Electric power plants are only about 35 percent energy efficient, and that means that for every ton of coal burned here, 700 pounds is converted to electricity, 1 ,300 pounds completely wasted. That's where the hothouses come in. They take the power plant's waste heat and convert it to an indoor summer -like environment for year -round growth. There's a tremendous amount of heat that's going to waste. Agribusinesses is one good way to set up to utilize some of this type of waste heat. There are only about half a dozen such power plant gardens in the United States, but with more than 3 ,000 power plants across the country. The sky may be the limit for taking what would otherwise be wasted energy and turning it to food.
