support impeachment, the White House is betting the House won't either. The salacious allegations in this referral are simply intended to humiliate, embarrass and politically damage the president. In short, this is personal and not impeachable. The president's lawyers attacked Ken Starr for including graphic sexual details in his report to Congress and released a 73 page rebuttal of the independent counsel's case. But White House and Democratic congressional sources conceded to CNN those details underscore a problem for the president. The answers that you reference were in the context of the Paula Jones lawsuit, a highly charged lawsuit by political enemies meant to do nothing but entrap the president. The White House legal team says Starr has no evidence to support charges of obstructing justice, witness tampering and abuse of power. There are a lot of lurid allegations in the prosecutors referral, but there is no credible evidence of impeachable offenses. On Capitol Hill, nervous Democrats are poring through this Starr report and the thousands of pages of supporting documents to determine whether or not to believe the president and his lawyers. In the meantime, Mr. Clinton strategy includes a determined effort to show public contrition. Hoping the American people will believe public humiliation is punishment enough? I ask that God, give me a clean heart. Let me walk by faith and not cite. The vice president and first lady provided public political support on a day that stunned and shocked the Capitol. As did Irish-Americans on hand for a White House celebration that belied the day's crisis atmosphere. Hillary and I'll never forget what you've done for us today, and I suspect you now. Attorneys reviewing the Star report for congressional Democrats are impressed with its thoroughness and detailed documentation. They say the challenge now is for the Clinton legal team to deliver an equally impressive response. John King, CNN, the White House. And now it's up to Congress to decide if any action against the president will be taken. Well, of course, the star report is the buzz of the nation's capital and the rest of the world. And Dr. Robert Atkins has written a new book, Vital Nutrient Solution, and he's speaking today at the Natural Products Expo at the Convention Center. And he decided to come in and join us this morning. Thanks. Thanks for joining us. I know you don't remember this, but my dad was one of your original patients in 1972, I think. Yeah, he was taking vitamins all the way back then. And he's gone a long way. And so have you. You have your own line of vitamins now? I do indeed. But you were one of the originals, one of the original backers that vitamins and natural holistic solutions to feeling better juicers and all that. So I had to grow up with that. Boy. Goes back 25 years. Are you surprised by how much people are into it now? Not at all. It's just overdue. They should have been thinking about it a long time ago. Over 100,000 people die in a hospital just from these drug combinations that are prescribed the way that doctors prescribe them. And that's just in the hospital. So there has to be a half a million deaths every year from taking drugs now in our practice. We cut that down by 90% because we found that nature substances the things that work by nourishing us. That's why they're called vital nutrients. They're not just the vitamins and not just the minerals, but a whole roster of bio chemicals that our bodies put out to help us stay well. But they can be used to get well is as well. Now, give us some examples. First of all, tell us how many vitamins do you take every morning when you get home in the morning? I'll take about 20. And by the time the day is over, I will have taken 40, 40 vitamins. Well, the pills, though, a lot of them are combinations. Most of them are. Now, does it ever give you a stomach ache? I mean, I take one vitamin and I feel sick. I know, I. No, but you could. I mean, there are some people that can't take that many, and we have to come up with a strategy for them to crush the vitamins, take them in the middle of the meal, and make sure you don't ever eat something without taking a vitamin to get at least some of your requirements in. And there will be some people who will not be able to take the ideal amount because their stomach will not admit it. But the average person can do it. Most people wouldn't think of driving through stuff like that. But then that's the beauty of Subaru all wheel drive. It automatically transfers power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip. Which means it does the thinking for you. Sorry, mate. Guess I wasn't thinking. It got very warm today. Yeah, indeed. I mentioned in one of our little sneak before that we did set a record today and in the neighborhood, not in Baltimore, but down at Dulles Airport, they hit 95 degrees, eclipsed the old record of 94 down there. How hot did we get? 92. Looks like the number that I really I actually I haven't found the official high, so that's an unofficial number of 92 for the airport. So hot enough for normal? Yeah, normal would be 80 degrees. You know, we're getting into the cooler days of September. Not today, but not today. You're right. So let's take a look outside right now and check temperatures and on TV here. Well, let's take a look around the neighborhood first from the tower. Lots of things happening in town on this Saturday and Saturday night, and it still feels like summer is hanging on. And that's okay with most of us, I think. But temperature wise, here on TV, Hills 75 degrees is our thermometer reading right now. And what does indeed feel like a summary night? That's okay. I mean, it's a little bit warmer than normal, but autumn, chill. It'll be here soon enough, I'm sure. Down the ocean in the low 70s, 71, 71 at Salisbury and also Dover. And we are, of course, at 75, as I mentioned. Now, out of the bay tomorrow, you're looking for winds that are going to be fairly light.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054#t=4358.54,4464.69"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054/transcript/71181/annotation/44","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Northwest, once again, as they were today, five to maybe ten knots. I'm not even sure we're going to get to ten knots. I don't think the winds are going to be much at all on the bay Ways, one foot or less in the water temperature this evening at Thomas Point Light coming in at 75 degrees. Now take a look at the bigger satellite view and a couple of things to notice. This massive glass down here is the remnants of Frances. You heard about Frances and you've got rain particularly that it has been producing recently is really the big story with this tropical system. Over a foot of rain in places in New Orleans. Down in southern Louisiana, copious amounts of rain have been flooding areas down there. Really, wind isn't that much of a factor other than some tornadoes that have been spawned in this thing. So this is really the weather action center around the country right now. It doesn't look like it's going to impact our weather at all. So we're looking at it just as a national curiosity this week. Little frontal system drifting down out of the northern states and eastern Canada will be giving us a little bit lower temperature tomorrow than we saw today. So a bit of a moderation, but we're still going to be, we figure, a good seven, eight, nine degrees above normal for tomorrow. Being specific about those numbers, normal being 80 degrees. We're looking for 88 for our high temperature here in Baltimore, 86 at Dover and at Rock Hall on the other side of the bay. We're looking for 87 degrees for a high over there, 86 at the ocean and 89 at Salisbury. So for tonight, then. Hold on. We're got the whole neighborhood temperature.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054#t=4465.08,4553.62"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136470/file/253054/transcript/71181/annotation/45","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yes, I forgot about those 89 degrees downtown. Overnight, kind of a seasonal overnight low. Overnight low normally would be 60 degrees and we're within three degrees of that. And for Sunday, a lot of sunshine tomorrow with maybe a few clouds around. Not quite as warm, but still above normal tomorrow. Look for a high in the upper 80s and on the five day forecast, then things are pretty much stay above normal, actually all the way through the five day period until we get toward the end. Best chance for showers. Looks like Wednesday. We're a little behind on rain and we don't have any rain in the forecast until possibly Wednesday. So another summer day coming up for Sunday Pat.
